The off-putting thing about their website is the flowery language describing their coffee. I'd rather decide myself what any specific coffee tastes like, simply by being told which beans are used!
Marco. If you like deep, dark roasts, I am not sure you will find them at many speciality roasters. They tend to favour medium roasts.
Rave's Italian blend is pretty dark..https://ravecoffee.co.uk/collections/coffee-bean-blends/products/the-italian-job-blend?variant=3150416248858
The taste is good as is crema. im exploring this blended with the ones I got recently that are really dark. 70/30 to Italy at moment. seems to be the sweet spot. can send you some if you want.
They are all at it, though.
The best way to see if it is close to their description or not is a neat Espresso shot I reckon.
I agree. Don't know if they're 'all at it', though. The coffee suppliers I've used so far haven't been guilty of spouting that bollox...
It's so annoying, and rather like being told, when buying cables from a hi-fi seller that 'Cable A', priced at £49.99, sounds 'mellifluously sweet with subtle overtones of low-frequency warmth', whilst 'Cable B', priced at £99.99, sounds 'pleasantly fresh with a hint of top-end honey'.
Erm, ferk off!:wanker:
Just tell us which beans are used, assholes, and *we* will decide what the taste is like!!:exactly:
Marco,

The colour of the roast doesn't overly worry me; it's the flavour that counts (although I know that both are intrinsically linked). In that respect, it's *got* to be smooth and rich, without too much bitterness/acidity.
Marco.
Blends usually have some robusta in. Usually Indian and s American. Not many single origin beans will be robusta. Its too potent in sour caffeine.
Twi e the strength of aribica beans that also have all the sweet lipids. That's why good arabica is dear and robusta, which is easy to grow is cheap
Any chance of translating that into English?;)
:popcorn::popcorn:

Marco.
missed out a c.. twice instead of twi e. just the phone pad... oh and an i instead of an a in arabica
Ah, I see... Why don't you use your lappy instead, with a proper keyboard? Your 'posting station' downstairs is suitably equipped!:)
And even in bed, you can still use a lappy... Don't know how you can be arsed typing on a phone. It'd do my box in.
Still don't get what you were trying to say, in terms of "sweet lipids", even with your explanation of the missing/wrong letters:hmm:
Marco.
lipids are hydrocarbon molecules. they are in the oils extract from coffee; arabica lipids are much sweeter than robusta, hence its better taste. arabica also only contains about half the caffeine, and caffeine is bitter.. but robusta produces better crema, and is much cheaper, hence why its used both as a crema boost and a bulking agent. too much and it becomes bitter tho.
lipids are hydrocarbon molecules.
Ah I see now.... Thanks for that info. The main reason why I hadn't a scooby what you meant, was because I had no idea what lipids were!
I thought it was another typo...:)
Marco.
P.S Why do you type on your phone more than your lappy? You'd make less mistakes if you used a proper keyboard.

use phone in bed. lappy is too cumbersome. if i remember i take ipad up, but usually forget. new phone has a biggish screen so its easier, but the bottom letters often become a space if im not seeing too well. gave my iphone to grandson as his packed up. he was delighted. the bigger screen helps a lot, plus sound wise the sony experia is top notch. it was a good buy; my son got one too just after xmas in sale. It used to be their flagship.
Time for another coffee i think....then off to docs.

Okies, dude - I get ya:)
Still need to get myself a smartphone (simply for playing choons in the car, by pairing it with the head unit, instead of just using CDs), but am struggling to find the motivation! I need someone to give me a 'shove', in the right way...;)

Looked fine Justin.

