Bought this when it first came out, complete with bonus 7" single, and been after it again for ages. But vinyl copies complete with single are silly money.
So got it on CD (includes bonus tracks!) off Music Magpie for £4.83. Now they want nearly 18 quid for the same CD. So I timed that well :)

Always enjoyed the segue between 'The Power And The Glory' and 'The Rocks Remain' but this didn't happen on the Tidal version??

Old CDs are getting more expensive than many folks might think. I'm not talking about the mainstream chart releases from '90s and 00's that you find piles of in charity shops, but CDs from bands that had a serious fan base back in the day whether punk, heavy metal, rap, electronic... I was looking for one of the Black Sabbath albums on eBay and Discogs the other day and the cheapest was £18.

Much worse with vinyl... From time to time I find myself looking for a vinyl copy of sabbath's first album, and it's never cheap. But check out this one, properly taking the piss (and they have the cheek to charge for posting!) I expect by Christmas this and others in the catalogue will be reissued to cash in on the sudden renewed interest, so someone can get it me off the Amazon.

Which one?
Most I have paid for a CD is a bit over £30 for The Godfathers 'Hit By Hit.' Had to get it from USA. Much cheaper on vinyl but I already have it on vinyl.

Which one?
Headless Cross. I'm after one of the '80s originals (not a more recent compressed-to-death 'remaster'). Discogs shows 13 different versions were released so you'd think there'd be a good chance, but none of the listings has anything under £20 at the minute and eBay's cheapest is currently £21 inc post.

“One the thing the Pat Metheny Group has always been known for is being able to pull off everything it can do on record in front of a live audience. THE ROAD TO YOU captures PMG on a European tour playing for ecstatic fans that even sing along to the guitarist’s enchanting melodies.
For their enthusiasm they are treated to explosive performances of many of Metheny’s best works. Longtime members Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, and Paul Wertico and multi-instrumentalists Armando Marsal and Pedro Aznar round out the group. All of the group’s “hits” are here, including the blistering “Have You Heard,” which opens the show with a first-of-many jaw-dropping solos by the leader.
The dramatic “First Circle” makes for an exciting live piece as Aznar’s vocal work and May’s delicate piano styling offer many pleasing moments. The crowd erupts at the first notes of the favorite “Last Train Home,” long a Metheny chestnut. The grandest moments, however, come with the exhilarating “Beat 70” and the stunning closer “Third Wind.” Also included are some new compositions like the eclectic “Half Life of Absolution” and Metheny’s tender acoustic piece “Solo” from ‘More Travels’.

Never could get on with Pat Metheny. All my guitar-playing colleagues rated him highly and would quite often loan me some of his LPs, but sadly to no avail.

I only really like his 'early' period as that was my era; he's done a lot of albums now, lots of different styles.

It’s been a long, long time since I've got as lost in an Album as I have this one, tonight. Wonderful.
Its been a long, long time since I've got as lost in an Album as I have this one, tonight. Wonderful.
Those occasions are few and far between, but when they do happen are joyously memorable.
For me, they can occur when you are tired and listen with your eyes closed - not asleep, but with all distractions removed. When the record or disc has finished you think "that was great, I'll play it again", but the deep experience never repeats itself.

I love Shirley Collins voice, but her diction, both on the LP and on the CD is poor. Shame, as the words of these English folk songs are important.

I used to have Baduism, but my daughter "borrowed" it. Nice to know I'm down with the kids I suppose :)

IMO cassette players by either Philips, Sony or Nakamichi were the only ones that could make audio cassettes a viable option.

Even then, it's very much dependant on the tape and it's recording quality, more so than for any other media. I'm talking pre-recorded tapes here.

First decent LP the Beatles made IMO.
1978 effort from Moore, probably my favourite of his solo albums although like all of them, it's uneven in song quality.

I gave my copy away. I know they have quite a following though.
And Beth Gibbons hasn't improved with age - she was at Glastonbury this year, and five minutes in I was losing the will to live. Fortunately I was watching it on iPlayer so I could fast forward to something more upbeat...
Funny how we are all different (and long may that continue) but I love Portishead, though I do accept dreary as a description! I have to be in the right mood, but it is the music rather than Beths voice that draws me in.

Not a Portishead fan either and I've never knowingly heard a Beth Gibbons track.
Wow, not heard such negativity for Portishead, always thought this one was a bit of a classic. Not cheery I'll grant, but as has been said, each to their own eh.
Maybe this one will jazz you up a bit...

1984 CD release - since found out that it is the supposedly rare Steve Hoffman mastering, only 5000 were pressed and 4000 recalled.
It has the correct barcode number and MCA catalogue number anyway. The 'official' 1984 release was mastered by Roger Nicholls.
''According to Nichols and ICE magazine, in either 1981 or 1982, Nichols transferred all of the Steely Dan master tapes to Scotch 3M digital tape, with the intention that these digital flat transfers, not the original analog masters (which Nichols later said “were in terrible shape, due to improper storage, and had poor fidelity”), would be used for subsequent CD releases. (Notably, the master tape for the b-side of Aja could not be found, and a tape copy was used for the digital transfer.) ''
''According to mastering engineer Steve Hoffman, when it came time to master Aja for its first CD release, Hoffman mastered it at Bruce Botnick’s Digital Magnetics studio in Hollywood from the original analog tape, not Nichols’s digital transfer.
According to Hoffman, the Aja master tape “sounded quite dull” and had a “midrange suckout problem,” which he attributed to it being mixed on horn speakers that exaggerated the midrange. So, Hoffman’s mastering “fill[ed] in the midrange hole” by boosting the mids a bit, but was otherwise a flat transfer of the analog master.''

I have Aja on vinyl - sounds OK to me. :)
Some Scotch 3M tape has since been discovered to have deteriorated badly ("sticky-shed" syndrome), so I don't know what they would use for future remasters etc.

The beauty of digital is that it's an exact copy. There's no distinction between the CD and the master it is made from.
Agreed - but what is the master stored on?
Agreed - but what is the master stored on?
There's at least 7 different masters according to the article I linked to. All are now on CD, SACD or streaming. So multiple formats and servers.
