Ah, shweety, I always enjoy seeing your thick, creamy spurts!:eyebrows:
Must post one up of my own later...
Btw, I was out for lunch with my dad yesterday at a nice little country pub, and we finished off with a couple of double espressos, only to find out that (unbeknown to me) there was a specialist coffee roasting company just down the road!
See here: https://lostbarncoffee.co.uk/product-category/whole-beans/
We had their '1839 Espresso Blend' and it was lovely, but as you can see from their shop, they've got some other interesting stuff! It's bad timing, unfortunately, as I've just had a load in from my usual supplier, but as soon as that's finished I'll be trying some beans from Lost Barn.
The good thing is, I can collect it from their shop, which is only a 15-min drive from my house, thus save on carriage charges!:)
Marco,
Just made one actually.

looks pricey..
A little, but if the quality is good, and remember there'll be no postage costs!:)
Marco.
I only drink black coffee (fresh not instant) so it’s not much to look at (freshly ground Rich Italian from Taylor’s of Harrogate today) but do you like my “weekend” mug? [emoji846]

What Espresso machines y'all using?
Figure I've had enough Nescafe in my life.
Enjoyed my Mokka pot, up till "someone" (i.e. Me) lost the internal filter.
Kettles on the fritz too, its time.
Have a good grinder already, Sage smart grinder pro, so that box already ticked.
Have a couple of specific models in mind, and will be speaking with the guys at Bella Barista on whats best for me.
Been reading forums too, getting a general picture of it all.
Curious what general usage of the AOS Coffee Mafia is.
Ta.
Can't help you there Gary as I never drink expresso.
I use a Mokka pot and the beans come from Cameroon which I will grind, enough for a few days at a time.
But I'm sure either Grant or Marco will regale you with the recommended paraphernalia needed to make espresso coffee.
Hard to bypass sage machines and this dual boiler will do you nicely; at a price. ive the cheaper one and its been faultless really.

or if you want italian style tubes etc and german manufacture then this ecm is a good un and on my list.

Nice... Is it vintage? Looks like it:)
Btw, your fresh black coffee looks really nice (I can tell by the depth of the colour, that it'll have had a rich flavour). The only reason we can make ours look 'fancy' is because being pressurised machines, they develop crema, and also nice frothy milk if you like cappuccinos!
But, as Gaz knows with his Moka pot, you can still make tasty black coffee without a thick crema.
Marco.
Yup, wot Grant says... Since you've got a Sage girnder, Gaz, I'd go for a matching coffee machine. The only reason I bought the Smegster is because I find it more stylish, which for us (princess especially), in our type of kitchen, is important - and it also makes a great cup of coffee:

Marco.
It'll be a dual boiler type anyway I think,
looked at heat exchanger units, swings and roundabouts, but like the idea of fast heat up in the morning, and no messing about waiting for steam to get up to pressure.
Those E61 grouphead Italian machines DO look nice though, I like the old school, hands on "Flood the Engine room" look they have. :)
One of the machines I looked last time I was shopping at was the Rocket Appartamento, but hitting the coffee forums recently its not quite as big a deal as it was a couple of years ago, when I last looked at these.
Got a mokka pot instead to see if I had the level of "arsedness" to go down the espresso route.
Grinding beans n stuff, and its absolutely worth it.
Convenience, flexibility and consistency is what I'm looking at.
Low maintenance is a factor too, I know these aren't plug n play, but some need more faff than others, the Heat Exchangers in particular it seems to me.
So dual boiler it is.
Smeg machine looks a nice bit of kit, can appreciate the design, especially in black.
all of my other appliances in the kitchen are black also.

Marco.
they do do the sage dual in black but its rare.
tbh the standard sage ive got is really all you need. its quick enough and very reliable. for money its best machine on market

It's a great machine, mate. I'm just not into the rather 'samey' stainless steel look of most coffee makers. As a coffee maker though, the Sage is better:)
Marco.

if youve a smart kitchen or are in it all time then yes getting it all looking matced etc is great; i'd probably do same. but im not in kitchen that much so it can be any colour for me. the shiney stainless and all the pipes look great, but tbh a sage does job just as well; maybe better for most of us that are not baristas
I would always be wary of consuming anything from something called "SMEG". In particular the cream off the top of the milk you have stored in your SMEG refrigerator! :D
Lol yes, but what if you're a fan of Red Dwarf?:D
Marco.

