i dont eat too much green veg as its inclined to make me ill. as much as i like peas, carrots, green beans etc. not that much i can eat these days but steak is still ok. steak pie too although it sometimes pays me back:rolleyes: homemade soup has to do me
Got this off butcher on Monday .. 2slices of Scottish 'salmon cut' rear top single muscle rump cut like silverside but much tastier.
Gets it's name from it's similarity to a big fillet of salmon.
Pricy stuff but I love it as a braised steak with gravy.
Currently reducing the juices I cooked it in.

You do go for the exotic. Can't just have 'steak' from Aldi like we peasants do.
So the reduced - is that 'Au Jus' or something - juice going with the posh steak. Mash with that ?
Will sit in juices overnight now.
Sneaked a little bit and ...boy it's fantastic.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231220/701cb028b918608d8257e4561d7ad96a.jpg

A gentle simmer takes off water and leaves a thicker tastier stock that needs very little thickening. I added a dollop of BBQ sauce I get and keep in fridge.
Ps nowt wrong with Aldi Lidl steaks but I prefer butchers meat if I can get it. When not I get it from Morrisons or Tesco delivered with groceries

Pork and chicken are both cheaper than beef, when you're catering for 11 it's more economical than giving everyone beef (& the youngsters don't like beef anyway).
And by the way I don't understand why your comment was directed with such a venemous tone?
There was really no need and I don't appreciate it.

Bread pudding, bread and butter pudding, and all milk puddings are absolute anathema to my tastes. :(
It has been beef for Christmas ever since I was child - I loath turkey; it's utterly tasteless, and other fowl such as goose, partridge, chicken, pheasant and quail are equally unappetising to me.
Sadly I'm forced to eat fillet again tonight [emoji12]
Had 2, both needing eaten by 31 Dec.

Aldi mushy peas are very good.
Peas yes, but mushy or marrowfat? I'm not so sure.

Normally just get Bachelors, but we have an Aldi nearby, so I'll give them a go :)
Nice that they may form a healthy part of a balanced diet, though if the headlines read "Avoid mushy peas, they're radioactive!" I'd still probably eat them.

Looks unctuous. Is that a word ?
Have you tried the Aldi Mac n cheese ? It's for two but I can just about manage it on my own. Very nice with plenty of cheese and with some bacon on top.
Unctuous - "oily or greasy"; so not a particularly flattering description.
But macaroni cheese with either added bacon or tuna fish is lovely, though not a dish I make often.

:) I know, I'm so predictable, but we like what we like... and anyway if I were to break with tradition Anita would be worried. She worries about me anyway. I should get a bottle of Tizer with it to complete the set, but it just doesn't taste the way it used to.
Probably a Catholic tradition to have fish on Fridays, and maybe also 'butter pies' at lunchtime instead of say, steak pies or meat & potato, but butter pies give me heartburn and I'm not Catholic

It just makes working outside more bearable. I need a new flask - I keep dropping and breaking them, I'm now left with one which is far too big, and doesn't keep the soup hot.
Why don't you get a stainless steel vacuum flask. They're not that expensive and unlike glass types are unbreakable.

Goodness, you must have been pretty heavy handed with them. Did you screw the top on too tightly, or did they cracked through dropping them on a very hard surface?
Goodness, you must have been pretty heavy handed with them. Did you screw the top on too tightly, or did they cracked through dropping them on a very hard surface?Yeah they do get dropped or fall off things on a site etc. around the bottom edge is the typical place they split.
Know someone who thought them indestructible and drove over his with a tranny van. [emoji23]
It exploded with coffee everywhere. He was an idiot tho
Sound like someone should make a soft cover for them to prevent damage from falling onto a hard surface.

I don't get it. If someone can just stop drinking alcohol for a whole month for no good reason, they clearly don't have a problem. And January is probably the most miserable month, so why make it worse? A week tomorrow (24th) will be the official most depressing day of the year, sounds like as good a reason as any to get pissed :)

Drinking problems can manifest themselves in many ways. One way is being able not to have a drink (possibly only by avoiding friends and situations involving alcohol) but not being able to stop once you've had 2 or 3.
I've been avoiding situations recently myself but I've had an occasional glass of Bailey's in the evening that someone gave me for Christmas. It's rather pleasant.

