View Full Version : OK, What's For Lunch or Tea Today?
Look fab!
Ursula whipped the pan out as well last night and made pancakes - we went with lemon and sugar then Nutella and sliced banana.
We then rounded off with the traditional annual “They were lovely - we really should have them more often” statement. Obviously we never do but the intention is always there...
Yes, I've heard she can become rather 'insistent' when you don't do as you're told!:eyebrows:;)
Cheers, they were good. Yours sound nice too, and something we've also done before. We don't have pancakes (or crepes) often, but more than just one a year, maybe three or four times, depending on if we we're entertaining.
I think you'd rather enjoy the lunch or dinner parties we have, especially when Del pulls all the stops out and really goes to town, and I'm backing her up with all the wines and cocktails!;)
Marco.
totally agree.
Yup, mate. You're paying way over the odds for the convenience, and with Italian cuisine, often also through the nose for glorified 'peasant foods', which in Italy were eaten by the poor, now having become considered as 'fashionable'...
The reason why a butter and sage sauce would've been used, back in the day, was when people couldn't afford meat! In farmhouses, they'd have made their own pasta (and butter) from scratch, and the sage would've come from their herb garden - and all for pennies!:)
Anyway, when you visit, Del says you've to let her know what your favourite foods/dishes are, and also your favourite uniform for her to serve them in:lol::D;)
Marco.

Anyway, had this for a simple lunch...
IMO, these are about the best fresh (vacuum-sealed) Tortelloni, available from a UK supermarket, in this case Lidl... Really nice quality pasta and filling, and which can handle a bit of heat (without turning all sloppy), which I find is generally the case with fresh pasta from supermarkets, even the 'poshest' stuff, usually because it's too 'wet'.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/SwVNOW.jpg
In this case served simply with a classic Tuscan fresh sage (from our garden) and butter sauce:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/JCNZ3D.jpg
Then topped with freshly-grated Parmesan:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/vlQnyR.jpg
Nice and light, but tasty! Would normally serve this with a fresh Bolognaise sauce, which is lovely, but much more filling.
Marco.
that does look very nice...I love sage..I'll probably use a touch more butter when I make this...mmmmmmm
Daughter is ordering me a steak pie n chips from a chippie for my tea. [emoji39] Yum.
So had special rice pudding for my brunch earlier..
Damn good it was too. Lots of carnation and pineapple too.

Mini Chicken Enchiladas - Chicken thighs cooked with Chipotle, freshly squeezed Orange Juice, Red Pepper, Tomato, Onion, Garlic, Black Beans and Coriander (with a Scotch Bonnet thrown in for a bit of fun). Mini Corn Tortillas then rolled with the shredded chicken and basted with the remaining sauce, covered with grated cheese and baked in the oven.
Served with a Mexican Green Salad of lettuce, spring onion, avocado, coriander and a dressing of fresh lime and olive oil. Dressed with mayo and some Valentina hot sauce.

Anyway, Del made a home-made curry for tea (chicken patia) with pilau rice (infused with cardamom seeds), plus home-made chapatis...
Some of the prep (rolling out of the chapatis and making of base sauce for the curry):

She also made some spiced onions (a speciality in Indian restaurants in Scotland. The sauce comprises of tomato ketchup, mint sauce, mango chutney and chilli powder, sprinkled with fresh coriander) and raita, which was served with onion bhajis and veg samosas, from Lidl, which actually were remarkably good:

Brilliant is pressure cooking..The 33 mins in the pressure cooker is equivalent to an hour and a half +in a conventional oven...so basically like slow cooking in the oven...but in a third of the time..with pretty much the same..and sometimes a better result...nice tender pieces of meat...It's great with all the cheaper cuts too...the natural release on the pressure cooker is like letting the meat rest...Those Ninja roast/pressure cookers are superb...keep meaning to get one

It all looks fab! That sort of starter is right up my alley and years ago we found a backstreet Italian deli/restaurant in London that did the some of the most amazing antipasti we’ve ever had - and I include the stuff we’ve had in Italy amongst that!.

