Ha - just be sure to remove any evidence of 'creamy spurts':eyebrows:

Btw, am I imagining it or are you having your main meal now during the day, as opposed to the evening? If so, keep it up, and just have a lighter snack at night, as it's much healthier/better for you that way:)

Going to bed on a fairly empty stomach is best. The ideal thing for piling on the pounds, and feeling bloated or sluggish next day, is having big meals late at night [i.e after 9pm], when there's little chance of working it off.

Nice one. Basically it's breaded pork fillet (or in this case veal), pan-fried in butter [for flavour] and olive oil [to ensure a high enough temperature for frying, so that the breadcrumbs brown nicely and seal properly onto the meat]. Del also made her own breadcrumbs from the Polish bread I have for breakfast, which makes quite a difference in terms of flavour.

Lol... It's amazing what a vice and a pair of pliers can do, eh!:D

Shame, though. What age are you mate, 66 or something? That's quite young to have lost most of your teeth. Was it all that good livin' when you were young?;)

Honestly, I've not been to the dentist in about 30 years (as I hate them), and haven't needed to either! Always taken really good care of my teeth with regular brushing. flossing, etc, and always had a good diet [touching on what we were discussing yesterday about kids - my mum was always very fastidious about brushing teeth after every meal and before bed], and been a non-smoker all my life, all of which helps to have healthy gums and teeth.

I broke the front ones.. they got fixed but didnt last for ever alas. mostly front top, and a few top molers.. bottom are ok... I get by and I clean them and use fancy mouthwashes etc. I remember my mum going into hospital and them being amazed she had all her teeth in her 40's. shows how time has changed

Marco

Ah I see, sorry to hear that... Yeah, major advances in dental care have mostly been responsible. My dad's still got a couple of his own teeth left at 86, but his problem is receding gums. I've still got all mine. and they're good and strong.

I know that 54 isn't all that old, but so far I haven't 'fallen apart' like a lot of people my age and much younger!

Whenever abroad if possible we always do McGonads. Once.

This McGonad looked hopeless and nothing like the pics that sold it to us. I was worried. Could it be like Barcelona (clue: fucking terrible)?

Nope. Burger meat was excellent. Brazilian beef, I assume. Much better than we get. Cheese looked like American, but was much cheesier. Bacon not the lame British stuff but genuinely crispy.

As good as a Five Guys if not slightly better.

Genuinely surprised.

Chips standard McGonads, though. Five Guys much better.

Shame the menu pics didn't come out well.

Knife and fork! Set left-handed everywhere in Brazil it would seem.

looked it up and its the way... The fork is used in the right hand to shovel up rice, beans, farofa, etc, while the knife spends a lot of its time idle, occasionally coming in to play to nudge a carrot to one side or cut up a bit of steak. In these situations the fork is rotated into a holding position until the left-hand knife has finished its work, at which point the fork reverts to its usual role.

Yes, they are Pangasius catfish, very common in Asia, especially Vietnam and Thailand. A mate of mine used to keep them as aquarium catfish, they can grow to a decent size.

No dude, that absolutely IS pizza. You can live in a land of pretence if you like, but that is top gear.

Cooked in a very high temp oven, using an excellent dough base with tomato sauce and mozerella. It doesn't get more authentic. Bit of ham on top. All options were just one topping. All you need.

The extra virgin olive oil was outstanding and an option we went for and applied ourselves.

As for Copacabana beach, well in the 60s and 70s it was probably very nice looking at some pics in the art museum. Not now. Even the network of shops around its back streets is NOT nice. It isn't really a reason to go to Rio at all. But it has to be checked out.

Today we went to Audiopax, which was recommended by Tom (montesquieu). It's really close to Copacabana beach front. 2 minutes walk to the beach. And also to a classic car show. Why? Raining all day. But it's gonna get hot and dry for the rest of the break.

Lol - it might be what they call "pizza" in Brazil, and authentic on that basis, plus undeniably good (as I take your word for that), but it's not an authentic pizza, dude, based on the Italian version, which originated and was invented in Naples!

The base looks too 'bready' and not done in a proper wood-fired oven [mandatory for creating an authentic pizza], and there's nowhere near enough fresh tomato sauce or (fresh buffalo) mozzarella cheese.

