View Full Version : Anyone keen on watches?
I am very fortunate to have these three watches. Picture 2 my Michael Phelps Planet Ocean Omega Seamaster Automatic, Picture 3 my Quartz Omega Deville (A watch that is not really befitting of the name Omega as its not a mechanical movement for which Omega are rightly regarded as amongst the finest manufacturers of movement watches in the world) lastly but by no means least, pic 4 my father's Omega Geneve circa 1973, mechanical movement a Christmas present from my late mother and with me while I arrange having it serviced and cleaned. (Although to be fair it keeps pretty much perfect time, despite to my knowledge having only been serviced once its lifetime!)
Some nice pieces.
I have a Planet Ocean (& you've given me a perfect excuse for another gratuitous wrist shot :) )

Only the dial is old (70 years?) the rest of the watch is fairly new, custom build with a Seagull ST36 mechanical movement.

It seems there are two Chinese manufacturers called Seagull. One makes watch movements (in fact quarter of the global output!), the other cameras: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seagull_Camera.

If it’s losing or gaining half a minute a day by the end of the week it’ll either be three and a half minutes slow or fast. No biggy in my book, I don’t even wear the same watch for a week. If it hasn’t lost or gained any time (which I suspect will be the case) don’t panic Captain Mainwaring.
]
Over about 4/5 days watch appears to have gained 1 minute, so is within manufacturing specs of -+ 15-25 secs per day.

That’s not too bad then, not like any of us live our life to the second so having a rough idea what time it is is all most of us need.

I've got an Omega seamaster from mid 60s, and weirdly for such a plain watch, strangers often recognise it's an Omega, they have very unassuming dials, but even from far away they have that Omega look to them. I do like a 36mm watch, hate the big 42mm one's popular today.

Indeed, just one more for the collection, probably won't even get worn, straight in the safety deposit box...
Reminded me of a massive Invicta I used to have, think that was 60mm, was like having an alarm clock duct taped to your wrist.
At least the new Rolex is titanium so shouldn't be over heavy.

Yes they have a decent value. Often in thousands.
Even my old pockets were at peak in low hundreds, less now I bet.

Would have been better had they enlarged the dial and reduced the width of the rather vulgar-looking bezel marked: DEEPSEA CHALLENGE RING LOCK SYSTEM. It would make the watch easier to read underwater (which is the intention, rather than pandering to a 'matcho'-look).

I have one of these fun little pieces coming in this week. An Accurist 7365 Retro Racer Chrono. Bicompax dial, no running seconds hand for the time (dead face), a compact 39mm cushion case, and slim. Looks pretty, and was an absolute snip at £70. So much value these days.
The Milanese will be removed immediately and I have a black/grey/orange stripe de-G10'd NATO going on there.

I remember those being released. Lovely constellation lume if I remember correctly.
Not ventured far today so haven’t been wearing a watch but I’m selling a couple on eBay so needed to track down some spare bracelet links. Couldn’t find those but came across a decent rubber strap with a deployment clasp, thought it would go well on Steeldive’s take on a Captain Willard.

That's nice, I'm after a dive watch now, must be 39mm or less though, I like the vintage look. Was looking at the Tudor black bay 58, at around £3k, but then started seeing similar by the likes of Rema and especially Squale - whose movements are just as accurate as the Tudor at +- 5 spd. Although the Black bay is lovely, the Squales at a third of the price perhaps might be my option.
ive a tudor copy.. think this is it.

Certina, that's another name I've been noticing in these watch reviews, one of the many not so well known Swiss brands, I mean if the movements are as trust worthy as the likes of Omega and Rolex, and they certainly look as good, then might as well save yourself a few thousand bucks. Squale have got a massive catalogue too, reissuing a lot of their old stuff from the 50s-70s, which makes the likes of me very happy! I love that era for watches, but the accuracy of these old time pieces puts me off. Though i do lust after an old Rolex or Tudor date watch oyster watch, with the magified date window.
Nice, what colour is the bezel?
blue, but not garish. but you can get black too or could. not bad for a cheapish price. keeps decnt time too(auto)

Very nice, those submariners are such a classic design. I noticed the Citizen's bezel was quite unmarked for quite an old watch, do you know what it's made from? Thinking of getting the Tudor black bay 58, but I think the bezel is made of Ali, and that puts me off, as ceramic is harder wearing, so more scratch resistant, as I'd actually like to wear a dive watch for sea swimming come summer.