Lol, churz. I know exactly what you mean. The one I had yesterday though was more French than Italian - the sort of thing you'd get in France at a good Les Routiers lorry drivers cafe, as part of a 3-course meal, for about 12 Euros, including wine!;)
But yes, top notch charcuterie (or antipasti) is hard to get in the UK, especially without paying through the nose for it! A good (local) Italian deli is one of the things I miss most about living in Glasgow, as there were loads up there, serving a huge Italian community. Down here, it's a different a ball game, and there's almost nothing!
Some of the Polish stuff is ok, but not the same. No, that lot pictured was all from Lidi (from their French week), and surprisingly good quality, aside from Del's homemade salads, which were actually the tastiest things of all!:ner:
Oh, and crudités are massively popular in France, and so form the basis of their salads, and which are always coated in a delicious vinaigrette! It's not like the boring, bland shite, posing as 'salads', served here in the UK...
But I know you don't 'do veg' (or salads). However, in order to be healthy and enjoy a balanced diet, I eat plenty of it and love it (done well):)

Actually, although I like teasing you I love veg of all sorts (parsnips excepted, obviously, as they are the work of Satan) and I love carrots in particular, just not raw. If god had meant us to eat raw veg, he wouldn’t have invented the steamer! :)
Even salad-wise, I love all the things that make it up, such as tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions and the like. I just find any sort of lettuce or similar greenery extraordinarily dull - a bit of nice peppery rocket is different because it has flavour! I may be English, but I don’t do bland...

That's reminded me I have parsnips to use up. I think I'll have them roasted with chicken pie and mushy peas tonight. A bit of gravy on top won't hurt either.

Cool... You should've said all that before!:ner::D
However, for me, what makes a great salad, after the freshness and quality of the raw ingredients [and in that respect bags of 'dead' leaves from a supermarket don't qualify], is a GREAT dressing! One of my absolute and biggest foodie pet hates are 'dry'/boring and bland salads!!:rolleyes:
How anyone can think that dry lettuce leaves (of questionable quality, as is the case in the majority of occasions) are edible (or palatable), even with a couple of non-descript (often largely tasteless) slices of tomatoes and cucumber chucked in, and that that somehow qualifies as a 'salad', is utterly beyond my comprehension!:D
Marco.

indeed but no rolls.. got some square in freezer tho. pots are ok.. vegetarian too.
I love Jambon de Bayonne, only really bought it in France (on holiday) though - I don't know why but quite rare here?
Supermarkets in UK seem to mainly stock "Parma ham" or Serrano, which I enjoy a great deal but Bayonne gets my vote (fuller, sweeter flavour I think).
Where do you get yours?
Writing about it has made me think of camping in France: local fresh ficelle or baguette, decent tomatoes, a slice of Comte and cheap bottle of red (when the girls were young, they would choose the wine for the night - always bottom shelf which was in reach, and cheap :)) God, I need a holiday in France :(

yes, hp... the sausage wasnt great.. simon howie but it just wasnt right. the roll i expected to be crap and was as it wasnt made with wheat, but if sausage had been better it would have just about passed. best lorne is ayrshire followed by a good butchers. ayrshire traditional lorne usually has lamb in it as well as beef. its dearer but very nice. the rusk should also be pinhead, and enough fat shoyld be in it to cook it

I sometimes take skin off some good cumberland sausages..mash some black pudding into it and finely chopped onion, form into squares and into a butty ..with chop sauce..(when I can find it for sale)
pobably wont get good stuff in england. next time your in sotland go to a good butchers and you can get a couple of lengths. cut them and put loose leaves between and freeze.. last you for a good while. Ayrshire is best but any really good butche will have decent steak lorne. look for decen rusk and a bit of fat. the fat in first pic shows its left the sausage to cook and you get a rough finished slice.. bang on.

It's hard work getting good sausage where we are...had some superb sausage from a butcher in Alston...We had a caravan 2 mile this side of Alston near Nenthead....ate it everyday for 2 weeks...ha..

Hard to find but great in a fry up, I mix them together after frying. Best black I've tasted

Shame that, mate. But it's better being safe than sorry.
My old man still drives up to Scotland himself (266 miles from Wrexham, to the door of his brother in Erskine), and he'll be 88 in May, and sometimes he does it without a stop. But ONLY because he knows the way like the back of his hand, and just goes into 'auto pilot'.
He wouldn't have a hope of doing the same journey somewhere else, where he had to find where he was going, following road signs or a sat-nav, But yes concentration/awareness levels in older people, IMO, (next to eyesight and judgement of space) is their main failure and where things go notably downhill compared with when they were younger.
In that respect, I've always said that once passed the age of 65 you should be made to sit a test every five years, to prove your proficiency and retain your license, and at 80 and above every two years. However, in general, it's younger folks who cause most of the accidents!
Marco.

