That's *exactly* how it is, and what I've experienced and become accustomed to since I was a kid: life revolves around fantastic food! Your day is planned around your meals, and food is talked about constantly, sharing recipes with friends and family, or telling each other what nice restaurants you've been to.

However, it's not only Italians who do that, but also the French, Spanish, Greeks, Portuguese, Germans, etc - almost anywhere you go abroad, GOOD (home-made) food is as important as life itself, and something we're all extremely passionate about!

I'm not surprised that they love her to bits - and yes Italian weddings (and religious celebrations) are amazing - that is if you love good food and drink, and plenty of it!:D

I remember going to the celebration of my cousin's first Holy Communion, in the little mountain village my family come from in Tuscany, I was about 12 at the time, and we arrived at their farmhouse around 12 noon, for 'lunch', which didn't finish until 6pm that evening!!

From the antipasto, followed by course after course of utterly amazing homemade pasta, vegetable and meat dishes, to the dessert and cakes afterwards, all from their own produce, and accompanied by amazing wines, again all made by themselves from their own grapes, and eaten outside in their pergola on a lovely sunny day, with everyone chatting, laughing and enjoying themselves, it was an unforgettable experience...

That's why I enjoy eating outside at home here, doing barbecues or whatever, when the weather allows, as it's in my blood [Del's too, from her German heritage] and the lifestyle our families were brought up with. Plus, in terms of Del and I, there's nothing nicer than spending time together like that, just chatting over a nice meal and enjoying each other's company.

It's what makes you close as a couple, and probably why we've been married now for nearly 27 years! It's certainly a far cry from what you so often see now, with both members of a couple glued to their phones, or worse, don't get on and spend all their time arguing!

Anyway, since you're interested in Italy, here's a pic of the little mountain village in Tuscany my family come from, called Barga:

Continuing the Italian theme...

Melanzane alla parmigiana is our Sunday treat today.

It’s just cooking in the oven now.

Going to have a simply leaf salad in balsamic dressing and a nice glass of red to accompany [emoji4]

Thanks Grant!

It's a bit of a faff to prepare to be honest, so it's not something I do very often these days. It does taste (and smell) great though. Definitely use a light olive oil for frying though.
You can dust the aubergine in seasoned flour but I prefer to use Fine Semolina if I've got some.

I kept it simple for lunch.

A large chunk of wholemeal sourdough bread, well buttered with lots of creamy Lancashire cheese. It was absolutely delicious.

To follow I had a blackcurrant bakewell tart and an orange. Very nice.

Two BBQs in a row. Yesterday I made chimichurri and used it very simply, basting unseasoned rib eye steaks and chicken wings.

Try this recipe it is amazing:

I did add an extra tablespoon of red wine vinegar though.

As we went out for lunch at a local restaurant, we just wanted something light for tea, so put together a nice cheeseboard, and opened a bottle of Crozes Hermitage, to go with it:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/921/sEW5VS.jpg

Cheeses shown (all from Lidl): Brie de Meaux, Reserve Gruyère, Gorgonzola DOP Dolce, and from their Spanish week, Cuña del Queso Curado Viejo, which is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS, enjoyed with some of Lidl's (also excellent) salted crackers and red onion chutney.

Still 18°C here, even at this time of night!

Andy, your Bolognaise sauce looks very good - and that's from an Italian! ;) Wee tip (if you hadn't considered it already), serve it with tagliatelle, instead of spaghetti:

1) Because the sauce will stick to the pasta better, and if you buy good quality egg tagliatelle, they'll taste nicer than spaghetti.

2) In Italy, there's no such thing as Spag Bol... It would always be known as Tagliatelle al Ragu, 'ragu' being the Bolognaise sauce.

Anyway, looks great. I'd be having that with a nice bottle of Chianti Riserva DOCG, and some crusty bread. Enjoy!

Really looking forward to dinner tonight, not sure what I'll have but I've been on antibiotics the last couple of weeks and suffering what's best described as gastric Armageddon. Now my appetite has returned I fancy something simple but tasty, I've got some Porky White's Surry sausages in the fridge that are calling my name and along with creamy mashed potato and grilled mushrooms I think I'm sorted. They did have Franziskaner Weissbeer but I was in a lager-y sort of mood. Also Becks in Germany bears little resemblance to the gassy stuff they serve up in the UK!

I was inbound - am currently in the plane back at Heathrow waiting for them to find us buses to take us to the terminal. Nothing exciting - just a day trip to see a supplier for work. Alarm went off at 3:30am and I’m looking forward to bed! Luckily the work taxi service is waiting outside with an S Class Merc to whisk me home!