Yeh, I noticed they were better value than some of the other brands, well, the model I ended up getting seemed to be anyway, got a submariner copy, just shy of £500, as I was turned down for credit on a £3k Tudor, lol. I like the utilitarian look of the squales, won't be too upset if I scratch it while diving (sitting on a beach with a can of beer).
Finally got a mechanical Flieger B, been looking out for the Laco version but settled on this one from Ali Express at fifty odd notes, arrived much earlier than their 6th December estimate.

Think the current collection is around the 200 mark? Quick audit of last three months shows I’ve sold 20 watches and purchased 7 so numbers are intentionally reducing (but the next three months could be the reverse of that depending on what catches my eye!). Many of them are low value (around the £40 - £50 mark) but I do have a dozen or so more esoteric pieces.

WOW 200 watches! I just have the one a simple datejust Rolex from about 20 years ago.
Most 'normal' people have just one watch. In my case it is a 50 year old Rolex.
But collectors are a different species: you can only drive one car at a time, so why have several? But car collectors do. The same is for watch collectors.
Also I shouldn't be too hard on collectors - if you saw the amount of audio gear I have, you would wonder why.

They do a 40mm version too, but it put me off after reading the movement was only £15, what else makes up the rest of the watches value? The look great though. I also wonder does the oil leak eventually.

it makes dial very readable at any angle even uner water. also the glass wont fog if temp goes down rapidly ..
i guess folk think its cool too, but you have to use the right oil. a lot of folk do it themselves. the oil is dialetric and i guess you would need to make sure there is a washer on the pullout lol

As Grant said above, I believe it makes the dial more readable, and on say a black dial, makes it inky black, like I said though, once you know what the movement costs it kind of kills it for me.

I have had the pleasure of seeing a Ressence Type 3 watch in person. I can only say it was absolutely amazing in its clarity, and although my partner commented that it looked like an Apple Watch it amazed me that it was all a mechanical movement. If I had a spare £32,000 at the time I would've purchased it there and then <lol>
https://ressencewatches.com/innovation/oil-filled
Look at this youtube to get an idea of what it looks like click https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3eCnjtkb2w&ab_channel=TeddyBaldassarre
Oil filled watches anyone? Some of these look great, but almost a grand for a quartz movement which on its own is only £15!!!
https://www.firstclasswatches.co.uk/u-boat-darkmoon-44mm-cardinal-red-ipb-rubber-strap-8697b-p-68728/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgcz9qsnC-wIVxfntCh1RtQnREAEYASAFEgLJyPD_BwE&correct_country=222&glCountry=GB&glCurrency=GBP
Looks like a complete gimmick, and ugly with it. Mind you with the air bubble it could always double up as a spirit level.
Only one I saw the dial looked to be outside of the glass. Was weird but pretty cool. I guess it's what you like. If you read up on it you could do it yourself .

Got me new submariner wannabe, the Squale 20 atmos. Little bit underwhelmed with the dial, wish I got the white dial markers now rather than the vintage lume, but I reckon it'll grow on me, looking forward to wearing it swimming, and getting a bit of wear on it, ceramic bezel, so less prone to marks as I understand. Supposed to have a pretty decent movement too, much better than many watches at it's price point - £500. Must admit, don't want many more watches, but I do lust after a vintage 50s/60s Rolex or is it Tudor Prince with the bubble date? 36mm, gorgeous little watch.

Should have been more specific, when the crown's pulled out to adjust the hands pulling the crown out moves the date wheel onto the next date then springs back to the hand wind position, does that make sense? Quite ingenious really.

One thing that bugs me about this watch is the three different fonts on the face.

One wonders what having oil in the watch brings to the party?
I have a Sinn UX Hydro EZM 2B which is oil filled. Readable from almost any angle, no mirroring of the dial under water, and (essentially) unlimited diving depth, although it's rated to 5,000m.
The most wonderful piece of engineering ever. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and post them.

