Many years ago, my youngest son, aged what, 14 or 15 bought this for me, from a charity shop, out of his pocket money; "I thought you'd like this Dad".
Aside from bringing a tear to my eye every time I listen to it, just take a look at that track listing. Incredible.
Wow, that is a great selection and an even better back story! A few on there I don’t know from the titles but some fabulous tracks I’ve not heard in years. Might have to see if I can assemble a Tidal playlist to mirror that!
When I was first dating Sue in 2003 we were having a record night and I was putting on songs she liked. She tried to describe a song she remembered when she was about 3 or 4 that her auntie used to play over and over again - about the best she could manage was she remembered it had a sort of “whoop” vocal in it. Her jaw dropped when I said “Althea and Donna?” Then pulled a 7” single out and played Uptown Top Ranking!

I've got to hand it to you Alex, getting to Uptown Top Ranking (great track) from "it had a sort of "whoop" vocal in it" is beyond me. No wonder you ended up together, I certainly couldn't have done that !
I remember Althea and Donna's 'Uptown Top Ranking' with the "Oop", But if someone had asked what was the song with an 'oop' in it , I wouldn't have been able to suggest anything.
Well done Alex - great story.
And yet she thinks Pink Floyd is a racket!
The sad thing is I even knew that it was a green coloured label which made it easier to find (my 7” singles for some reason have never been filed alphabetically) although I did drop a point as I didn’t remember it was on Lightning! (Interestingly, just checked on eBay and it is spelled “Althia” not “Althea” on the record label itself).
Amazingly all those tracks were on Tidal so playlist created and I will give it a whirl tomorrow.
Anyway, this one’s near the end and the close of the night and bed time!

I'm surprised K-Tel never released a "Best of Ronco" :)
The K-Tel records always looked like good vfm because you got so much music squeezed onto a single disc - probably not the best idea for sound quality, but to release them as double albums would have defeated their budget objective.
They followed on from the old "Top of the Pops" compilations, which didn't use original artists and were frankly dire, although the cover art was always something for dads and teenage boys... a sign of the times, like the Big D Peanuts displays you'd get in pubs where you'd find a scantily clad model lurking behind the bags :)
Sorry that was quite some thread drift.

Yet another, Top 50 Album, for me.
Yes, it's an absolute belter - Ghosts has to be one of my favourite tracks ever. It always reminds me of baked beans, though... I shall explain!
I have great memories of playing it at a girl's house in the complete dark around 1986. We'll call her "Sophie" - well, because that was indeed her name. Aside from listening to music in the dark, Sophie always said she wanted to have sex in a bath full of baked beans.
This never happened - I mean, aside from the logistics of it, there's the cost - and I was an office junior at the time! How many tins of baked beans would it take to fill a bath? And then what the heck do you do with them afterwards, how do you get them out, a large spoon and a wheelbarrow?
Anyway, Sophie decided to kid all my friends that we had indeed "done it" in a bath full of baked beans... I am sure they didn't believe her, but I went along with the story, and as far as I know, they still think it happened!
We lost touch (not because of her baked bean fetish!) and it wasn't until a few years ago that she messaged me via social media as she had found a couple of photos of me from the time. She went on to become an RE Teacher, and is now a grandmother! I have no idea if her baked bean kink has ever been fulfilled, or if she moved on to Alphabetti Spaghetti or indeed any other of the 57 varieties!

Mike’s “To 50 albums” comment got me thinking - could I compile a top 50 list of albums? Not sure I could, but this one would almost certainly be in mine, I very much doubt it is anyone else’s cup of tea, though…

I will undoubtedly have posted this before, because I just find it incredible that a Norwegian teenager could have written this in her bedroom when English isn’t her first language, and she only picked up a guitar aged 15 and quickly started writing this album. Yes, definitely in my 50…. For now!
. . . could I compile a top 50 list of albums?
I could compile a top 50 list of albums, easy peasy - only trouble is, each day it would be different!
Well, that album was as brilliant as always, the last track “A Place Nearby” gets me in the feels (as the kids say) every time.
Let’s cheer things up a bit with some of Mike’s Magic Reggae!

Where did you find Alex's post referring to his supposed having sex in a bath of baked beans? Must be an example of AoS's notorious thead drift, but I would still like to know where it was posted - obviously not here!

#4024 was Steve's reply to your post. What interests me is where was your original post, referring to a track 'Ghosts' which makes you think of baked beans.
This is not the first time that I haven't been able to find the original post which has prompted a reply.
(I think you ought to change your "I'm" signature from involvement with lilac curtains to involvement with baked beans! :D )
Well on my devices #4024 is my original post, Steve’s reply is #4030 - no idea why we are seeing them differently!
Good point on the “lilac curtains” although that was Marco’s work, not sure I can change it myself. (Nearly 7 years since we had the lilac curtains!)

Very strange. On my laptop Alex's post was #4018, my reply was #4024! No idea what's going on here
From now on the cover of Japan's "Tin Drum" album will make me think of Alex eating baked beans with chop sticks, while pondering what could have been with Sophie, who looks remarkably like Mao Zedung :)

Tina Turner - Private Dancer
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260603/f899dc9790ff16744b6ef4b671cfcf4e.jpg
Another anecdote alert: about 11 or 12 years ago when Tamzin was 5 or 6 I introduced her to my vinyl albums, and for some reason she loved Tina Turner, and this one in particular. One morning she came running into the room “Daddy, Tina Turner’s cat is in our garden!” And it was! (Well if it wasn’t, I couldn’t tell the difference either.)
I actually can’t time travel back to 1984 without including this one.
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Junk Culture (1984)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260603/800795c56961481b059e275b1b853244.jpg
This album holds a unique honour in my collection - it is the only one I have bought new in 3 different formats. Originally I bought it on cassette - possibly the only album I have ever bought when it came out on tape, for the sole reason that we were about to go on a school geography trip for a week to the Lake District.
Even then I couldn’t face the thought of a week without music! I couldn’t afford a Sony Walkman so made do with a Sansui knock off and bought this album. I also made some copies of other albums and compilations using my dad’s Ferguson sound system, so looking back I don’t know why I didn’t buy it on vinyl and copy it, but there you go.
I did subsequently acquire a vinyl copy, and then when I finally accepted CDs were “the future” this was one of the hundreds of albums that got an “upgrade”.
The school trip to the Lakes was fairly uneventful except I was the one who was picked to go into an off licence in Kendal to buy Woodpecker cider and fags as I looked one of the oldest of our motley crew of 15 year olds. Illicit goods were acquired without a hitch or question, and maybe my heroics was what attracted Amanda to me, who I subsequently “got off” with - but don’t worry, no baked beans or other canned goods were harmed in the making of that brief relationship!
Looks like I’m ending with another from 1984.

I think it was Mike Reid who spearheaded the BBC ban on it? Crazy thinking back now that it was thought to be offensive at the time. I too have the 7” single but also the 12” and Two Tribes on 12” - which I remember was epic. I must find time over the weekend to give that a spin on the vinyl rig.

'Relax' did in fact reach number 1, but I can't remember what the BBC did about it. 'Two Tribes' was another good track.

Pretty much anything DM release I am all over it, but there are a few of the albums I’ve not been mad on - this must be one of them, ‘cos I can’t remember the last time I played it, and apart from a couple of tracks a lot of it is unfamiliar. It’s not bad, but it’s no Violator, although I think that’s what they were trying to do here.

I have played this several times now, and am really liking it, strangely for an album by a female Australian singer-songwriter it does remind me of Depeche Mode and also OMD in places in the instrumentation. Some of the songs are a bit repetitive, but overall a solid album and definitely in my top 10 of the year so far. I can’t imagine it will be anyone else’s cup of char in here, though!

Now playing "Magic Reggae".
Thanks to Mike for bringing the LP to my/our attention. I immediately bought a copy from eBay, and it arrived today. In near mint condition , it is the best £6's worth I have had in a long time. :)
Thanks again Mike.
You did well there Barry - I had a look on Ebay, and even ropey examples were going for a lot more than that.

Didn’t spot this last night that you joined in with 1984! Fabulous album, crap (but somehow compelling) film!
Was going to play Erika Badu as Steve & Barry reminded me of her (still might) but hit on another Erika first. (Not “hit on her” as in “hi Erika, do you like baked beans and Kendal Mint Cake?” - you know what I mean! )

Described on Tidal as “a sensual mix of pop and R&B” but it’s more than that. One Bandcamp comment is much more accurate - “Erika’s voice purrs and prowls about the mind, slicing through the haze of dreamy downtempo beats and lush, brooding chords.” Nice.

Yes, Trevor Horn has done some amazing stuff in his time. In fact this one is at the top of my 'wants' list (Father's Day coming up!) :D With this tracklisting and artists involved, how could I not?

It’s difficult, on one hand you get Max Headroom, on the other, Moments in Love is my favourite track. I usually play Daft, on SACD until my SACD player decided it no longer wanted to be a player.

One of my favourite bands ever. I did however have a row with a guy at work over this album - he was "quizz master" for a work quiz and when it cam to the music round we had the traditional 10 "beat the intro" tracks recorded onto tape, a point each for Title and Artist.
One of the tracks was "Together in Electric Dreams" (1 point, thank you) by Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder. (Sits back and waits for the 2nd point.)
Him: "That's wrong"
Me: "What do you mean that's wrong?"
Him: "It's by The Human League, I taped it off their "Greatest Hits" CD. No point.
Me: Grrrrr! No, It's not! It might be on the Greatest Hits CD, but it's not by The Human League...
Him: Yes it is.
Me. No it's not!
(And repeat!) I didn't get the point, I have no idea how significant that was in the grand scheme of the outcome of quiz but I have never forgiven him anyway!

Hmm, he sounds like management material :)
I like a bit of pop quiz, me. I always thought 70s music was my thing, as it was what I grew up with. But a few years ago me and Anita did an online 80s quiz, and between us we got 100/100 correct! I hadn't realised 80s pop music had embedded itself in my memory so completely! It really was the decade for pop I reckon :)

When I was at school there used to be an inter-school quiz league for the sixth forms. I joined the team since you got to go visit schools that had girls.
We had a semi-final match against one school which was very close and came down to one question, 'In the book 'The Hobbit' who killed the dragon Smaug?'
The correct answer is 'Bard The Bowman' which we gave. But the answer on the question sheet was 'Bilbo Baggins.' So we lost and got knocked out. The bloke even admitted the answer was wrong but the rules were that the answer on the sheet was final.

Was your school boys only then? Posh. So were you like Tom Brown, or more of a Flashman?
Boys only Grammar school. Founded by Jesuits in 1842. It wasn't posh, more like a military prison for 11 to 18 year olds. Any time I see the film 'The Hill' that reminds me of it.
Was a good school though, education-wise.

Awesome album. Even back in the 80’s I used to get the piss taken for playing “old man’s music” - seems I was 40 years ahead of the curve!
Not noticed my daughter playing them yet, she’s still big on Fleetwood Mac and several other 60’s, 70’s and 80’s bands (Beatles, Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, The Cure, Smiths, etc.etc.) She was playing Redbone the other day.

Me too. Back in the 1980s one of my younger brothers said to me 'Don't know how you can listen to this stuff.' He was into The Icicle Works' and all that indie stuff of the time.
I told him, 'You'll like it when you're older.'
He says 'I hope not.'
25 years later I went to his wedding, what tune did they have for their 'first dance'? - 'Romeo & Juliet.'
Next up: Jethro Tull do Dire Straits:

Second album picks up where 2023’s debut (Come Around And Love Me) left off as far as I can tell on first listen of today’s release. Motown inspired sounds in the vein of Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson to paraphrase Google AI. I enjoyed his first album, he’s undoubtedly talented, I just feel there’s something that for me doesn’t quite make him epic.

The album's six tracks range in length from eight to fifteen minutes but seem shorter and were recorded live in the studio, without any preparation; there was little editing afterwards. The winning results demonstrate that the musicians in this trio . . . Arooj Aftab on vocals (singing in Urdu), Vijay Iyer on piano and electronics and Shahzad Ismaily on bass and Moog synthesiser are strongly connected.

That's not unusual as you probably know - there isn't anything he's done I haven't enjoyed to be honest - I think this is quite extraordinary and one of my favourites. It was my album of the year for 2023.

I stopped listening to John Martyn (RIP) once he started to stop singing and just use his voice as an instrument. Neither folk nor jazz, but somewhere in the middle.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260609/b02761ad8ed0f3e710e056f6babda76d.jpg
Interesting back story, Pauline Skott was brought up in a forest in Sweden, with no exposure to the outside world or music other than folk music from her own village until she went to high school, where she started an interest in making music. She eventually moved to Stockholm to become a songwriter, though didn’t start her own singing career until she was 25.
Interesting music, difficult to shoehorn into a genre but more poppy than you would imagine given her roots (pun intended!)

I'm trying to make sense of the album art - is that a giant hand growing out of that girl's chest, or should I have gone to Specsavers?

Been working through Rolling Stone “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list (there’s a playlist on Tidal and Spotify - albeit the numbers don’t align correctly with the list below, presumably as some are not available to stream) the past few days.
Quite surprised how many I have never heard in my life, even a few artists I have never heard of!
It’s certainly a very interesting and educational exercise so far as well as a great eclectic playlist to have on whilst doing stuff. Currently about half way through.
As with any such list, no one is going to agree these are all a “greatest song of all time” but in the main it’s hard to argue the majority of them, even if you don’t personally like the tracks - YMMV!
