I do have one of theirs on vinyl, I think it's their second album, the one with "Pick up the Pieces". Not what you expect a white Scottish band to sound like :) There's a lot on this one Barry, double CD with 35 tracks. I got it at a car boot sale a few years ago, so I won't have paid more than a quid. Can be had for a fiver on Ebay.

Hi Steve, I have a uk 1980 copy, very thin vinyl, as many were then. I have just done a short comparison of the two, the 1980 version, to my ears has a bit more energy, the half speed master has a bit more depth to the sound but not huge differences between the two. I only bought the new version as it was on offer on Amazon France. I have a few other Half speed masters, in general if you have a good, clean original it will be hard to beat. I really should do more comparisons. In many cases. It will also be down to who has done the mastering, one of the reasons I have a few “audiophile “ copies of my favourite records.

While the mastering quality and dynamic range, as well as several 'hifi' atributes may be measurable and beyond dispute, it won't be a 'one size fits all'. Everyone's hearing and priorities differ, and certain albums will will play better to a particular system's strengths better than others.

Of the list I would be interested in the Pat Metheny, Donald Fagen and Hans Zimmer ones, and Yello 'Point has been on my radar for some time. I already have seven of the albums listed, not all of which get much play - good SQ is of no consequence if the music doesn't do it for you.

One I've had for about 15 years, and never gave it a fair crack - I think maybe I should now. There was another album came out at the same time called 'Black Light', which I never got round to buying. My assumption was it was probably similar but darker. Maybe the title made me think that.

On a level playing field vinyl inherently has much less dynamic range.

AHM and Meddle both come from a stylistically similar PF place, whereas musically WYWH is quite different, far more guitar driven, so maybe a bit odd to compare them, although they all definitely have that PF feel to them.

I see on that list that Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" was rated fifth best... then I saw this:

It is a qualitative rating, not a quantitative figure - in much the same way as the reception strength bars are on a smartphone.

I first discovered this Welsh indie-pop outfit when they supported Tina Dico at Union Chapel in London in 2013 (I think), along with Tim, formerly of this parish. As soon as I heard Sarah Howell's voice I was captivated, I don't know how to describe it but I remember saying to Tim at the time that she makes me "ache" - and I mean that in a good way! Saw them a couple of times thereafter on their own tours, and always brilliant and happy to chat to the fans. I remember having a drink with them at Norwich Arts Centre, one of my favourite venues where I also saw Tina and it was magnificent, but I digress.

This is their first album, sadly they split in 2015, although Sarah still makes music under the name Bryde, also worth checking out, but not quite as boppy and cheerful as this one! She has also collaborated on a considerable number of dance tunes.

For some reason I can't quote tonight. Barry, re. Röyksopp: To be honest, I would say Melody A.M. is the best of their albums I have, but I only have up to 2010 although there is quite a few on Spotify/Tidal up to now. Of the ones I know well, Junior from 2009 is pretty good and has some great guest female vocalists (Robyn, Anneli Drecker, Lykke Li) and is fairly accessible. Some of the later stuff I have streamed over the years was a bit more full on from memory. I will have to revisit and report back!

EROS are one of those bands that I’ve known for years, play rarely and forget how good they are. A Heavy Industrial EDM band, they feature members of MY DISCO, Einstürzende Neubauten and y’man Regis, so what’s not to like ?

I'll never understand how these things work - I used to take images from Ebay for 'Spinning today...' posts, but for some reason they never showed on Martin's device, while as far as I know they did for everyone else. Which is why I only use Discogs or Amazon.

I'll have to take your word for that, I couldn't afford to go into hi-fi shops in the 80's. I just used to stand outside with my nose pushed up to the glass lusting after the Planar 3 in the window. Another one I haven't played in a long, long time - and I often discover I have just one album in my collection from a certain artist like on this occasion, but none of their others. I probably read a review of it back in the day and took a punt. It's a great album, so I think I should try some of their others - I guess that's where streaming comes in. :)

You may (or may not) remember the single Mouth, which is on here, and also some other jolly songs from this Australian singer-songwriter, and a rather splendid acoustic version of the Pet Shop Boys Being Boring. The 1998 follow up album "Between the Days" features the rather unlikely collaboration on "I Got U Babe" with Shaggy!

According to Wikipedia, "In 2003 an untitled album was produced which remains unreleased. The album was due out in 2004, but then she realised that the tour would separate her from her family and left the music business." And that was that, never to be heard of again. We can only guess what unexpected cover version or crazy collaboration was on that third album!

I've worn out a lot of my original Gary Numan vinyl, as with a lot of my mid - late 80's stuff. Much of it I have been able to replace with good original copies but some, due to either availability or price constraints, has had to be re-releases. This is one of they.

Never really got on with Gary Neuman. Used to have 'The Pleasure Principle', but found myself not listening to it much so gave it away.

I do have a copy of 'Savage', picked up cheap from a charity shop, which is more interesting; though I dislike the OTT, over-large, near DVD sized packaging, which makes is difficult to file. :doh:

That's one I haven't played in a few decades... it may be one of a small batch which got a bit mouldy due to storage in a damp place years ago. I'll dig it out to check.

Edit: just checked, and it's absolutely fine :) I'll give it a go later this week, I can't remember what it's like.

Yes, "In a Lifetime" is a great track. I am a U2 fan, well, their music, Bono has come across as a bit of a knob at various points, but he has done some interesting collaborations, which segues nicely into this:

They're very good, just not technically very good. Nothing quite like them for visceral impact and presence.

I have too. Nobody expects accurate representation (they can be made an awful lot better, rather good even) but they can't be beaten for what they do.

You're not the only one. Have a look on Reddit to read the opinions of those from both camps.

Myself, I think it is one of the most important records of the mid '60s: not just for the arrangements, unusual choice of instruments, superb vocal harmonies, but for the introspective lyrics which express the doubts and uncertainties most of us go through during adolescence.

They did some great songs, stuff you have to sing along to (badly) :) But both my Kinks albums are 'best ofs', I've never heard what their non-hit songs are like.

Interesting - I saw them in 1990 at Maine Road Manchester, it was called the Urban Jungle tour, which I imagine was the same set.