Last week I sold all of my watches and bought that one and a Sinn 857 UTC. I'm only buying Sinns from now on as they're the only watch manufacturer who do it for me.
I've owned well in excess of a thousand watches over the years, and for me nothing compares to a Sinn. I've had them all; Omegas, Breitlings, Rolexes, Seikos, IWCs, etc etc.
The 857 UTC...

I really wish I got the white dial markers with this watch, the 'old lume' isn't that attractive, and the white markers of the bezel put them in the shade, which isn't what you want with a dial. A nice watch, but reckon I might sell it on Ebay and get the white markers version. I got it from Gnomon watches which seems to be much cheaper than UK sites. That's the bad thing about buying on the web, the good thing is choice, as I doubt very much whether any watch shops in Brighton sell Squale.

Oooo...this thread has some stunning watches on!!
I'm not into watches as I know very little about them so would really value you guys opinions. I have around 700 to buy a reliable watch to last me a long time. What do I need to consider? I like the idea of a mechanical or automatic watch and I like that smooth movement on the seconds hand. I dont like an overly fussy face with lots of dials, I dont have large wrists so nothing to scubadivey with loads of chunky buttons on the side. I also don't know how I'd fare with a bracelet strap.
Any suggestions?
I've been looking at Tissot seastar 1000 powermatic 80 and also some of the seikos around that price. Also like the look of the Nite ones.
My wife like the Raymond Wells.
Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Try the Gnomon website is amazing value, lots of watches around the £500 mark. Seiko also do some nice mid range watches, though the movements aren't so tight, reliable, but lose about 2 minutes a week, that may not bother everyone though. The Tissot is I think 43mm, you may want something around 40mm if you have small wrists.

Will be heading off on holiday in the coming weeks and looking recommendations for watch travel cases probably for 2 or 3 watch.

I generally use something like this -

With a t shirt or jumper rolled round it for extra padding.
Three watches accompanied me to Bournemouth but wore this one most

Got a couple of those and in the cheaper version found that the watches, although held on their cushions, rattled around inside the container (suppose you could use some foam to hold them in place?). The more expensive version I have has press studs either side of the cushions to hold them in place which is better but I found doing the press studs up to be a bit of a faff. Hence why I've reverted to the simple roll.
yeah i'd add a bit of bubble wrap inside too to tighten it up. good point
Just to illustrate you can see the cheap one on the left doesn’t hold the cushions securely whereas the one with the press studs on the right does but can be a pain. The other consideration is that they do take rather a lot of space up just to carry three watches.

Just to complicate matters further (!) these are ideal for a weekend away for just one extra watch (but you can get two in eg a strap watch inside a bracelet watch).

Why would one want to take three watches on holiday?
Why would one want to take three watches on holiday?
Speaking as an extreme case (I change my watch almost daily) you, at the very least (IMHO), need two watches - a sports watch for daytime wear and a dress watch for the evening.
I also regard a watch as part of an outfit so will often tie in the dial colour with the top / shirt I'm wearing ( ).

Yes, but the 'dress watch' I have has a leather strap, so happily lives in the pocket of my dinner jacket, along with the black tie.
Admire your dress sense in matching the colour of the watch dial with that of the top. I do the same with socks - matching the colour with the shirt (unless the shirt is white: never, ever wear white socks unless it's with trainers. If the shirt is white I will match the colour of the tie, or the pullover.)

Ah, so if you were going on a holiday which included a formal black tie evening or evenings (say a cruise where you'd no doubt be at the captain's table ;) ) you'd automatically be taking two watches as your dress one travels with your dj?
I'll admit a lot of it is affectation and might instigate an interesting conversation with a fellow watch aficionado.

I have a friend who has progressively 'de-socialised' to the point he rarely leaves the house. He has sold his car. All his shopping is delivered; and if people didn't call he wouldn't see anyone.
He can just slob around the house wearing whatever he wants.

Interesting - the watch I wear every day (and even wear it in bed) is waterproof (a Rolex Oyster), yet I will take it off when showering.

I usually wear my Apple Watch during the day and a Tag at night, even though it’s waterproof I usually just use the Apple Watch