*THIS* is an authentic pizza:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/AmAWaB.jpg

Or a similar example, but bigger picture:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/5FrJqm.jpg

Note the difference!;)

Anyway, I'm not surprised about the olive oil, as they have the right climate and conditions there to produce quality stuff, and it won't have travelled far.

Noted on Copacabana beach. The concrete jungle surrounding it is unfortunately representative of the times we live in. Like you say, it would've been nice to have seen it/been there in the 60s! I also take your point about the network of shops not being "nice".

It may not be 'pretty', in a tourist sense, but that's what makes it REAL, and I love that, as it's where you'll find the locals, which all adds to the colour and vibe of genuine Brazilian life. If we ever visited there, those are the sorts of places we'd be hanging out in:cool:

Plus, before we went, we'd have learned how to speak a few words of Spanish...

Anyway, major respect for finding a hi-fi shop:respect: Was it any good?:)

Marco. No it is pizza. Just because yours looks bigger and a bit puffed up and burnt around the edges does NOT make it any better.

I have eaten loads of pizza in various parts of the world including Italy like many people and made it.

You can't see the underside. It was brilliantly charred from the authentic, elaborate wood fired pizza oven it was made in. It was an inferrno in the room it was made in. So much so my wife had to get out.

All the key ingredients were bang on.

Just leave it at that Marco I don't see a need for an argument. But you are wrong. It tasted amazing, one of the best I have ever eaten, including examples that look very like your photo.

I have noticed you go too much on appearance without any idea of how stuff actually tastes. You simply cannot tell from photos. Consider that without any intended offence.

We need a pizza fight emoticon, LOL.

Marco

It's not an argument, daftee; it's a friendly discussion!

The base is more 'puffed up' in my example because the dough has been kneaded correctly (more air allowed in), thus it has risen properly, which in turn makes the base both lighter and crispier - exactly as an authentic pizza should be, and I say that as an Italian!:ner:

If the one you showed was served in Italy, to a native Italian, they'd chuck it at you, trust me!:D

You're entitled to your opinion dude, but I'm not wrong, so on this occasion we'll just have to agree to disagree:)

Lol - it might not look great to you [probably because you'd prefer a meat topping], but it *is* an authentic Italian pizza (from the north of Italy), which fits as I was in Tuscany. The pizzas down south, from Naples and such like (as I showed an example of earlier), are a bit different. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about here:)

Taste is entirely subjective, but when food is pictured, it either LOOKS authentic or it doesn't.

You need a big nap bone to make potted hough. folk switched to using gelatine as they couldnt get bones etc. Also buthers dont separate the meat by hand which is important to get out all the crap. They just basically mince/chop it and that is so wrong. takes hrs to do it by hand but worth the effort. Still got my hough plates and pan

Interesting... Does it actually taste like REAL shortbread? Most of the bought stuff I've tried has been a plastic poor relation of the real thing (simply too sugary and not rich or buttery enough), and always avoid it so as not to be disappointed.

You know what I mean though... Bought shortbread or tablet (and macaroon bars, one of my all-time favourite things), even fudge, is usually pish, compared with the real McCoy, simply because the stuff that makes it taste good has been skimped on!

I'm exactly the same with all but the very best ice-cream. I'd rather do without, than eat some of the plastic crap out there these days, posing as such, some of which isn't that cheap....

Looks like a nice place Marco, although seems to be aiming for the wedding market. Although our nephew is coming over from the States next year to get married and he might be interested.

Marco
06-09-2019, 15:27
Weddings, as you know Robin, are BIG business for hotels, so country house ones, especially, want a slice of that market. However, if you go there for Sunday lunch or dinner, especially out with of the wedding season, the food is excellent - or at least it was last time I was there.

Check this link, where the dining experience is described: http://www.romancamphotel.co.uk/dining/

Proper fine-dining at its best with traditional white-linen table cloths and silver service. It's particularly nice at Christmas, with all the cosy log fires! And the rooms are traditionally decorated and just beautiful.

That said, it would also be a lovely place to hold a wedding reception, so defo recommend it to your nephew:)

Weddings, as you know Robin, are BIG business for hotels, so country house ones, especially, want a slice of that market. However, if you go there for Sunday lunch or dinner, especially out with of the wedding season, the food is excellent - or at least it was last time I was there.

