Citizen is really nice Roy. I like it a lot.
Something a bit different for me, not exactly subtle but very cool.
(I like it anyway! :))
U-Boat "Darkmoon", limited colour run of 150.
Comes in Yellow orange and this blue.
Colour is Marmite, but I love it.
An Italian Brand, made in Tuscany.
Its a chunky boy at 45mm diameter, case thickness in 16mm, but the curved crystal makes it wear smaller that it might look.
Still big though!
The Movement and dial is oil filled?
You can see the Bubble at 12 o'clock.
Tell the time AND check if your kitchen table is level! :mental:
The oil fill gives the dial almost an underwater "glow" in the right light, very groovy.

From the Website:
"The new U-BOAT Darkmoon range characterized by the innovative concept of “Oil Immersion”, tested for the first time in the Capsoil model, where an oil bath completely immerses the Swiss Ronda quartz movement and completely surrounds the dial turning it into a full, deep color"
Whatever,
its pretty unusual and cool.
certainly 'bright'.. not sure if i love it or not

I like the overall style if not the colour, but how do you change the battery without all the oil coming out?

It's an encapsulated chamber inside the case.

Certainly different, especially in having the crown on the left hand side (at "9 o'clock").
called destro watches; for lefties. destro i think means right so worn on right wrist
Ah - I didn't know that was an option.
Think the term ought to be "dextro": from the Latin for left: 'dexter'.

no its destro.. italian i think for righthanded. a watch is usually worn on left hand...

I didn't buy it @Barry it was too much for me. If I look it up and find it's actually a £1k+ watch I'll consider it, but it's more than twice the price of what Roy paid new. Maybe it's a better model/movement.
Thanks Roy

Yes, pricing seems a little optimistic but it appears to be a rare model and people are odd with what they'll pay to get a particular watch, look at all that hoo-ha over the moon swatch and what those tiffany blue rolex ops were changing hands for, madness.
In similar vein to the Seiko

They do a black faced version which is not unlike the Seiko -

Didn’t care for the ‘fuzzy felt’ strap on either watch so the black one gets a textured leather strap and the green one gets a stainless steel bracelet.

This watch has caught my attention. I quite like the look.
I notice around the numbers (55, 15) are some crack like marks.
Is the asking price on the high side?

At that price I'd expect it to be fake
Price is about right/on the high side taking into account the bezel damage.
It’s only 36mm which would be regarded by most as on the small side for a man’s wrist.
It might be on the small size for you, but my watch has a diameter of 34mm and it's big enough for me.

Hi Roy.
I might be on the market for a new watch. My old Pulsar Kinetic is drifting away.
Can you link me some good watch sites? I don't trust eBay, because of fakes etc.

How much are you looking to spend?
Don’t know whether you’ve got a particular brand in mind but it’s worth checking reviews on YouTube to help with your choice.
Once you’ve identified what one you want just Google who’s selling it cheapest and check for money off vouchers available.
As you had a kinetic I’m guessing you want a watch you don’t have to worry about? Look at Citizen eco drives and Casio solars in this connection.

Max budget will be around £350.

A nice watch but more of a dress watch than an everyday beater. The polished case will be prone to scratches likewise seiko’s hardlex crystal isn’t as robust as sapphire as far as scratch resistance is concerned.
In your situation and with that budget I’d get an analogue Casio solar for everyday use (around £100) and an Orient bambino auto (a number of models available for around £200) for high days and holidays.

I like that.
I've always worn a dress watch every day except years ago when I was labouring so wore a Casio.
I like the Armitron I got a couple of weeks back - looks a lot better in real life than in the pictures and not expensive for a flash watch:

Yep. 34mm to 38mm is my comfort zone, and my favourite vintage Omega is 36mm. Anything larger just looks clumsy.

Saw a "Rolex" diver's watch for sale at a local boot sale. Obviously a fake, but a good one. The face looked genuine, the sweep second hand moved with 5 'ticks' per second, the bracelet looked genuine with the correct Rolex motife on the clasp, and even the back (always a giveaway) had what looked like the correct 'serrated' edge to unscrew the back.
But for an asking price of £50 it could have hardly been genuine.
A new acquisition, arrived today

Might have been partly genuine. I have one like that. My brother got it from a Rolex dealer. I've been told that it's not uncommon for high end ringers to be a mix of fake and real parts. Roy might know more about that.

