Why does an American watch brand have a French day names?
Apart from that, it's a very nice looking watch.

Why else would an American watch maker make a day-date watch that bore French words for the days of the week?

Any of these in your collection Roy? Ebay is full of them, it looks like folk may have been buying them up, hoping to turn a profit. All the planets are covered, plus the sun and the moon, but it's the Uranus one that appeals to the schoolboy in me  Oh God let me rephrase that - appeals to my schoolboy mindset :)

They didn’t really appeal to me and were very difficult to get hold of anyway.
I thought they kind of devalued the Omega brand being nothing more than glorified Swatches and turned out not to be that well made, especially the one from Uranus.

What an annoying mixture of Roman and Arabic numerals. Would drive me barmy. Is it tradition in watches/clocks that Roman numerals face to the centre while Arabic are upright? That bothers me more than the mix of types, at least they logically alternate.

Still can't open the link, but I can understand your problem. IMO, today's men's watches are far too big, chunky and 'macho'. It's probably fashionable, but my watch of 50 years has a dial diameter of about 26.5mm:

I hope the current trend for big watches has run it's course.
I also think that a lot of current men's watches (particularly Rolex) are too 'blingy'.

Nice, is that a yellow dial or just 'yellowed'? I have large hands and normal sized bone structure, but little muscle, so I also like to wear smaller watches, max 40mm, preferable size is 38mm, but also wear old 36mms. For me austere is the best look for watches, one or two colours, brushed metal rather than shiny, and absolutely no ****ing diamantes!!

My two Rolex, not too 'blingy' I think? Reasonably sized at 40mm for the Sub and 42mm for the Explorer.

That's a pretty cool watch, I would wear something like that.
The big watches look silly to me, even on blokes with forearms like Popeye. I don't get the appeal at all.

It's not a good photograph, so it doesn't show the (vertically brushed) silver finish of the dial, which in daylight looks white. The photo was taken with 'white' LED table lamp with an oatmeal coloured shade. The "yellow" look is simply reflection of the light - though I'm sure Rolex would describe it as 'champagne'.

I like the look of them, and maybe don't understand the dimensions quoted. Is it the diameter of the dial, excluding the escutcheon, or is it the overall width of the case? Your Submariner looks to have the same relative fit to your wrist as mine, yet the Explorer look to be too big.
Regarding appearance, chronometers have their place especially if you are, say, a pilot or a genuine explorer - but for everyday wear they just look OTT.
I can understand your reluctance to wear them in public, yet there has only been one occasion whilst travelling when I have taken it off my wrist, out of a sense of etiquette and decorum. That was when I was wandering around the back streets of Aden in Yemen. Over 50 years, and having visited over 70 countries, it only leaves my wrist when I shower (a bit unnecessary seeing it is a Rolex 'Oyster' and completely waterproof!) - but then that's me.
good watch... would have been great with the mighty groundhogs cover:)

The diameter includes the bezel but excludes the crown. The Explorer is 2mm larger but feels fine on wrist. I don't think the close up pictures give a proper idea of how they look in reality, I was concentrating on photographing the watch rather than giving consideration to demonstrating how it was wearing.
Excellent review here

Perhaps it does wear a little large?
Anyway now I’ve gone to the trouble of getting it out of the safe and setting it it has usurped the eco drive as watch of the day.

Now you're talking Grant!
Thanks Roy. Based on your definition, my watch has a diameter of 33.5mm, so I guess I would be able to wear a watch of 40mm diameter.
I should have added that the Rolex watch that would interest me would be the now discontinued Milgauss:
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/5777/4285/t/3/assets/rolex-milgauss-1680078402825_800x.jpg?v=1680078404
I would choose the version with a black dial, but I don't really like the zig-zag second hand. I'm a fussy bugger!
Thinking about it, I could happily settle for the 2023 'Explorer':

No, they're all 'exhibition only' pieces.

So they are fully working, but not for sale.

There was talk that they were dummy pieces but this was pooh poohed I believe?
In any case, whether they are real or not, you can't just go into a Rolex boutique and buy a watch (unless you're very very lucky and sometimes they might have a ladies model that nobody wants).
That's the reason both my Rolexs are worth double what I paid for them retail.

Chatting to a Rolex agent they are ‘demo models’, when a replacement comes into stock they then can be sold, I said IF I was buying a ‘new’ Rolex I’d want the factory fresh model not one that had in/out the window and on numerous wrists, bounced off the counter etc but he told me that’s not the way it works,.
Any Rolex dealer would not allow the watch to be "bounced off the counter". They always lay down a velvet cloth on the counter, and I suspect will not allow you to see how the watch looks on your wrist in daylight, outside the shop.

