Cool... Btw, if you're into hot dogs, the ones that they sell in their shop to take home (the same as those that they serve on the premises in their cafe), with matching rolls, are great! Sometimes, a bit of junk food is good for the soul ;)
Plus, their hot dog mustard is the biz...

Indeed, there’s another Marco, a Mr. Pierre-White, who said that after taking his daughter out for class in the evening, that there was no substitute for a McDonald’s.

Simple pasta dish tonight, Sicilian style, so lots of tomatoes, onions and garlic reduced right down with generous extra virgin olive oil, and a handful of basil, GOOD pinch of salt, and GENEROUS grind of black pepper. Served with tagliatelle or rigatoni, haven’t decided yet.

Well, it was last night’s meal really. Youngest son came over and likes Mexican so I did a chilli with all the works.
8 hour chilli made with Shin and Skirt Beef, using Ancho & Chipotle peppers. Mexican Red Rice. Refried beans done with Pinto beans from scratch. Fresh Guacamole in a Corn Tortilla bowl. Made the bowls using a little set of moulds I got last week on fleabay for a fiver. [emoji4]

Was nice
Pour Madame:
Tiger prawns in a chilli, lemon and balsamic vinegar dressing to start, followed by oven-baked marinated Sea Bass with a green side salad.
Pour Monsieur:
Chicken liver paté to start, followed by Lamb Costolette (lamb with a rosemary and red currant dressing) with poached leek parcels.
https://theitaliancuisineasitreallyis.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/costolette-agnello-carrc3a9-of-lamb-red-currant.jpg
Washed down with a 2011 Chateau Les Eyquem, Haute Graves, Margeaux.
Chocolate Mousse for dessert.
Fantastic stuff, Barry! Could you link to the restaurant (is it Italian or simply just European), as the food looks rather good? :)
Good wine choice, too! No 'e' in Margaux, though.. ;)
Marco.

Shucks Marco,
After consuming 3/4 of a bottle of wine, you expect correct orthography?
Anyway, it's an unassuming little Italian restaurant in Camden, London, called 'Small and Beautiful'.
I wouldn't recommend them for their pizzas though (they're not freshly made), but other a la carte items are pretty good.
The chocolate mousse was not as good as it used to be - less rich and less firm, and served in a larger dish.
Small and unassuming can be most desirable... In Italy, the best places to eat are often the trattorie, and even osterie, as opposed to the ristorante.
Like you, I'm a big fan of Margaux (and good Médoc), but with your lamb dish, and since you were in an Italian restaurant, I'd have gone for Brunello di Montalcino, at I suspect around a similar price. When in Rome, and all that... :)
The slightly disappointing mousse may have been down to it having been made by a different chef, or they've cut back on the quality of the ingredients.
Just had a Google... http://www.smallandbeautiful.co.uk/
I like the sound of the live jazz and blues. Have you been there when live music has been on?
Oh, and having checked out their wine list, I note the presence of Brunello di Montalcino. Next time you're there, try it, as trust me, it will really hit the spot with the lamb or Tournedos Rossini ;)

Looks worse than it was, just the top layer was crispy, plenty of stock left. I covered them up for the final 20 mins so they didn’t dry up to much. I never used any butter as I was trying to be a bit healthier, just a drizzle of good olive oil between each layer. The onions on top make it look more frazzled than it was underneath. Honest Guv! 🤣

If there's a nice sauce, all you'll need is some crusty bread to mop it up! Or in the summer, a nice fresh salad to accompany your pasta. I tend not to eat so much salad though, in the winter.

Kebabs aren't really spicy though, and so aren't the same thing.
I just like having different types of food, and need some variety in my diet, as I'd get bored eating the same stuff all the time, which is why after 2 weeks on holiday of consuming solely European food, as nice as it is, I badly crave a hot curry! :)

Occasionally. I don't mind a bit of chilli. It's pongy aromatic spices I'm not keen on, hence my dislike of curry (and other Indian food).
I make a decent Chinese (American Cantonese style) meal now and then, quite good at those, they look and taste authentic. Might do one this week actually.
I love all that too, and all forms of Asian or middle eastern herbs and spices - anything that's tasty and a bit different is good in my book! :)
In an average week at home, with meals, I can go from having traditional Italian, to British, French, Spanish, then to Indian, Chinese, Thai, Japanese or even Greek food - and often other things too, using meat, fish, vegetables or salads, plus overall I prefer rice, couscous or polenta, to potatoes. No way could I eat the same type of food all the time.
As they say, variety is the spice of life!!

All for a tenner. does be a few meals.. drink is currently bottle of wine, 6 bottles(glass) pack of coke, 4 bottles of Italian lager ot 2 bottles of squash of some sort.

It was a good looking pizza. I paid £12 for one very much like that, yesterday, in a restaurant..:hmm:
I sometimes go for a Tesco lunch deal, which includes a sandwich, drink, crisps and (I believe) a snack. Great value.
Forgot I had this so will have to put up with a thick cut ribeye from Morrisons. U.K. Through and through

Looks good. I'd like a grilled tomato and some peas with mine, plus a nice dab of English Mustard.
had a big tomato but no room in pan. that was a big steak. struggled to eat it.
I have found that Sainsbury's 21 day aged rib eyes are consistently very good. Check for the best marbling from what they have on the shelf.
I had a 30 day fillet from there too recently, also very good.
The vacuum packing on steaks these days really keeps them tip top I think. Same applies to fish. We are spoilt.
I agree with your findings, Justers, but if you can, it's still best to go to a good independent butchers for your meat, where everything sold is sourced locally - no supermarket stuff can match that :)
Alternatively, if you've got a Lidl near you, try this: https://www.thesun.co.uk/money/4745399/lidl-launches-21-day-cote-de-boeuf-steak-and-its-15-cheaper-than-waitrose-but-youll-have-to-be-quick/

Marco.
Rib eye inch thick from Morrisons. Got it a week ago. Had forgot and was use today. Was perfect in the vacuum pack. Chips were frozen. Not great but ok
Ah I see... How did you find the ribeye compared with your usual fillet? :)
Marco.
I had a ribeye out of aldi couple of weeks ago but last few times Ive looked they have been very fatty more than marbled.
This one was nice too but I still prefer a fillet overall
Pancakes tonight of course. Lemon and sugar, rolled, done. [emoji4] Washed down with a couple of Sierra Nevada Pale Ales.