Are the 'high end' marques displayed in the window genuine watches or dummies (that is devoid of a mechanism)? It could be that such an empty case could be fitted with a generic mechanism.

These days it's the 'Superclones' you have to beware of, getting ever closer to the original (they even make a copy of the Rolex movement!).

So, are the high-end watches displayed in jewellers windows genuine or dummies? Some jewellers will remove them from the window when they close (so I assume the watches are genuine), whereas other jewellers don't (thus are display dummies)?

Not sure Barry, for Rolex ‘exhibition only’ models there’s no conclusive information, working and dummy non-working watches have been encountered.

For G Shock aficionados (do we have any?) it’s a G3000 using module 2453 and started production in 2001, potentially 22 years old. It has a cool feature where you can change the display colours.

I've got a fancy Casio the neighbours bought me for my 18th. Have to dig it out and get a battery in it.
Whilst the g shock box is still near the top, this is a DW6900 (module 3230) which also needs a new battery (when you press the light button the display goes off).

The total did surprise me considering I've sold so many, I must have had close on 400 before!
I'd ideally like to get down to 50 nice pieces, I mean why do you need 25 watches that look like a sub when you've got a sub? (maybe one 'homage' you can actually wear without someone wanting to take your arm off and nick it, the watch not the arm...)

Other half wants to buy me a evening dress watch for my birthday but I/we have no idea where to look that won't rip us off, any suggestions would be welcome, I've been told up to £1000 but would prefer it to be a lot lower, but she's paying :-)
Thanks
If you’re going for pre owned have a look at Watchfinder’s website, some nice pieces sub £1000. If you’ve an idea what brand / model you’re after do a Google shopping search for it and find the best price from the bigger jewellers and don’t forget to look for any valid money off vouchers on line. Not really into dress watches but some of the Seiko Presage range have caught my eye eg https://www.seikoboutique.co.uk/product/presage-cocktail-time-skydiving-3/

As it's for evening wear, to wear with a black tie and dinner jacket, then I would suggest a watch with hands and a black leather strap would be appropriate.
I have a gold square cased Bulova with black 'crocodile skin' strap to wear on such occasions.
Whatever you buy, just make sure it is not a diver's watch with a chunky bracelet, or a digital watch - they would look totally 'naff'.
Some pics of my ‘dress’ watches to ponder over what style you might prefer.

Not a bad automatic dress watch for the twenty odd quid I paid for it.Perhaps it's a GMT longitude feature so if you're slightly off the Greenwich meridian you can have a second second hand (if that makes sense) to measure your exact geographical (if not political) time.

Hmm - I quite like that in Bauhaus sort of way. :)
New watch day today, Payday treat.
Fancied something a bit different, have this one in pale blue, but always fancied the green on black "stealth" one as the best looking one.
Though at 44mm its a thick boy, and it hardly disapears on the wrist.
U-Boat "Darkmoon" 44mm in black with green dial.
Cool feature with this one, is that the case is oil filled and you get a spirit-level type air bubble under the crystal?
Has a large domed sapphire crystal, the oil fill really makes the green sunbust dial Pop in the light, as well as giving the illusion the its all dial, with no crystal.
Really unusual look and really catches the eye - I love it, its quirky!

its really for left handed folk
So you are meant to wear it on your right wrist?
I always thought it was a design thing? I wind and set my watches before I put them on so the side the crown is on is immaterial it’s very difficult to do this when the watch is on anyway unless it has a large crown.
So you are meant to wear it on your right wrist?
traditionally yes. most folk wear a watch on their least active side as it were. so to get the crown in a usable position you got leftie watches. but its also a bit of a fashion statement with some brands too

Just a design feature I think, no specific reason.

Exactly this Roy,
part of its design.
The crown is pretty large on it at 8mm, so can use it on the wrist _left or right :)_ no problem.

well italy was in bed with the nazis and whether you supplied the italian divers or the germans, you didnt really have much choice in italy. rolex perhaps had more options but we all know many swiss aided germany; many are german swiss.
Sweden was officially neutral during WW2, yet gave the Germans free passage and access to Norway.
I have a Rolex watch and use Leica and Exacta cameras (both German brands), but I'm not going to let what happened eighty years ago cause me to have a guilty conscience.

