To be certified as a chronometer, the watch must keep correct time to within a minute a month, that is +/- 2 seconds a day. Your Rolex would have needed a service to restore its chronometer status.

What about the blue back-lit meters on McIntosh power amplifiers? :D
What about the blue back-lit meters on McIntosh power amplifiers? :D
I never used to like the McIntosh look but recently it has grown on me - it least it is a 'look' as opposed to just a bland silver box.
Agreed, it does have a house look. But then so do most equipment marques: Quad; Leak; Audio Research; Yamaha, etc.
Most of my gear is black, but some of it is Quad 'snot green' ( ). I do have one piece on view which is silver; unfortunately it is not available in black.

You stayed in the house then Roy? Getting a Rolex nicked can happen anywhere these days.
Well there was only the three meters between my front door and my car then the same the other end at my lady friends house to worry about. Suppose I could have been waylaid en route but how would they have known I was wearing a Rolex?
I've worn my Rolex everyday since I was given it 53 years ago.
It has been with me on my travels to 75 countries around the world and I have never had a problem with security.
The secret is not to flaunt it.

I would imagine they’d be on the look out for more current models and probably wouldn’t even recognise your watch as being a Rolex.
It doesn’t even need to be the genuine article these days

All the better for me that it is not a 'blingy' Rolex. But is genuine enough for Rolex to charge me a fortune every time I have it serviced.
WHat do you wear it on your member or something? I mean how do you not flaunt it?
To answer your asinine question: I wear it American style, with the body of the watch on the inside of the wrist.

Not sure what constitutes a blingy Rolex?
You said the secret was not to flaunt it but then if no one knows you're wearing a Rolex you don't need to worry.
If the servicing costs concern you just get a Casio, more accurate than a Rolex and just 50p for a battery every 3 or 4 years.
To answer your asinine question: I wear it American style, with the body of the watch on the inside of the wrist.
I never saw that until I went to secondary school and noticed a couple of the younger teachers wore their watches the wrong way.
Didn't realise it was an American thing?

Anyone with eyes in their head, and knows what to look for, can spot a Rolex. It's a game I play when travelling on the London Underground: spotting genuine watches from Chinese copies.
I have no concern with servicing costs - I only have it done every five years or so.
Anyone with eyes in their head, and knows what to look for, can spot a Rolex. .
Not true these days.
Even an expert would need to use a loupe to confirm authenticity.
Anyway to reiterate my original point I wouldn’t wear or indeed ‘flaunt’ either of my definitely non-blingy Rolexes in a potentially threatening environment but you do you.
A Submariner isn't a blingy watch - IMO.

The reason I mentioned it is I was once mugged the day I bought a Longines watch. I was wearing cufflinks and being a large crown watch it wouldn't go under the cuff. I was on my way home from a work do and the next thing I knew was waking up in hospital with a fractured eye socket and no watch, phone or wallet.
No, let’s have it right, you said ‘The secret is not to flaunt it’ which comes across as a piece of advice no?
That’s different to saying you didn’t flaunt it when travelling by wearing it like an American which would be your choice.
I can read and you misquoted yourself.
Anyway it’s my choice how and where I wear my watches, being told to wear it anywhere in the world (but without flaunting it) won’t change that.
End of.
ive had a few decent pocketwatches although not silly pricey.. doubt muggers would be interested and its in a pocket and on a chain. not had any expensive watches
No, you claim I flaunt my wristwatch. I wear it everyday, and when abroad in countries which might be risky, I wear my watch as described so it is less obvious and visible.
No, you claim I flaunt my wristwatch..
I didn’t.
What I did say was it probably wouldn’t matter if you did because muggers wouldn’t even know it was a Rolex because of it’s vintage.
I’m trying to keep this polite Barry but you’ve already lapsed into mild rudeness which really wasn’t necessary.

I have a couple of pocket watches, but they are were not overly expensive, the rose gold chain its attached to was much more expensive, even though my wrist watch is usually a Tag and nowhere near the price of a Rolex, I am fairly careful about where it would on show
Had more once but still got about 10 I guess.mostly fairly old. 19th c for most or in early 20th. I was a bit of a collector of American ones but not silly money ones. Oldest ones are 1880 ish. Surprising that they still work, some very well.
But I don't wear them now as I don't wear suits anymore sadly.

As I wear a 3 piece suit fairly regularly , I always like to wear my pocket watch and chain.
Back to the matter in hand, this piece of crap cost nothing, the eBay seller I bought it off for a fiver gave me a refund when I complained about one of the hour markers coming loose but didn’t want the watch back. Just wasted a new battery on it.