I basically reckon I am a fan of a very small amount of microwaved milk, with a double shot.
Or a thermos full of milk and a double shot.
The first is an intense experience that is too short but with great beans can taste really special.
The second allows you to savour a coffee over an hour or two.
Standard lattes, cappuccinos etc in a cup are very nice, just not as good as the first two options.
Grant that really does look great.
This mornings effort has come out well after initial problems with steaming. Managed to save it
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190124/7a34204df99c58d288c0ba9945c66602.jpg
This is an unstyled, double shot into about a centimetre of the local milkman's milk.
What that means is there has been no effort to make it look nice. This is it. It is how such an approach appears. That said each time you do it, it comes out differently. Taste wise and lookswise.
This is Extract's Cast Iron. And it tastes excellent.
Two coffees into the order detailed above and I am thinking these are the most complex tasting beans I have come across. Ever.
EDIT: to be fair, though, HasBean has given me some excellent stuff in the past. The test of time is the hardest one to win.

Version 2. This one is probably more ristretto than espresso.
Need to put the cup in the centre of the drop.

Whatever.
The eye on high resolution reality seems to make this look good.

Just needs a strawberry in the middle and a brolly!:D
When I finish my current 'Master Blend' beans from Coffee Masters, I fancy trying these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00Q0CMKNW?ref=em_1p_1_im&ref_=pe_4107651_351838761
Marco.
Boring dude. Surf some different suppliers.
You may like their stuff but the gambling man probably finds a better source at the expense of a few hiccups on the way.
Oh I fully agree, although I don't know about 'boring'. Thing is, I still haven't quite found my 'goto' beans yet, which I know will give me exactly what I want, day in day out.
Once I find those, I'll experiment and go off the beaten track more, to find the real gems:cool:
I'm also reluctant to make too many mistakes [stuff that doesn't deliver the right taste], and end up with jars full of coffee beans I'll never use...
Marco.
Just made myself an 'espresso', with the Moka pot, placed on top of the wood burner in the lounge... I was surprised at how quickly the coffee brewed, and it tasted fab!:)
I guess that's one way to save electricity.....

Marco.
A 1kg bag is a lot of coffee to go through if it is not to your taste.
Better going to a specialist supplier and trying 4 different types at 250g I think. Would learn more.
I agree. Especially if you know what type of coffee you are looking for.
A 1kg bag is a lot of coffee to go through if it is not to your taste.
Indeed, but a 1kg of beans lasts me nearly 2 months!;)
Plus, it's just me, I don't like any form of wastage, or foodstuffs lying around the house that aren't used, and taking up space. I don't do 'failed experiments'... It's rather like hi-fi equipment: if I've got it, it gets used or it's out the door. I'm no hoarder.
Marco.

Not a bad idea, so will bear that in mind:)

Yup, I think I'll be making it that way more often!:)

Great texture to the colour. Like rippling paint
Great texture to the colour. Like rippling paintI think it's like the milk and coffee haven't yet decided to get it together just yet. You can clearly see the separation.
For the two or three swigs that something like that is worth, the investment in the tools to create it is almost with it. Almost, but not quite.
My next coffee extractor must have variable temperature, pressure and flow rate control
I clearly don't want much.
Not much lol [emoji23]. My wee machine suffices. Not especially flexible but produces decent stuff regularly. That's half the battle.
The thing I think is missing from coffee machines is a simple pot that adjusts pressure to control flow rate.
So you fucked up the tamping for instance. Or got too fine a grind. Compensate by twiddling the pressure pot. Which usually just isn't there.
Unless it is. I haven't looked around enough for contemporary machines that can do it.
Think a few do. ECM do them. It's a screw that you adj to various nos that represent pressure. Usually set at 9 but can be moved. Maybe the classika

What I mean is simple easy to access on the fly instantly reacting to user input pressure control. Not some hard to access screw.
As the Bishop said to the actress.

I confess to getting one a few weeks ago. Really enjoying it.

