A couple of years ago I took my Mercedes key fob to Timpsons for a new battery fitted - guy there told me fitting it was a job for Mercedes Benz, and would likely cost about £70. Anita decided we're not havin' that, and after spending about 4 quid on a battery from Amazon, and a three-minute You Tube tutorial, she had it sorted.
She's definitely the brains of this outfit. I'm just the eye candy :)
I am considering a solar watch, and this one I can get at a good price, and it ticks most boxes for me looks-wise. Though I'm not sure about the super-thin hands.

I paid £3 last time, from the watch bloke down the market. Two years ago roughly.
He also adjusted the strap on my Armitron, wouldn't accept any payment for that.
You do have to put up with him criticising your choice of watch though. My mate reckons that's the only reason he has the stall.
Strong recommend for one of these watch repair kits,
Timpson quoted £20 to remove 2 links from a watch bracelet, got the kit for £17 and did it myself.

G Shocks are probably not a good example, it can be a pain to change the battery and they all seem different, Timpsons probably quote £66 to cover all eventualities and/or put you off taking your G Shock to them.

Yeah, maybe he makes enough for the overheads but not much else. 3 quid for a battery fitted does sound cheap, but he probably gets them in bulk for a quid each or something.

Bit late with this post James. Your timekeeping is shocking :ner:
I now have four watches - a snide Omega Seamaster (a Turkish 'genuine fake' that no longer works), a Mickey Mouse watch (meant for a kid and strap is too small for me), a Seiko solar watch that Anita got me last week, and a smart watch she got me a couple of Christmases ago (which I will get round to wearing one day). Trouble is the watch and the charger are in different parts of the house, so sometimes I find the watch in a drawer and think "Ooh, I really should look for the charger for that", and sometimes I find the charger and think "Ooh I really should look for the watch for that :doh: I'm sure when they eventually come together it'll be very nice.
Quite an impressive collection I'm sure you'll agree.

Yes it's the one I pictured recently :)
We went to Bury last week, which was the nearest branch of F. Hinds, which advertised the watch at £154, the cheapest I found. But the bloke in the shop informed us "We've lost Seiko", by which I assumed they meant they no longer sell them, rather than they've put them down somewhere and can't remember where. Oh well, there was a H. Samuel close by, but the same watch was priced at £220.
We went in anyway to have a proper look. I think the salesman was determined not to lose a sale, and told us they'll match any genuine price elsewhere. No problem, Anita showed him F. Hinds' website on her phone, and so we got it at that lower price. Result! Makes me wonder how much mark up they have on these things.
Look forward to seeing some "guess where I am" pics on your other thread Roy, unless you've already told us elsewhere.

Latest and probably last edition to my collection, I'm tapping out at 5. It's great that so many watch makers are reissuing old models now, saves buying poor performing scratched up used examples on Ebay.

Well I'm more than happy with the accuracy of my Seiko solar watch - when I set the time on Christmas day I got it to within 3 seconds before I got bored and decided it was near enough, Now nine days later it's still 3 seconds slow :)
But in doing this I find that the time displayed on my laptop is slightly different to that on Sky TV which is slightly different to my smartphone. So who knows what time it is really?
Time is relative, it is not common. As Einstein would say "I measure time by my watch, you measure time with your watch".
However to address your point regarding synchronicity of the time displayed on your phone, laptop etc., I have noticed that if I'm using my phone or PC whilst listening to the radio, the time changes precisely with the BBC 'pips' or the 'bongs' of Big Ben.

I would like to trust the BBC 'pips', but just to complicate things further BBC radio arrives at my home at slightly different times on Sky TV my mobile phone and DAB radio. And DAB I've found to be a good ten to fifteen seconds behind FM. Looking at Speaking clock.com I see that the time on my mobile is roughly two seconds fast.

Over the coming days I will investigate further the differences between my Sky box, Alexa, FM radio (in the van) and my DAB job site radio. But when Anita is elsewhere as she would readily find me something else to occupy my time.

I didn't change it last year either. Just mentally adding an hour is easier. Although in my case I have to add 57 minutes.
Plus even if I did change it I've got to change it back again in 11 weeks time. Hardly seems worth it.

I've always struggled with it a bit. Before phone alarms I'd forget to switch off the alarm Friday night and be halfway out the door before realising it was Saturday.
I've also gone into work when I've had the day off, thinking it was still the day before. That got a few laughs, especially as I then had a 7 mile walk home.

Yep that's a problem. When I'm not working I gradually go from 0630 start and 2230 bed to 0930 start and 0200 bed. That seems to be my natural condition.
But these days I need at least two weeks off to get to 'feral' state and I never take that much time off.

