View Full Version : Anyone keen on watches?
Do you really need a watch to tell you which the day of the week it is?
At last - something with a bit of style and elegance. :)

Why not? Don't let my comments put you off - I do like some of your watches, but not all of them.

Course not, but it looks very cool. :)

You are, of course, entitled to your opinions Barry but it's the rather superior, acerbic, patronising way you express them that irks me.
It's occurred a few times on this thread & elsewhere. I appreciate you seem to have a rather direct, no nonsense approach to things but this does come across as plain rudeness on occasions when this is probably not what you intend.

I do like the look of a square watch, Only ever owned one, a Pulsar. Orient do a good job with these.

Yes, I can come across as being blunt but I mean no offense. Apologies if I 'rained on your parade'.

Appreciated Barry & apology accepted.
That Orient watch is very nice, stunning design and build looks good.
Roy,
What's the dimensions of the square Orient' s case?
Does it wear similar to the Monaco on the wrist, or is it more dress watch proportions?
Thanks.
Not a great deal in it, Orient’s a touch narrower.

Might pick an Orient up if I can find one.
I like the Monaco.
& that’s the one I kept on in the end

My brother came for a visit yesterday and bought a few old family things to put with all the other items I keep safe. One thing was our grandfather's wristwatch. It's very bruised and battered and not running. My brother did take it to his watch expert to see if it could be resurrected but he said it's beyond repair and some parts would have to be hand made plus the dial might not be able to be cleaned. So it will remain a piece of family history. It's probably around 100 years old and been in at least one war. Not sure it's in it's original box but it certainly has lived in it a long time.
I really like this thread and very much admire the watches, for me the plainer the better but that's just me lol. I guess what I'm trying to say is this beaten up old relic of a watch means more to me than all the posh ones I've ever had. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190728/540e6920857d1f8986d5b5852aadc166.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190728/8e07e7a8ddd46c1a17ca8c06d41003c1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190728/f6712f120be2dc8928ce37af365ef906.jpg

I can understand that completely, my dad owned a particularly ordinary but perfectly good Jeep watch, probably no more than £40-50. But it's the first thing I'd save out of everything I own. My mum and I were with dad when he passed away, I took it off his wrist and gave it to my mum, she held it for a moment and gave it back to me and told me dad would want me to have it. I can't even begin to express how much I care about that watch.
Also got Dad’s Rotary (he barely wore this much preferring his old automatic)

A bit small & subtle for my taste Barry but I’ve recently put a new battery in it just to keep it going.
At the other end of the spectrum (almost literally!) this arrived from the US today.

Now to lower the tone. Four Budweiser branded promotional quartz watches I bought at a boot sale about twenty years ago, they cost me ten quid for the four! The one far right died from leaking battery contamination. These keep very good time, the three to the left had new batteries a month or two back and are still as spot on as needs be. I normally used to reset them once a year, but no longer wear a watch.

It's a Brooks Bentley (no, I'd never heard of them before either). Popped up on ebay at a fair price for a nice looking watch with, what looks like, a decent automatic movement.
Yes, the Daytona's still on the radar but I've got a couple of holidays to pay for so I'll have to wait till my finances recover a little first. I'm only a poor old pensioner you know!

Fairly new, just got around to resizing the bracelet. It falls somewhere between the pro diver & grand diver ranges, only 200m water resistant but in a 47mm case. Juries out on it really, might just keep it as part of the Invicta collection?
I’m tempted to build myself a custom Seiko.

Well, you have a pretty serious Invicta collection, it definitely deserves a place in it.

Thats gorgeous.
The green and gold play well together and really like the shape of the indices.
Every time I look at this thread it costs me money!
Always been taken by the idea of the historical aspect of watches, and currently the idea of the watch of WW2 Italian frogmen, (Panerei) with my car (and coffee maker!) I have an Italian thing going on atm.
Thinking one of those may be my next watch purchase.
Orient make some nice pieces, this one’s just caught my eye but I’m on a self imposed budget for the next couple of months, holiday coming up.

Don't worry Roy I've only just paired my phone to the car...
Someone else paired my last phone (or was that 2 phones ago?) but as Renault in their wisdom didn't bother moving the speaker for the UK's right hand drive version of their cars you just got this distant disembodied voice from the passenger footwell, why I haven't bothered pursuing it.