Proper fine-dining at its best with traditional silver service. It's particularly nice at Christmas, with all the cosy log fires! And the rooms are traditionally decorated and beautiful.

That said, it would also be a lovely place to hold a wedding reception, so defo recommend it to your nephew:)

My son got married 3 years ago, so well aware of the costs of a wedding, but will mention that place to my nephew.

Lol - did you pay for it? I thought all that stuff was in the past. I wouldn't have dreamed of asking my parents to pay. We paid for our wedding ourselves, or rather I did, as I wanted to make it special for Del.

And also to keep certain things a surprise, such as the old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage I arranged to take us from the church to the hotel, where the reception was, arranging for her favourite flowers (white orchids) and a bottle of her favourite vintage champagne (Perrier-Jouet Belle Epoque, as shown below) to be left in our suite, and of course our subsequent honeymoon to Austria.

We didn't go crazy overboard though, like many do today, then as you say, end up divorced 12 months later!!

A friend did a car for the bride. The dress was the most expensive thing tbh. the rest of it probably cost about same as it(rings apart) Cant remember the cost in total but probably £650 covered it all. Even then it was fairly cheaply done without being miserly. Everyone enjoyed it. Good meal.. good buffet and dance..

Thankful no I didn’t pay for all of it although I did contribute, it was a great day even though the prices at the bar were outrageous.

Marco
06-09-2019, 16:14
They always are in these places... Glad you only contributed!

In any case, if you do try the Roman Camp, I hope the food is still as good. I had a simply stunning fillet steak (with beef from Highland cattle) in a whisky and cream sauce, followed by crêpes Suzette, both flambéed at the table, just as was de rigueur with fine-dining, during the 70s (and before), and which you hardly ever see now. I think you have to dress formally for dinner though, although they may have relaxed that rule now.

Plus, the malt whisky selection in the bar was memorable!:eyebrows:

Ah, I thought you were talking about malt whisky! Well, you're in Scotland mate, not Kentucky, so hardly surprising that the selection of Burbon wasn't extensive...;)

I should've thought you'd have had Jack Daniels and Wild Turkey, and that was yet lot! But any good bar in Scotland should have an extensive selection of malts.

I also enjoy bourbon, I started drinking it a number of years ago when we first started visiting the southern States of America. You will usually find a good selection of malts in most decent bars and of course gin now.

I love a good bourbon too, as it's quite different from whisky. Generally richer and more 'intense':)

But, we don't drink many spirits, so aside from malt whiskies, don't keep much of them in the house. The vodka, gin or any other white spirits we have, are strictly used as ingredients for cocktails!

it was an importer on south coast that i dealt with . he got lots of nice stuff in back then that nobody else did. He used to send me a mixed case every now and then of my fav plus anything i'd not tried. Still got a bottle of George Dickel no12 lying there from all those years ago. its nice too, although sippin' whiskey tbh.. needs air but it can be nice... will remember the garnish for next time! The eggs are done in a coddler which is much easier to control when you’re trying to cook and serve 4 different meals! I do sometimes properly poach them but coddling is the easier option and you don’t lose half the white which I sometimes do poaching. Was supposed to be a relatively healthy brunch (no sausage or hash browns or black pudding) but it probably isn’t that healthy but was very tasty!

Haha - totally understood. I just find that the white comes a bit too thick and 'rubbery', for my liking, when coddled. But getting poached eggs right can be tricky.

I like them when they come out like this, and in the poaching process they've been slightly 'quenelled', if you're familiar with that term?

Last night's street food.

That's a flamed pulled beef and caramelized onion burger. The Vulcano.

We thought it might be spicy but they don't really do spicy food here according to the hotel chef. Of course you can get it. But it isn't the norm.

It was very good indeed. That's our burger (or sandwich, really) getting flamed.

As it's Sunday, today for lunch I'm having some chicken-liver pâté with tomato chilli jam and homemade melba toast, to start, followed by Welsh double-lamb cutlets (from our local butcher, which he sources from a farm just up the road), chargrilled on the BBQ (it's a lovely warm, sunny day here, so will be eating al fresco), served with homemade mint sauce (with fresh mint from our garden) various fresh veg and homemade Dauphinoise potatoes.