It's only been a thing this past year or so, since retiring. Before that I had enough 'landmarks' in the week to keep me aware: Monday this job in Blackpool, Tuesday and Wed something else etc, and constantly referring to my diary. Friday was a day to look forward to, Saturday was errands day followed usually by visiting friends and Sunday was chilling.
Point is that without things that need to go in the diary it's a bit like driving down a motorway with no junctions, services or scenery - I really need the route to be populated with identifiable landmarks to know where I am.

I did similar once, went to work on a Bank Holiday Monday. but I've done worse, like driving to the shops, then walking back and getting home and wondering where the car has gone.

I understand that. Whilst, as I have said, I always know what day of the week it is, I don't necessarily know what I have to do that day.
Apart from obvious things like shopping, I have to write down reminders like appointments, important phone calls etc. in my diary. Some things I can store on the calendar of my mobile phone, but my diary is becoming increasingly important and vital for my day to day activities.

I rely on apps to tell me when to take my meds and what I should be doing on any given day (relies on me updating the apps of course). Most important is when I’m off on my travels and my better half lets me know when to dust off the passport and pack me smalls.

I like that one Roy. It's a little unusual in having the digits at 10 minute separations on the dial (apart from "6"). I also like the separate seconds dial).

Same, spends most of its life in the safe. I do wear my Explorer 2 more as it’s less obviously a Rolex.
What is the point of having a watch spending most of its time in a safe? I have worn my Rolex twenty four hours a day for the last fifty-odd years. The only time it is not worn is when I wear a dinner jacket, and then wear a dress watch (a square-faced Bulova) to go with it.
Think we’ve had this conversation before.
I’d always wanted a Sub and when I got the opportunity I bought one but it’s a sad indictment on the world today that it’s just not safe to wear it freely.
It gets dusted off for special occasions when there’s zero or little threat involved but I wouldn’t wear it to, say, pop down the shops. (I have, after all, a few other watches to choose from!).
I never purchased it as an investment piece but it’s become that, although I’d never sell it. It’ll be inherited by one of my partners grandsons who can decide if he wants to use it as a daily beater.
Above all I’ve had the pride of ownership of a very special timepiece.

As I said I have worn my watch everyday for the last fifty-odd years. I even wear it in bed because it keeps better time that way.
It has been all over the world with me, suffering temperature extremes of -20 to +40C and still performed flawlessly. When I'm in foreign countries where the standard of living is considerably lower than in the UK, I take care not to flaunt it, the same as would do with my cameras.
On only one occasion, when wandering around the back streets and alleys of Sana in Yemen, did I think it prudent to wear it 'American style'.
The thought of not wearing it to "pop down to shops" simply wouldn't enter my mind.
It was given to me by my parents and I feel it would be an insult to their memory not to wear it.

The ‘problem’ with the Sub is it shouts ‘I’m a Rolex’ to all and sundry and you have to beware of them ‘sundries’.

Problem is Roy that you don't look rough enough. If I were to wear a Rolex, folk would look at the watch, look at me, then assume it'll be a fake :)

I saved long and hard to buy my Submariner which cost probably 6 months wages back in 1970. I love/loved that watch and wore it every day until I gave it away but at least now my Son can get the enjoyment of wearing it, trouble is people get mugged every day to steal a Rolex. Of course some areas of the country are worse for this than others but he does extensive travelling in and around London and that isn't safe at all.

Problem is Roy that you don't look rough enough. If I were to wear a Rolex, folk would look at the watch, look at me, then assume it'll be a fake :)
Maybe that's how I got away with it - although all my Rolexes are fakes and none of them work anymore.

Something very cool about one on the original jubilee Roy.
Some folks swap it out, but its part of its charm.

That model looks similar to my Rolex, though the bracelet is different as are the details of the dial.
My watch was given to me by my parents over fifty years ago, and the exact model is no longer made.
Roy may have more to say, but I am not sure if I would choose a Rolex today. They have acquired an absurd reputation, veblen status, and I have to say a rather 'easy' choice for a luxury wristwatch for those with enough money. Certainly they can be regarded as an investment, but IMO a watch is to be used everyday. Mine has only left my wrist for a few days since it was given to me, and that was for a couple of hugely expensive services by Rolex.
However, having said all that, I would still choose the Rolex shown over the Breitling, despite the chronometer status of the latter.
Never liked Breitlings, no particular reason.
At 31mm that Rolex is tiny and a bit ancient for my taste (nearly as old as me!).
Think I’ve amply covered my thoughts on Rolex ownership in other posts but basically I like having them even if I can’t wear them that often. That being said I’m going to start wearing the explorer 2 more often, it’s not a model people recognise.