Seeing as I mentioned my La Pavoni earlier here are some pics.
1st an expresso from just my 2nd attempt with this new-to-me machine. It's vintage May 1997 btw. La Pavs require quite a lot of manual work and research to make a consistently good coffee.
2nd the kit required included thermocouple temp gauge, scales, tamper, distribution tool etc
3rd an early flat white, art may come later!
4th La Pavoni

Yep, Lido E T. They say the grinder is more important than the coffee machine. I'd love a Niche Zero for an easier life (simpler adjustment, low/zero retention, of course...electric) but I don't like the £500 price tag but I know I will succumb.

ive got a lido 3. great grinder but with my neck issue it was becoming difficult to turn. ive got a sage smart grinder now. works very well and consistent.
@Clive what are the RAVE beans you have there?
I highly recommend Rave. Everything we have had from them has been great. Favourites so far are their Colombia Suarez Project, and even better the Kenya Tinganga Estate.
20% off first order, and I think I might get a referral boost if anyone buys through the link.

Those beans were Fudge, fab with milk. I love Italian Job, Chatswood, great for expresso and with milk. Signature I find a little less inspiring but very drinkable but my wife likes it. I also have some Columbia Suarez and El Salvador Los Nogales Soaked but in truth I prefer dark to medium roasts.
I'm very pleased with Rave though the postage is a little pricey, in part due to the envelope I suppose.
BTW I need to work on my microfoam....I think I know where I was going wrong. Also the 3 hole tip on the La Pav may not be ideal, some replace with a single hole one.

Buy 2KG and stick one in the freezer, that's what we do!

That's sort of how I ended up with 5 x 250g packs last time so I could try a few out. Maybe their subscription is a way to go but I need to check our consumption rate.

Rave. I am a bit lost on Rave. I thought quite good and that's it. I think they are well over-hyped, way too much raving going on:D
HasBean and Extract are both considerably better.
IMHO of course. There's no accounting for taste buds or ears it would seem.

HasBean is on my list to try. What sort of coffee do you like? I like dark roast and drink both espresso and flat white. I like Rave's Italian Job in particular as well as Fudge. I think it's a Robusta in the IJ that I like. Is there a HasBean equivalent I should try? Blake or Jailbreak?
Original Espresso from Extract?
HasBean, Extract and the Rave stuff I had - 4 bags - are all what I would call medium roasts.
I have never had a dark roast from HasBean, and I have used them for a lot of years.
I would still try either though I'd I were you. Get the HasBean starter pack or choose a few bags from Extract. If Extract get Dr Strangelove. That is the most complex coffee I have ever come across.
The Climpson's stuff of yours I didn't get on with.
You might find the same with my recommendations but at least you will have tried something else.
My brother never seemed keen on HasBean. Mind you he likes his coffee roasted to oblivion. He roasts his own from Monsoon Malabar green beans. We bought him a coffee roaster.
Used to drink monsoon. Prefer the Italian blend too now but stick 30% of a dark one. Forgot its name. A blended blend. Works and just right mix for me.
Just order two bags of Extract. P&P is free. Dr Strangelove and Rocket Espresso.
Don't be a pussy and duck out...
Can always blend if no likey.
I may get some next time I am back in Bristol.
They don’t ship abroad.
Intend getting some and have the site marked. But at moment I've got way too many beans. 2kg plus.
Gratton road - near the scrap yard?

Yes. You can see it from the bottom of the M32 that's how I first knew it was there.
Cool. It’s on the way to the airport from my parents.

Jim's lavvazza beans came. Purged grinder and put some of these in. First signs were they grind slightly bigger grain, but they are also lighter roasted.

Jim's lavvazza beans came. Purged grinder and put some of these in. First signs were they grind slightly bigger grain, but they are also lighter roasted.

Sweet. That goats milk you use looks almost sculptable.
I'll be ordering a kilo of the Crema e Aroma next time I order some beans.
I still have 3.5Kg in stock, so it will be a while.
I really need to get a Niche Zero so I can have a better variety during the week.

I must clear out my collection of espresso machines - under my desk I have the Nuova Simonelli Oscar 1 that preceded this machine, and a Gaggia Classic which I've had for years, and like an old Morris Minor can be kept going ad-infinitum at minimal cost. I've also got a Gaggia MDF grinder and a Nuova Simonelli Grinta MMT, but I find the Sage to be more convenient.