Lol - is that all you can comment about, hot-tub boy, with all the lovely pics of food here!:ner:

In any case, if used properly, you don't taste the vinegar. Adding it to poaching water just makes the whites firm faster, to prevent them from dispersing in the water. Something that Alex mentioned earlier, in terms of 'losing all the whites'.

The top pick... rib, was the best.

The marinaded salmon was a really refreshing in-between cuts break.

Like meat? South America. Go. It's an order.:D

Oh look more rib... and 'baby beef' - the cut furthest away in the pic.

I am stuffed. Literally.

All the meaty bits look great - defo top notch! How much of that lot did you actually eat?

What's the crumbly yellow stuff in the fifth picture, next to what looks like 'fish fingers', but probably aren't... And the brown and white 'rice ball' thing under the picture of the wine? Was that Prata beer good? I love the bottle!

Marco.

The beer was unknown but a lovely light lager. The bottle next to it was water.

Far more cuts of beef passed our way than you can see. You place a stop go card on your table as the waiters whizz around with various cuts of lamb, beef and pork.

The sides were a guess from a list of 9 options in Brazilian. None of the staff spoke English well enough to tell us what they were.

If your card is on go you get swamped, like dealers feeding an addict.

The yellow stuff was some eggy mix. The brown rectangular things were an excellent spiced chip. Had two lots of those, two lots of onion rings, just masses of meat. Wife couldn't believe how much I got through. Missed desert pics...

In all 400 Reals or £80.

Great choice, Robin! La Lanterna is one of the oldest and best (most authentic) Italian restaurants in Glasgow. What did you have to eat?:)

Two other recommendations for you next time you're in Glasgow, along similar lines:

http://www.osolemio-glasgow.com/

Superb and authentic pizzas there, from a traditional wood-fired oven.

http://lalanternawestend.co.uk/

'Posh', nice setting, but undeniably great food. Their Florentine t-bone steak is to die for.

And, even better and nearer you in Renfrew: http://piccolomondo.co.uk/welcome-to-piccolo-mondo/

Trust me, THAT one is truly top notch!! Check out the vids. The Renfrew one is the original and best. Used to go there in the 70s and 80s.

We have eaten there several times, at one point monthly, we just had the 2 course set menu which is excellent value and I had a couple of glass of red as we were up on the train.
Well aware of the others you mentioned. Lots of good Italian restaurants in Glasgow and curry houses.

Nice one, and indeed - it's one of the things I miss most, as down here it's mostly the complete opposite!

So have you been to the Piccolo Mondo in Renfrew?:)

Btw, I meant to link to La Parmigiana, in Great Western Rd, instead of La Lanterna in the west end, but notice it's closed down now. Sad days, as that was one of the best!

Yes been to Piccolo Mondo but not for a couple years, unfortunately a visit there always involves someone driving. Locally we don’t really have a really restaurant, nothing to standard of those already mentioned.
We have always enjoyed La Lanterna and they now also have a place out in the West End but not eaten there yet.

Marco

Cool... See the edit to my past post, in reference to the west end La Lanterna.

In terms of the Piccolo Mondo though, surely you could get a train to Renfrew just as easy as one to Glasgow?:)

Unfortunately our trains go nowhere near Renfrew, don’t there is even a direct bus service from here.

Marco

Ah I see, isn't there a decent train service from Greenock to Paisley Glimour street? Then it would be ten minutes in a taxi to Renfrew...

However, I know what you mean about having the car up there, with the zero limit on alcohol. It's different down here, where I can share a bottle of wine with Del, over the course of a meal, and not be over the limit. And yes, I've tested myself with a breathalyser.

Same applies with a pint and a half of beer, which I'll enjoy in a country pub, over lunch, and which means we can get about to some nice places without the inconvenience of using public transport, as neither of us are big drinkers - we just like something nice to enjoy with our food!

For the last few years it’s been very simply, I’m either drinking or driving, however for me that was always the case.

So it’s quite nice to take the train to Glasgow and go for lunch and a few glasses of wine, if we are there in evening we usually stay overnight and end up around the Merchant City.

Marco
10-09-2019, 23:19
Yup, I totally get that, and it also sounds like a nice way of doing things.