I should have a wet January to make up for a crappy New Year's eve.
I spent it at a mate's house, where we went to his local for a couple of beers, then back to his to see the new year in. I 'd known I wouldn't want any more beer so I'd taken along a bottle of chardonnay that had been kicking about in the fridge for a few weeks, that'll do for me :)
I did not know that Anita's thieving youngest son had drunk it all and refilled the bottle with water and put it back in the fridge, the little shitbag. The result being that I saw the new year in with a can of Pepsi Max :(

Maybe it's the most depressing day of the year as everyone's hung over?
Probably a variety of reasons.
Back end of January, folk have spent up (mostly getting paid at the end of the month), credit card bills just around the corner, Christmas a distant memory, and spring even more distant. Also the effects of dark days and long nights starting to kick in (SAD).
And the realisation that this year looks to be just as crappy as the last. Good job I have such a sunny disposition to see me through :)

I think so too, but I'm just having a tin of Heinz pea and ham soup. The soup maker we got for Christmas is still in its box.
When out at work I have soup in a flask, always cheapo items, and I break at least one flask every winter (pea ham and broken glass soup isn't as tasty as it sounds), but my mate has given me his spare flask.
Same as this:

They're not cheap, but are guaranteed a lifetime, so should see me out :) Bloody hell that pic came out big, bigger than the actual flask

That reminds me of a Geordie fellow undergraduate student I knew. He had a full bottle of Chivas Regal proudly on display. When I asked if I could have a 'nip', he said "Sure - help yourself". He could afford to be magnanimous - the bottle was filled with cold tea!

Yes there is no glass, so I'll have to try really hard to break it. With my existing cheap flask I fill it with soup at 7am, and by lunchtime the soup is barely warm. This one is supposed to keep soup/beverages hot or cold for at least 24 hours. It gets its maiden voyage tomorrow, so we'll see then.

Filled my fancypants new flask with boiling water out of the kettle at 10pm, and at 8am the water was still scalding hot. Today's soup (Scotch Broth) was as hot as you need it to be, so I'd say the flask is worth every penny I didn't pay for it :)
Downside is it's my mate's birthday in March, and now I'm gonna have to get him something decent :( Then again I did give him my old B&W DM603s which he never plays, so sod him.

There is currently a backlash against Heinz's pricing. Tesco have fallen out with them about this, and are reportedly ceasing to sell their products. Anita's off to Lidl shortly, and I've asked her to pick up some Newgate ones, which came out better than Heinz in Which? magazine's taste tests.

Heinz baked beans are popular because they contain a large amount of sugar.

Yet they didn't do that well in Which? taste test. I think brand identity has a lot to do with their popularity. It's a name everyone knows and associates with quality
I found a long time ago that I prefer Branston's beans, but Anita gets Heinz for simplicity as her dopey son won't eat any other brand. If it was up to me he could sod off and sort his own buying and cooking, preferably somewhere else.

cheers.. yeah a little better again this morning after 14hrs sleep:doh:
Glad to hear it, lazy bones :ner:
Something I've wondered about before, when someone says "God, I've slept for 12 hours solid", the reply is usually something like "Well you must have needed it", but they wouldn't say that if you'd said "I've eaten half the contents of my fridge then had a 12" pizza delivered..." which in my case is much more likely

Yes - a serious omission!

At a pinch he could have had Piccalilli, but no pickle at all..
It was going to be just a ham sandwich so had English mustard in it, Red Leicester was an afterthought. Not keen on pickle but a bit of salad might have been nice.

A couple of days ago, and feeling lazy, wanted something quick and simple:
Beans (Branston, not Heinz) on toast with a couple of poached eggs.

Needing to use up some 'left overs':
Ham omelette, penne pasta, with steamed broccoli and red pepper.

An orange for dessert, and, no doubt, some Bordeaux wine to wash it all down with.
Yesterday:
Braised steak in an onion gravy, with root vegetable (potato, sweded and carrot) mash, steamed brocolli, red pepper and a few 'suger snap' peas.

Museli with Greek yogourt for dessert, and some Le Bourg Bordeaux wine.
Tonight:
Lambs' liver and bacon in an onion gravy, with mashed potato and steamed cabbage and sweetcorn niblets.

Large naval orange for dessert, and the rest of the Le Bourg Bordeaux wine.
T-bone steak with a tomato, garlic and onion sauce. Boiled potatoes, red and yellow peppers, leeks and green beans.
Fresh mango for dessert. All washed down with a 2017 Cariñena Monte Plogar, Gran Reserva.
Sorry, no pics, but it should not be too hard to visualise.

Spanish classic spinach and chick peas, which I turned into a chicken stew. Along with a bottle of Rjoca, I only lasted 3 weeks this time, well, and one day.

Both look good. What was the wine to go with the spicy pork Roy?

Lateral Chilean Merlot (I think?) from Tesco’s, was certainly a Merlot anyway.
I only drink lager with spiecy food. Drinking fine wine with curries is a waste: all subtlety is lost by the overpowering spices.

At £4.39 a bottle it’s for quaffing rather than appreciating subtle bouquets [emoji6]
