Lucky you, Grant :). We get plenty of limescale here. I recently fixed a friend's machine whose pump had stopped working because it was so clogged with lime deposits. Needed a new pump. She's now cleaning it regularly... [emoji57] I can tell when ours is starting to get bunged up, as the pump starts getting loud. I suspect the lime may also be responsible for the pressurestat in the Giotto going wonky every 6 to 12 months, but them I hear that's a common complaint from other semi-auto machine owners, not just Giottos. It must be the most miserably designed piece of equipment in a high end domestic appliance ever -- imagine the power regulator in a $3000 amplifier failing every six months? I'm seriously looking at a PID for the machine, even though temp control is fine, just for better reliability.

Cheers,
Svend

Whisky country so soft water and impervious rock. A big volcano just up the hills from my old house. Extinct of course lol
Used to make whisky up the hills too. Big distillery in its day

My Espro tamper has turned up.
I have put it to use already, and have to say I was potentially tamping lighter than with the Espro.

The Espro tampers are terrific. They really take the guesswork out of tamping. We've had one for going on ten years now, and it stills works as good as new. Just remember not to stick it under the faucet - wipe clean only :), the water will ruin it. Hope you like yours.

Sounds wonderful. Too bad the distillery is gone though...as near a plumbed-in supply as you'll ever get :)

Lol - why do you always insist on having the last word, and leaving the discussion in a way that paints me as somehow in the wrong? Sorry, Justin, it just doesn't work like that!

I wanted to try the "shit Lidl machine", so I could find out for myself that it was shit (or not). I form opinions based on MY own experiences, no-one else's. Why you (seemingly) can't accept that, I have no idea...

Oh but it seems that you do, because you keep going on [and on] about it, and furthermore referring to the Miele as "the Bose of the coffee world". Now that may be your opinion of it, which you're entitled to (even though you haven't tried one), but it doesn't have to be mine. Please get that into your head.

Now, if you want to leave it there for now, which is fine by me, then I suggest you don't give me any further cause to challenge your assertions. Cheers!

Marco.

Well, if you think making threats is cool, that's a permanent goodbye from me.

That didn't look exactly threatening to me. Drawing conclusions I think.

Marco
29-11-2017, 00:08
Threats? What on earth are you on about, Justin?

All I'm saying is that if you're going to continue asserting that the Miele machine I'm possibly interested in buying is "the bose of the coffee world", and such like, then I will continue to disagree, by offering my counter opinion. The fact is, my choice doesn't need to meet with your approval.

I suggest you take a chill pill, that we just agree to disagree on this matter, and come back when you're in a better mood!

Marco.

Spot on!:)
I reckon a manual coffee machine vs bean to cup is a bit like vinyl vs streaming.
One is a bit of a long winded, expensive process which gives great results when you get it right, the other gives you something at a touch of a button, but misses some "Soul".

It was rather nice.
I think I need a grinder which I can use to single dose with.

The Sage SmartGrinder Pro is very good indeed. Mine is very easy to set up for consistent single doses - the control panel allows very fine adjustment of grind and time; also the conical burr grinder means that if I put a measured weight of beans in the hopper, all of them pass down through the burrs and into the receptacle underneath, which is not something that happens with flat plate grinders. By far the best grinder that I've owned, and much better than my Gaggia MDF and Nuova Simonelli Grinta MMT.

There is always some retention, although the new Niche grinder aims to really address this.

Hello Grant

I see that you've been using a fair amount of Tank Coffee, which looks good - I'm getting going with an Aeropress and a hand grinder and am now keen to try some freshly roasted beans vs 'old' stuff from the supermarket.

Do you have any top recommendations to try? I normally drink my coffee black / Americano.

Thanks. Cheers. Bill

Over the holidays I have been considering upgrading the grinder to a Caedo E37s, as it has nice big burrs.

Thought you just bought a grinder Kevin?

CageyH
08-01-2018, 05:39
I had. It was a relatively cheap grinder with 64mm burrs. I am looking at going to 83mm burrs and a quieter grinder.

struth
08-01-2018, 08:01
ah, ok.. glad i hadn't imagined it. Its an all singing and dancing one i see with a price to match:)

CageyH
08-01-2018, 09:19
It won’t be cheap, but you only live once.
I am torn between two at the moment.
A 75mm burr Nouva Simonelli Mythos basic as this has really small retention.
A 83mm burr Ceado E37s.

The Mythos will be second hand, so not too expensive (comparatively speaking) and the Ceado is expensive at roughly €1400.

Failing that, I am going to forget the whole thing and make do with what I have.

CageyH
08-01-2018, 10:27
Looks like a Mythos is favourite.
Anybody want to buy a Mazzer Mini Electronic Model A that has done less than 500 shots?

User211

This drink is mandatory. Was drinking these in Tenerife over Christmas and the shot (see what I did there?) below was from a cocktail bar at the hotel.

Espresso Martini. Combine 50ml Kahlua, 50ml Vodka, a 50ml espresso shot and about 10 small ice cubes with a hand blender until the ice disappears. Pour it into a Martini glass.

Genius drink. It tastes fantastic.

Considering Kahlua tastes like puke by itself how this manages to be so good amazes me.

Oh - float 3 coffee beans in the head. These should be eaten with the drink. So use good beans!

I'm guessing most contributors here don't frequent Costa etc. as they have superior facilities at home, as an occasional visitor myself I tip my hat to the baristas who work the morning shift, it must be a boring, relentless grind (no pun intended) for those 4 or 5 hours and I bet they don't get paid much either

For buying coffee beans I can recommend Coffee Bean Shop https://www.coffeebeanshop.co.uk/

The service is good and coffee very nice. It's mailed out on next day delivery and you pay a fixed rate regardless of volume, which I guess can be good or bad depending on how much you want.

