Ali Express sale, around the sixty quid mark [emoji846]
A very good friend passed away last December and in his will he has left me a watch. It's a Tissot Seastar Navigator Chronograph from the late 1970's. It is in need of a service, it runs but stops after a while, hopefully just dried up oils and nothing broken. It's in very good condition, all original with the box, previous service history and the original sales receipt from when he bought it new from an official Tissot dealer. Hopefully I will get it collected from the solicitor who I ask to keep it safe as I can't get out to pick it up. When I have it I'll post some photos here. A very thoughtful gift from my old mate.
Worth getting fixed Ian.
A strong happy memory Sir,
worth far more than any watch.
Anytime you check the time?
Well..
Meanwhile...
My Parnis 'Top Gun's strap finally gave up,
didn't want it sitting unused so put it on a Breitling Navitimer strap.
Life in the old dog yet I think.
(yes, the dates off lol)

Nice one Ian, look forward to the photos.
Lorus today, this one has an older Seiko movement you can only wind with movement so it’ll probably stop soon…

Most definitely Gaz. I have a favourite watchmaker who does amazing work, athough I'm based on the south coast I use a chap in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, proper highly skilled expert and very fair prices. He's quoted me around £350 plus any parts that may be needed but that does include a new seconds hand as the current one has faded from bright orange to pale pink!!!. My brother put me on to him as he's been having his watches maintained there for thirty odd years and always gets great service.
I did try to learn watchmaking many years ago but my sausage fingers and bad temper tantrums when trying to find springs that have pinged off went against tackling anything worthwhile lol.
My friend also left me some other watches, a Swiss Emperor chrono and a couple of Citizen Eco Drives, all nice items.

Usually just use a roll, something like this
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203998895485?hash=item2f7f481d7d:g:UNoAAOSw~jFiDlu T
I wrap a small hand towel round it as well for added padding.

Not happy with Breitling,
Sent my watch in as there was an issue with the crown not screwing in properly and in a years ownership from new the crown has progressively got worse , I’m thinking it’s under warranty so there shouldn’t be an issue right ?
No not at Breitling it would appear , they claim that the watch has sustained an impact/shock , absolute BS .
So I now have a fight on my hands with them , £320 they want , I’m fuming [emoji35]
Lesson learned ( stick to my G-Shock [emoji1787])

Never been keen on Breitlings, not sure why, maybe the designs?
Having said that I've bought uglier watches, not for what Breitlings go for though!

On my wrist today, and will be for a long time, is my Alpina Geneve Startimer Chronograph on a handmade (by Pavel) Horween burgundy leather strap.
Love this piece. Such amazing clarity and can be easily read by eyes with slightly naff short distance focus (i.e. mine). :D

I foresee that Pagani watches will eventually break away from their 'homage' basis and start creating some discrete designs. Their manufacturing quality is excellent given the retail prices they sell for.

I've been having a bit of a clear out recently, mainly moving on the 'big' watches (this one's 48mm excluding the crown) and was going to list this on ebay.
Was pleased (in a way) that there seems to be an issue with the movement being a bit loose inside the case (doesn't affect the watches function it's just that I've had a few, shall we say 'critical' buyers on the bay who expect a used forty quid parnis to look like a brand new rolex) so I'm keeping it :)
Nasty Casio for today, not even a g shock!, got some diy to do. Solar powered so probably the only watch you’d ever need.

Yep, mesh strap can make even an Invicta look classy!
Said Invicta was gaining six minutes an hour! (don't remember it doing that last time I wore it?).
Had the back off and regulated it, losing a minute an hour now.

Bought from an authorized dealer, who have bought from before, and checked with Tag . I like the style and they don’t really lose money. At my age you have to enjoy a few treats, vinyl, watches, wine, whisky, decent car etc., and some new hifi every so often

As a Scot, always careful with our money Grant, but like everyone else concerned about the rising bills. Lucky I took some decent financial advice a few years ago before I retired but with the current state of the markets and interest rates, you need to be smart about what ever funds you have.

That's very nice, but you are wearing that WAY too tight. It'll cause all manner of hand problems if you're not careful. May take years to manifest too. I know a chap who lost all feeling in his hand from wearing watches too tight. Ideallly you should be able to comfortably put a finger betwixt strap and wrist.

That photo was taken at least a year ago, additional links were added.
I wouldn't say I'm keen on watches, I only have two, but I've browsed this thread often and I thought I'd let you know that I recently bought a MeisterSinger from a friend who is keen on watches and who has quite a collection. I've done a search and couldn't find any mention of MeisterSinger on the thread so it seems it's a first for the thread.
Very elegant looking watches: the great majority of which use a leather strap. No chunky tachymetre controls or excessively thick and heavy diving watches. Like the use of a single hand - I've not seen that before.
https://www.iguanasell.co.uk/collections/meistersinger?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_vTdn4CL-gIViu3tCh0CHA8DEAAYASAAEgJxJfD_BwE
I've liked the look of them for quite a while and sort of half hankered after one for a while. A little while ago I went to see him for the evening and noticed a MeisterSinger box on the side so mentioned it to him, it turns out he recently bought it but wasn't going to keep it, it was a bit too small for him (he's a big strong bloke) but it fitted much better on my skinny wrist, so it changed hands.

Expensive novelty watches, style over substance, ok if you only need a rough idea of what the time is.
Well, I agree you would need to read the watch more carefully and yet would only have a idea of the time to within 5 - 7 minutes. But for some people (my partner for example) that is quite sufficient. I should have said I'm intrigued by the use of a single hand.
Still elegant looking.

