Angine de Poitrine were guests on yesterday's 'Later...with Jules Holland'. Whilst being largely unimpressed by their playing, I did appreciate them as a performance act.

The first thing you notice is their distinctive, fantastic-looking costumes; either back with white dots, or white with black dots. I was impressed by the continuation of the dot motif to the performer's hands and feet, with the black/white dot pattern being complimentary to that of their costumes.

I also worked out how the drummer could see whilst wearing his costume. It turns out that the shoulders of the costume do not correspond with the drummers shoulders, they are higher so the drummer can see out through the 'mouth' of the costume. This was confirmed when the drummer stretched out his arms sideways.

I have an annoying habit of becoming obsessed with unimportant details such as the above. So whilst unimpressed by their sound, I am impressed by their imaginative look.

If you get what they are doing, Microtonal playing, then they are very impressive players. You might not like their music but they are still incredibly talented.

If you get what they are doing, Microtonal playing, then they are very impressive players. You might not like their music but they are still incredibly talented.

I'm not denying their talent or originality, I just don't like the sound. I have heard quite a bit of microtonal music: India sitar ragas, Indonesian Gamelan etc., and I like what I heard; indeed I have many CDs of such music. If Angine de Poitrine's style is described as Math Rock, then so be it, but I don't really like it - I'm bored by it. But it would be a dull old world if we all liked the same thing.

Excellent debut album. Her second album 'Sons and Lovers' was somewhat of a disappointment, so I didn't follow her subsequent career. The film "Breaking Glass" is well worth watching though.

I knew her as a kid back in Norwich, and loved her early stuff but I’m not sure about this one…. Her voice has changed/aged a lot, and the songs aren’t really pulling me in, but will persevere!

Until I play them, I can't remember which CDs/Tracks are Melody Gardot or are they Madeleine Peyroux? I appear to have 4 Madeleine and 3 Melody CDs, but can't remember the last time I played either - added to the list to spin later!

Oops! 'Careless Love; was Medeleine Peyroux's second CD. Her first was 'Dreamland', released in 1996.

Nowt wrong with a bit of Faith No More - saw them in the early 90s at Glasgow Barrowlands, supported by L7. That was an interesting night :)

I didn’t buy this at the time, I think it was Amplified Heart 10 years later (because of the Todd Terry remix of Missing) that got me into them, and I was expecting much more electronica, but as the years have rolled on I probably enjoy the early stuff just as much if not more than the later electronic biased music. Anyway, perfect for a Sunday.

I can remember years ago when I used to visit audio shows in London, I looked in one room where they were demonstrating some electrostatic speakers. No idea what that room was about, I didn't make a note, maybe Martin knows. And I don't know how they were getting away with playing them so loud, we could still hear them 3 rooms away, over other exhibitors' stuff. I doubt they were flogging anything vinyl-related, none of that would have coped with such extreme SPLs in that tiny room.

And that is exactly why they chose to use it. Though another room there having a bird singing while accompanied by two sticks banging together to showcase £55k speakers wasn't going to win many fans.

Then again there was one room where they played Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love. Now we all like a bit of Led Zep, but Whole Lotta Love? On a set up costing tens of thousands? It gave me nothing my modest home system couldn't provide. Akin to test driving a Lamborghini Aventador shod with 50 year old cross-ply tyres.

There is a compromise which could be but wasn't used - pretty much anything produced in the 80s, good tunes well recorded. Stuff we're all familiar with, to make fair comparisons.

What often happens at these shows is that I hear something I like enough to investigate what that tune was, I've bought a lot of music over the years that way, and there wasn't much evidence of that this year. But, I'll still be back there again in 2027 :)

Space Lines will surprise with it's diversity, but if you know Sonic Boom / Spacemen 3 it will start to make sense and is really enlightening. I wish more bands would do a similar thing.

That's interesting, whilst I think 'Abbey Road' is good, the White Album is my least favourite. To me they should have condensed it down to a single LP. Likewise with 'Let it Be', there are only two or three tracks on it that I like (I'm playing it now, just to remind myself).

