So do you actually like this 100 year old coffee plant stuff or do newer plants fair better?
Bumpy styleee...

IVE ORDERED ANOTHER ONE FROM THEM.. SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF RARITIES.
Bolivian Archangel - NEW
Strength:
Flavour:
Rich & Fruity / Sweet
Finca El Arcangel is a 10 hectare farm owned by the Rodriquez family located in the Bolinda community, just outside of the town of Caranavi. Having been planted in 2015, Arcangel is a very new farm and these lots are some of the first they have ever produced. A rich, super sweet coffee, well balanced with complex flavours. The cup profile is Cherry, Peach Yoghurt and Vanilla. Medium-Dark Roasted,
Nice and new, but...
Finger the Archangel?
Marketing. Gotta a lot to learn.
Maybe one day.
God says watch it.
:);)
Oh yeah. New stuff.
Coffee two minutes after pour.
Dunno what that stuff in the fancy bag is, but will find out.

ive noticed some beans are a bitch to get right
ive noticed some beans are a bitch to get rightThat was very good it is just the cream of the Jersey milk skinning after a while with no attempt made to stir or improve its appearance.
Dat looks like man's milk to me - 'freshly churned gold top', too..........:eyebrows:
Marco.
Latest beans to hit chez moi
Expensive these. Got them for a treathttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190430/ed5900e14c3ba15645be7736dea77f64.jpg
Where are they from mate, Africa, South America?:)
When you try them, describe their flavour, especially in relation to acidity... You I'm a smooth bassa! I'm still diggin' that last Columbian stuff I got:)

Marco.
the stuff last week is from Sulawesi. Its low acid and very smooth. These ones, are obviously from Bolivia, hence the name ;)
will leave them a few days to gas off as they roast to order and deliver next day. They do lots of different stuff at various price levels. this new one was a bit pricey at £60 a kilo; I got half a kilo, but first ones were less than half that. Just fancied trying these as its a new farm and new plants and they have a good rep.
oh, Sulawesi is in Indonesia...
Lol - you can all something whatever you like, but it doesn't necessary mean that's where it comes from.... The steam from my pish reminds me of the inside of a Bolivian rain forest:eyebrows:
Anyway, looks interesting... I look forward to reading your tasting notes!

edit, nice tasting too
Bean porn + coffee.
The Bristol Formula 442 coffee above. Not great but fairly OK.

Actually it is better than I thought it was made as per above i.e. triple bottomless PF shot.
7.5/10. Maybe 8.
Not so good in the daily take to work thermos where milk percentage is higher.
https://bristol-twenty.co.uk/
Reasonably priced at £8.25 for 500g.
So many formulas...
This is the expensive one. Quite light, and not a load of crema but this is very pleasant. You can taste the quality
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190504/99adacdf71087cf39347482a4a48ed17.jpg
No likey the peely-wally:nono:
Light and not a lot of crema are fatal negatives for me, dude, as my preference is for the exact opposite. Still, if you like it, enjoy:)
Marco.
yeah, its still new so it might age well... tastes very nice tho, as a superior single farm should. Quite fruity yet fairly rich flavours too. Think it will come on song in a few days. think i could also drop the grind no too
researching getting my own roaster :eyebrows:
I await Marco's Glasga pun

ive had that before.. not bad for taylors.. you got a nice crema
Yeah I did think it was OK. I do think their coffee is generally good for commonly available stuff.
It's dark, I didn't stir it to show the darker than usual colour.

have you tried roasting beans to your own desired levels justin?
No Grant but the family bought my brother a coffee roaster a few years back. He's used it ever since.
The machine was £300. It now appears to be around £550 and it wasn't that long ago we bought him one