Yeah, that's true. Becks is a different animal in Germany. When I'm there though, I try and avoid anything 'mainstream' like that, and prefer something more typically local, but then you were at an airport, not in a town centre bar....

Anyway, cool. The lifestyle of a high-flier, eh?:D

Well, tonight’s dinner was Lamb & Haggis Toast with Chorizo Mayonnaise, Chartreuse Whipped Cheese and Mint Jelly, followed by Loin of Cotswold Venison with Baharat Spiced Cauliflower, Moroccan Aubergine and Dukkah Crumble Ragu and with Chocolate and Ale Cake with Salted Caramel and Muscovado Ice Cream for dessert.

I would love to claim this all for myself but the fact is, after trying for four years, we finally manage to book another table at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow - Tom Kerridge’s Michelin starred pub.

It was truly stunning; the venison in particular was one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten!

Sounds fantastic, Adam. I rate Tom highly as a chef, and I like his personality. May I ask what you were charged for the meal (or some of the dishes), just for reference?:)

There are a couple of Michelin starred restaurants up here, and you're looking at around £25 for starters, and £40 or so for main courses.

The starters were £15-£18 each and the mains £30-£35. For six of us including wine and a round of posh gins beforehand, the bill was almost exactly£600.

We went with two other couples and when we all hit our 40ths a few years ago, we went for a posh meal on the occasion of each, and three of these were Michelin starred establishments. One was the Hand and Flowers and, not only was it the cheapest of them all, but it was the only place that we all vowed we would absolutely have to go back to!

As I said, it took us 4 years to succeed but we will be going back again - I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Nice one, Adam. Pretty standard prices then for a Michelin restaurant. Sounds very good, but if it's that hard to get a table, then I won't be able to go, as the only way I'd have been going there would have been on the off chance, if I was ever in the area, down your way.

This is our favourite Michelin starred joint, near us. The food here is superb, and they also have rooms: https://www.checkerswales.co.uk/

Grant's meal pictures always make me hungry, even when I'm not!

When me and my brother were kids, we were so poor that we used to look at pictures of food in a big cookbook my mother had, and pretend it was our tea :)

A long time ago there was an advert for Mr Kipling's Cherry Bakewells, were the narrator said he used to wish he had one all to himself. I think Mr Kipling missed the point by making those tiny little 'individual' ones. We wanted a FULL SIZE one all to ourselves! But as they used to say, Mr Kipling does make exceedingly small cakes.

Cheers, mate, Perfect summer food was exactly what I wanted. Nice and light, fresh, zingy and tasty!:)

The pans are just from Ikea - they're good, though. Btw, in terms of the wine, if anyone wants to taste what *proper* Lambrusco is like, rather than the watery Ribena-like pap, posing as such usually sold in the UK, then CHECK THIS OUT. This is the real deal.

It's an ideal summer wine, as it's a fizzy red that can be served slightly chilled, but it has BAGS of luscious blackcurrant fruit flavours and can also be enjoyed without food. Plus, this is a wine that will possibly also appeal to non-wine, or more specifically, non-red wine drinkers, as it's slightly sweet and extremely drinkable, with no acidic edge at all.

It could be the best £7 you'll spend on a bottle of wine this summer!! ;)

I haven't been able to buy any from Tesco, Waitrose or the fishmonger in the market and all three said they were 'out of season'.

Not sure, as some areas serve all year round. The peak season is October til March.

They are local mussels but I didnt ask if they came out of the chiller or not. Place was busy as usual with a lot of mussels being consumed.

All I can say is, they tasted good and I haven’t been talking to God on the big white telephone this morning! [emoji23]

I love beans on toast, ultra comforting but sadly I can't eat them anymore as they wreak havoc on my innards ( not wind but really bad cramping ). I don't think it's the beans themselves I think it's something in the sauce. I've tried loads of different brands but not much better and they just don't taste like Heinze.

I've found that really bad cramping is just wind whilst in polite company with not enough 'alone time'.

Salad, for me, is something that usually accompanies a meal, not a meal in itself, unless it's a substantial (and interesting) one, with fish and/or meat in it, to bulk it out:)

For me, done well, they're fab! You can keep yer bland and boring, dry limp lettuce, cucumber and tomato, with no dressing (olive oil or balsamic vinegar) on it though, as you often get here in the UK!