My partner has a flat in London and every time we go down Abbey Road, regardless of the weather or time of year, there are always a group of visitors either photographing themselves in front of the Studio, or unsuccessfully trying to cross the road via the zebra crossing!

I don't think I have a favourite Beatles album, none of them would make my Top 50, or even 500 :sofa: (But it would be between Abbey Road, White album, Rubber Soul, Revolver & Sgt Pepper - though I do have a soft spot for Yellow Submarine!)

Meanhwile, continuing to revisit my physical CD collection, and am finding that there are hundreds I have not got ripped to FLAC! Plenty I don't even remember/recognise, or remember buying or acquiring. Including this one.

'De-Constructing Ghosts' is an experimental re-mix album, released under the name of 'Galahad Electric Company' in 1999, whereby samples of guitar, keyboard, drum, bass and vocal tracks etc were taken from multi track recordings for 'Following Ghosts' and given to various other musicians and DJ's who then constructed their versions of tracks from 'Following Ghosts' or in some cases created brand new tracks using the samples that they were given, hence the name of the album.

Another album I had completely forgotten about, though at least I still remember this one! It’s a great Drum and Bass album, played it a lot back in the day when I had a DnB phase. That was before Wikipedia - I was today years old when I learned that Adam Fenton is the son of Alvin Stardust, the nephew of Rory Storm and married to Kirsty Hawkshaw! Every day’s a school day!

I do try to listen to some of the recordings you and others mention, and am always open to new sounds.

Most of the time I use my smartphone when I'm on the Forum. Clearly the acoustics are somewhat limited and it is not the best way to listen to any new music: it is probably the reason why some of my comments have been less than favourable and dismissive. In future I will have to connect my laptop to my audio system via a USB to my DAC, and listen to music on-line properly. :)

Same here. If I get halfway through an Album, it's probably OK. If I listen all the way through, I'll probably like it.

"Becoming X" is a great album, but I never followed them past that. Just as well by the looks of it. I think it'd be better to follow Kelli Ali's career than Sneaker Pimps'.

I would say this is a bit hit and miss, too - need a proper listen or two, but overall I was pleasantly surprised.

Sienna Spiro - Visitor (2026)

I posted one of her EPs a couple of weeks ago, this is her debut album released on Friday. It’s very good, not sure she had a USP though against so many other similarly gifted females artists (Olivia Dean, Laufey especially, and her voice is very much Adele in places, no bad thing I guess.) Will need a few more plays, and seeing her live next March so plenty of time.

New Speaker Day! well new to me anyway. They've spent two weeks in the back of my van while I agonised over what to do about the yet-to-be outgoing speakers and all the new oversize packaging. So that's 14 days of up and down the M6, over countless potholes, all the while they've had to share vanspace with all my tools. There's been a dark thought that's niggled at the back of my mind, whether or not they'll come out of this ordeal intact. I won't know until I get them unpacked. A bit like Schrodinger's cat.

I needn't have worried, they were fine. But I had a scary hour or two unboxing, assembling footers and spikes, and walking them into position.

Worth it? Definitely. More 'sparkle' at the top end, smoother mids, deeper but faster more tuneful bass. All the usual hifi cliches present and correct :) Better in all the key areas than the outgoing speakers, but I wouldn't say the difference is 'night and day', more night and dawn. I suppose that's how it is with diminishing returns.

And that's it for a few more years, my next 'upgrade' will probably be my listening room. And maybe a hearing aid.

This has been a favourite of mine for years, but there is a particular sound on the first and last songs which almost ruined it for me. Well now, it's still present and still an irritating squawk, but not fingernails-down-blackboard bad. The last song (Horse Tears) is just beautiful, and no longer marred by that horrible artefact. Happy bunny :)

Got it a few years back for a couple of quid. I only knew of them due to Noel Keywood using them as one of his test recordings although I think that was 'Ride A White Horse' which isn't on this album. But for £2 thought I'd give it a go.

Listened to it a few times now and have to say it's not really growing on me but it's not terrible.