not middle class here, and niether are asda or aldi, or tesco really. Morrisons often has a slightly more middle class clientele.. not that we have a whole lot of middle classes here; most I guess go out of town to M&S or Sainsburys etc. When i was able to go out i did a lot of different places. Sainsbury is my fav shop for shopping as I can get parked close, and the bays have a space at rear for unloading my scooter, making it much safer. also the ailes are nice and wide,

oddly my driving skills are still pretty good, but that may be as i drove sort of professionally(ie, a lot in different vehicles etc) .. concentration isnt an issue for me, just that my hip gets sore quite quickly. judging distances etc are fine but i do need driving glasses as my long distance is slightly blurred now. not too bad but i need them. Never had an accident against me in nearing 50 yrs driving. Not had a parking or speeding ticket either. and i used to regularly drive over 400mls a day.

Yup, no doubt your considerable experience of driving when you were younger has helped. How are you though when other people are in the car, talking amongst each other and/or to you, while you're trying to concentrate on driving? Or maybe, you've not done that in a long time?
That's often the acid test for me, and certainly where my dad struggles (concentrating on two or three things at once), whereas when you're younger you just take all that in your stride. Reaction time, is also another thing, should having to brake suddenly be necessary, or anticipating danger and being aware enough to spot things before they happen.
Marco.

im inclined to drive alone, but someone talking is no different really than my talking books i have on. im pretty good at spotting an issue before it often happens, and thats where experience comes in. Reaction time will have slowed(it always does as you age) but if your experienced you can avoid issues by seeing them in advance etc.. also driving a little slower too especially when weather is not good, visibility, rds you dont know or heavier traffic etc.
Ive found driving faster usually gains you little in long run, except more stress. patience with other drivers is also needed more now.
Yup, defo:)

It certainly looks like it, it'd explain the price!
Had half of one sliced with salad in a pitta bread for lunch, and it was extremely delicious.
Have you tried "East end" yet - very good butcher and I think he may be a little cheaper.

Looks lovely, but was that just the starter?!
Haha, lol, no... Just an 'arty' shot to show the main ingredients, without the plate being too crowded. It's how I often prefer to do foodie pics:)
After that, the plate was filled with all sorts of fresh veg, and more lamb later! Happier now?:D

Pesto made the old fashioned way in a pestle and mortar, adds such vibrant flavour to many foods. I had it stirred into a chicken soup, but its nice added to ratatouille as well.

I don’t add to this thread because no one wants to see the Campbells chicken soup I heated for lunch but my wife has been having a go at making pizzas, her own sauces from scratch, fresh dough etc and she got these just right, they were great, slightly crisp on the bottom and soft open pored bread inside. Not your classic thin Italian style, these are deep crust, full meal jobs but with only a little cheese so not too heavy. They’re about 14” diameter.
This one is BBQ sauce, pulled pork(home cooked), sausage, onion and yellow pepper.

As others have said, Roy, that looks great and perfectly cooked, akin really to what one would expect to be served in a good steak house:)
Btw, in terms of the sentiments expressed in your opening sentence, firstly it's clear you can cook, so don't do yourself down, but secondly don't cut back on posting here because you feel that your efforts are becoming repetitive...
The answer is to vary your diet and expand your culinary repertoire, perhaps by going more outside of your comfort zone - then you'll have different delights to share with us!:D;)
Marco.

Firstly, John, it's good to see you contributing to the thread, so don't let it simply be a sporadic appearance. And secondly, similarly as I said to Roy, if you want to post more often here, and do some justice to the standards that have been set, then improve the quality of your food intake!;)
And by that I mean, in the nicest possible sense, is there any special reason why you need to have tinned soup for lunch? I'm sure you could do better:)
What about for tea - what do you usually enjoy of an evening, or for Sunday lunch? I'm sure it's worthy of a pic - or if not, make it so! That also applies to everyone here. I'm sure you're not all just junk food junkies...
Anyway, tell your good lady her efforts look great, are clearly done by someone with talent, and much appreciated!
In terms of the pizzas, if I may offer some constructive advice (as an Italian), although much will come down to personal taste, the bases look FAB, but for me there's way too much topping, especially when its 'wet', and which can have the tendency for creating a soggy base. However, that could simply be how you guys like them, which is cool. At the end of the day, all that matters is that YOU enjoy eating it:)
However, if the goal is to create something more authentic, then cut the toppings down (and cheese) by half and showcase the quality of the BASE, as in Italy THAT is primarily what good pizza is all about! Sometimes LESS is more... Anyway, enjoy and tell your good lady to keep up the good work!
Marco.
i quite like a lot of topping. i might have thouroughly enjoyed those..

Thanks Marco, and yes, we’re in agreement, there’s too much topping however in defence it was stuff that was in the fridge and needed used up and it was our main meal of the day rather than a light bite. My wife is a believer in more is more when it comes to food. Also my 17yr old son eats pizza like a herd of wildebeest eat grass so none was wasted!

Sure, as I said it comes down to personal taste, but if you want to make an authentic Italian pizza, then it's really all about the base (thin and crispy, preferably made from scratch and cooked in a wood-fired oven), then a *little* cheese (MUST be mozzarella), and a decent but not OTT coverage of fresh, good quality toppings.
But if that's not the goal, then do what you like and enjoy!:D
Marco.

i like a lot of nice rich, slightly spicy tomato sauce topping on first, as it helps with moisture and keeps topping in place.. no mushrooms tho. sweet pepper is good too. chicken and sweet pepper/onion is a good un. quite like a nice hawaiian too:ner: not very italian i know, but hey ho.. having fewer teeth than god gave me a softer base too nowadays:D

yes these were from sainsburys. the maple sauce was good and plenty of meat, although the tesco shanks are nicer and leaner. guess i could make my own sauce tho

Del and I enjoyed a nice day in Liverpool, mainly shopping but also had a lovely walk down by the Royal Albert Dock, right down the waterfront to Pier head, and the weather was beautiful. We had a drink and a snack in one of the pubs (very busy), but as it was such a lovely evening we decided to come home and have our main meal (and dinner) back in our garden, in a rather more tranquil setting...
So this is pot-roasted pheasant breast, stuffed with fresh spinach/rosemary and wrapped in pancetta, in a morel, white wine and crème fraîche sauce, and sprinkled with fresh parsley:

was very good.. taste wise it was tops but the base was a tad hard for my lack of teeth lol.. might make a softer one next time.
pepperoni was from tesco... i gave it a minute on a plate in microwave then wiped up all the grease from it(there was a lot) . made it healthier and it browned better

Good idea heating the pepperoni to de-grease it Grant, I’ll tell my good lady to check in Tesco’s, we’ve been getting from butcher but it’s very small diameter.

Nice one. Looks tasty, mate. More winter food for me, though:)
Marco.
Simple light lunch today, enjoyed al fresco in the warm Wrexham sunshine... Salad de Tomates, using vine tomatoes (with a classic vinaigrette), topped with fresh basil leaves/chopped shallots. and enjoyed with some crusty bread:

Then some fresh strawberries and ice-cream, with strawberry sauce:

Yum!:)

I know we've had a few nice days but spring has barely sprung and it would only have been about 6 degrees outside when I was eating this and my heating was on...
Surely one doesn't switch to eating exclusively salad on the 20th March? ;)
Nope, not at all. But when it's warm(ish) and sunny, as it has been here for most of the week, my diet changes accordingly, and I seek lighter/fresher foods, with 'comfort foods', such as cottage pie, soups, stews, etc, being for the winter months.
It's just how I've always been, mate, and also a European thing (as is the desire to eat al fresco). We're all different:)
For sure though it gets much colder at night, which signifies that it's still only April, not June. However, my main meals are generally enjoyed at lunch time, with evening meals being mostly snacks, so the former are eaten outside when the temp is higher.
Marco.
Went to a lot of trouble with this.. [emoji23]

Different strokes Marco. I honestly don't feel the need to restrict/vary my diet based on the weather/season, I have whatever I fancy.

Lol, yes, but you're not getting the point. When the weather's warmer (facilitating outdoor eating) *I FANCY* different types of food!:eyebrows:
Therefore, I'm not restricting anything... Sitting eating a stew or a plate of hot soup, on a warm sunny day, for ME would simply not be desirable, so lighter foods appeal more. That's why pubs and restaurants have different menus for the summer and winter:)
I'm also someone who likes eating foods (particularly certain fruits and veg) when they're *in season*, and therefore at their freshest and tastiest. In that respect, having strawberries in April was somewhat of a departure from that, but they looked good in the deli where I bought them - and they were, although still not a patch on the ones available in the summer.
Anyway, that's just me, and how I eat (and also most Europeans) - feel free to do otherwise, lol!:D