It's clockwork ... and by the look of it pretty much unused since it was bought from H Samuels in Hull in 1984 ...

When I was still employed and timekeeping was very important for my job I would think nothing of spending up to £15 at Argos for a watch but as I was on holiday I thought I'd treat myself and pushed the boat out at £20.
Excellent for when I'm mucking out the gutters or lancing the cat's boil

Watches, like all jewellery are subject to fashion. The trend towards large dial size is one such fashion whim, and has been going on now for a few years. With diver's watches and watches with multiple timing functions, a large dial size makes sense to ease of visibility.
For an 'ordinary watch', one that simply shows the time (and perhaps the date) a smaller dial size is perfectly acceptable and IMO preferable. My Rolex, which does no more than display the time, is 37mm in diameter including the winder crown.
Roy started a watch thread on another forum which wetted my appetite, and only having a cheapie watch thought I'd treat myself. After much browsing the net and then yesterday going into town I've plumped for this one. https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=tissot+t1014101104100&id=83A025A64B1ADA68314D99A24BDE3D3EC9FFC279&FORM=IQFRBA

I'd still rather have an automatic at that sort of money. Two years time you might have to weigh out for a new battery & I'm guessing for a Tissot that won't be the watch man in Debenhams for a tenner. You could argue that autos need servicing periodically but I've not had one done yet (although I have a Panerai that definitely needs regulating). I've still got the Citizen auto I got for my 18th birthday & that's still going strong 42 years later.
If you go to Timpsons for the battery replacement, then there is an option to buy a card allowing unlimited future battery changes. A bit steep up-front (something like £40), but considering a single replacement will be ~ £10, worth it IMO.
I think the 'higher end' quartz watches usually need to be sent away to the manufacturer for the battery to be replaced as it will also need to have the gasket replaced to maintain water resistance? I stand to be corrected as I only have 'cheapo' battery watches & I replace the batteries in them myself.
Timpson will do it but not on the spot.
I like Tissot watches, especially the vintage ones pre Swatch ownership, still this is one of my favourites a 516, and an older Seastar picked up on eBay for £80. The gold Seastar was a bit more though

Yes, that's the one. I will most likely just go to the Timpson's man for a battery replacement, I won't be doing any deep sea diving in it, :) only wearing when I go out.

Nice!
Here's one some may find interesting; a Bulova Accutron Tuning Fork watch. Pre-digital it requires a 1.35 battery or 3v to 1.35v converter module to run. It makes a high pitched buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz when running that you (well me!) can only hear with it pressed against my ear. The hands are set by the wheel on the back of the watch, it's an 'M6' so dates from 1966...

It makes a high pitched buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz when running that you (well me!) can only hear with it pressed against my ear. The hands are set by the wheel on the back of the watch, it's an 'M6' so dates from 1966...

I have a Bulova watch, but mine uses a quartz mechanism. It has a square case, gold dial and a black patent leather strap, though the hands are set with the usual wheel on the right hand side of the case. I wear it with my dinner jacket, on those occasions that warrant it.

Very nice - simple and elegant.
Thanks Barry...just what I was after..a simple no nonsense dress watch...that pic i put up was from my pals mobile phone...I've spent a couple of hours on it...had it to bits for a clean up...a new strap and polished out the Plexi Glass...this is how it actually looks....better than i expected

Although I have a couple of half decent watches I've always fancied something of real quality. The problem I have is that I have huge wrists, I mean HUGE. When I sprained my wrist I had to use a brace meant for a woman's ankle. I've never found a leather strap long enough and it gets difficult have a bracelet extended that much. Perhaps I should investigate a quality pocket watch lol.

But always preferred pockets tbh anyway. More style and an excuse to wear a waistcoat
. I've a few leather and swede ones deliberately bought too small so they don't get closed. Look good in a casual way with a shirt
Without actually taking a photo of my Bulova (for the simple reason I've forgotten how to put photos up ), the nearest image I can find for my watch is this:
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRKDsCk9BI_Mc25h-9hB7cbU6gHZ4ErZwvuT9h4weArPuGMCIR-,
save mine has a gold case and dial, and the tuning fork motif is on the back of the watch along with the serial number. Apart from that, the shape, strap, hands and batons are identical.

another example of simple elegance...all these extra dials and big day date boxes just makes it hard to see the time....
Not long got this. A quite understated gold coloured watch.