The Merchant City now is a really cool place, and vastly different compared with how it was 30 years ago or more, when it was a total dive! You certainly wouldn't have felt safe there at night. What are your favourite haunts then in the Merchant City?:)

Btw, as an aside, have you ever been to the Rogano? Del and I always loved going there for lunch, after we'd done some Christmas shopping in Frasers, and I'd treated her to something small but expensive from the Argyll Arcade....;) The food in the Rogano (especially fish and seafood) was always excellent, and we loved the vibe and whole Art Deco thing.

Plus in those days, the shops all down Buchanan St and Argyle St were beautifully decorated, especially Frasers itself, and it all felt really Christmassy. Happy memories!

Another nice place, and one of our old haunts, which I see has been done up now, is The Buttery: http://twofatladiesrestaurant.com/buttery

Not sure if you've been there? Also, if you'd like to try somewhere special, in the now fashionable east end of Glasgow, and which is a bit 'off the wall', try this place in Dennistoun: https://bilsoneleven.co.uk/ Del and I recently went there for dinner, on the recommendation of a friend, and it was superb!

Yes been in the first two but not the one in Dennistoun, but have read good reviews. There are many good restaurants in Glasgow these days, with Finnieston the area to go to these days but I’m too old to be trendy.
If we are going to the Merchant City we will stay overnight at the Fraser Suites which is handy. We like the following:

http://www.theitaliancaffe.co.uk/ Which is Italian tapas

https://www.cafegandolfi.com/ Everything from breakfast to drinks always good

After that we usually just bar hop from the trendy to the traditional like

Excellent choice of venues, Robin. I'm familiar with them all, although haven't been to Cafe Gandolfi in years! I'm intrigued by some of the dishes they're doing now on their 'Classics' menu, all of which have a heavily Scottish influence!

I'll defo be heading there next time I'm up... Btw, in terms of pubs and food having a major Scottish influence, we also love going to Babbity Bowster: http://babbitybowster.com/ Love the vibe in there, especially when you walk in and there's a load of fiddlers playing, and perhaps a wee sing-song!:)

Great selection of malts, too.....

Also, at the other end of the scale, if you fancy treating the missus to a lovely meal and overnight stay, for a special occasion, I'd thoroughly recommend the Hotel du Vin/Bistro, formally known as 'One Devonshire Gardens': https://www.hotelduvin.com/locations/glasgow/bistro/

I took Del there for our 15th wedding anniversary (before it became the Hotel du Vin, and even before Gordon Ramsey ran the restaurant there), and it was simply stunning. Tina Turner, who was playing in Glasgow at the time, had vacated our suite the night before... Despite hunting high and low, however, we failed to find anything 'interesting'!!:eyebrows:

It's also great if you just fancy a nice lunch: https://www.hotelduvin.com/locations/glasgow/bistro/lunch/

Strangely I passed Babbity yesterday as we were coming down from the Glasgow Royal, not been in there for several years.

Hotel du Vin is a great choice and then you can enjoy all the places in the West End, including the “Chip”, still after all these years.

Marco
11-09-2019, 12:55
Yup, there are also some great places in the west end, especially down the lanes, although unless it's changed now, I've always been rather disappointed in the Chip - more a triumph of style over substance, and sometimes not even that, complete with an incompatible price tag!

They started to get lazy when executives from the BBC went there on expense accounts. However, I've not been for years, so it may well have changed.

No16 is rather good though: http://www.number16.co.uk/

And Mother India has always been great for a curry!

Marco.

P.S Defo swing by Babbity's next time you're in the area, as you'll love it.

Btw, Robin, next time you're at Ibrox, since you appear to love Italian food, if you don't know of it already, check out this place (for authentic and very unpretentious Italian food): http://www.bellavitaglasgow.co.uk/

You could always pop along, after you've been with the boys to the Louden Tavern!:D

Also, Bella Fresca, on Paisley Rd West, is a great place for top-notch coffee and snacks, plus they sell quality Italian produce, which you can buy, great pasta dishes, too: https://www.bellafresca.co.uk/

When we used to live down the road in Ralston, it had only recently opened and was just a deli, and we used to get all our fresh bread and antipasti from there. Got to know the boss well:)