How is watch size measured? Is it the diameter of the bezel, or is it the diameter of the watch glass?

Ah, so in that case my Rolex is 34.5mm, still small for your taste, but there again I find the current fashion for large watches too 'showy' and not for me.

Last few I’ve bought have been 38-40mm and I’ve moved on most of my 42+ pieces, fashion driven to an extent but the bigger ones were cumbersome to wear and demanded an almost exact strap/bracelet fit to stop them flapping about.

I've only taken one watch with me when travelling (to nearly 80 countries), and that has been my fifty year old Rolex.
Only on one occasion have I taken 2 watches. That was on a visit to north India in 2000, where I would attend a gala dinner to properly celebrate the dawn of the 21st century. Since I would be wearing a dinner jacket, wearing a gold square-faced Bulova with a black leather strap seemed appropriate.
Next holiday I’m taking an iceland carrier full of Casios [emoji6]

Having signed the Official Secrets Act, I'm not allowed to talk about it. But I will say the DJ had to be made to measure, so my Walther PPK automatic wouldn't form an unsightly bulge.
Seriously though, I do wear one when celebrating notable birthdays and dining in good restaurants, where wearing a DJ is not out of place. I used to attend musical soirées in London, again where wearing a DJ was expected.
Actually I have two DJs: a lightweight one for Summer, and a second made from heavier material for the colder months.

From normal distances it does shout "I'm an Omega!" Except that it isn't :doh: It cost me about £30 in Turkey. The point I'm trying to make is that watch ownership is surely very much a personal thing, it's pride of ownership, emotional connection, and how it makes the wearer feel, rather than what other folk think of it. Sorry Roy :o You do have a huge collection, and the designs are many and varied. So there's no chance that everyone will like every watch you own. And you know what Barry's like, he tells it like he sees it, and nothing personal...

From normal distances it does shout "I'm an Omega!" Except that it isn't :doh: It cost me about £30 in Turkey. The point I'm trying to make is that watch ownership is surely very much a personal thing, it's pride of ownership, emotional connection, and how it makes the wearer feel, rather than what other folk think of it. Sorry Roy :o You do have a huge collection, and the designs are many and varied. So there's no chance that everyone will like every watch you own. And you know what Barry's like, he tells it like he sees it, and nothing personal...

Think my original point got somewhat muddied.
A concise version would be my Rolex's would be more identifiable and attractive to thieves than Barry's, which is why I'm reluctant to wear them in certain places. The end.
As far as Barry 'telling it like it is' I just feel sometimes he's a little terse and tell him so, there's certainly no animosity involved.
People do notice watches, clothes, haircuts all that sort of stuff.
I used to go in the bank a lot to cash cheques as I didn't have an ATM card for years. Go in on day off scruffy and in trainers compared to on my lunch hour from work in suit and tie with mirror-polished shoes.
I was never addressed as 'Sir' wearing the scruffs. The difference was quite alarming.
I got a fake Rolex in TJ and wore it to work for a few months until it died. One day someone asks 'What's that watch you're wearing?'. A woman at the back of the room who I never had anything to do with immediately pipes up 'It's a Rolex.' She'd clocked it - if you'll excuse the pun.
What you look like massively affects your interaction with others - not family and friends but people who don't know you. Can be critical.
Worked with this posh woman for a bit she was always immaculately turned out. On dress down day I would always wear my usual scruffy sportswear. One time she says to me 'You always dress like you're poor why don't you wear decent clothes?'
The reason is I've always lived in poor, rough neighbourhoods. Maybe not so much these days but years ago if you dressed posh you stand out and you're a target. Dress scruffy they assume you're one of them. You don't see piranhas eating each other.

I don't think it matters much these days, in fact it looks like some folks might be 'dressing down' at hifi shows. Unless it is a deliberate attempt to keep the sales blokes off their backs ;)

What bothers me about these kind of watches is that the index marks on the bezel never seem to quite line up. That's how much of a sad git I am :doh: Or maybe it's just my dodgy peepers.
Some watch bezels are designed and are intended to rotate. Maybe this is one of them.
I agree, Barry, I have had watches with a rotating bezel.

Is it not just because it's quite a deep bezel and the angle is not straight down so it looks off. If you follow the bezel up at 40 or 50 minutes it looks fine. Probably still a rotating bezel of course as all proper divers are.