Ah, good idea, post a pic please, I like old Rolex.
Scroll back to near the start of this thread where I have posted a photo.
To provide you with maximum information to have a snigger - I was given the watch by my parents 37 years ago, and it has been worn 24/7 ever since. It is worn in bed and in the shower.
The only time it is not worn is when I wear a dinner jacket, and when it is being serviced.
Oh - and the only other time is when engaged in a bedroom activity not connected with sleep.

No, it's the shape of the case and strap lugs, the colour of the case and of the dial and numbering the even hours.
What I don't really like is the semicircular window showing the mechanism.

How many watches have you got? I've got about 5, and a Squale is one of them, nice watches, keep real good time, a definite no bullshit dive watch, but like you I'm not that active, just walk doggo along the beach most days. This summer I might take it in the water, though probably won't go 200 metres down, haha, may be 2 metres, actually, I'll probably just stay on top.

I've a snide Omega Seamaster round here somewhere, got '007' on the face so it must be a good 'un, Bought in Turkey nearly 20 years ago for about £20. When I last saw it a couple of years ago it still worked, but I couldn't get it round my wrist due to the metal strap shrinking.
I also have a Mickey Mouse watch bought for me a few years ago, but it's a kiddies' watch and won't accept an adult strap. And Anita bought me a 'Fitbit' type watch last Christmas, that's still in its box.
That's 3 watches in total - can I call that a collection?
Has anyone come across these 'Christopher Ward' watches advertised on TV? Quite like the look of them.

Are the CW watches on the shopping channel? [emoji23]
I'd avoid watches that are advertised on TV. If they pay to be in a James Bond film though they must be good.
I bought a Christopher Ward Malvern C5 auto in 2007, very simple face which I really liked. I only wore it about 2 days a year and as my son isn't interested in wearing a watch I sold it on ebay last year - got more for it than I paid. I thought it was really nice and looked good quality to me. However I know nothing about watches. I've not seen them advertised on tv. When I bought the C5 I think the company was new and offering very good cashback on quidco.
The Christopher Ward C5 595 is a very elegant watch to have. Well done.
mine was a C5 Malvern mk 1, it looked like this

Still an elegant looking watch. :)

Only good if worn by Sean Connery as Bond and in a decade that mattered.
That Christopher Ward is very tasteful.
How do metal straps shrink??
It's not the links that shrink, it's usually the sprung-loaded pins that fit into the lugs of the watch case that bend through use.
It happened to the strap on my watch, but I had worn it near constantly for 40 years. I thought the pin could be easily replaced, but no - not only did the manufacturer insist on servicing the watch, I had to have a new bracelet; all at considerable expense (a few hundred pounds!).

Around the 250 mark at the moment (yes, I know, I need help) but a lot of them are forty odd quid Ali Express specials.

Oh lovely, I almost got that model, but really wanted a sub mariner type dive watch, but that's a nice retro look, like the offset crown and bezel, is it ceramic?

They don't , But wrists do expand.

No, just a printed bezel.

Are the CW watches on the shopping channel? [emoji23]
I'd avoid watches that are advertised on TV. If they pay to be in a James Bond film though they must be good.
No it was on regular prime time TV. Prices seem to range from about £600 to about £2,000.

From Wikipedia-
Timex Group B.V., or Timex Group, is an American - Dutch holding company headquartered in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands and Middlebury, Connecticut.[citation needed] It is the corporate parent of several global watchmaking companies including Timex Group USA, Inc.,[1] TMX Philippines, Inc., and Timex Group India Ltd.
Watches are made in the Philippines, Hong Kong, China, France, India and Switzerland.
In my experience there are wide variations in the quality of pieces, I’ve just sent one back as quite frankly it was just a piece of plastic shite selling for over £100!
The autos seem ok though.
My very first watch was a Timex. It was made in Scotland around 1958.

Cheers Struth,
I really hope that i can get it sorted.
This was my everyday watch until recently - I thought battery needed replacement, but apparently it needs movement looking at which will cost almost as much as the watch cost

both nice. i wouldnt repair tissot unless its dear to you.
The Tissot was a previous birthday present from wife, so it has some sentimental value but i have no intention of throwing good money after bad - mechanical watches for me from now on.
The Tissot replaced a Le Cheminant wind up which i have mislaid. I spent most of yesterday looking for the Le Cheminant to no avail. I am sure it is in the house somewhere and will turn up when least expected.
Your Tissot is a handsome looking watch. I would at least get a quote for its repair.
Your Tissot is a handsome looking watch. I would at least get a quote for its repair.
Thanks Barry I do love it: it’s just that repair quote from local dealer where watch was bought (involved sending it back to Tissot) was over £250 - had better quote from fixmywatch but some reviews were rather worrying.
I can’t just junk it, I would be willing to spend about £100 but any more seems silly - will keep on looking.
Just took in pocket watch for asssessment of service cost, so will see how that goes (and carry on looking for my Le Cheminant :))
EDIT - thanks again @Barry, just checked on Tissot and they offer full diagnostic/repair starting at £105 so hopefully it will be worthwhile after all. Seems my local dealer may be a little greedy.