Marco.Jammy toast. Nice. I'm hopeless at making good toast
 SUGAR overload
Lol.... It's about the only significant sugar I have all day. There's none in the coffee, despite being such a big cup, holding 3/4 pint of whole milk! Sets you up for the day and stops any snacking until lunch time:)
The freshly-squeezed orange juice was fab!
Marco.
Jammy toast. Nice. I'm hopeless at making good toast
Lol - that surprises me, as you're very good at making most things. All you need is a decent toaster! We use one of these :https://www.dualit.com/products/original-toasters
Marco.
Dunno if it's just coz I made it or what. Mine never tastes great. That of yours looked much better.. Guess I just like service lol

Do you warm the toaster first before putting the bread in ? or do you do it under the grill
Do you warm the toaster first before putting the bread in ? or do you do it under the grillYeah I switch it one for an hr before toast. Lol
Might be as the smell pervades your nostrils and you lose your desire for it.
Dunno but I like others toast better

Lol - it's a true fact that stuff always tastes better when you don't have to make it yourself:)
The key thing too, is using decent bread, with a proper crust, which toasts well. We've been here before, but the sliced packaged bread sold in supermarkets is dross.
Marco.
It's nice getting food made for you.
Miss that a lot.
Defo... Although that breakfast was all made by moi. For me, it's not so much having food made for you, but having someone else to share it with.
Marco.
That too. Lost my zest for life tbh.
Everything is too so samey and not nice samey.
Ah well enough of that.
Coffee, one of life's few pleasures left to me.
Get those wheels out then and come down and visit me - and I (along with Del) will put the zest back in!
Got a spare room downstairs, right next to the loo.....and the whisky cabinet:eyebrows:

I'm sure it tasted fab mate, but you're taking your pics too close-up, which is causing them to be 'overexposed' and out of focus, and the lighting isn't right (as we discussed before) making your gorgeous coffee look artificial, like 'burnt orange'....
Just my POV though, but for me your pics were much better further back on the thread. So what's changed - are you rushing taking them now, taking them in the wrong light conditions, is it a different camera or what?:)
Marco.
Anyway, the perfect (for me) cappuccino, enjoyed at breakfast time this morning in al fresco:

Thats different Marco , Not seen coffee with fresh ground black pepper on it before :)
And was it?All coffees that are the same vary between batches I find. Or I vary. One of the two.
Answer is dunno yet. Will spin some up in a bit. But it needs a few days to be at its best.
Thats different Marco , Not seen coffee with fresh ground black pepper on it before :)
Don't be daft, it's baby sheep droppings!:D
Marco.
Grinder set too tight but this still displays Kenyan Peaberry traits I like. With the grind set right I am sure it'll be better. In fact I know it will.
It has an almost fizzy effect on your tongue. A bit like that flavour is trying to dig into it. Hard to describe and almost unique. In fact I have had no other coffee that does it so maybe it is unique:D
There's almost a taste of liquorice and then you decide it isn't a taste of liquorice. Aniseed? Nope, not that either.
It's a complex coffee. I like Wogan's pricing and think this one is very, very good value.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190525/322bcd0fc04b0f9bfbc7ffc4d5653416.jpg

Light is massive to most cameras. Still cheaper mobiles are starting to get OK but even my mid-priced OnePlus 6 isn't what I would call great. Better than the older OnePlus 3T I had, though, by miles. And miles.
The Huawei P30 camera is interesting. Going cheap to the nearest sucker (or maybe not who knows what will eventually happen) now. If you don't mind the Chinese evesdropping on you but hell the whole world is at it and we let them get away with it.
If Mr Orwell knew how easily and readily we give away information about ourselves he'd maybe leap out of his grave:);)
We seem to do it because we favour convenience over privacy. Something he probably didn't ever bank on.

Nice, Granty...As you say, a good base. Where are you ordering it from, mate - got a linky?:)
Experience so far tells me that the BEST results come from using judiciously successful mixtures of various types of beans, and which invariably means buying beans from multiple sources.
One bag of beans, from no matter where or how 'special' on its own doesn't produce as good results, as using a 'bog-standard' espresso blend of beans, mixed with something a little more 'exotic', which is exactly what you're doing now with great success!
Marco.
Got this via amazon from a seller called the sweet pot.
Will look for a li k when on pc mate. Gotta buy two big bags at time tho. I froze one bag.
I freeze coffee excess now and keep the stuff I'm using in bottom of fridge. Then top up my hopper every couple of days.
About 6 coffees in my mix.

