And that segued nicely both alphabetically and sonically into…
Sting - Brand New Day (1999)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251003/9e58ac53fc12cad83cc042998b79ba08.jpg
I feel Sting had lost his cool by then? He was definitely cool in the Police/Quadrophenia era but he seems to be one of those artists not taken so seriously these days, or maybe that’s just me. (A bit like Bono…). Anyway, it’s not been played often or recently, but I actually really enjoyed it. Might dig out Ten Summoners Tales on vinyl later for a proper retro fix.
"Ten Summoners Tales" is definitely the better of the two.
I put Sting's lack of cool down to his practising Tantric sex for several hours a day!
I lost interest in Sting after he became fascinated with the Elizabethian composer John Dowland.
You each got one of the two - the drive in my study I have just remembered is the slimmed down version of my collection, so doesn’t have all my rips (not sure how The Strokes didn’t get included in the diet version…)
2nd from last is the Style Council, which possibly controversially I think is Weller’s best period, and Introducing from 1983. I don’t think this should be classed as an album, really, with two long versions of Long Hot Summer I would say it’s an EP at only 35 minutes, but a great 35 minutes indeed! (Actually I just checked Wikipedia and they call it a “Studio Mini Album”.)

And the last one was Steve’s guess (though I do have some Stone Roses and Stereo MCs, strangely they got culled for the study system) so it’s a Greatest Hits - I may have a couple (1 at least) of their albums on vinyl, but always been happy with this:

Yes!
Caught Jools Holland last night, some good performances (well worth finding on BBC iPlayer) so checking out some of the artists’ albums. First up:
Robert Plant - Saving Grace (2025)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251006/0011e5c02818a0b2c9cdab62ea23c108.jpg
I really enjoyed this, not my usual type of thing but some great covers and musicianship.
James Yorkston - Songs for Nina and Johanna (2025)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251006/1b7a59268a95c68610d010a614186a0f.jpg
I had never heard of Scottish folk singer James Yorkston before, but Nina Persson is one of my favourite female singers, so the performance on Jools piqued my interest. Really lovely album, highly recommend checking this out.
“A beautiful new album from James Yorkston, this time featuring not one but two of Sweden’s most recognisable female vocalists. Recorded in Stockholm with Nina Persson (The Cardigans), Johanna Söderberg (First Aid Kit) and members of The Second Hand Orchestra, these are songs about family, love and parenthood.”
Final one of the Jools discoveries:
Olivia Dean - The Art of Loving (2025)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251006/d0fa1736f28c01c59eb08bfe117f541b.jpg
I was vaguely aware of Olivia Dean but her performances on Jools led me to listen to this, her new and second album. Hard to give it a genre, poppy R&B, maybe? Well on first listen this is another cracking album that will be on regular rotation, and I will be checking out her earlier music.

Agreed - and for the first time in history, I found Jool's interview with one of his guests interesting. Even though my partner distracted me from fully listening to the interview with Robert Plant, it was landmark change.

She was pleasant enough, but I wouldn't go overboard.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251006/62e142e3be9e6956d20cb0f0270a4cc9.jpg
Another one bought, loved and then forgotten about! Trevor Horn on production duties, so clean as a whistle, and I remember this album for its lengthy and interesting introductions - back to a time when every pop song didn’t have to jump straight in with a catchy chorus to avoid being skipped…

I like it Barry, had this one for years. I've heard it described as 'Acid Jazz', it's sort of modern, and using a lot of sampling of stuff you may well have heard before.
Probably the best known track on the album:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a4/Nick_Mason%27s_Saucerful_of_Secrets_Live_at_the_Ro adhouse.jpg?20230427001853
Live at the Roundhouse is unlike any other concert film connected with Pink Floyd. Its the nearest thing you can get to a time machine, transporting you back to the very earliest days of the band. Nick Mason, the only band member to have played on all of Pink Floyds studio albums, returns to the group's earliest records, joined in the line-up by Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Lee Harris and Dom Beken.
Nick Masons Saucerful of Secrets took the drummer back to clubs for the first time since 1967, then to theatres, across the UK, North America and Europe, playing only music his old band had recorded before The Dark Side of the Moon.
Captured from the bands celebrated shows at Londons Roundhouse, where Pink Floyd played some of their most revered early shows in the 1960s, the LPs feature a uniquely thrilling setlist including songs hailing from Syd Barretts time with the band. Only four songs from this eclectic roster have ever previously appeared on official live releases by Pink Floyd or its members. Everything else is being experienced for the first time since their original live performances.
I was initially sceptical about this, but I think it's better than some of the original LP versions. Blasphemy? - I don't care!

Just found this on the shelf, didn't know we had it - turns out Anita bought it a few years ago then forgot about it. So, cellophane off, I'll give it a go. First thing I notice is Liam Neeson (he's everywhere these days, almost as bad as Morgan Freeman) doing the Richard Burton thing... overall not bad though.

I have the original on a double CD. It rarely gets played as the only thing I'm interested in is Richard Burton's narration: in fact what I should try to find is an audio book of "War of the Worlds" read by Richard Burton.

Yes, that would be good, the music, I can take it or leave it. We've had the original on vinyl forever, but it never gets played. Anita bought this "update" as a souvenir of the show, which she said was amazing.
Credit where it's due, production is first rate, and the pressing is as good as I've heard anywhere, almost CD-quiet.

The original War of the Worlds is one of my first album memories - my dad’s mate had a “proper” hi-fi (unlike my dad’s Ferguson “sound system”) and I remember listening to this and thinking “wow” - the “ooo-laaa’s” still give me creeps a little even after all these years… :sofa:

System up and running again eh, Mart... How's the Linn compared to the Krell?
Not so sure actually - I think it's lacking bass compared to previously but it's three weeks since I last listened.
Although it's been so dark here today I wouldn't be surprised if I've connected a speaker out of phase.
There would be no doubt if you had connected the speakers out of phase - there would be no stereo image.
For me it has been the first two Santana LPs.

Just back from a music evening at my daughter’s school - 20 odd pieces varying from Mozart on the piano to a four piece year 10 band playing Arctic Monkeys. My daughter plays clarinet in the Concert Band, they opened the show with the theme from Star Wars and then a version of Chameleon (much shortened!) so it had to be this when I got in…

This and the next album are two of the most underrated albums of their time in my opinion.
First this great album from Peter Grant, a superb collection of songs with great orchestration and Peters phenomenal vocals, with phrasing to rival the very best by which I mean the governor, Francis Albert Sinatra !

2. Walk Away
3. The Best Is Yet To Come
4. The Windmills Of Your Mind
5. Spooky
6. The Fool On The Hill
7. The Girl From Ipanema
8. We've Only Just Begun
9. I Saw Her Standing There
10. The More I See You
11. You're The First, The Last, My Everything
12. Didn't We
13. On Days Like These
14. All The Way
Bonus Track
15. Modern Way

Peter Grant began singing at the age of six and played at working men's clubs from the age of 12. He grew up in Guiseley, north-west of Leeds, West Yorkshire, and was a pupil at Guiseley High School.
His first album New Vintage was released in April 2006, and entered at No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart, largely thanks to his chat show appearances with Michael Parkinson, Davina McCall and GMTV, where he made his TV debut.

Yes, we saw that, it's what prompted me to pick this out for a play. A great performance, but tbf the best track on the album. The first side is pretty meh, some nice enough stuff on side 2 but Angie Baby is the star. Shame she didn't get some more edgy material to work with.

The first and the best. :) IMHO when they dropped "Transit Authority" from their name and were to be known simply as "Chicago", musically they went downhill towards being easy listening AOR.

I agree, the earlier the better. I do still quite like the cheesy stuff though ;)

There's a lot of good stuff being spinned. :)
Hi Idlewithnodrive,
It looks like we are from the same era, I love your choices, some of which I already possess.
It also looks like you enjoy your albums regularly as the covers are worn like they should be after this time in a music lover's home.
My albums are all damaged along the spines due to a cat (not mine) using them as a scratching post!
Playing at the moment is the Yes album illustrated. Something of a hodge podge of styles as it is by Yes and individal members and others (associated with Yes).
OK but a bit inconsistent.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the compliments (I think :) ); appreciated.
Yes, some of the 60's and 70's releases have certainly seen better days but haven't we all ? Late 70's early 80's was the era of my youth, so Punk into post Punk / Indie and Psych Rock. Once you get into Psych you have to go back to the 60's and 70's so a bit of musical hysteresis.
With regards to being a music lover, absolutely. Music is a big part of who I am. Why not post some of what you listen to and we can compare notes.
Cheers,
Mike

That happened with some of mine. He actually walked past the lodger's records and sunk his claws into mine, watched him do it. Wasn't even my cat, it was the next door neighbour's, he would spend the daytime in my house to get away from the dog and the child in his.

The title track was featured in an advert for the HALO 3 video game, no idea if that was how I found them, but "Snowbird" is a lovely track and on my "Best Chillout Ever" Spotify playlist.