I particularly like their Guatemala El Fogon

Decided to upgrade my coffee system (Gold Blend) and after reading a lot of good things about them bought one of these:
http://www.espressoperfecto.com/best-stovetop-espresso-maker/ (Choice #1)

Any thoughts about how best to use from the resident coffee Gurus?
Dont do espresso, but a couple of espresso shots with frothy milk from a good frother, my next buy, will be what Im looking at.

What am I looking at here, recommended ground coffee beans, grind my own as its more fun...answers on a postcard please.

Considered pulling the trigger on a spendy bean to cup machine, but will prefer a more hands on approach, any money saved will go to coffee!

Thanks.

is this the Cuisinox Roma? attractive pot. not used a stove pot for years but they do work. most milk frothers these days are heated whipped types. think justin has one. ive got a whisker although dont use it much. i heat milk in micro then whisk it, but prefer to steam it personally.

http://www.tankcoffee.com/shop/ ... they do nice beans and will grind it to your preferred method too..ie for you, stovetop. great value

Stovetop moka pots are a special thing. They make delicious coffee. We used one for years before going all-in for an ECM Giotto.

Some tips:
- don't use the finest espresso grind coffee, or else it will choke the screen and blow the pressure relief valve; these pots don't produce enough pressure to pass the fine grind; so use pre-ground coffee intended for moka pots (slightly coarser grind), or grind your own and experiment with fineness.
- don't pack down the grinds tightly in the coffee basket (see above); just tamp it lightly or tap the basket on the counter to settle, then level it; the grinds expand once the water hits it and you want to leave them a little elbow room in the basket.
- start with your stove burner on medium to med-high, leave the lid open so you can watch it, then as soon as the coffee starts flowing turn it down to med-low or less; try not to let it boil and spit, or you will overcook the coffee; tweak the heat get just enough to keep it flowing steadily without boiling it; the reward is a thicker, sweeter tasting brew.
- you can get a stovetop frother which works great (like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bialetti-200AGR392-Tuttocrema-Milk-Frother/dp/B0001IXA4Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1521118442&sr=1-1&keywords=stovetop+milk+frother); you heat the milk, then pump the plunger until it's frothed. If you buy one of these, make sure it has a thick bottom to avoid burning the milk. Bodum makes a microwaveable one which is a good option.

It will take some experimenting to get it all right, but it's worth it. You may never want to upgrade from here. Millions of Italians use moka pots as their daily brewers.

Enjoy!

Any time....:) Post back if you need more advice. I think we used moka pots for at least 20 years before getting a big machine. We still use them when travelling, actually -- Bialetti makes one with integral heating element that plugs into the wall... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bialetti-Elektrika-110-Volt-230-Volt-Electric/dp/B002EWANQS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521123742&sr=8-1&keywords=bialetti+electric+espresso+maker

Good call. Before getting our Giotto we went around the shops sampling test shots from a whole bunch of different super-auto machines. Most of them made coffee that tasted worse than what we made in our Moka pot. And the steaming facility was crap, bordering on useless. The only super-autos that we tried that tasted half-good were Jura, Gaggia, and maybe a higher end Saeco model. You're far better off using a moka pot and stovetop frother, unless you want to spend close to a thousand or more on a proper machine, because that's what you'd have to shell out to get something that makes good coffee, can actually steam milk properly, AND won't fall apart in six months.

Enjoy!

You need to store the beans correctly. Something like this is apparently good -
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coffee-Gator-Stainless-Steel-Container/dp/B0722CHDWJ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1524918561&sr=8-4&keywords=coffee%2Bstorage%2Bjar&th=1 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coffee-Gator-Stainless-Steel-Container/dp/B0722CHDWJ/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1524918561&sr=8-4&keywords=coffee%2Bstorage%2Bjar&th=1)

I have one of these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vacuum-Coffee-Saver-incl-Pump/dp/B000XTFQZM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524918656&sr=8-1&keywords=vacuvin+coffee but you need to use the pump every few days as the beans give off CO2

I wonder about bean freshness sometimes.

I have had freshly roasted beans I do not like, and have left them in a open topped coffee tin out of disrespect for their flavour numerous times, sometimes for a few months. Then I try them and they seemed to have completely changed, transformed even, for the better.

Complex things coffee beans.

Can help some beans. Many can lose their fresh citrus flavour. Think it depends on roasting.
You can reseal bags and keep the valve working or use inert gas into a sealed jar.. being heavier it pushes the air out and its mostly the reaction to air that causes the problem

I literally thought the fruity flavour in Climpson's I tried was so pronounced it was artificially enhanced somehow maybe by adding various fruit juices etc.

I like Has Bean's level of roasting. About medium.

Just the art of the roaster with the right beans etc. Incredibly complex chemistry if that's the right term

For me, that's your best one. I like it when you get a deep orangey-brown colour at the sides of the cup, which indicates richness and flavour (as opposed to the more peely-wally look, in that respect, of the others you've done), combined with a nice creamy looking white (swirly) froth in the middle:)

Another test for me of a good coffee, is when you drink it, how many 'rings' it leaves on the sides of the cup, which for me is another good indicator of richness and flavour.

Marco.

The little 'surface bubbles' for me are also important...

I was only poking some fun, Grant. Coffee most definitely is a drug, though. And alcohol is incredibly toxic when it really boils down to it. Nasty stuff, no question, not that I don't consume it. But IT IS awful stuff in large quantities. No wonder it kills so readily.