Water has a lot to do with good coffee taste too. If your water coming into house is very hard it can give probs. Although magnesium is desirable apparently
Any hoo today's one looked better in flesh and tasted great https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190604/d2885b01653947cd69a702f8ef966ca9.jpg
Yup, agreed about water. When I'm 'serious' about making coffee, as in when guests come round for dinner, or when making it for someone I like:D I always use mineral water, which does make a notable difference.
Marco.
acqua panna from tuscany is supposedly the best

I get pure hydrogen and oxygen cylinders delivered. I combine it in a controlled, sterile environment to make water.
I sterilize my coffee machine and all accessories beforehand, naturally, in a huge, purpose built autoclave in that same purpose built, sterile room.
After all that faff, I usually kill the visitors on arrival just after they have had their coffee, on the basis that I won't have to do it again, at least for that particular set of visitors.;):eyebrows::stalks::eek:
Just get a magnesium Jug filter :eyebrows:

Yeah, I heard that, and also that you've had a few complaints about the 'skin' left from the 'full-cream milk' used....:D
Marco.
it makes sense to improve your water as coffee is mostly water anyway, plus magnesium aids better extraction.
Yeah, defo. Fortunately the water where I am (which comes from the Snowdonia hills) is as pure as tap water gets, so there are no real issues. However, using sparkling mineral water, with my Moka pot, defo improves the flavour and imparts a slight 'crema'.
The other thing I've found that seems to improve the coffee flavour slightly, is pre-warming the cup or mug you're going to use, by filling it with boiling water and allowing the water to sit inside for a few mins before using it, so that the hot coffee isn't going straight into a cold cup.
Regardless of anything else, if you can't taste the difference, it helps keep the coffee warmer for longer!
Oh, and one other thing, this morning I used some Graham's Gold Smooth Jersey milk (link below), to make my cappuccino, instead of the usual whole milk I get fresh from the dairy, and bloody hell does this stuff create a lovely thick, creamy milk froth!!
https://www.grahamsfamilydairy.com/our-products/gold-range/gold-smooth
It also makes cappuccinos taste utterly wonderful, if a little rich for drinking everyday. However, defo one for special occasions or when you want to impress visitors... I suspect that Justers will already know about this stuff, but Granty, if you haven't tried it, I urge you to give it a go, as with the style of coffee you make, it'll taste better than ever!:)
Marco.
Just get a magnesium Jug filter :eyebrows:
Thanks for reminding me... I've been wanting to try one for ages, so just ordered one of these in 'Tim Malloy Green':D :https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BWT-Water-Filter-Jug-2-7L-Green-with-1-x-Magnesium-Mg2-Longlife-120L-Cartridge/173880925918?epid=776166442&hash=item287c1c5ede:g:m0cAAOSwtc9b0KPB
Marco.
yup, bwt make them. the bilious green could have been better thought out tho:rolleyes:
Lol - that's what sold it to me! All it needed was '1888' written on the side!:eyebrows:
;)
Marco.
Try it by self or mixed with tap water if it's too much. Depends initially on what your water is hardness wise. Mine being Scottish is soft. A little too soft for perfect.
Will do. How long do the filters last?
Btw, have you tried that Jersey milk? It's stupendous!
Marco.
I'm lastose intolerant so use special stuff.
The cartridge gives 120litres
Ah, same as Del, then. Does it not affect the taste of your coffee? I'd have thought that full-fat normal milk would be best for creaminess and flavour?:)
Yeah, I noticed in the ad it said 120 litres... It also said that the filter lasts for 28 days. So my thinking though, is that who's going to go through 120 litres of water in 28 days (I only use 300ml a day to make my morning cappuccino), and if not, the filter will 'go off' before you've had a chance to use its capacity...:hmm:
If so, it's going to get quite costly replacing a £27 filter every month, which is the list price for replacements.... Or do you make up 120 litres of filtered water and keep it in containers in the fridge, and if so, won't it go stale after a while?
I only want the water I use for making coffee to be filtered, nothing else.
Marco.