Nuova Simonelli Oscar II (https://www.elektros.it/ru/en/oscar_II_nuova-Simonelli/oscar-II-black.html). Like the original Oscar I it is a scaled down version of a commercial machine, with a large(ish) 1.5 litre boiler for steam and a heat exchange system for the brew head. Both these Oscar machines produce steam just like a large commercial machine, which means it's easy to produce a nice creamy microfoam, even with milk alternatives like the Oatly Whole that I use, but clearly proper whole milk is always best for latte art. Both my Oscars have over pressure valve (OPV) and pressurestat mods from www.elektros.it , who I can heartily recommend for machines and parts.

good price for such a good machine
Hugo - first proper latte art I have seen posted on here. Well done!
Gotta learn someday.
Not to deride Grant's efforts, of course, but that's a proper pour. Respect.

Thanks - my first effort this morning was much better!
Adam - to milk an oat you need very slender fingers, with extraordinary strength! To be serious, though, this Oatly stuff seems to suit my innards better than real milk, and you can coax a quite reasonable textured foam out of it, with the Oscar II.
Flat white.

Rave's Italian blend is pretty dark..https://ravecoffee.co.uk/collections/coffee-bean-blends/products/the-italian-job-blend?variant=3150416248858
The taste is good as is crema. im exploring this blended with the ones I got recently that are really dark. 70/30 to Italy at moment. seems to be the sweet spot. can send you some if you want.
We've just opened a bag of Italian Blend on your recommendation, very nice. Also had a bag of Fudge blend which was also very nice. We have a lot of lavazza crema e aroma which we think is very good value although I prefer Illy beans but they are a bit pricey. We prefer the Rave beans to the Lavazza but in part that may be simply because it is nice to have a change. Will try some Extract beans next as is local.

I got good results
Bought a KG of Jim's reco. A good Italian engineer friend of mine liked Illy a lot. Done those a few times. Never enamoured.
Done a few Lavazzas but not this one. Gonna treat it as a good value backstop. Unless proven otherwise.
Dr Strangelove by Extract of Bristol is my current high end recommendation at the mo. With a warning. Each cup of it you make will taste different. Evidently it is called Dr Strangelove for a reason.
It may need a month to start to stabalise. Well, that's my theory so far. More experience required.
That said, I wouldn't want to change it in any way.
That BB date is amazing. Presumably unopened before then. Do you believe it?

*Mods - please move this if it should go elsewhere*
I really have to clear out some of my coffee gear, so the following items are for sale:
1. Gaggia Classic. New original spec Ulka pump just fitted (the old one had seized in storage). Rancilio Silvia steam wand. Otherwise well-loved and in good condition. No original box. Asking £95 including UK delivery.
https://i.imgur.com/jKHzNbb.jpg?1https://i.imgur.com/2XuBCRH.jpg?1
2. Gaggia MDF Grinder. SOLD
3. Nuova Simonelli Oscar I. This is a chunkier thing that it may appear, so see the 5 litre water bottle for size comparison and the kettle behind it. The Oscar looks plain and boring but is in fact a shrunken version of a professional boiler/heat exchanger espresso machine, so it has a large 1.5 litre boiler the brew head is heated by conduction from the boiler, not by direct electric heating. This one has had a couple of worthwhile mods from Elektros in Italy: the main boiler pressurestat has been replaced with a much more reliable Sirai unit ( https://www.elektros.it/ru/en/Oscar_modification_Kit/kit-pressostato-professionale-sirai-p302-6.html ); and it has an over-pressure valve (OPV) conversion which I have set for 9 Bar at the brewhead, but the OPV is adjustable (https://www.elektros.it/ru/en/Oscar_modification_Kit/kit-opv-kit-valvola-antivuoto-caldaia-predisposta.html ). This Oscar I has been replaced here by an Oscar II which is smarter looking and has a better steam wand, but actually this one is by far my best machine, giving really consistent results with every shot. The 1.5 litre boiler means loads of steam available for fine milk texturing.
I'm asking £225 for the Oscar I, including UK shipping.