My wife does too, a rare fillet is her favourite. I hammer it with sea salt, cracked black pepper and extra virgin olive oil before it goes on the flat pan. It is a very different experience to ribeyes, t bones etc., which I prefer medium rare or medium. I’ll eat fillet raw, ultra thin sliced as sashimi with a soy honey and sciracha dipping sauce too.
Sausage roll and chips for lunch. Not tried this before but looks nice

Today we're celebrating Chinese New Year, so Del's making a selection of Dim Sum (from scratch), along with various dipping sauces, which will simply be served with some Jasmine tea, as we're off alcohol for Lent.
After that, we're reverting to a traditional Sunday roast, this time of locally-sourced Welsh lamb, which will be infused with fresh garlic and rosemary and served with a selection of fresh vegetables and potatoes. This will be accompanied with some non-alcoholic sparkling apple and pear perry.
I'll see if I can take some pics and post them later!

The trick is not to use too much, it's quite salty, in fact I don't add any extra salt.
Talking of Polish, Dad was born in Poland, came here before WW2, qualified in Engineering, soon got called up and sent out to Burma in the Royal Engineers. Fortunately, he survived and came back here.

That looks good Grant! Did you make the sauce yourself? :)
There's perhaps just a touch too much of it there for me (as in Italy the 'star of the show' is always the pasta, not the sauce), so we simply 'coat' it in the accompanying sauce, without any excess showing on the plate, but as you're not Italian, that doesn't matter!
Otherwise, all that's missing is some freshly-grated Parmesan on top
Marco.
No its a morrisons one. Very decent for a fresh ready ... the grater was dirty lol

Nice one, Alex. Didn't know you had Polish connections! There's a large and very vibrant Polish community in Wrexham, and has been since the war (even the Catholic churches here have masses said in Polish), so we're fortunate to have access to a number of good Polish supermarkets, such as Chata Polska:
http://www.chatapolska.pl/
We buy most of our bread there, as it's excellent quality and much cheaper than what would be considered as 'boutique foreign bread' sold in some UK supermarkets. I also love their yogurts, which are tastier (fruitier) than most of those from 'big brands', sold in UK supermarkets. Some of the cold meats are also superb, and various other things, including the selection of Polish lager! :)
There are also a few Portuguese delicatessens, and even restaurants, in Wrexham, as there is also a sizeable Portuguese community, and we buy numerous things from there, such as top-notch smoked paprika and special chillies, for making Piri-Piri, clams in shells, prawns and other forms of seafood, also fruit juice, which I have with my breakfast, as they sell flavours you don't really see here, such as pear or peach, and the orange is just superb, as it's thick, rich fruit nectar, not simply just watered down juice!
This stuff: https://sumolcompal.pt/en/brand/compal/compal-classico-nectar
...but I buy the same thing for just over £1
Oh, and not to mention the superb vinho verde and lovely red wine they sell, which they import from Portugal, and sell for just over £5 a bottle!!
'Keep the foreigners out', eh? ;)
Marco.

Eh?? So all those pics of bread rolls with soup you've posted, were just a figment of my imagination?:D;)

I had a crusty granary roll with some St Agur cheese. That was well tasty. I bit of fruit afterwards.

Lol - it's still bread, daftee:D! You could eat less white bread rolls, and more Polish sourdough, which would overall be better for you :)

I find that too. Try the Tesco High Protein loaf Grant. They're small and very tasty. Lasts me about three days.

I don't like small loaves, somehow feel cheated! I like a big slice of bread, makes a decent sized sandwich.

Suits me. I'm trying not to eat too much. Especially as my later meal tends towards the large side.

The loaf in the fridge is from Tesco, just looked to see if it was a high protein one, no it's a Multiseed Farmhouse Batch Loaf, quite nice, especially toasted, quite nutty in flavour.

I hadn't though about food for this evening, but you've got me pondering bangers. Sausage, egg, chips 'n beans could work. :)

The Shape of Water for the second time, I often see good films more than once. I also really took in Sally Hawkins' performance, outstanding acting, she owned that part. Before seeing it, I would have said the best female actor Oscar was a done deal with Frances McDormand (Three Billboards), but I wouldn't want to bet on either now, definitely a two horse race IMO.
I hope it's Frances McDormand, but they both deserve something.
Did you ever see Maudie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maudie_(film)) Marco? Seemed to have slipped under the radar last year, but another outstanding performance from Sally H. True story too, with good music and a connection to Cowboy Junkies as they used her artwork and there's some CJ music in there too. I think it'd be right up your street, Del too.
Nice one on The Shape of Water - superb film. I'll be watching it twice too (this time at home), when it's released on Sky!:)
No, I haven't seen Maudie (wasn't aware of it), but sounds good, so will defo check it out, and cheers for the recco!

Good advice, had some of my home-made soup instead, was very nice.
After that, had Bubble and Squeak with an egg on top, simple, but nice. Made with mashed potato, Savoy cabbage, plenty of freshly ground black pepper and a little salt. Cooked in a small amount of Olive Oil.
This is one I prepared earlier !!
