It didn't seem to need descaling but I hadn't done it for so long I just did it anyway.

Just had a Live Chat with Bella the tech guy is onto it. Maybe you should get a job at Bella, Grant. You're quicker.:)

Bristol water is fairly hard at 192. so descaling will be needed for equipment.

moderately soft. shouldnt get much scale there. on clarke scale its about 5.4. so on the scale i mentioned to Justin it will be about 90

Marco

No, I cancelled it in the end, as I didn't think I'd use it often enough. Like I said, the water is very good here:)

Marco

Cool... If I lived where you do, or Justers, then I probably would've used it, but here I just decided that it would be something else to sit and take up space that would rarely be used:)

My Gaggia Classic of old would clog and need a descale often. You would know when it needed it.

Not so the Rocket. I usually just use a cleaning detergent designed for espresso machines.

I do it every now and then because I think it must need it but it never seems to make any difference to the way the machine performs. But the cleaning detergent does make a difference, be it a minor one.

Here is Bella's advice:

Hi

I have viewed your video. This is quite easy to fix. You hold the tap body with an adjustable spanner and undo the nut behind the tap handle, you will need to unscrew tap as you are undoing it. Wipe out inside tap body. On the end of thetap shaft is a rubber seal, get a pin and remove it then turn it over this will give it a new lease of life.

Thanks

Chris

my water is softer than yours, and good quality by water standards, but it can be bettered for both drinking, where you want more mineral content, and for coffee where you want filtered with added magnesium. I drink the stuff i make in my still:eyebrows:

Marco
01-07-2019, 15:32
Oh don't worry, I know 'yours' is softer...:eyebrows:

Yeah those were the reasons that made me order one, but then the reality hit home that it's not worth the effort for one large coffee per day, especially given the fact that I can't taste much difference between coffee I make with tap water, and that made from various types of mineral water (I've tried a few);)

Marco.

Unsure how long it will last but probably a year or more it was in good condition on the other side. It's about 1 cm thick.

User211

TBH you could extend the life of the bad side by ramming some aluminium foil in there before you put the washer back in.

The washer just loses resilience over time.

The thing about Gaggia Classic and other old time designs like Rockets is they do have a very good degree of maintainability. Though a Rocket is more complex than a Gaggia Classic internally.

Lovely stuff as usual, matey!

Breakfast earlier today (with fresh pear juice):

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/924/hxcURo.jpg

Made the cappuccino this time with 3/4s whole bottled milk, from our local dairy, and 1/4 Jersey Gold Top, which worked well, giving the coffee an extra creamy flavour, without being too rich:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/0liktC.jpg

And the ubiquitous toast shot for Granty;)

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/921/DC8DFZ.jpg

Jams are Strawberry with Champagne, and fine-cut Seville Orange Marmalade with Whisky, both handmade, from Thursday Cottage.

An afternoon caffè macchiato (with a little more frothy hot milk than is usual):

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/4aKMOU.jpg

Drunk down a bit:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/922/2BdMwX.jpg

Just finished it. Bloody superb taste.

The reason it looks like there's about 8 tonnes of crema on top is the bottomless portafilter and this particular coffee.

Drawing latte art in it from the jug is virtually impossible because of the super thick crema. And the fact I can't do it anyway.

So only a 35% rip off as the cooler cost quite a bit more.

Marco
07-07-2019, 20:06
Ok, so they can do non-alcoholic cocktails, but not coffees... I'd grudge them the money and rather make it myself at home, especially as the rip-off mentality (with the coffee) for me is a major RED FLAG.

Anyway, as long as you guys enjoyed yourself:)

Marco.

User211
08-07-2019, 09:03
IMHO the majors are at it too.

Buy a medium or large size Costa and you really need a double shot. Otherwise it's just warm milk with a vague taste of coffee.

That one was worse than yer average Costa, though, in terms of strength.

Making it at home isn't really an option when your out, though, Marco, and you want a coffee!

There are two small coffee shops within 400 yards of that place that do much better coffee. Either one gets my business next time.

Marco
08-07-2019, 10:11
Making it at home isn't really an option when your out, though, Marco, and you want a coffee!

Sure, but I don't crave coffee like that. Once I've had my large cup of cappuccino in the morning, that's usually my coffee drinking done for the day... I realise though, that you're different. Still, if it were me, I'd find somewhere better to go that wasn't run by rip-off merchants, and employed people who've earned the right to be called a barista!

The make of his coffee machine is rather apt though: 'Rocket"... Aye, he's a rocket, right enough, eh Granty?:D

Can you relate the tasting notes to its real world taste? I find that a rare phenomenon.