As I said, I can't fault the Sage's coffee-making credentials, but for me, all stainless steel-made coffee machines (within the same price bracket) look too much the same, and you know we like to be different, which is why ours is red!:D
Gaz, being a bit of a style-ista (anyone who drives an Alfa has a certain panache), might like the Smeg, in black. As a coffee maker, I'd say it's 90% as good as the Sage, really only being a little let down by the quality of its milk frother, which needs 'worked at' a little, in order to produce similar results to the Sage.
Just my view:cool:
Marco.
they do do the sage dual in black but its rare.
That's the problem with homogenizing everything, in order to (I guess understandably) cut costs, rather than offering people real choice. I think the Smeg comes in at least four different colours I can think of.
Of course for many, including your good self, that's a non-issue, but Del and I both spend an inordinate amount of time in the kitchen, and of course spent a lot of dosh designing it from scratch to our spec, and so for us it's important that all the little 'knick-knacks', as it were, fit in aesthetically with the look we've created:)
Marco.
But I am a fan of Red Dwarf. Hence my comment on the word "smeg": 'smeg head' and 'smegging' were Dave Lister's favourite nominative and adjectival expletives, etymologically derived from smegma.
It's just unfortunate that the Italian company Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla abbreviated the name to SMEG, without checking for any embarrassing connotations.
(The manufacturer of the cough sweets known as 'Zubes' had to change the name, because of the advertising slogan "Go suck a Zube", which was considered offensive in certain Middle Eastern countries: 'zube' being a vulgar colloquialism for penis. )
Lol - I know, there's lots of that stuff around... In Italy, back in the 80s, there was a popular make of gum, called 'BUM', which came in a little plastic bubble container, housing a free gift (for kids).
And on the outside, it read (translated from Italian): 'Have a look inside your 'BUM' for a big surprise!!':D

 Now that did make me laugh out loud! Good one Marco.
Lol, we aim to please:D
Marco.
Not forgetting "AIDS" diet supplements in the 80's.
Things kinda happened, and they had to have a rethink branding wise!
I use a Delonghi Dedica EC685M. Cheap, easy and doesn't take up much space - also available in red :)

The mugs were from a lovely little grockle shop in North Norfolk last year on holiday, one for each of us for our initials.

I don’t like milk or cream except in cooking and so I just use a metal double walled cafetière - keeps it nice and warm.
(This is who makes the mugs: https://yvonneellen.com/ )
Fancy!
Looks the biz Alex.

Nice - I like quirky, handmade things. In terms of the cream thing though, you do realise that 'crema' has nothing to do with the cream you're talking about?;)
Marco.

Marco.
Yes of course, I understand a crema is from the pressure, but not something I’m really bothered with as it sort of looks a bit dairy! Wouldn’t bother me in a cafe or restaurant but not something I particularly aspire to at home. I have thought about a bean to cup machine but Sue doesn’t like fresh coffee so never really worried as I am happy with my pot. [emoji846]
Lol - no worries, it's all down to your own preference. However, crema isn't 'dairy'; it's really just an indication of a richly-flavoured coffee, freshly ground with good beans. Within a few sips, the crema (what's left of it that hasn't stuck to the sides of the cup) mostly disappears, so there's not much sensation of 'cream':)
Marco.
Dark morning in livingroom but coffee is light.

Hey Grant,
Any reccies for things like Tampers, mats, milk jugs and the like?
Hey Grant,
Any reccies for things like Tampers, mats, milk jugs and the like?
these are good. you get them different diameters. they are depth adjustable. been using one for a while along with the tamper that comes with the sage which is quite good.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08BG2LY5Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
a knock box is worth getting too.
Remember though, lest Gaz gets the wrong idea, that what you've linked to (and I agree is good, as I've also got one) is a coffee distributor, not really a tamper, which as you've stated, for best results, needs used in conjunction with a dedicated tamper!:)
For a tamper I use something very similar to this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Calibrated-Coffee-Tamper-51mm-Espresso/dp/B07FF34LGH/ref=asc_df_B07FF34LGH/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=232026297330&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3020123965473302578&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007464&hvtargid=pla-488598538689&psc=1
Calibrated I find is best, as it means you exert the same amount of pressure on the coffee grinds, time after time (rather than varied with a non-calibrated design, meaning that the harder or lighter you press, the stronger or weaker the strength of the coffee), thus giving more consistent results.
As for milk jugs, I use one of these, which is really solid and nicely made: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bialetti-Bricco-Stainless-Steel-Silver/dp/B06ZXSY3H5/ref=asc_df_B06ZXSY3H5/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=256194461012&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16638906336026221488&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007464&hvtargid=pla-422519639671&psc=1
Marco.
tbh it does tamp if adjusted deep enough but i do start and finish with another tamper anyway.
Well, it flattens the grinds a little in use, if that's what you mean, but for me isn't heavy enough to work effectively as a standalone tamper, no matter how deeply adjusted.
Marco.
Thanks chaps.
From Barista vids watched online, a lot of them use both?
Probably the route for me.
@marco,
That Bialetti milk jug looks great,
nice Italian design from a famous Italian coffee company.
Used one of their manual stovetop milk frothers with my Mokka pot, great quality too.
@Grant
thanks mate, 1 question about the distributor you linked to?
If I went for, say, a 58mm grouphead machine, does the diameter of it matter?
think your Sage is 54m wondering if for a 58.. it might not be suitable?
Ta both.
Thanks chaps.