This cost 25p at Waitrose.
Crazy fresh, super good sourdough going silly cheap.

Still, I am seriously impressed. Somebody knows what they are doing here.

If you feel like giving some new beans a go mate, I'd thoroughly recommend these Columbian beans: beautifully rich tasting, almost creamy, and with just the right amount of acidity, and the rich taste lingers for ages on the palate - lovely stuff!
Marco.
Yo Granty, thought you might've commented?:)
Marco.
Not even up yet. Legs no worky. Yup sounds like a nice bean. Once I've used mine up might get some
Lol - I posted that at tea time last night!;)
Glad to see you're getting a bit of sleep now, rather than being kept awake in the early hours of the morning. And yes, I'd thoroughly recommend those Columbian beans to you, Justers or anyone else who's into top-notch coffee.
I'm now convinced that South American beans (light brown in colour) are much more to my taste than African beans, which are darker and more bitter. It's almost like a milk vs. dark chocolate thing, with South American beans akin to Swiss milk chocolate, and African, a Bournville bar...
These Columbians just produce a smooth, rich and very tasty coffee, with none of the 'astringent' quality that generally exists with the African variety, although I may grind in a small amount of those with the Columbian, just to see what kind of mix that produces.
However, for the moment, the Columbian beans, from Poblado Coffi, are my favs. Local Welsh company too, which ticks an important box for me, and the roasting date printed on the back was only two days before the date I received them, so the beans were super-fresh (and smelled it too, when the bag was opened), which I know is important to you!
Right, it's time to make some coffee now, and prepare breakfast!

Cheers, it has a nice crust, lol!;) It's Polish bread I get from the local Polish supermarket and deli, and superb for making toast.
Btw, if you like really nice jam and marmalade, as I do, and don't have time to make your own, then I thoroughly recommend the range from Thursday Cottage, which I order online: https://www.thursday-cottage.com/products/jams/
Interesting story and video on what they're about and how they started here: https://www.thursday-cottage.com/about-us/

Marco.Well there are avid box swappers in hi-fi. I guess I am a fairly continual coffee swapper.
After 250g of anything I want to swap, really.
I have noticed supermarket coffee seems to be dropping in volume as a method of putting up the price. So many are doing 200g in beans where it was once 250g. Happening a lot in Waitrose.
This should make mail order look like a more attractive option for many. Mind you Waitrose is just expensive full stop.
Glad you like your beans, dude.
Interesting point. I seem to add the occasional bag these days, lik e the stereo. I won't risk the term hifi
Pain giving you problems again, mate? Nightmare... With yesterday's 'lie in' until 9am, I thought you were back to getting a decent sleep:(
Love the idea of a 'coffee swapper':D I'm like that with wine. I never buy cases of all the same type, no matter how much I love the wine - always mixed cases, individual bottles, or very occasionally if a wine is knockout good, half a case, otherwise I'd get bored drinking the same stuff.
However... It's much easier to find wine that I like, than coffee, possibly because I know much more about it, but also because the variety of different wines available is much larger then that of coffee beans, and personally I couldn't be arsed trying all sorts of different beans, running the risk of wasting bags of them because I don't like the taste.
Therefore, I like to have a 'go to' safe choice of beans, which I know consistently deliver a flavour I like, then dabble occasionally with other (more artisanal) stuff, such as I did with those from Poblado Coffi, and if I like them, add them to my selection:)
Marco.
yeah, was up a while. still eventually got back after some meds. will be coffee time soon
Aye, I'm just off to do mine:)

I should stay away from this thread as it’s torture! I’m still waiting for a response from DeLonghi about fixing my machine so I haven’t had any cappuccinos or lattes at home for weeks... :(