It's hard to pull off 'gold' when it isn't 'gold' but I think this one does it rather well.
Since Roy has led me astray with his watch threads :) and I purchased a Tissot, I have purchased one more which was on my ebay watch list for a bargain price of £29 inc. post.

Anyone want to buy my Bulova Sea King chrono?
It’s one of the most accurate watches going, manufacturers claim +/-15 seconds a year!
It has a sweep second flyback hand, and the 262khz technology makes the sub dial second counter have a double tick movement, so theoretically breaking down each second counted into 2 movements.
Why do I want to sell it?
The wife hates it and won’t be seen out with me if I wear it!
SRP was around £415.

They're phenomenal movements, even in the cheaper 5s like this one.
Was bidding on a watch with 34 jewels on ebay but just missed out. It was quite an ugly watch anyway but I would have liked to have it for the curiosity value.

When it comes to diver's or explorer's watches, those by Rolex are IMO the most stylish.
My next Rolex purchase was going to be a Daytona but now I’ve seen how small they are the Submariner is back in the frame - probably just a simple black faced version on a steel bracelet.

Have fancied a Rolex Submariner for some time but they're in short supply. I considered paying over retail for a pre owned example but that never sat well with me.
Anyway I'm now on 2 waiting lists, 1 AD said it would be about a year's wait for the no date version I want, the other wouldn't commit to a waiting time but said I would get preferential treatment as I purchased my Explorer II there.

There is just something about them..a superior finish watch, built like a tank, but as you say, are they worth that sort of Money. I'm Sceptical...Saying that, a lottery win would have be buying a few...:mental:

One of my old pockets, from 19th century cost $39 for movement in the day. which was a fair amount then I believe. Guess if you put a nice gold case on it would be over $100 then. gold wasnt as high as now of course. Just think pockets are better value.

I had it in my mind that the Sub date was quite a bit more expensive than the Explorer 11, seems there is only £300 difference.
That of course when you can get hold of them without paying a premium.

It’s quartz driven, but the timing hand sweeps like a non quartz, and thanks to Bulova ‘s 262khz movement, the seconds hand makes 2 movements per second

Arrived yesterday (I sold one of my Seikos a week or so ago). It came on a really odd plaited rope strap which I took off & put on this black fabric strap (which is actually the wrong size, it's a 24mm & this watch takes a 22mm). I've ordered a nice navy blue leather strap which should suit it well.

Settled on just 7 in the end including this old favourite

I like that one, but ideally would prefer a smaller diameter dial (yes I know large dials are fashionable at the moment). Perfect example of simplicity and elegance. :)

Timeless elegance for a tenner at Argos (I bought a black one to)
Barry, Roy tipped me the nod on watches from Amazon, some nice simple designs here and cheap too. https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=mens+watches+black&crid=2MCQCMWTNWNLB&sprefix=mens+watches%2Caps%2C148&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_9_12

The time on this Genuine Rolex Sub., reminds me of a joke...I'd bought one off the market from a guy called Derek....and later that night my pal was round for a few bevvies...I was showing him the new purchase and bragging how good a time keepr it was, when the 9.00 news came on the tv..I looked at the watch with my pal..and he laughed out loud as it read 8.45...I immediately grabbed my son by the ear and shouted, have you been mucking about with the telly again, you little bugger....Oof Oof Oof....I'll get my coat....

That's a very nice watch Barry. I also looked at Skagen, I like the very simple face watches. It was Roy who started me of looking for a new watch, thinking I would spend in the region of £100, ended up more than double. Looks like I might have done the same to you, at least I can blame Roy.

Just a mere 47mm Grant (+ crown) (and I still struggle to see the date..)
Glasses are the answer Roy. Nice looking watch, although that would be too big for me. Never heard of Gigandet watches before.

yup more of a pocketwatch size. they did at one time put pockets onto wriststraps as they had lots and folk wanted wrists.. probably around end of ww1