you would get a bigger one. 58mm if thats the inside diameter. there are lots of ones like one i showed. i use a tamper to get the coffee just under the rim then the distributer set to depth i want. a quick bang on surface, then use tamper for a press and polish.
"Quick bang on the Surface" ya say?
Thanks chaps.
From Barista vids watched online, a lot of them use both?
Probably the route for me.
From my experience, using both is the way to go for best results. Therefore, a distributor (to distribute the grains evenly in the filter basket, so that you get a more even and consistent pour) and a calibrated tamper (must be same diameter as the filter basket used for the machine) for compressing the grains with a consistent pressure, to extract maximum flavour and crema.

Yup, and the milk jug has a nice thinly tapered spout, which is ideal for creating latte art, if you get into that, but also for producing a nice silky finish with your frothed milk.
@Grant
thanks mate, 1 question about the distributor you linked to?

If Grant hasn't answered already by the time I post this reply, then your distributor or tamper MUST be the same diameter as the filter basket, which fits the 'group head' of your machine, so make sure that's the case before you buy either!:)
Marco.
"Quick bang on the Surface" ya say?
My method is quite different from Grant's, although I couldn't say if it's better or worse, but it works well for me. If you're interested, let me know:)
Marco.
"Quick bang on the Surface" ya say?Ya bang porta on table. It allows any grains that have gone up side to fall back then a quick press and polish with a tamper and it's bang on. I find pressing with tamper won't make it compress more as the gadget if adjusted right and correct dose used it will be tight
But you can try if you want. Obviously if coffee is ground finer it will compress more but will also increase resistance to water
It's a fine line
Here's one of my efforts, to show you what the Smegster can do:

a 58mm one. there will be more tho.

Ok,
Been hitting coffee forums big chunk of my day today (off work for Sept weekend),
decided whats important and works for me ...and whats irrelevant.
Head hurts from staring at a screen,
but just pulled the trigger on a thing.
Ticks all my boxes, took a while but I got there.
Photo up when it arrives. (Its Italian 'natch.)
:)
Lol - thought you might go Italian... Let us know how you get on. Italian car, Italian espresso machine... Now you just need an Italian girlfriend!
I warn you though, they can be *very* high maintenance:eyebrows:
Anyway, I take it this was a 'no':

Lol - perhaps... But as a total novice, would he be able to use it?:D;)
One of my pet hates are guys who love 'boys toys' (mainly for their looks), but don't know how to use them - especially 'posh' espresso machines that simply end up as ornaments in the kitchen!
If you're going to invest in a machine like that, then don't be a ponce, and MAKE SURE you know how to get the most out of it!!:exactly:

sure he will. i knows gaz and he will go on a course if he needs to... there is a lot to learn, but not all at once
I agree, and that's what I'd expect of him - and if you really want to do it right, there's loads to learn. However, as you know, we've had others here before with 'all the gear and no idea'!;)
Marco.
So am I! :D
Will take a time to get my feet wet with it and get everything dialled in to suit me.
Best practices n such.
Walking before I run.
Stock settings are pretty good though I hear.
Just out of curiosity Marco,
How do you do yours?

Double bonus,

Have 'mad skillz' at picking things up quick, not concerned...it's supposed to be fun, right?
S'all good.

Lovely Italian ornament that ;)
Appartamento in my Top 2.
Simpler to use Marco than it might first look.
Came down to ad/disad_vantages/ of E61 group head machines vs double boiler jobs.
Maintenance, usability, features yada yada.
Close run,
Happy with my choice.

