Salmon and veg with rice
Going to do in the rest of those chicken goujons I think. With the rice noodles again to bulk it out a bit. Is there a way to make rice noodles taste of something? I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas.

Home-made chilli con carne, rice and green peas, was a bit spicy!

Salmon and veg with rice
Looks great, Grant! Is that a pic of your own food though, or one you've just plucked from the 'net?;)
More seriously, mate, are you feeling any different or better since your recent change of diet? :)
Marco.
Is there a way to make rice noodles taste of something?
Yup! You're not just eating them plain, are you?;)
As others have said, they need to be served (cooked) with some kind of sauce, and in that respect you could buy a packet, as has been mentioned. However, if you *really* want to make them tasty, then you have to 'cook the flavour in'...
So, do you have a wok or a decent frying pan?
If so, in a very hot pan or wok, toss the rice noodles in some sesame oil, fresh garlic and chilli, light (not dark) soy sauce, and fresh ginger. The heat will infuse the flavours into the noodles and they'll taste amazing, and better than any bought packet of sauce!
*But* watch you don't overcook them. If the pan or wok is hot enough, then you're only talking a matter of minutes to stir-fry through and serve. Enjoy
Marco.
I've seen Japanese and Chinese eat them plain.
I have got a wok but I was hoping to avoid introducing an unnecessary third stage. Remember 'Doll' noodles? They had a little sachet of powder you chucked in with them to give the some flavour. But you don't seem to be able to get them anymore.
I very much doubt they'd have been plain. Most likely they'd have had at least some soy sauce on them, or they'd have been seasoned in some other way...
Introducing an unnecessary third stage? Lol... You mean you'd rather be lazy and not do any real cooking?;)
Well, it's up to you. Food's like anything else in life: you only get out of it what you put into it!! You don't need a wok. A decent-sized frying pan will do.
Marco.

Best leave the noodles plain and have sauce with the chicken. Some veg too would be good. Tesco do various bags of fresh stir fry veg, do them with a bit of seasoning.

I'm not keen on sauce on chicken. Might try some soy sauce on the noodles, that sounds easy enough. Anyway I've scoffed it all now. It's boozing time!

Course it's my pic. Just tried a close up. Was good. I'm still soldiering on with diet. Getting to the nitty gritty stage where u don't notice so much and thus have to be on ur guard.
Too early to say yet how much improvements there is but I'm determined to get there

It's the taste of the noodles he's finding is lacking, so how will adding sauce to the chicken improve matters there, daftee?
In any case, chicken goujons aren't a Chinese thing, so they're not really designed to be eaten with a Chinese-style sauce, or for that matter, rice noodles. If it's just plain chicken strips, however, then that's a different matter.
If it's actual goujons Martin has though, then all they need is heated up and served with some garlic mayo and a wedge of lemon!
Marco.

There's one by the football ground but it's about a mile and half to walk. Do they still sell them then? They don't in the supermarkets.

Everything I mentioned, Chris, is available in any UK supermarket. No need for a Chinese one in this case.
Marco.

Ah, are you talking about a wok or the ingredients I mentioned earlier? If it's the former, then you can find them in the kitchen department of most good UK supermarkets, but the ones sold in Chinese supermarkets will be better (and usually cheaper).
Marco.

I tend to like noodles plain or maybe with a little oyster sauce and pepper. Then liven up what I'm having with them.

Sure, that's fair enough, but you're not Martin - and he's already said that he finds the noodles just plain rather tasteless, so we're trying to find ways of solving that. Oyster sauce is a decent shout, though :)

All those little rectangular packs of dried noodles of various makes come with a small sachet of seasoning as far as I'm aware.
Not sure why you'd need a wok though unless you're doing something to go with them. The grand kids eat noodles as a snack and I do them in a saucepan with boiling water from the kettle. Just add the seasoning once they're hot.

Yeah, they're ok, but they're not proper noodles :nono:
If Martin's talking about having real noodles (rather than simply convenience ones), then he'll need a pan or wok to cook them in!
Marco.
That packet above is a nissin one. There are a few different dry ones in Tesco s Asian bit. I usually use the ore cooked vacuum ones. Add my own sauce. Hoisin and plum. Can get bottles of each in Morrisons or sesame oil and ginger and soy as you said
Could someone tell me who or what the feck "Nissin" is??

Cheers, Jim. Soz, never heard of them. Are they proper noodles though, or simply glorified 'pot noodles'? The only noodles we buy are from Chinese supermarkets, but have never looked at the make.