I think they are quite subjective, and can vary depending on brewing method. I find it has smooth caramel notes, flavoursome without being too “robust”, so no bitterness at all.

struth
19-07-2019, 13:08
A lot of the flavour notes are from drip making which seems to be better that way for delicate florals and fruits etc. Espresso more so with cocoa, toffees, vanilla etc.

Bit of advice from the coffee experts in the house please...?

Have a mokka pot, but not using it as much as I thought I would, being a lazy sod.
The boys got a delonghi bean to cup, not an expensive one and have to say it makes a great cuppa.

Any reccy’s for a good machine?
More interested in quality of the cup, so don’t need a marble and onyx fronted spendy pro machine, if one at 300 nicker will do the job, in black, then Job’s a good ‘un.

Any reccys appreciated.

or a good pod machine if you dont care:ner:

Mokka pot with the Sage grinder made great coffee, was just taken back by how convenient the bean to cup De'Longhi was.

Maybe I’m moving away from the “hands on” approach as I get older!

Seems daft getting the all in one if I already paid for the Sage grinder (it’s a good’un) and I’m usually just a plain coffee kinda guy, no flat whites or frappe-lappa-tae’s or whatever.

The matching Sage like you have obviously passes the Stuth coffee test, and frankly that’s good enough for me.

About 10 months. No probs with it really. I obviously would like a bigger fancier one but tbh this is really all I need for a couple a day. The smart grinder is good too.
Trick is to get grind and tamp right. To an extent it depends on beans, and I would recommend blending, but I will say don't grind too fine and don't go too heavy on pressure tamping. I've tried various methods and pretty much got it bang on now

https://clivecoffee.com/blogs/learn/ecm-mechanika-vs-rocket-appartamento-comparisonThat's what I'd get if I were you and don't mind the spend.

The problem is if you like coffee you will upgrade and that Rocket is good enough to stop it for a long time.

Otherwise, get the Ranc.

When you see the Appartmento in the flesh it's just an item of pure lust.

User211
13-08-2019, 06:20
One more point.

There's the law of diminishing returns and expensive grinders and coffee machines aren't that much better that £300-500 machines.

So a Ranc is pretty decent.

I'd say Gaggia Classic but the modern ones aren't considered as good as the older ones.

As my brother says, though, a Rocket just says "fuck off!".

Had a look at a few coffee websites, top 10 machines 2019 and the like and Breville/ Sage seem to keep coming up on top?
So looking at one of those, the one you linked to Gant or possibly splurge, do it once and do it right, and go for the Sage Dual Boiler.

Got me thinking too, thanks for the info guys. I don’t contribute to this thread - not because I don’t love coffee, but because I only drink black coffee, and have moved away from a pod machine (on cost and environmental grounds) back to an old school filter machine, but a bean to cup machine would be a lot less faffing around... and taste better to boot. :)

User211
13-08-2019, 19:05
Yup watch YouTube videos on them until you can't take anymore then go for something:)

I just checked eBay and all the direct from Italy Rocket vendors have gone. This is a shame as they were much cheaper than having to buy in the UK. And you could give them a VAT number and they would deduct VAT from the price their side.

There maybe other Italian brands available still, though, so I would at least look.

Taste tests do reveal that some will actually prefer espresso from far less expensive machines than very expensive ones. Much as people will hi-fi systems.

Good luck and enjoy.

Whilst you are deciding, and as you already have a good grinder, I would highly recommend getting a Hario V60 02 dripper. Don’t underestimate it, you can get an amazing cup from it. It’s what the owner of my favourite coffee shop uses at home. To use:

* Plonk the V60 on your cup and put a filter in it
* When kettle has boiled, pour around the V60, then chuck the water
* Put your coffee in to the now wet filter, with the included scoop or weighed...
* Add a small amount of water to wet the grounds and let them bloom for 30 secs
* Slowly pour more water in a circular motion, as close to the sides as you can without touching them

...much more convenient than it sounds!

current blend is;

from extract coffee.. cast iron 12g and unkle funka 19g.
from amber.. casa de zinc 19g
from lavazza.. crema e aroma 22g
from climpson.. la cumbre guatemala 12g

that will do 4 good sized flat whites or double espressos.

All coffees degassed/rested for a week min in cupboard.. excess stock kept in freezer. working stock in bottom of fridge. Add about 85g every 2 days to grinder hopper. use filtered and re magnesiumed water. bwt filters are excellent for this. Scottish tapwater isnt great for coffee as it stands from tap.