I'll outline my numpty's guide to making espresso later, along with a few tips I've picked up over the last year or so.
Btw, one thing you'll need for best results, no matter how good your tap water is (and hasn't been discussed so far), is a water filter - makes a significant difference to the taste of coffee produced, and also helps keep the internals of your machine clean:)
Marco.

Indeed, as you know the 'wee differences' all add up!:)
For a water filter I just use a BRITA jug, and fill up the coffee machine with water from that: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BRITA-Marella-filter-starter-Fridge/dp/B01MZZI7OI/ref=asc_df_B01MZZI7OI/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=256142088868&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4185680112394676723&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007464&hvtargid=pla-445278992314&psc=1&th=1&psc=1
The other thing, which is *massively* important, and not been discussed much so far, is getting the grind right on your beans, and how best to go about it. That's a whole separate subject on its own!
Also, have you sourced a good supplier yet for your beans?
My advice is to go local, if you can, so that you get them as quickly as possible once they've been roasted, and only use companies that roast to order (print a date on the bag) and ship next day. You'll never get the best results using so-called 'fresh beans' that were roasted sometime back in nineteen-canteen...
That's why you should avoid buying beans from supermarkets!

i use Wogan... https://wogancoffee.com/about-us/
I know they're good, but why not try a supplier in Scotland, since that's where you live?:)
That's why I like to use Welsh ones, or English ones in our area, as we're close to the borders.
Marco.
i like their coffee, and prices too. free delivery too if over i think 20 quid and im always over that. guess after trying umpteen different ones i settled on them(for now) if i find anything better i will try them tho.
there is one in wales ive to try tho
Sure, and all that makes sense. It's just that there's probably a Scottish coffee supplier somewhere that would give you the same quality of products and service:)

last time i looked at local ones they were pricy tbh. did you like my cat bookends in the film thread?
Not seen them mate, will take a look.
You could always give Thomsons a go sometime (the link I gave to Gaz), as they didn't seem pricey, and I can vouch for their quality:)

Happily enjoying (at least) 4 cups a day from it so far!
Given the ammount of Nescafe I hoovered in a day, its already proven itself a good investment.
Grant and I have the same Grinder,
and I asked him for his preferred settings quite a while back when I was enjoying my Mokka pot.
Dialled those settings in this morning and Gosh-a Miley, Lordy Mamma, if the coffee ain't "Ballpark Different" better.
With just the different Grind, I noticed the pressure gauge on the machine went to a different reading.
Bit of Sorcery to this covfeffe stuff!
Further study required.

Disappointing presentation. Should be in a proper espresso cup!
It's a traditional cup from Italy, daftee, made for DOUBLE espressos (wider, so it releases the full aroma of the coffee), therefore it *is* proper!:ner:

Yup, looks MASSIVELY better mate, and really good!
The only thing I'd say is what's caused the pale 'bubbly froth' between the dark coffee and the crema on top? How was the pour when the coffee came out? Looks to me like it's 'spurted' a bit (ooh-er), and you don't want spurts or dribbles...:eyebrows:
Eradicate that (losing the bubbles), and you'll be much closer to perfection:)

Andrade grow good beans. ive had some of theirs before. different roaster tho
Yup, defo. Having done a fair bit of experimenting now, I think I'm more of a South Amercian guy, than African. Just generally prefer the flavour of beans from that part of the world:)
Anyway, this is really for Gaz's benefit... Puck time, and how one should look if you've got the grind and tamping right:
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1024x768q90/923/EY9bIG.jpg
Happiness is nice hard puck!:D Lol... For me, if it doesn't leave the filter basket firmly packed like that, and instead breaks up easily when knocking it out, then you haven't done your prep right! The attention to detail I put into that process will be revealed shortly when I post my espresso-making method.
As you can see, still a lovely sunny evening in Wrexham!

Lol, did it hit the spot mate?:D
Trouble is, even if you perfect the grind, and measure out everything (as I do, and probably you, too) to a notionally 'perfect' level, there are still so many variables, out with of your control, which can alter the final results, either positively or negatively.
For white coffee, for example, the freshness of the milk (and therefore how good it froths when steamed, thus pours) makes a BIG difference. You probably notice that, too. Coffee grinds distribution and tamping is another. However, measuring things out certainly improves consistency and gives you the best chance possible of optimising the results!
Marco.
yup, lots of variables, and they vary at times too from last time. sometimes you are just more in the groove for making too. i pretty much use close to same stuff and same method always, so they are mostly very close but not always; there is that X factor that goes missing, and the Y factor that appear occasionally to make a good one great.
Yup, totally agree... And don't forget the 'KY' factor, and how that maximises the spurt!:D:eyebrows:
Marco.