Kind of defeats the object of having an analogue watch if you have to make that much allowance for it's 'shortcomings' but I agree they're quite elegant looking (mind you the one pictured would look better on a matching black strap without any contrasting stitching). And no clearer than this Timex though
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50822180688_3d2ac880a9_o.jpg
Thinking about it it's like having just a gmt function (4th hand on this Explorer 2 with time indicated on the fixed bezel)
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51160418441_0cff1d9ef0_o.jpg
A quick google reveals there are other single handed watches available, might add one to the collection.

The minute hand shows the correct time for both hour hands on a gmt so it’s just a case of picking the right hour hand to pair with it.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51160418441_0cff1d9ef0_o.jpg
A quick google reveals there are other single handed watches available, might add one to the collection.
That Timex look nice, but I find your Rolex confusing. The white hands indicate the time is 1:23, yet the orange hand is pointing to 18:20. If it's GMT, it should read 13:20.

If it's GMT, it should read 13:20.I think the GMT allows you to have 2 time zones when travelling, by setting the GMT hour different to the hour hand (but with the minutes being the same).

Solid little watch for the price, think I paid less than £40 when I bought it, bracelet was a bit rattly though hence the replacement leather strap.

Very elegant looking watches: the great majority of which use a leather strap. No chunky tachymetre controls or excessively thick and heavy diving watches. Like the use of a single hand - I've not seen that before.

Yes, and I can say that without fear of contraception :)
The old Seiko was being a bit erratic (kept stopping, the movement doesn’t allow for hand winding, probably needs a service) so as I’m going out tonight exchanged it for this left hooker (which is actually older than the Seiko).

I know what you mean, but rarely does working out strictly and cleanly, paying attention to form, damage joints. The muscles should take the load away from the joints reducing wear.
Job related physical work usually does the opposite though as it's rarely controlled.
But, we've all got to fall off the perch eventually, so I may as well go buff.

They’re ok with most having Seiko movements, build quality used to be a bit ‘meh’ with rattly bracelets etc. but that’s improved over time.

Fair enough. As you might suspect I prefer leather straps to bracelets. My Rolex was originally available with a black leather strap, and despite the quality of their bracelets, would be interested in having a leather strap fitted - but Rolex don't offer that option anymore.

Thanks, got it from an online dealer, Jura watches, I swear they didn't size it right, PITA. It's hard finding places local to do this, as most jewelers can be bothered with these minor tasks.

As you have so many watches do you set them every day? I have about 4, but I don't wear them to work, so wear them about 3/4 days a week, usually have to reset them, unless I've worn one on consecutive days. I recently learned there was such a thing as a watch winder!! I got my Seiko strap sorted at a friendly local jeweler, £6 was cheap I think.

Just set the one’s I’m going to wear (pluralised that because I don’t always end up wearing my first choice!). My second / third choice then might go on the winder for wearing later in the week.

New arrival, another pilot’s watch! This one’s apparently a one off custom build with a Seiko movement.

I like skeleton watches, fine when you don’t need to tell the time!

This is now my most worn piece; an OceanX Sharkmaster 1,000m in Rose Gold.
By far and away, this watch has drawn more comments and admiring glances than all of my other watches. Women particularly like it, which is why I wear it. :D
I love it too.

I think you'll find it's very handy at the local swimming pool. :D
But I don't go there, so you're right.
Occasionally I get a few rain drops on it though.

it decompresses helium from a watch if used in a underwater decompression chamber and youve been breathing a helium mix in very deep water. its not likely to happen to 99.999999999% of pop lol...but it looks cool.
is it an auto one or does it have a second screw

My ladyfriend stopped last night so I kept what are regarded by many (but not me :) ) as normal hours, in bed by 12 (which became 11) then I was awake at the crack of sparrows.

Is there a good way to check manufacturers stated specs? By that I mean accuracy, this King Seiko I've bought is supposed to be accurate to within 15-25 secs per day, but how to reliably verify that? Also, how do I know when it's fully wound? Looking at a black dial Sarb033 at the minute, I do like black dials.

If it’s losing or gaining half a minute a day by the end of the week it’ll either be three and a half minutes slow or fast. No biggy in my book, I don’t even wear the same watch for a week. If it hasn’t lost or gained any time (which I suspect will be the case) don’t panic Captain Mainwaring.
Another Spinnaker?
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221031/35fabf2bc47fdca5a71cecfa9f611bab.jpg
Be open face (no lid over the dial), size 18 or 16 (Lancashire Gauge for measuring watches, as measured at the dial plate, size 18 equals 1 23/30" or 44.86 mm, size 16 equals 1 11/16" or 43.18 mm) read more about watch sizes (http://www.railswest.com/time/detail/watchsizepop.html)
Plain white dial, bold black hands, and bold Arabic numbers
Have the winding stem at 12 o'clock
Be lever set (to set the time, the case had to be opened, lever pulled out to set the hands, to prevent an accidental change, rather than pendant set)
Have a minimum of 17 jewels, a double roller, steel escape wheel, micrometric regulator and grade on back plate
Be adjusted to at least 5 positions (stem up, left side up, right side up, face up and face down)
Temperature compensated for 34 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit
Keep time accurately to within a gain or loss no more than than 30 seconds a week.

I am very fortunate to have these three watches. Picture 2 my Michael Phelps Planet Ocean Omega Seamaster Automatic, Picture 3 my Quartz Omega Deville (A watch that is not really befitting of the name Omega as its not a mechanical movement for which Omega are rightly regarded as amongst the finest manufacturers of movement watches in the world) lastly but by no means least, pic 4 my father's Omega Geneve circa 1973, mechanical movement a Christmas present from my late mother and with me while I arrange having it serviced and cleaned. (Although to be fair it keeps pretty much perfect time, despite to my knowledge having only been serviced once its lifetime!)
