Almost down to my last kilo of coffee. It may be tough getting anything good in the near future, as the local coffee shops are shut. It will have to be what ever is in the supermarket.

The Mrs has just come back from the supermarket with 1.5kg of coffee beans. It may not be the best, but any coffee is better than no coffee!
She bought some Malongo “Small producers” 100% Arabica.
Carte Noire Honduras - 100% Arabica
Cafe Meo Biological - 100% Arabica
Beggars can’t be choosers in these times.
I also have my Pellini in stock, so I am good for 2 months now.
Why didn't you just order some good stuff online? The world's still turning, you know, outside of supermarkets....;)

Not much is working outside os supermarkets. I am not sure if the coffee suppliers are still working, and I don’t want to oblige the delivery drivers to have to work. Amazon is only delivering important things, as they have reduced staff.
No seriously, I'd like to know for my own reference.

50 notes i think.. but ive got a bag of segafredo in there too so a bit less... Cheap for a bucket list i guess... could have been go see the grand canyon:D

No worries... In terms of the last bit, is that just for France? Because I ordered a bag of coffee on Amazon on Wednesday [clearly nothing 'important'], and it's coming here today.

Just arrived c/o a nice member off PFM who I bought some bits off. (I don't mean free, I bought them off the company he works for but I'd never heard of them before.)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200320/bf0d2d59e66db944a7346441dcea59d1.jpg
I usually use Rave for my coffee beans (simple DeLonghi machine and Kalita hand grinder), happy with the results - I like the Chatsworth blend if that means anything, chocolate hints.
Question: Should I be looking at other suppliers? I like chocolate, well rounded flavours, no bitterness.
I like what I am getting, but just wondering.
(Coming up for an order in the next week or so).
Guy.

if your happy then no real need to change tbh but i guess no harm in occasionally trying something different as well.
https://pobladocoffi.co.uk/collections are quite good.. wogan too is good although their certificate seems to be now out of date.. i have contacted them re this.
I often mix mine.. getting best out of each coffee imo
Cheers Grant,
just ordered 1kg Sumatra - Atu Lintang beans, it will be interesting to try something different. Bit of a bonus, no postage charge
not tried those so let us know how they are
Will do - I liked the flavour description, so I have high hopes (also liked the description of the company:))

Marco.

In terms of the latter, sounds promising!

Interesting you're now using all-Arabica beans (although the Sega may have some Robusta in).
I'll let you know what that other Segafredo is like (arrived the other day) in comparison with the Espresso Casa. Will probably be starting it in the middle of next week:)

The bags I buy via Amazon are foil lined and have a use by date of 3/11/21 , I just opened bag No4 and the beans are fine still oily , smell devine and tast super , I have no complaints
I buy these Amorcaffe Intenso Taste Coffee Beans
stored in bottom of fridge extends life and flavour a fair bit

Cheers - just looked on Amazon, and none available (hope you got in in time). Lets just hope it's not the start of coffee stockpiling:(

Cheers, Unfortunately not enough room in fridge - particularly with both my daughters at home for the duration.
Must get around to getting a shed with power supply so that we have enough cold storage. As a matter of interest, have you tried freezing beans or is that a "no no"?

sure you can freeze them too as long as you protect them adequetely. vacuum sealing as well works well
Grant,
just remembered, I have tried the Atu Litange - good body and chocolate flavours. Only trouble is that what is described as "raspberry jam" flavour is a bit too tart/acidic for me. I will have to try blending it or using less?
Blend it with a calmer one. Blending is the way I do it. Get the best from each

Grant,
just remembered, I have tried the Atu Litange - good body and chocolate flavours. Only trouble is that what is described as "raspberry jam" flavour is a bit too tart/acidic for me. I will have to try blending it or using less?
Strange; last couple of days the tartness/acidity seems to have dropped - either I have got used to it or the acidity has reduced? Really enjoying it now.
Same cup stretched.

Really enjoying it now.If beans had just been roasted, it can take up to a couple of weeks for them to settle, and dispose of the co2. This produces extra carbonic acid is responsible for much of the flavours. too much can cause a tart taste, or so I'm told. Complex stuff brewing coffee in all its forms alas.
I usually leave beans 10 days to rest on average, but it depends on rate of degassing

The first shot has this super concentrated coffee blob that looks a bit like a Beatle. After further pouring it dissipated into what you see in the second.
I actually drink quite a bit of coffee this way. Just microwave a bit of milk and dump a shot straight on top of it. It's just easy and it does taste good.
Today's offering.

Cheers - bloody useful information, they really seem to have mellowed/settled down. I have gone from thinking "not for me" to being my favoured cup over the last week.
By the way, I love your patterns - any tips on how to?

Looks like a really nice grinder! And that's a great price, mate.
However, I was really looking for a quality hand-grinder, such as Grant's Lido 3, primarily because I enjoy the manual process (and am not short of time to grind beans by hand), but also because I have limited space, in terms of work surfaces, to house an electric grinder, and once I get the new Smeg coffee machine, I won't have room for much else.
Plus, I like the portability of a good hand-grinder, as the combination of that and a Moka pot will come in handy for holidays!
I'll mull it over though, and let you know if I'm interested, thanks:)

Good stuff, mate. On a much smaller scale, I clean out my Moka pot regularly, as I find that if I allow residues of old coffee to build up, it imparts a 'bitter' taste on the coffee I'm making and about to drink.
In that respect, if you really got into clean all the 'nooks and crannies', inside spouts and such like, of your Sage, I wouldn't be surprised if you can taste the difference!:)
On another subject, I was looking at your tamping tool [ever so fondly, I may add:eyebrows:] and wondered how crucial that is to the final results obtained - plus also where to get a good one?
It's something I'll need to consider when becoming a 'Smeghead':D

you need a good tool :eyebrows: when it comes then you need to measure the size of the portafilter to get an exact size; sometimes the size quoted isnt the size of tamper.. I might have one if its a certain size, or you can buy one.
and yes it ran a bit better and tasted a bit better too although that could all be subjective:D

All noted, dude. Will check sizes with the retailer or manufacturer of the Smeg before I get a tamping tool. I'm sure the differences since cleaning you're experiencing are real:)
I'm a clean freak though, especially in the kitchen (Del's the opposite, a messy wee pup), so tend to keep everything pretty clean as a matter of course, even down to polishing the kettle (it's a transparent glass design, which lights up blue in use, see below). Kinda cool but difficult to keep looking clean:doh:

grinding it to right grade(consistently) and without damaging it or burning it.
To help with consistency, a calibrated tamper, such as the Espro, is a great piece of kit.
A distribution tool will also help get a good coffee.
The Pellini coffee I bought is rather nice.

yup i used to too.. lots of nitrogen etc, and good to keep slugs away too.. just a knock box is a great way to get the puck out of the porta filter. you can collect them then add to garden
Yups... Yours are quite solid though, because the grains have been tamped down, so would be best broken up first:)
Marco.
Got pretty much the ideal grind setting dialled-in now, dude: 3.5 turns anticlockwise, from the zero position. Moka pots seem to prefer a finer grind than professional espresso machines (4 turns, or anything above that, is too coarse), so I'll probably have to readjust that setting again when the Smegster arrives:)
However, both the superior quality of the grind, due to the Lido 3 being WAY better than what I had before, and the fact that I'm now grinding beans fresh every morning (rather than the night before, as it used to take ages), has markedly improved the quality of the coffee I'm getting - nice one:thumbsup:
