Interesting - I saw them in 1990 at Maine Road Manchester, it was called the Urban Jungle tour, which I imagine was the same set.
The Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels Tour was a concert tour which was launched in North America in August 1989 to promote the band's album Steel Wheels; it continued to Japan in February 1990, with ten shows at the Tokyo Dome. The European leg of the tour, which featured a different stage and logo, was called the Urban Jungle Tour; it ran from May to August 1990.

I had it in my head that The Cinematic Orchestra "accidentally" got given this project for a French Disney documentary about, um, flamingos, because of their name. I'm not sure if that is entirely correct, but according to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crimson_Wing:_Mystery_of_the_Flamingos), Imogen Heap was due to do it, but pulled out at the last minute and it passed on to The Cinematic Orchestra...
Whatever, it's a magnificent soundtrack in my opinion, well worth a listen, and the documentary isn't a bad watch either, narrated for the UK version by Mariella Frostrup.
Mariella Frostrup still has a sexy-sounding voice. :)

No, somehow I missed that one, but it's going on my list. "Low Life" is the one I just ordered. I find these guys to have done just my sort of thing - I guess they're sort of EDM, but much more varied in their pace and with plenty of light and shade to keep them interesting. Got you to thank for this :)

Well yes that is a distinct possibility - coming from a 'classical' point it may well come up short. But I can hear it for what it is, without comparisons, even though I will probably have heard the Mussorgsky original pieces at various times.
Buy it, hate it, sell it on to me - I have a decent vinyl copy but wouldn't mind it on CD :)

There's some serious bass on it, I think if I'd turned it up any more the house might collapse.
I don't have all her albums - looking at her discography I'm missing three of them - but nothing's ever going to be better to me than 'Diamond Life' as that was of its (and my) time.

It's the only one of theirs I ever heard, I think it's actually more your sort of thing than it is mine.

Trawling through LPs from my teenage years. I was into Rush at the time so I investigated Triumph, another Canadian power trio. Side two meanders too much and you can see why Rush remained Canadian music's chief export. Side one is much better than I remember though, being direct and Montrose-ish. Hell, let's spin that again...

A few minutes in I just wasn't feeling it (probably because it was overplayed back then), but as it went on it got better :) Still not what it was though, and it's not the music's fault, just that I'm thirty years older and I'm preferring 'real' instruments these days.

A random purchase from back in the '70s when I was into Deep Purple. Glover borrows the Munich Phil and Simon Phillips and, partnered by Martin Birch, goes for symphonic light rock. It didn't chart anywhere to my knowledge but it's better than it has any right to be. In fact I think I'll spin it again...

Maybe make money for me one day :) Some good songs on it but overall I prefer The Black Sea. Never got to see them live, which is a shame, it wasn't for want of trying. But Andy Partridge had issues I believe, and wasn't up for touring.

My first LP was T. Rex "Electric Warrior". My mate's new girlfriend (who's parents had a pub) took us into town and she bought me this and "Clockwork Orange" soundtrack for me mate.
We found out later she'd been nicking money out of the pub till. But I wasn't about to give up my LP, no way :)

Earlier I listened to one of the (many) ROIOs of Black Sabbath at Asbury Park NJ in '75, with Ozzy asking the audience if they're high and shouting 'cocaine' at the end of every line in 'Snowblind'. It's not big and it's not clever, but it's timeless. Which Kaiser Chiefs certainly are not.

Tbh Barry, Radiohead doesn't get much play round here, despite having almost all of their recordings. This is probably the one for me, it has some beautiful melodies interspersed with raucous rackets. I think they went more 'experimental' with their later recordings, so tomorrow I might revisit Pablo Honey or The Bends, which should be a bit more straightforward.

The double live album 'The Road To You' is a good snapshot of his stuff from the late 1970s to about 1990. Good production values too.

Picked this up in a charity shop without realising it was a DVD. Only realised when my CD player displayed "No Disc" when I loaded it.
So I had to listen to it via my TV DVD player (a Sony machine) with Quad 520 power amplifier and B&W DM2 speakers.
Sounded pretty good, despite the techno-bollocks of: 96kHz sampling and producing a 24 bit digital word, allowing a dynamic range of 144dB.
I think I'll seek out a 'standard' CD version.

I used to make cassettes of stuff recorded off the radio, such as "Late Junction" on Radio 3. Probably have about 100 TDK metal tapes lurking in the loft, and despite having a couple of Nakamichi tape decks, haven't played any cassettes for at least ten years. :doh:

Re NME/Strange Fruit Peel sessions.
I used to collect the NME cassettes. Think I've got about 30 of them. Several were important snapshots of their time, such as 'C86' which covered a wide range of independent label guitar bands in the wake of The Smiths eg Primal Scream, Shop Assistants etc.

Great album. Back in the early 90s I played that for loads of people who've never heard of him and were only into stuff like Orbital and Groove Armada, and they all went out and bought it.

CBAT is my favourite Steely Dan album. It has personality whereas after that I feel that the sophistication and perfectionism make them too sterile. Dirty Work is understatedly great.

This gets a spin every now and then, absolutely love it, but I have for some reason never listened to any of their subsequent albums. Howard Jones is another, where I have (and love) Humans Lib but for some reason, never explored anything since. Frighteningly, these are 40 and 41 years old respectively! How did that happen!?

You got a lot of good listening ahead of you then - assuming you like them.
Neil Young has done massively varied music. I don't like all of it by a long chalk. 'Trans' for example. As my mate Budge said, 'I don't know what he was thinking.'
Steely Dan is just genius from start to finish. I recommend listening to the albums in order of release.

Steely Dan's sound changes somewhat over the years but is nothing like anyone else, nothing like Genesis or Dire Straits.

I will give them both a listen Martin. Yes, my tastes are more heavy / Psych into Punk and EDM but I do listen to a lot of other stuff too and often discover bands that surprise me, so we shall see :)

Well I must admit that whilst owning 7 Steely Dan albums on CD it would appear, I don't really know them that well. I think I probably acquired them 'cos everyone else said how good they are! I shall revisit, and as Martin suggests, the beginning is as good a place to start as any.

I agree the with Dire Strait's first one being the best. But I have a soft spot for 'Love Over Gold' since it was the first album I ever bought. Plus the title track is such a beautiful bit of music.
There's some crossover with Steely Dan since you've got Knopfler playing on 'Gaucho.' Which he does very well.

Steely Dan were always a difficult band to categorise, for most of the album it was Fagen and Becker plus a number of session musicians many of whom came from a jazz background, which resulted in a jazz feel to many of the songs. When I think of middle of the road bands or acts, I’m looking at pop acts which Steely Dan could never be classed as.

I'd probably better not mention that I find Dark Side Of The Moon a bit average.
There are lots of things that I feel I should like but they just don't turn me on - Radiohead is another example, they've got all the right ingredients yet they make me drift off.
But having our own individual tastes reassures me that no algorithm or AI can replicate us.

Like Pete, I wasn't that taken with it, and like Martin, much preferred "Animals" (which I saw performed at the Bath Festival).
Later with the advent of CD, I did get a copy of DSOTM, but I had to go through a number of remasters before I found a version I was happy with.

Ha ! Similarly I got it recently having heard ‘Fade Into You’ played on a few things. I don’t really buy Cd’s now, unless they’re 50p from the charity shop or the LP is something rare and collectable for money I’m not prepared to pay. This was on an ‘essentials’ display at my local shop for £7 odd, so I thought why not. Hope you enjoy it :-)