Yes I thought the article was a bit judgemental, easy to play Mr Moral Highground from an armchair in a free country.
You don't think of watches as being controversial though. I actually found it while looking to see if the SS issued special watches to their troops (they did).

Nice Roy, my favourite is your Explorer.
Different mood, different watch,
Seiko 5 on orange rubber strap, green textured dial and orange second hand work well with it I think?
The Seiko 5 is a nice update on the SKX, (I had the 007 and 009 Pepsi) and what it lost it gained in ways that are more relevant.
100m v 200m water resistance, no screw down crown.. doesn't matter.
Same case as the SKX, with a better movement and different colour options.
What's not to like?
How many of the complainers actually wore the watch diving to 200m?
ISO certification was handy if you DID, but I reckon most Folk probably wore an SKX because of its reputation.

Can’t go far wrong with a Seiko and I like the new 5, here’s a selection of some old and some new.
Orange strap looks good, a bit alternative. I have a friend who always wears outrageously coloured natos with his various timepieces, including a classic Tudor chrono, a Bell & Ross and a variety of Seiko Turtles.

In terms of storing your collection they don't take up much room (but the boxes do!).
I'm intrigued by the vast number of different designs available and each manufacturers take on what a divers / dress / sports / etc. watch should look like. Not sure how I got to that many but I have eased up on the purchasing and am selling more than buying just now. Apart from anything else there's not much that takes my fancy at the moment and I've stopped buying 'cheapies' because they're basically worthless and not worth the effort of trying to sell them on the bay so kind of stuck with those, might end up selling them as a job lot.

How accurate are the Seiko automatics ? I ask because I have a Seiko Kinetic which barely loses or gains in months and would like to replace it. It's one of their diver's watches in black finish but wearing it all day, every day even when gardening and decorating, it's covered with scratches and looking a bit tatty.
I want a stainless watch to replace it and the Seiko 5 looks good to me.
I bought a Rolex Submariner back in 1970 and recently had it serviced by Rolex for the princely sum of £2200. Gave it to my Son for his birthday and really miss it but what's the point when a Seiko is just as robust and is more accurate ? He is enjoying it now and I can take it off the insurance.
The cost Rolex charge for their servicing is absurd. A couple of years ago I needed to have the bracelet changed on my Rolex. Thinking that was all I would have to pay for, I didn’t think it would cost too much, but was disappointed when the Rolex agent told me Rolex wouldn't do anything without servicing the watch first. Since I had to have the bracelet changed, I had no option - resulting in a whacking bill.
Were it not for the fact the watch was a 21st birthday present to me from my parents, knowing what the servicing cost would be, I think I might have sold the watch instead.

The service I had was very thorough and included a new bracelet (kept the old one) a new bezel and they threw in a valuation in a faux leather folder. It's a very expensive watch now so I guess you have to pay a corresponding amount for servicing. Oh and they gave us Champagne all round when we collected the watch.:champagne:
TBH, the Seiko is far more accurate than the Rolex has ever been and the fit n finish is superb. Practically, I prefer the Seiko but I've loved my Rolex for 53 years now. My Son is enjoying it now but it's a bit of a poisoned chalice as he has to insure it and that is expensive.
Plenty of info here

For info their workhorse 4R35 aka NH35 (which a lot of micro brands use) is given as +45 / -35 seconds a day (can be regulated if you could be bothered, I never have).

Thanks for that but a bit heavy going for me.
When you quote +45/-35 seconds a day, is what it looks like - could lose 35 seconds a day or gain 45 seconds a day ? Surely that is extremely inaccurate. My Rolex used to lose 5 seconds a day and that drove me nuts.
I'm attracted to a couple of Prospex diver's watches. Are they good ?

I'd imagined the accuracy figures (you're interpreting the figures correctly) were worst case straight out of the factory but no, not that simple - https://www.seikowatches.com/my-en/customerservice/faq/mechanical
A few online watch reviewers criticise Seiko for quality management issues and suggest they're somewhat overpriced but I've never had any particular issues over the years I've been buying them and always found them to be a quality product.
Had one of the premium dive watches and it was excellent, only reason I moved it on was that it was a little bulky on my wrist.
This was the one I had - Seiko Padi Prospex SRPA83K1.

I like Orients, in particular their Bambino dress watches are excellent. Other than Orient anything decently made with a Seiko movement in is fine, even Invictas!