I’ve seen watches accidentally dropped and a thin bit of ‘velvet’ cloth won’t break it’s fall, I have tried watches outside in daylight although often accompanied by someone from the shop, camera shops have happily allowed me to take expensive* lens outside to test without me leaving my watch on the counter as security.
*Sometimes more expensive than a Rolex.

Recently had my 1970 Submariner serviced which I then gave to my Son. The jeweller, Mappin and Webb, laid it out on a red velvet cushion, not a cloth and threw in with the cost, a leather bound estimate and Champagne all round.
My Rolex was bought from Mappin & Webb, and I take it to be serviced there. Last time I looked the velvet cloth looked to be thick enough to break a fall from wrist to the counter top. If any watch was damaged by such a fall, it doesn't say much about the watch. I would imagine all Rolexes are sufficiently shock proof.
But to be fair, I have never seen anyone try on a Rolex, so maybe a cushion is used on those occasions.
I too have tested a lens outside a photographic shop, and whilst expensive (an f/4.8, 280mm telephoto) it cost was less than my camera to which it was attached (a Leica M3/M4).

Bought my Explorer 2 from Goldsmith’s and can confirm that a great deal of care was taken whilst I tried the watch on etc. ( it was destickered before purchase, I’ve heard that ALL the stickers need to be returned to Rolex). I’m sure similar care was taken when I got my Sub but at the time I was so excited to find one available retail I almost took the salesperson’s hand off. Did try a second hand Daytona on at Watchfinder’s and in this instance had to show id before they let me try it on.

From Wiki:
"The Hamilton Watch Company is a Swiss (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_watch) manufacturer of wristwatches based in Bienne (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biel/Bienne), Switzerland. Founded in 1892 as an American firm, the Hamilton Watch Company ended American manufacture in 1969."

That's because they have dials that are too 'busy' and cluttered. Garry's watch is plain and clear: there is no need in everyday life for a tachyometer facility (or whatever it is on the bezel of the first watch shown ).

Next night I got chatted up by an attractive blonde lady (had to look behind me, thought she was talking to someone else). Being the simple soul I am I saw no wrong in it and said to the light of my life when I returned to our table I said ‘still got it!’, well let me tell you it very nearly got cut off later that night.

“In America by the 1890s and the early 20th century, manufacturers attempted to sell more children’s and infants’ clothes by color-coding them,” she said. Some manufacturers branded pink for boys and blue for girls, and vice versa.
In 1927, there were a lot of regional differences reported between how stores characterized the color, Steele said. Stores like Best & Co. in Manhattan and Marshall Field in Chicago branded pink as a boy’s color. Others like Macy’s in Manhattan and Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia identified pink as a girl’s color.
“There was no unanimity at all,” Steele said. “People were starting to think by the 1920s, because of the manufacturer’s attempt, that there was a distinction between pink and blue for boys and girls.”
Steele believes that the acquisition of two 18th-century paintings by American millionaire Henry Huntington started turning the tide in favor of pink being a girls’ color. “The Blue Boy” depicted a boy dressed in blue, and “Pinkie” portrayed a girl in pink attire.
Huntington’s purchase was widely publicized in the American press, Steele said. People started thinking that for hundreds of years, blue had been for boys and pink had been for girls. But this wasn’t true, she said.
“If you look back, little boys in the 18th century wore blue and pink, and grown-up men wore blue and pink, and ladies and little girls wore blue and pink,” Steele said.
What do they know? They can't even spell the word "colour"!
The Americans are the only country in the world who ascribe the colour red to right-wing politics, and blue to the left.

One of them you had to press a button for it to display the time.

red display? i had one got in early 70's i guess. remember them at time being fairly rare but having to press a button was a pain. was as the display drew a lot of power so only stayed up for 6 secs or so
We referred to the red led ones as Kojak watches at school because he wore one, presumably he was one of the first seen sporting one on tv.

Good enough, case seems pretty solid and well finished, the bracelet not so solid but adequate.
Took it to the watch bloke down the market to have the bracelet adjusted, he wasn't too impressed with it but you can't be too picky for £32 delivered.
It's a good looking watch IMO and it's quite small so right size for me, doesn't look like I've got a kitchen clock strapped to my wrist.
