If I knew the answer to that myself Mike, life might be a little simpler!

Very eclectic, constantly moving and I go through phases, I'm in a jazz phase at the moment I guess - the only constant I would say is it's rarely mainstream. I saw the Kneecap movie recently and that really opened my eyes to rap and hip hop, as did Straight Outta Compton, both outstanding films. Previously I avoided rap and hip hop, because I didn't understand it - I still don't totally, but I'm learning to respect it.

I'll give it a go later if I can find it, thanks :)

Perfect answer. I've tried Jazz and the only stuff that appeals is well, well leftfield. No classical, no Funk/ Jazzfunk, no "Pop", no "middle of the road, whatever that is", no Choral etc. Give REN a try, he's a really interesting dude.

The title track Stateside is 2 minutes of pure instrumental genius and a great test track.

Stumbled across the track "Dance of the Gecko" on Radio Paradise, haven't listened to any Howe Gelb stuff for years, this is really good, with production by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Eels, Tracy Chapman to name but 3).

"Geckøs is an indie-folk supergroup formed by acclaimed songwriter M. Ward, desert rock pioneer Howe Gelb (Giant Sand), and Irish multi-instrumentalist McKowski (The Lost Brothers). Born from a spontaneous recording session at a mutual friend's wedding, the trio creates a "transatlantic" sound that blends Southwestern Americana with Spanish guitar and Irish mysticism."

Public Enemy from back then was pretty good too ("It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back" is one I have), though really I prefer the more mellow positive vibe of A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul. Less gangsta.

My favourite rapper would have to be Q-Tip who, apart from his band Tribe Called Quest, contributed on Chemical Brothers' "Galvanise" and "Go", and Deee Lite's "Groove is in the Heart".

Certainly a great deck, Mike! I can see why you wouldn't want to part with it. I only ever really used mine to make compilation tapes for the car back in the 80's. Most of them ended with "Happy Hour" by The Housemartins - it was the shortest single I knew and I always managed to fit it on the last bit of tape on the spool!

Excellent recording, the production is very 80s to my ears, lots of keyboard going on. According to Wikipedia, in a 2023 interview with Vulture (an American entertainment website apparently), he was so determined to be the support act For Talking Heads, he started writing more oblique pieces of music, embracing new studio techniques... seems he had a bit of a thing for David Byrne.

Reading between the lines it looks like he is not that keen on this album. Never mind, I've decided I do quite like it :) Even though the album art looks like it was designed by the bloke who invented shell suits.

I've seen it for sale second hand lots of times but never really thought of them as a live band even though I've seen them live a couple of times.

I might pick it up if it's still in the shop next time I go. I don't mind live albums that are stitched together, I mean Sinatra 'Live at the Sands' is the greatest live album ever and that's put together from different shows.

Another new discovery, collaboration between Fineas (big brother and producer to Billie Eilish as well as accomplished solo artist, and Ashe, who has a lovely voice.). Hard to pin down the style but I really like it - reviews suggest a 70’s pop/folk-rock, it does have that vibe, a sort of less rocky Rumours feel. Nicely produced, too.

Yes, I played it on Friday but didn’t listen properly like I am now - definitely a bit good! A lot of her later albums have never quite clicked with me like her earlier ones did, this one definitely has though. (Will have to revisit some of those.)

Sound quality on this new one is awesome too, great production.

Saw her at the Norwich Arts Centre in February 1992 - quite by chance, really, but that’s what got me into her - don’t suppose there’s any likelihood she’ll be playing there again! (Unfortunately!)

I’m the same as you, Tim, I loved her earlier stuff but my interest dwindled with the later releases, I agree this one is a return to form (although scanning a few online reviews not everyone agrees - do they ever?!)

No, I think that ship has sailed for sure! Last time I saw her was during a sold out run at the Hammersmith Apollo - an extraordinary performance.

Haha, yeah the new fans won't like it because it's more like the old stuff, the older fans like it because it is and that's before you touch on the politics. There will be a lot of American fans who really won't like that!

Anyway, those that don't like it, go play something else - as for me, I think it's great :)

Stumbled across this whilst looking for a review of another album - not the sort of thing that usually floats my boat but one of a handful of albums I can’t stop playing this week.

“My New Band Believe is the avant-garde, experimental chamber folk project spearheaded by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Picton, the former bassist and vocalist of the acclaimed English rock band Black Midi.”

I don’t really know how to describe it, have no idea what “avant-garde experimental chamber folk” music is, but this is rather strangely compelling for reasons I can’t really explain, especially the stories of the songs. Like nothing I would normally listen to, (and having tried his former band Black Midi I won’t be revisiting that back catalogue) so I’ll file this under mysterious.

The '80s to me seemed to be dominated by ephemeral pop groups which despite having imaginative names such as: Aztec Camera; Cabaret Voltaire; Altered Images; Duran Duran; Culture Club, etc. only produced a couple of decent songs that lasted.

There were however some good post-punk bands of the '80s such as: The Police; U2 and the Cure.

Had a re-think about this - actually my interest in music around that time didn't need reviving, it was preceded by some great albums from Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Peter Gabriel, Joe Jackson, The The, XTC, UB40, Sade...

If you like the Stranglers you'll love this :) Though I only got this a few months ago. I got it on vinyl when it came out in about 1978, including the bonus 7" single which came with the first 500 copies. No idea where it went.

But this CD comes with those extra tracks, including their version of Walk on By (best version by anyone ever) :)

I think when I first got it I was perhaps hoping for a Mezzanine pt.2 (which it definitely isn't). But playing it this morning at lowish volume was a perfect start to the day :) Cheers for putting it in my head.

The Anine Remix album is like rocking horse poo, I just got lucky at a car boot sale a few years ago. It is not an official release, a bootleg really, so no official outlets (and Discogs won't even re-sell it). Having said that I don't think it's much cop. Nothing like as good as "NO Protection" Mad Professor thing.

Anyway, while I'm in the mood, this next:

I don’t really know Bluegrass, but found this album on tidal, and it’s rather jolly! A virtuoso Mandolin player, plus she has a nice voice. Very enjoyable.

Yeah, could be a mission :lol: It's actually a highly rated, well known compilation, if you're into 60'S Psych / Garage / Freakbeat Alex. Lots of rare and obscure tracks on it. Every bit as good as the Nuggets compilations, imo.

Edit: CD13 - Freak Beat Fantoms is a pretty good snapshot of what you get.