They manufacture different types of noodles depending on which market they are selling into, but a lot of them are the instant pot noodle type. Not your fresh Chinese noodle:(
Cheers, Jim. That's what I thought. They're more like a convenience 'ready meal', and so not something we're likely to use.
Marco.
These are one of the types of noodles we buy from a Chinese supermarket:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/9WUvmB.jpg
...and they go into a wok with vegetables and/or meat, and are then stir-fried with some type of sauce, made up of fresh ingredients. We like to eat Chinese food that Chinese people would actually eat!;)

Bangers 'n' mash
Cumberland sausages, mustard mash, broad beans, green beans, broccoli and carrots.
Bottle of Stella Artois to drink.
Instant noodles were invented by Momofuku Ando of Nissin Foods in 1958. they are just air dried egg noodles really.
Yup, but just like anything else, you get different qualities of noodles, and those aren't the best (and perhaps also not the cheapest). I forget how much we pay for the ones we get from the Chinese supermarket, but it's not much - and the quality is superb!
Marco.
The Chinese supermarket is a great place to go food shopping.
Anyone living in London should get themselves up to North London to visit Wing Yips. It is massive spread across two huge buildings with its own large underground car park. There are about 6 isles of noodles alone! Their best secret treasure is a small restaurant in one part of the building which serves real and amazing Chinese food to customers, most of whom are Chinese.
It is a great day out and you will spend best part of a day in there looking at stuff.

Hard to see whats actually in this but it’s kind of like a lasagna made with corn tortillas and slow-cooked chicken chilli.
Cooked the chilli yesterday using chicken thighs, black beans and a mix of chili peppers (Ancho, Cascabel, Jalapeño, Chipotle and Guajillo), tomato, chicken stock, garlic and onion.
Just layered the chilli with corn tortillas and a bit of grated cheese on top.
Served with a bit of salad with honey/mustard dressing.

Your s&s is quite similar to how I do it Grant. I'm not a fan of tomato in the s&s though and I tend to throw it all in a jug and let the microwave do it's thing (with the occasional stir).
4 Tbs Sugar, 6 Tbs Rice (or White Wine) Vinegar, 1 Tbsp Light Soy, 2 Tbs Water, Pineapple Juice & Cornflour to taste (usually bulk it out with Pineapple Juice). 3 or 4 mins in the microwave, stirring every minute.

Looks good, mate. We're doing a barbie... Got some nice Barnsley chops, from the local butcher, which have been marinating all day in fresh lemon juice, rosemary and garlic, so they'll be barbecued and served simply with a cold green bean and potato salad.
There's still plenty of rosé wine, left from lunch, but I think only a good claret will do for the lamb, so I've opened a nice bottle of Médoc. Del's just back from work, so she'll enjoy that too, and we can sit and have it together on the patio, listening to some tunes, until the sun goes down:cheers:
I'm actually just about to make her a nice cocktail with Limoncello liqueur and Prosecco, filled with ice and fresh lime. She deserves to be spoiled:)

 No, Mrs. Pony helps in the kitchen sometimes, and these were surplus to requirements.
I had a couple of reservations:
1.Was it a case of my belly or the bin? Were they not good enough for paying customers?
2. I gave a bit to the cat who just sniffed at it then looked at me as if to say "are you trying to poison me?" before walking of in a sulk. And she'll happily spend an afternoon licking her own arse.
Anyway, 15 hours later no apparent ill effects. Just the usual first thing dump which is more to do with gravity when getting out of bed and standing.

And no sheep reported missing in the nearby field.
I sometimes wondered (like you do) how farmers can keep tabs on all their sheep. Turns out they count the legs and divide by four. Clever stuff. In fact the farmer can be considered to be a man outstanding in his field.

Polpette (meatballs) on the go at the moment.
Used what ingredients I had to hand. 50/50 beef/pork mince, grana padano cheese, ciabatta soaked in milk, garlic, salt, pepper and finally eggs to bind.
Rolled in flour then browned (sort of) in Olive Oil then plonked into a simple tomato sauce (good olive oil, grated sweet white onion, tomato, Basil, salt and a bit of sugar).
Have put a batch in the freezer and will have these with pasta later.

You could do the 'resistant starch' trick of cooking the pasta, cooling it down and then reheating it later. Apparently makes the pasta act like a fibre (resists producing glucose by about 50%). Reheated pasta is apparently much healthier than a 'normal' carb.

One of my 'specials' is sausage omelette. Fry chipolata sausages until they start browning, cut them into inch long pieces then finish frying them. Pour beaten eggs for the omelette into the pan and sprinkle the sausage pieces into it, fry until cooked to suit. Comes out great! The grand kids like that one. :D

Looks good Grant :) Is there any advantage using arrowroot rather than corn flour to thicken sauces?
Sauces that are acidic are better with arrowroot.
also better if you want to freeze it, or if its going to be cooked at a lower temperature or for a long time. i prefer its taste too. cornstarch is better in milk sauces. arrowroot thickens with less powder too
Health Benefits of Arrowroot
Arrowroot is rich in the following nutrients:
B vitamins, Pyridoxine, Thiamin, Niacin, Iron, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc and Phosphorous plus its gluten free.
cornstarch is buggered about with a lot and is not very healthy... was geoff that got me on it

For lunch - Salad Nicoise, fresh watermelon for dessert
For dinner - beef lasagne with a green salad, no pudding but a glass of red wine.