Much improved mate, and clear progress since last time, and a different world from your first one, so well done!
Nice deep crema, but do you know what's causing the slight 'foaming' effect on top? You don't really want that mate, and instead a nice flat finish:)
Also, is that a deceptively large glass or not - how many shots of espresso are in it? Looks like you'll be awake for most of the night!:D

“Bean” ;) thinking about getting an espresso machine again after not having one for several years, but honestly not sure how much use it will get, so just dipping my toe in the water with this from John Lewis at £70 - came this morning and here’s my first attempt at a double, well, a bit too much water, but tasted good!. Looking forward to experimenting with it.

all you need alex, especially if your not using milk much. if you do go upmarket, i'd say try the sage ones. they are neat, and good; not terribly hard to use etc. they do pretty much everything too, even the lower end ones like mine.
On my third double, gonna be wired by midday! I did do a bit of research, so was happy that at 15 bar it should do the job and saw some really good reviews on it, and I’m very impressed myself with the build quality and of course the coffee! Can’t really go wrong at the price, and of course a 2 year guarantee... :)

yeah, 15 bar is really too much but thats what the cheaper ones run at, although at the brewing head it will likely be nearer 9 as thats the ideal. good pro machines use 9 bar at head, and have valves that open if it goes above 9.. yours may have one too, or pressure may just drop naturally on its way etc.

So Tamzin wanted to learn how to make coffee with the new machine, after researching and printing off a poster of all the different types of coffees here is her first go - a Galao apparently!
No jug (just ordered one, thank you Amazon Prime) so frothed in a mug and did a very good job I reckon! She’s now assembling a list of all the things she needs to make the 36 different variations on her poster, though at 13 the Irish one she’ll be making for Dad!

Tupperwared in the fridge up till now, decided to try storing in cupboard instead.
Different (better) taste.
Wonder if the sudden temperature change when grinding/brewing plays a part here?
Wotcha fink?

i leave the bags out for about 3 weeks then i keep them in bottom of fridge. i fill about 1 large cup of beans into hopper every few days. i mix my beans so i get a bit of the good in them all.. a blend; i use good beans and add some of these to the mix.. these are great in small quantities.

It's taken me quite a while, but finally got around to using bottled water instead of tap.
I have a few bottles of Tesco "Elmhurst" water left over from my latest batch of home-brew (been using it for beer making for my last four batches - smoother, less of the typical home-brew "tang").
Bloody hell - two cups of coffee this morning, better crema and far smoother taste.
I'm going to have to do this from now on, highly recommended :)

good quality water is a game changer guy. i filter my tap water and the filter then adds magnesium to it. this gives a really much better crema and flavour(in my opinion and many others)
these are the filters https://www.amazon.co.uk/BWT-Magnesium-Mineralizer-Patented-Technology/dp/B01KK82ZFO/ref=asc_df_B01KK82ZFO/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=256256967002&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16113087044381713532&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007406&hvtargid=pla-309639604055&psc=1
and jug i use is siilar to this. https://www.amazon.co.uk/BWT-Water-Filter-White-25x11x27-3/dp/B0168OSX9Q/ref=asc_df_B0168OSX9Q/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=255672231529&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3843507555923719266&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007406&hvtargid=pla-421001966613&th=1
they come in different sizes tho
Cheers Grant
I think that I will stick to the bottled water for the moment as I use it quite regularly for my home-brew.
We are quite short on counter top space in the kitchen and my wife gets a bit annoyed with the space that my coffee maker takes up :( - I can get away with bottled as I store that in my log cabin.
I started using bottled water for beer as, apparently, chloramines in tap water can give beer "off flavours", I guess the same is true with coffee:)

its a dosing funnel for a sage portafilter that also has a trigger point for sage smart grinders, that i use. its a great little gadget. it clicks into position on top and its top becomes the top of the original filter. once youve dosed it and partially tamped, you can remove it, and have no spillage
Fair enough - sometimes my thought processes worry me
A nice one for Saturday

Bought a couple bags of this, an old favourite.
Whenever I was up near Perth I used to stop off at a great wee coffee n tea shop,
The Bean Shop.
Didn't have a grinder at the time, so bought pre-ground.
Not been in years,
Just found out they are selling online, happy days.
Picked up a couple of bags of my old favourite, beans this time.
Look fwd to cracking a bag open when the hopper empties.