Sorry, this watch is only a little better looking. The dial looks 'radioactive' similar to the luminous watches of the last century, though it does in some way match the plastic strap.
If you want to wear a diver's watch, wear one of your Rolex watches - it's your birthday after all. :)

Don’t have much experience of winders other than the one I got as a gift, it’s a ‘Dulwich’ with 3 slots and seems to do its job well enough. I hear good things about’Wolf’ winders to but don’t think they come cheap.

Not bad. What do you call watches that do not have the name of the manufacturer on the watch face?
Think I would prefer the second hand to be straight; though you could always pretend the watch was a Rolex 'Milgauss'.
Happy bunny - watch back from Tissot today, about £120 for repair (also came with new face, hands, expanding strap bars).
Surprised how much I had missed it and how good it feels to have it back on :)

From Wikipedia -
Montres Tudor SA, or simply Tudor, is a Swiss watchmaker based in Geneva, Switzerland. Registered in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex, the brand remains a sister company to Rolex; both companies are owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation.
And yes, they originally used off the shelf movements in Rolex cases.
Been after one of these ‘1926’ models for a while, took a chance buying this two year old example off eBay but, luckily, it’s immaculate.

Just got my Versace back from the repairer a couple of weeks ago. Had it about 18 years but not worn in the past couple as the crown undid itself and got lost. Took it back to the jeweller I bought it from and they made me a new crown. I was expecting quite a hefty bill but they only charged me 20 quid! Doesn’t have the logo like the original, but at least I can wear it again now.

Lorus are actually made by Seiko but sell for roughly a third of the equivalent Seiko model, they're fitted with an older movement but still a very good watch for the money.

Just been watching 'Live & Let Die', noticed Bond is wearing the Pulsar P2 which I've got a copy of. Although his is in silver.
Thanks chaps, I must say some of the classic Sekondas are very nice and so cheap - this is a now discontinued model “1664” but picked one up NOS from an Amazon trader for just over 50 quid - can’t complain at that price!

Yes :)
One was a pressie from a brother, he bought it in Islamabad.
The other I bought on a day trip to Tijuana. You can't go to TJ and not buy a fake Rolex. I think it's the law.
I think my fake Rolex came from Malta 30 years ago. Surprisingly, it still works and never had a service!

The cost of a Rolex service is just stupid. I've owned my Rolex 20 years and still going strong, still keeps perfect time.
I agree - the last time I had mine serviced the cost was considerably more than what my parents paid for it.
It was given to me fifty years ago. I used to have it serviced every ten years or so, but will now only send it off to Rolex should it need a repair (that would include a service which Rolex insist on doing as a matter of course!)
However it does keep perfect time, probably because it's rarely off my wrist.
Topical ,yesterday my daughter bought me a 'Rolex Submariner' from the charity shop she manages .
They were chucking this one in the scrap because the bezel ring had come off and snapped in half , the thing wasnt working and the winder was funny as .
A few minutes with Gorilla glue , some Sellotape and some carefully placed tippex in the dot where the jewel was lost , (The ring had snapped through the hole where it existed ) reset the time eventually as the winder was acting up at first , a quick gentle shake and off it went ,and I have proudly been wearing it for work today .
I appreciate you will all gag at this rough barsteward , but I hate waste !!! Its an ok watch for nought , but a donation I will give when shes back at work there !!
I would upload a picture but its always a pita on here
As I understand it, if it's a real one it's worth quite a bit of money in any state. Maybe Roy can confirm or deny?

The cost of a Rolex service is just stupid. I've owned my Rolex 20 years and still going strong, still keeps perfect time.
Had my 1970 Submariner serviced last year to give to my Son, total cost plus a free evaluation was £2200.
Hadn't thought about it previously but he now has the cost of insuring the bloody thing.
Rolex have long had veblen status, which means people expect them to be expensive, including the servicing.
Obviously one expects a mechanical watch to be expensive to make, especially one that keeps time accurate enough to be accorded chronometer status, but in the last ten years or so prices charged by Rolex have become absurd.
The trouble is that anyone with enough money: rock stars; TV personalities; professional sports players, etc. now automatically think of Rolex when choosing a watch.
As I understand it, if it's a real one it's worth quite a bit of money in any state. Maybe Roy can confirm or deny?
Most models fetch more than retail second hand because they’re very difficult to buy new but things aren’t as crazy as they were when a £5k Oyster perpetual was fetching £30k because it was Tiffany blue.