Agreed - I love all the vegetables listed and I also like aubergine as part of a ratatouille; something which I make regularly. There aren't any vegetables which I don't like, but regard artichokes as a bit of a waste of time.

I used to be a very faddy eater as a child but 'grew out of it'.

Tee-hee... Not heard of 'tollies' for a while - well yours must be a bloody funny colour!:eyebrows:

In all seriousness though, one of my pet hates is hearing parents these days moaning about 'oh I can't get little Johnny to eat veg, he only likes chips'... Well perhaps that's because YOU don't like veg (and only eat chips), so that's how 'little Johnny' has been brought up!

The fact is, kids mimic the behaviour of their parents from a very early age, so they're not BORN hating broccoli, or whatever, but if YOU don't like it, chances are they won't either - and so the spiral continues...

That's why you have to introduce them to fresh vegetables (cooked properly), as soon as possible.

My mum used to mash up carrots, cauliflower, peas, etc, into a puree and gave me that as baby food (instead of the processed shit you get in jars), from before I even had teeth! And so, I got used to flavours of different vegetables and developed a taste for them, which is why I like them now.

Mashed potato with a little bit of cream and butter in it was my favourite!:)

The biggest problem these days, of course, is that hardly anyone cooks from scratch anymore, using fresh produce, and so kids are fed a diet of microwave chips, chicken nuggets and other processed muck, so it's no wonder they grow up hating anything that tastes REAL!:rolleyes:

[Rant over];)

most kids get fussy about food now. too many fast foods they see on tv and their mates eat etc and they often just do it to rebel i guess. parents often start with the best of intentions, but reality is sometimes does not equate with those intentions. all you can do is persist with making it available.
eventually they will try other things. worst thing you can do is make a fuss over it.

Marco

Yes, I like ratatouille, but still find the rather 'sloppy'/spongy texture of aubergines a little unpleasant. Artichokes are Del's favourite vegetable. You only eat the tips though, with Hollandaise sauce - gorgeous!:)

As stated, I was never a faddy eater. My parents and grandparents were the same. You were brought up to eat what was put down in front of you, and like it or lump it. Fortunately, they were all great cooks, so that was never a hardship!;)

I'm surprised you were a faddy eater, given your parents penchant for fine dining, and correct me if I'm wrong, your participation with them in that from a fairly early age?

Marco.

Marco
05-06-2018, 10:16
most kids get fussy about food now. too many fast foods they see on tv and their mates eat etc and they often just do it to rebel i guess.

I agree, but despite that, if you've been brought up from an early age to like fresh veg (in the way I've described), then you'll still enjoy the taste of it, regardless or not of going through a rebellious phase of eating fast food.

The problem is everyone these days is running around like headless chickens [work/life balance all over the place], and so they have no time to cook proper meals, either for themselves of their families, therefore it's more often than not 'chicken ding' for dinner, than proper food - and if that's what you're used to, then that's what you'll grow up liking.

Simples.... And generations now, in the UK, have grown up with that type of food culture. Until folks these days alter their lifestyles or MAKE time for the things that really matter in life, such as eating healthily, things will never change.

As far as kids are concerned, I think there are huge opportunities being missed in education too.

If we are so concerned with equipping our kids for survival in the modern world, how come so few of them understand the rudiments of how to prepare and cook the basics?

It would at least begin to address the problem of parents not being able to pass on the skills (either through time constraints or lack of knowledge themselves), and would equip the kids for later life (college or work or whatever) in a way that would be more affordable and sustainable.

I would suggest less emphasis on Food and Technology (eco-friendly burger box design and fast-food outlet workflow ) and more emphasis on how to make a loaf of bread and cook vegetables.

No doubt there'll be some 'Health & Safety' reason why it isn't achievable but that's another soapbox for another time.

I remember a few years back going into a nursery and making bread rolls with a bunch of pre-school kids. They all loved making the dough at the beginning of the day, checking how their rolls were proving, then waiting for them to come out of the oven. They all went home with a big smile on their faces having made their very own bread to take home with them. Surely that's one way to get kids engaged with real food?

Well said Tony, it's also sowing the seeds for potential career paths in the future, something other than staring at a screen. I've recently started baking my own bread and I find it very satisfying to create a good loaf with no additives or preservatives and that tastes so different to shop bought. Encouraging children to learn the basics of cookery can only be a good thing.

My point being, however, that ketchup or brown sauce should be reserved for putting on 'junk food';)

There's a marked difference between in it (say, as part of the sauce), and poured ON TOP of food, in its 'raw state'.... Honestly, it's a waste of your good cooking!