Nice and 'caramelly', that one. Almost 'toffee-like':)
Just made breakfast... Usual cappuccino, using whole milk delivered fresh from our local dairy, and toast made from Polish bread, with beautifully creamy Polish 'country style' butter, and gorgeous organic jams from Thursday Cottage. This is before the butter and jam were applied:

And afterwards:

Also had a nice big glass of COMPAL Fresh Mango juice, from the local Portuguese deli, which I forgot to include in the pic. For details see here: https://compal.pt/mundo-oquefazemos-sumosenectares.php?
Was lurvely!
Marco.
nice. not seen that butter..polish is it?
Yup, from the same supermarket we get the bread. Awesome stuff mate. Really creamy, and just lovely when melted on top of hot toast, and a fraction of what you'll pay for the likes of the President French stuff in Sainsbury's, or other 'speciality' butters:)
Marco.
tesco here do a fair amount of polish stuff, as we have a large community.. used to be a deli in town too, but i dont really get into town now so dont know if its still there
Cool.. Would be worth having a look next time you're there. I love it because the Polish stuff suits my continental tastes in food (as near to Italian as I can get here), and it's priced sensibly for the Polish community, not ridiculously expensively as bread like this often is, if bought from 'artisan bakeries' or 'posh' delis...
I also love it because it's hard to find anything like it in UK supermarkets. Sour dough loaves are about the closest, but still not the same. I like bread with a nice thick/hard crust, as it's where most of the flavour is!
We get all sorts of stuff from there. It's called Chata Polska. It's a chain of Polish supermarkets. This is the one in Wrexham: https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x487ac71ad0066acf:0x7dac689e6bc245dd!2m22!2 m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m16!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m 1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!2m2!1m1!1e6!3m1!7e11 5!4shttps://lh5.googleusercontent.com/p/AF1QipM5yhq1ttMrUXG1uReXkjPuAK15rZfonaTxrrLe%3Dw21 3-h160-k-no!5schata+polska+wrexham+-+Google+Search&imagekey=!1e10!2sAF1QipM5yhq1ttMrUXG1uReXkjPuAK15r ZfonaTxrrLe&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjz6fWS7tbhAhX2QhUIHVr_AaUQoiowCnoECAoQB g
They do a wonderful selection of cold meats too, plus Polish beer (some great stuff amongst it) and a superb array of different types of pasta.
Marco.
think there is one in Armadale. Bratek deli i think.
Nice one. I'd defo check it out mate, when you get the chance. You'll probably find some nice stuff in there:)
Marco.

Marco. The best bread you can get is homemade.
No question about it once you get good. It can be truly remarkable. Though Artisans can get close it is rare that they do.
That said a quid+ for that Polish loaf is good if you like it.
It's very good indeed Justers, trust me. The bread is baked fresh on the premises every morning (they have an area at the back of the shop where that's done).
We've been here before with home-made bread. I fully agree, but Del has enough to do (and cooks plenty) already, without starting to bake bread too, and I have no inclination to make it myself.
Your home-made bread always looks lovely, though!
Marco.
Already been out and done my jobs, so an early coffee for me.

Nice coffee, Grant. Check out my latest exploits on the food thread......
Marco.
As an espresso, it doesn't really get any better, Justers!:)
Triple bottomless portafilter shot.:bum:
I try to vary the way I make stuff for visual stimulation and variation.
One point to note is that if I made that with my old Gaggia Classic, it would have been close to undrinkable. Far to high an extraction pressure for true espresso. Works with the Rocket.
That said, the Gaggia's higher pressure worked well with variations on milky coffees. It some ways I miss it. The new Gaggia machines are quite different, though, apparently, which has people searching for the old ones.
As good as it gets here usually 3/4 Red, 1/4 Black to give a bit of bite. No Crema or whatever you call it :ner:

Good looking cafetière coffee, John. I like a nice one of those now and then. Much lighter than an espresso, but if done right, still rich and tasty!:)

Yup, nothing wrong with a pot of that stuff, especially when you want more quantity, and a 'longer' drink:)
Anyway, today's toast and cappuccino for breakfast:
