Giving that a go now as never heard of him although turns out he's quite a famous drummer and was with Chick Corea. Pretty funky.

Which came first: tightness of the chest of the two performers resulting in the cacophony of their playing, or the sound of their playing causing chest angina?

Whatever, their mirror image costumes are imaginative - working out how the drummer could see through the mouth of his costume caused me to be distracted from their playing. As you can see I wasn't impressed, so let's be kind and say Angine de Poitrine is not for me.

Cant win em all Barry :)

On Tidal in hi-res - very enjoyable!

Moving on, in the same vein...

That looks interesting. Can't knock his tastes.

A few years ago I had a spell of listening to his show on one of the radio stations. Iirc he sometimes played remixes by er, The Reflex I think they were called. They did a remix of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition", which was like hearing the song for the very first time :) Is he still doing radio shows?

That's from my era, saw them in 89 or 90 not sure now. If you can remember those years you weren't there.

Yes an excellent album, with great musicians, I thought I would dig it out and listen to again, however I don’t seem to have it anymore which has come as a bit of a surprise. No sign of the 12inch single version either but after a bit of search that was found and now logged in. Looks like I will have to start searching for a clean copy of the album

Haven't listened to this for maybe thirty years (!) Its blend of street beats, light melody and philosophical rap have aged well and I can imagine it working in different settings from a bar or party to just me working at home...

So went with this:

Ten minutes in I decided I really don't like Chase and Status. Makes me want to curl up in a corner and wait for it to be over. With shelf space at a premium, this will go into a box marked "what was I thinking?"

Something more palatable now:

It is actually pretty good, if you like disco, although it isn't all disco. £1 charity shop.

Funny actually as it's a big shop, used to be a car showroom and there's usually no-one anywhere near the cds and records, but I had to jostle with not one but two bearded hipsters. They were only after the records though. God knows what they expect to find as it's always 100 percent dross.

I doubt they care whether the records are crap, as long as they have one cool album on view next to the turntable - when chucked into their shelves they could be anything to a casual observer. It's all about "look at me".

Agreed, and whilst 'Horses' is not as bad as the guy made out, IMHO 'Easter' is her best by far, and a copy should be in everyone's collection.

Spoon is one of those bands where I appear to only have bought one of their CDs (Gimme Fiction, 2005) which I loved, but then never investigated the back catalogue (at the time) or have followed since. Weird, because I really like Gimme Fiction, so will be rectifying that with some Tidal listening! Thanks for the nudge, Mike - that's why I love this thread!

That's because they've twigged that they have some value again.

There was a time when you could pick up used CDs for as little as 20p.
My favourite Oxfam shop in London used to have a couple of hundred, and being situated in one of the more cosmopolitan part of the city, there were many CDs of performers and acts that were new to me and at 20p were worth taking a punt. I must have been lucky as out of the score or more I bought, I only disliked two or three. Sadly the shop no longer sells CDs; having replaced them with DVDs.

The British Heart Foundation are still selling CDs but they were always £1.50 or more, so they get little custom from me.

The only song of his I know of is "7 seconds", a duet with Neneh Cherry. It did rather well at the time. Neneh's vocals were in English, his in French or whatever language they speak in Senegal. So what's this album like? Does he sing in English here? Not that it matters much to me if he doesn't.

Being a one-time French colony, French is the official language of government and education. However Wolof is the primary language and is understood and spoken by a large majority of the country. In "7 Seconds" N'Dour sings in Wolof to start then either French or English in the chorus.

However Wolof is often mixed with French and Arabic in urban areas such as the capital Dakar.

On "Egypt", N'Dour sings with Cairo's Fathy Salama Orchestra and with a small group of Senegalese musicians and singers. The album is a homage to various saints and sages of Senegal's mystical (and moderate) Sufi take on Islam. I assume N'Dour sings in Wolof, but it doesn't matter to me; I collect "World" music (a stupid and Western exceptionalist catagorisation - all music is 'world music') for both the ethnic instrumental playing as well as for singing, so I much prefer to hear the singing in the local language.

A collection of tracks from his first three records, released between 1988 and 1990: Immigres, The Lion and Set. IMO it's not the "Best of", as it displays N'Dour's attempt to copy western production values at the expense of authenticity. Fortunately he seems to have learnt from his early output.

Wouldn't have made any difference to me, the winning bidder had gone past my maximum. I only had £6.50 and a couple of pre-decimal coins in my socks drawer. How much would you have gone to?

The winning bidder probably got his hand down the side of his settee and found the extra he needed. Of course if you couldn't be bothered to do that's your loss.

I always thought Norman Rockwell was the American version of Frank Sidebottom so this has been an education at least.

Interesting... I should give it a listen, then maybe I can look at the cover and not think about feminine hygiene products. I watched a couple of their music videos, and they do like to show off their underwear and making their wobbly bits wobble. Sort of distracted me from the music.

For years I couldn't stand Neil Young's thin and 'weedy' voice. Then about twelve years ago I had a volte face (think it was with 'After the Goldrush') and have become a complete convert. Still dislike his grunge period output though.

Not sure he ever had a 'grunge' period. Most of the albums with Crazy Horse are quite heavy rock, but the only album he did in the grunge era was 'Ragged Glory' which is outstanding IMO.

Nice one. I spent some time in Canterbury in my mid twenties, and picked up on the Canterbury Scene. Initially Soft Machine and then Caravan.

I bought 'Blind Dogs' for the cover. It's not a bad LP, but for me 'In the Land of Grey and Pink' is their definitive LP.

Ordered this at the beginning of January, finally arrived this morning... better late than never I suppose. Worth the wait? Really not sure. Value for money? Well you get 23 minutes of 'Echoes' on one side, and that's it. Just some psychedelic etching on side two. Not gatefold, just a simple sleeve, and no liner notes.

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51lVWlVxVWL._AC_SX425_.jpg

How about sound quality? Well they give it a go, half-speed mastering, and 'back-to-front' pressing (supposedly to minimise end-of-side distortion). But while the sq isn't bad, it does sound to me a bit 'closed in' and not very dynamic. Like what you might expect from a fifty year-old live recording.

Can't fault the playing though.

Sorry you weren't that taken with Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets. I feel responsible as I raved over the CD set:

It was recorded live at The Roundhouse. London 2019. A double CD and DVD of the performance, complete with a glossy 30 page booklet. I think it is an excellent recording and their version of Pink Floyd's tracks stand up well and IMO are equally as good as the originals.

That's the only album of his that I have. Not played it in ages, and it'll have to wait another couple of days as I'm off somewhere else till Wednesday night.

The Echoes set was recorded in Frankfurt, so not necessarily of the same standard as the Roundhouse CD/DVD set, which is still on my 'to buy' list. I will say again the Echoes set isn't bad, I was just expecting better recording-wise.

Even though this "Echoes Live" is only one side of the vinyl, that's pretty much the same for me as "Meddle", where I only ever play the Echoes side anyway.