Hehehe... Well, six sausages went in, so let us know how many 'bangers' pop out the other end!:D
Marco.
Rib-eye steak, seared red and green peppers, with boiled carrots and steamed French beans, leeks and broccoli. A couple of mandarins for dessert.
A glass or two of 2012 Chateau d'Arguan.

No, that's what she called you, when she served it up: here you go, ya bassa! Although she missed out an 's'....:D

Looking good as always.
Now you need to master the pancake roll.
You like your sweet and sour, Granty!:eyebrows:
Quite a mild evening in Wrexham, warm enough to have a barbecue outside, so that's what we're doing... Once we've finished our Campari Soda aperitifs, we'll be starting off with some roasted portobello mushrooms with pine nuts and halloumi:

Watched this being made this morning on Saturday Kitchen and it looked good!
Same as this spiced green bean and tomato dish:

...which will be accompanying some barbecued piri-piri chicken:

Ha - only because I like the flavour of barbecued meat, plus it facilitates us eating outside in nice weather (such as this evening):)
I also like a good sweet and sour (and yours looks good), but for me it's more of a winter dish. When the weather's nice like this, I prefer other things.

I assume pictures one and two are Del's and picture three is all for you (greedy guts!)
Looks better than the pizza I had for tea. I'm on a health kick at the moment, so no chips with it :)
I'll eat better tomorrow - a free meal at the pub, as a thank you for helping the chef with something this morning. I know he's doing something with venison, so that will probably be it.
LOL - yes, but I might save some of the chicken and eat more of the veg, as I love my veg - and the mushrooms (just being served up now) look gorgeous!:drool:
Italians (and indeed most Europeans) LIVE TO EAT, not eat to live, like many Brits (obviously excluding our members who post on this thread, who clearly enjoy their grub), so GOOD food is a *massive* part of our lives and culture - and we like to eat well, and healthily, too. It's why we generally live to a ripe old age;)
Life's too short to eat boring food..... It's really bad for the soul.
Enjoy your pub lunch tomorrow, sounds like it'll be good!:)

My daughter's fiancé's family are Italian and apparently live in the hills miles from anywhere. She says that when they've been over visiting, the women seem to spend most of their day in the kitchen preparing some amazing meals.
They love my daughter to bits, probably because she has a huge appetite, is never picky, and is always keen to help and learn.
They are a good match, as he is nearly as crazy as she is. A wedding over there might be a nice thing :)

That's *exactly* how it is, and what I've experienced and become accustomed to since I was a kid: life revolves around fantastic food! Your day is planned around your meals, and food is talked about constantly, sharing recipes with friends and family, or telling each other what nice restaurants you've been to.
However, it's not only Italians who do that, but also the French, Spanish, Greeks, Portuguese, Germans, etc - almost anywhere you go abroad, GOOD (home-made) food is as important as life itself, and something we're all extremely passionate about!

I'm not surprised that they love her to bits - and yes Italian weddings (and religious celebrations) are amazing - that is if you love good food and drink, and plenty of it!:D
I remember going to the celebration of my cousin's first Holy Communion, in the little mountain village my family come from in Tuscany, I was about 12 at the time, and we arrived at their farmhouse around 12 noon, for 'lunch', which didn't finish until 6pm that evening!!
From the antipasto, followed by course after course of utterly amazing homemade pasta, vegetable and meat dishes, to the dessert and cakes afterwards, all from their own produce, and accompanied by amazing wines, again all made by themselves from their own grapes, and eaten outside in their pergola on a lovely sunny day, with everyone chatting, laughing and enjoying themselves, it was an unforgettable experience...
That's why I enjoy eating outside at home here, doing barbecues or whatever, when the weather allows, as it's in my blood [Del's too, from her German heritage] and the lifestyle our families were brought up with. Plus, in terms of Del and I, there's nothing nicer than spending time together like that, just chatting over a nice meal and enjoying each other's company.
It's what makes you close as a couple, and probably why we've been married now for nearly 27 years! It's certainly a far cry from what you so often see now, with both members of a couple glued to their phones, or worse, don't get on and spend all their time arguing!
Anyway, since you're interested in Italy, here's a pic of the little mountain village in Tuscany my family come from, called Barga:
