Not anyone's favourite Bowie album, but I've always liked it. And on vinyl too, as it should be :)

Certainly not mine! I used to have a vinyl copy, but it didn't last long - gave it to a charity shop.

Not mine either but it's by no means poor and I still listen to my copy (also Vinyl) every now and then.

Another good one. I was in two minds about Steely Dan for years: I couldn't decide whether I liked them of not. Even so I continued to buy their LPs, and eventually I realised I did like them after all!

'Pin Ups' is a collection of covers by Bowie of those songs which influenced him in his youth. All well and good, but I much prefer the original versions, and IMO don't feel Bowie adds anything to them.

Whereas I feel it adds useful background info and interest to who Bowies influences were and how they shaped his music. I don't care if they are better than the originals, or not, that is not what the Album is about. Differing views do make life more interesting though.

I don't think he needed to add anything to them, not for me anyway - I like the songs, and I like Bowie. That's good enough for me. The originals were before my time so the Bowie versions were new to me - if I'd grown up with those songs I would feel differently I'm sure.

Most people would probably prefer Ziggy Stardust or his 'Berlin Trilogy', but if I could keep only one album from my entire collection (including non-Bowie) this would be it. I've owned at least one copy of this for fifty-odd years, and I've still not tired of it. Might just be buried with it.

Going through the oddities box, which lead me to this - The Infinity Project, a Raja Ram (Shpongle) Goan Trance band. A rare pre “official” white label copy where all the tracks are mixed up.

Just taken delivery of this month's Hifi Choice from my neighbour, and did try to read it, but that's nigh on impossible now I've put this CD in, a recommendation from Alex. Not at all suitable as 'background' music, it positively cries out "Put that mag down and listen to this"... So Hifi Choice will have to wait until later when Mrs. P is watching Eastenders.
Did I give the impression I really like this album? Well I do.

Next up and vinyl and another 1980's classic live album (check out track 2 side 2!), from a group who gave us six equally brilliant studio albums between 1978 and 1991, plus a solo career for Mark Knopfler which has given us another ten solo albums, nine soundtrack albums and four collaboration albums including the often overlooked Missing, Persumed Having a Good Time from the Notting Hillbillies.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251113/79a78415ea55abf88862ab6c86923324.jpg

Genesis - Selling England By the Pound.
I mentioned that I like Genesis SEBTP to the owner of our local ice-cream emporium. On the next visit he played it over the shop system (Quad pre and power, B&W speakers - NICE).
Fantastic, home-made ice cream with loads of double cream and less sugar...delicious.

I have the CD version of Dom's. It was one of the first CDs I bought, I think. About 1996 when I finally succumbed to getting a CD player.
Yours probably an earlier release.

Lots of love for Tom Waits. I could say "I ain't missing you at all" - because that's probably the only song of his I know! :sofa: I'd best get Tidalling or Spotifying...
Meanwhile, one of my favourite chillout albums of all time, just sounds so, so good on any format. (Vinyl preferably, but still not sorted a turntable out for the study...)

Sorry, I simply cannot stand the voice of Tom Waits. When I hear it, all I think of is a load of phlegm 'gurgling' in his throat! It almost makes me feel sick.
Shame really, as the subjects and themes he sings about is of interest to me. I just wish someone else would sing his songs.

Oh, I like both Bob Dylan and Dr John, in both the sound of their voices and what they sing about (in the case of Dylan all of his LPs up to but not including 'Slow Train Coming').

That's interesting as to my mind both of those also have a gutteral, nasally delivery, so I wonder how Tom Waits is different ?
Hard to explain - I have no problem with nasal or adenoidal-sounding singing voices. Nor do I have a problem with guttural delivery. It's just Tm Wait's voice, it may be guttural but it sounds to me like he is gargling at the same time..

Self-titled difficult sixth album - literally the 'black sheep'.
Grunge had left hard rock behind; their original bassist left; and their original drummer died prematurely. Astbury and Duffy weren't on good terms. So what do they do?
It's their 'Physical Graffiti' or 'Exile On Main Street'. Too long and too loose, and patchy, but there are some real gems in here. It deserves a reappraisal.

Whenever there are retrospectives on Britpop I think Echobelly get overlooked. They had two cracking albums at that time and the B sides of their singles were essential as well IMHO.
Rollins Band were superb too, in a very different way obvs. Pulverising but pretty good players.

Some great cassettes there Mike! I only had a couple of dozen pre-recorded ones from the 80’s (lots of home made compilations though) as only used in the car or Matsui Walkman knock off! They’ve gone astray, suspect I may have tipped them, but I do have at least 4 cassette decks!
Blasts from the past for me, the former bought on vinyl, the follow up I suspect was on CD. Long time since I have listened to both these albums in full. Amazing.

Nice one. And on the original Harvest label too :) It made it onto this year's Christmas 'wish list' (I make a list of stuff I want for Christmas, as apparently I'm hard work to buy for), then Anita buys them and then gets her money back from the various family members. Because they're too bloody lazy to buy stuff themselves. At least they do bother to wrap them so that's something I suppose.
Anyway, yesterday an LP-shaped package arrived, and when I asked about it I was told not to be so bloody nosey... I'll put money on it being Ummagumma :)
Now then, on to this, Joe Jackson at his best.

The new Nightmares On Wax album (currently streaming only pending LP release next month). All reggae and presented as if it's a soundsystem broadcast. The numerous shoutouts to 'Echo 45' are a bit intrusive but that aside it ranges from soulful lovers to dubby and is now on my Christmas list.

Bentley Rhythm Ace!
I used to have a tape of them. It was just two brummies who were lathe turners - or some similar brummage type job.

So pleased I kept these compilation tapes. I haven’t played many of them for 20 years + and the memories have come flooding back. So many great tunes , and indeed bands, that I had forgotten about. As a bonus, there are some amazing rare and exclusive mixes of songs I know and love. Like a kid in a candy shop here :)

I remember hearing a Bentley Rhythym Ace album which my mate raved about. I didn't like it at all, and there were a lot of 'boinng' noises like a spring, just sounded stupid and not at all trippy.
The other tape with Chemical Brothers, Underworld etc much more my thing.

CD cases strewn on the floor this morning after last night's session:
The Stone Roses - Second Coming
Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden
All Saints - All Hits
The Ruts - The Crack
Plus a few empty bottles of London Pride...
London Pride is a good 'slurp'! :)

While up town Christmas shopping, I escaped for an hour and walked across town to Action Records. I picked up a couple of CDs, this being one of them.

Must be 40 years since I last heard it, and didn't care for it enough to buy. I'll see how I get on with it now, and if I like it enough I'll put it on my vinyl wants list.

That sounds like an offer I can't refuse :) I'm planning to come visit before Christmas if you're about, I'll bring it with me. The album does sound better than I remember.
This one on next, my other purchase. Not exactly the best of John Lee Hooker, but it was my first ever CD, given to me by my mum. This time round, not taking my reading glasses with me cost me a fiver - I thought "ooh, two quid, that's a bargain". Turned out to be 7 quid  But I didn't want to look like a tight wad, and after walking half a mile to the shop ( a long walk for me), I wasn't going to come away with nothing.

Gordon, the proprietor of Action Records had this playing while I was in the shop - funny how sometimes, despite the 'lesser' sound system, you can enjoy the tunes more than at home. Or maybe it's just me. Maybe I just relax into the music when not thinking about speaker placement, VTA, room acoustics, or whether changing the cartridge was a good idea...

Their first three albums have a combination of sounds that I find really attractive: metronomic snare, skittering guitar, bass string attack and sweet-as-nectar keyboard. I seem to recall Martin Rushent produced them. Even the songs that I don't like are really appealing to listen to.