If you did that to the meal of an Italian or Frenchman, they'd crown you with the sauce bottle - either that, or it would be used as a rather novel suppository!!:D:trust:

Marco.

na, none in it... not that bizzare....yet. but you have to realise im scottish, british, so like ketchup:D quite healthy too compared to mayonnaise

Mayo? Aw gawd, no - that's even worse!:D S'ok, my dad's chippies few full of daftees like you, buying fish and chip butties, and Iru Bru in their droves, who all helped build up my inheritance fund!;)

I guess the difference is, we make our own sauces (full of proper healthy ingredients, such as the Marsala wine one I showed earlier) to accompany meat dishes, and not simply blob on a load of ketchup.....

Bet that was yum !!

My Mrs did a lovely signature Caribbean rice and peas, with fried plantain on the side and another lovely green leaf salad with shredded beatroot strips and a dollop of coleslaw, washed down with Barefoot Merlot Californian Red

- All very scrumptious.

Now *that* I like the sound of Rob, especially as no doubt it would be authentic! :respect:

She's now having an 1hrs lay down in bed while I indulge some more system music vinyl joy - yay !! Been a fab summers weekend oh! and a day off from work tomorrow too - Yippee doo !! :yay: :D

Quality... Although do you not relax and listen to music together? Del and I do that all the time. Enjoy your day off tomorrow. I've got one, too:eyebrows:

He he !! Cant beat a day ( or many ) off :D

Good question Marco, she appreciates a good tune but not as obsessed with music like I am. It has always been a part of my life and a vital part of who I am, I just love music, hence hifi intrinsically being a passion as part of and out of that.

We are very close as we started out as friends when we were in our older teens and then became an item long after we'd built a close friendship, at the same time though we are quite individual too.

I'd love her to sit with me sometimes and get into it but it doesnt quite hit her the way it does me so she indulges in the little things she likes within the home, in between being a Mum and so on and I get into the tunes / system and AOS amongst other things whilst I'm not busying around the house and being a Dad :)

I love that you and Dell do that though, it's great and I can tell you appreciate it too, excellent !

I'm thinking of having chicken too. Not sure what to have with it yet.

Ended up doing some chunky chicken drumsticks with buttery parsnip mash, sugar snap peas and gravy. Yum!!

As it was another gloriously sunny day today in Wrexham, we dined 'al fresco'... This is one of Del's 'signature dishes', pan-fried veal breast stuffed with fresh asparagus, Parma ham and Bel Paese cheese, served with a fresh Marsala wine sauce:

And served up with some herby croquette potatoes and veg:

It was scrummy, especially with the asparagus now being in season!

Marco.

Ooh lovely!

I have done exactly the same dish only with chicken breast before (much better with veal though). [emoji106][emoji14]

Cheers, Tony. Veal is eaten more often in Tuscany than chicken, and btw the stuff I had today is British rosé veal, see here: https://alternativemeats.co.uk/catalog/category/view/s/british-rose-veal/id/182/ from our local butcher, not the milky-pale stuff, which has been cruelly produced.

We get chops, escalopes and joints of veal and keep it in the freezer. The butcher's even managed to get hold of some goat for us, which again is widely eaten in Tuscany. So next Sunday's lunch will be goat stew in red wine, mushrooms and herbs, served with polenta - a Tuscan classic!

Small piece of belly pork marinated in fennel seeds, black pepper, thyme, garlic and extra virgin olive oil. Just squeezed a load of lemon juice on it.

On its way now just dropped the temp low for a long cook... to raise again later.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180610/737ba878de69dbc1d24fa9f0fb2cb252.jpgRemains of this belly pork cold.

The marinade on the underside of what you see here tasted beyond finest deli after a couple of days in the fridge. There was much more of it than you see on the side here.

Warm it was only pretty good.

Truly stunning and genuinely surprised.

From the Father's Day thread, today's lunch...

Starting off with a few chilled Aperol spitzers, then onto the starter, which will be Del's home-made spinach and ricotta crespelle, followed by spezzatino di capretto al vino rosso (goat stew, marinated in red wine and herbs), and served with polenta.

The starter will be served with a bottle of Bardolino, and the main a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino. Then onto dessert, which will be a signature one of Del's, a freshly-made fruit Zabaglione.

Spinach and ricotta crespelle (essentially Italian savoury crêpes) with a fresh tomato and basil sauce:

Goat stew and polenta:

Fruit Zabaglione:
