This too was the first Captain Beefheart album I heard and bought. It remains one of my favourite Beefheart LPs. Others that I like and have are: Strictly Personal; Spotlight Kid, and the easily accessible Clear Spot.

The one Beefheart album that I cannot stand or understand is Trout Mask Replica. It divides opinion: some think it a work of genius, others, myself included, think it an unlistenable cacophony (largely due to it being mixed and produced by Frank Zappa). Every so often I pull it out hoping I will find out what all the fuss is about - but so far I hear nothing to change my mind.

Of Beefheart's later output, I quite like Bat Chain Puller, and his farewell album: Ice Cream for Crows.

Marantz CD6007. As I posted elsewhere, Richer Sounds were going to repair my existing CDP, but the couriers damaged it. So Richers offered me a brand new player, currently selling for £350, for just £120.

Pretty much the same as my old player, apart from a different DAC, some bigger better capacitors (I'm told), and the digital input plays hi-res files, unlike the old one. Not that it'll get any use from me.

I would have been ok paying £120 to get my old CDP fixed, so getting a later 'upgraded' model brand new with 5 year guarantee for the same money is a proper win imo :)

Only downside: looks like I've lost my copy of Blood Sugar Sex Magic which I sent off with the player, but I think it would be churlish to be kicking off about it :)

I went off it for a time - it never sounded right with my speakers, too thin and a bit harsh. It's like the production worked against the speakers' frequency response or something. Made me think it was just a shit recording. But it works perfectly with the speakers I now have. I also have a few of their later albums, I should revisit those too.

I don't have that one, never heard it.

I like it - double CD, for just £3.65 off Music Magpie. Definitely worth a punt.

You will have heard this track I'm sure:

Agreed, I found a copy in Oxfam last year for 20p, so at that price so even if I thought it was terrible it wouldn't be a great loss. As you say it's not awful and I'll keep it for now.

Impossible to pigeonhole this one, perhaps file it under "multigenre" :) It seems to be pop with a bit more depth, and I caught glimpses of reggae and even northern soul. I will be playing it again.

This one to start for me, but I won't have the house to myself for long, so a bit of extra volume...

Earlier discussions about REM albums have prompted me to give them a go, but I've opted for a 'best of' their earlier stuff. Might be the last purchase this side of Christmas - as soon as I'd clicked 'buy it now' Anita said "Stop buying CDs, you need to be making a Christmas list" I forget that Ebay purchases ping on her phone...

Another Radio Paradise discovery, the best thing to come out of Margate since, well, what else has come out of Margate apart from rock? But this is really, really good - released in about June I think, but due on vinyl imminently. And it doesn’t sound like they come from Margate, not rocky at all!

And to continue the 'ethnic' late-night music theme:

Catrin Finch, Seckou Keita - 'Clychau Dibon'

I find it amazing that I still discover bands that have been relatively prominent yet completely passed me by. Case in point today being Ivy. I recently discovered this album from last year, Traces of You. https://www.undertheradarmag.com/reviews/traces_of_you_ivy/

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20261029/01b287ee3cda3c73ccacca3d43e01b51.jpg

Ivy’s debut album was actually 30 years ago, and when you look at some of the people they have worked with and supported, it is almost unbelievable that I haven’t (knowingly) come across them before. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_(band)

I am currently working through the back catalogue, discovering new old songs and learning about the band and the somewhat sad history and ultimately this latest release, which pulls together posthumous work from one of the co founders of the band.

And that is exactly what still keeps me listening to music, and when I say to myself “I have enough records, I don’t need any more” I am only lying to myself!

What you should be saying to yourself is "I have too many records, I'll give some to Steve" :)

Never heard of Ivy myself, only Ivy I know of is Ivy Brennan off Corrie. (What has three legs and doesn't talk? Don and Ivy Brennan). You had to be there.

Yes, it's a fine display of the club singer's art.

Have to say until today I've not seen that since it was originally on. 32 years and it's stuck in my mind.

The Word had some great moments, including a pissed Ollie Reed, The L7 minge-fest, and Mark Lamarr winding up MC Hammer. Why can't we have stuff like this on telly any more?

I don't have much of that sort of thing. What is it? 'Ambient House'?

I also have some Thievery Corporation albums, and a couple of others I forget what. Rarely that the mood takes me for it.

Back in about '95 had a mate who was moving down to Hemel and he owed me a bit of money - not a lot about £30 - but instead he gave me all his records which were entirely House, Techno, Ambient, all that. Not many albums but loads of 12'' singles, one of those orange bread crates full of them.

Not my sort of thing so I gave them all away in turn to a mate who was a DJ. Obviously in retrospect that was probably a bad move.