I'm sure you like the results, but I like to see what various companies can achieve.

I also like single origin coffees and regard blending coffee (single or blended) as a good idea only when they are sub par. In fact that is the only time I blend, really.

Sure, and i enjoy them all seperately as well, but the combination of them is greater than the individual imo. No point in mixing in poor coffees imo as you end up too close to the lowest denominator.
I do understand that to some its sacralige but ive never been one to stand on ceremony.

Marco
16-08-2019, 07:27
What's the point in cocktails then, if you don't blend different types of alcohol?;)

No, I take your point, Justers, and your method is good, but I'm with Grant in that carefully selecting and judiciously blending different types of beans can give some superb results, not available from using one type alone.

However, I tend only to use two... A good 'base blend', such as Grant's Crema e Aroma, mixed with something 'fancy', from a specialist supplier. For my tastes too, there has to be a percentage of the humble Robusta bean somewhere in the mix, in order to get the right type of acidity, and smoothness added by some quality Arabica.

Marco.

Marco.Nope. It had a chemical taste I could not come to terms with.

In practice I have had a lot of hybrids. Every time a bean bag comes to an end it gets mixed in with the new bag for a cup or two i.e. remnants the hopper with the new beans. Always interesting.

Indeed... In terms of first bit, if that's what you taste, then fair enough. But part of it will be due to the simple fact of them being lower-quality beans, and which haven't been roasted with the same care, and/or aren't very fresh. Fast roasting-to-shipping times is one of the advantages of using small, specialist coffee suppliers:)

Nothing you can buy from mainstream sources or supermarkets comes close!

Light has been on/off today, as the wind is dragging in black clouds then dispersing them again. Not a day to be out really. I had to go round to see my boy last evening as he was unwell, and I got soaked in a storm just going back to car.

But we never see any coffee. Just a blob of white foam with choc on top.

We want close ups of real coffee like wot Grant and I post.

Yes, it's called a cappuccino!:D

That and macchiato is all I drink.

Well yes, but in my case, with only using a Moka pot, all you'd see is some fairly nondescript brown liquid [no real pressure or crema possible], unlike on your semi-pro machines... So you can choose between looking at that and "a blob of white foam with choc on top";)

That phone has a very good camera. Better than mine by a margin.

Hm the media keep dishing that one out as a reason for the slow down in mobile sales but I still think they are moving forward pretty fast.

Display tech is amazing now. Just go and use a OnePlus 7 Pro for a few minutes.

Samsung should have a graphene battery Smartphone out soon that charges crazy quick with much better capacity.

CPU/GPUs are blindingly quick and again I say try a OnePlus 7 Pro for evidence.

Some lesser know Chinese phones are offering crazy good hardware for very little money.

Save masses by buying direct from China using AliExpress with no import tax to pay.

Then there's foldable stuff etc etc. Still a lot going on I think.

You can only really make an Americano with them, no espressos and crema here, but it's the best Americano IMO. Different flavour profile to a machine, and better (and much more convenient) than an Aeropress, which is currently sitting sad in my cupboard. It's a fiver for one of the V60 "02" large drippers (the "01" is too small), give it a go!

Moving the conversation back to coffee ...................................

This video from James Hoffmann about warming the coffee beans piqued my interest:

https://youtu.be/yXCboVCDHLw

My coffee beans are kept in the freezer and defrosted only when I want to make a brew. Normally, I'll measure out the right quantity (usually 18g) and let the beans come up to room temperature, usually while the Nuova Simonelli Oscar II warms up. So, inspired by this video I did some experimentation with warming the beans, from frozen, in a small blini pan on the hob (set low), rather than the microwave technique in the video. After some experimentation, the results have been rather wonderful, but the key to success is just warming the beans enough to bring their temperature up to around 30 degrees centigrade, then grinding them for immediate use.

So, worth experimenting with this, but don't let the beans get too warm.

I keep mine in freezer for my overstock, and my using stuff in fridge. I blend up enough for 2 days at a time from there. The coffee warms up in the grinder so ive not bothered trying this as of yet:eyebrows:

Arse gravy refers to your take on filter, vacuum or cafietiere coffee I take it, because that's pretty much what it always looks like. Whilst any of those methods can be OK, they never really float my boat no matter how good the coffee. High pressure extraction is where it is at IMHO.

Lol - the "arse gravy" remark was of course tongue-in-cheek, but it did look a little 'cloudy', which isn't what I'm used to from that type of coffee. I certainly prefer the look of what I make at home, either in a Moka pot or cafetiere, but I'm not denying that what you had was tasty:)