Those are just some of the things I've been thinking about.
Marco.
i use full fat milk, but lactose free.. its very nice actually and steams well too. the filters are bought separately and plug in. you can buy them in 6 packs.. they are made on austria and germany.
Ah, about the milk, okies:)
Still not sure about the practicality of using a water filter, just for making one large cappuccino a day.... We'll see! So how much are the six packs of filters, and how long does each one last, before it 'goes off'?
Marco.
Can't remember cost but you can get them on amazon although I use their own site.
Says 4 weeks but you can stretch it a bit. I drink lots of water and the machine uses lots too. Saves on bottled water for me too
Magnesium cartridge is just over 4 quid

I think that's the main difference between us. I drink lots of water too, but the tap water here is so good, we just have that, and as I said, I only need 300ml of water to make the coffee for my morning cappuccino, as the rest is milk!:)
Marco.
Try it from fridge. It's even nicer than usual bottle water I think. Only way to find out is to try tho. Not for everyone obviously.

Marco.Defo warm the cup first. Massive.
Or the shot glass if that's what your using, as I do when making the morning's Avex (thermos) to drink in the car in the way to work.
However Graham's is a bit f"&_ed at the mo. It's summer and the amount of cream in it increases exponentially. You can kinda see why they want to homogenise milk but it DOES ruin it flavour wise.
Even the local milkman's milk is a bit too cream heavy at the moment.
My opening group, filter and steam head clean all go Into the cup which gets it nice n hot. It makes a big difference to temp of coffee at end
Few new updates from my side.
First off, is that I've started using a Hario Skerton hand grinder (ceramic burrs), and buying whole beans. Will never buy pre-ground again. Am currently using a V60 dripper for my hot cups (much better than the Aeropress), and have also started cold brewing with a 1L Hario Mizudashi. I use a fine grind for the V60, and a medium grind (80g of beans) for the cold brewer.

fresh ground beans make a huge difference. the aroma off them alone is worth the work.:)
I may well sell my hand grinder soon as with my various illnesses im not able to easily use it now. cost nearly £200 new these and are the dogs danglies, but you need strength in arms and soulders to turn the damn handle :eyebrows:
Yeah for sure it’s quite a workout hand grinding, especially on a fine grind!

Could you post a pic of it again mate, and a link to where they're for sale new? Churz:)
Marco.
Just got some more beans from my favourite roasters, Adams & Russell. Here are some of my favourites, am a fan of medium roasts.
El Salvador Finca La Portezuela - https://www.adamsandrussell.co.uk/products/coffee/finca-la-portezuela-227g/
Papua New Guinea Mountain Top - https://www.adamsandrussell.co.uk/wholesale/products/coffee/papua-new-guinea-mountain-top/
Cuba Serrano Superior - https://www.adamsandrussell.co.uk/products/coffee/serrano-1kg/
not tried them as of yet..
Cold brew. 80g of the El Salvador beans. Perfect for mornings when I can’t be arsed to make a coffee. Needs at least 12hrs in the fridge, up to 24hrs.

Early evening cup. Graham's Gold Top.

It was OK just a double shot. Triple is better in that sized cup.
Oddly that bottle of Graham's had way less cream than the summer usual, where its normally way creamier than it is during winter. And no, it wasn't the homogenised version.
My mag filter for the coffee machine.
Saves using the one in the machine and you get the heavy mag to help with coffee extraction.
Just filled machine up so it's filtering tomorrow s water. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190609/2814b22c4ecc5d01650133c5a7e086e6.jpg

Nice Justers.... Good milk that GGT, isn't it? For making that type of coffee, anyway:)
Awesome stuff, Granty... The 'raw' espresso looks magnificent. I'd just go a bit smaller on your pics, though. Maybe from fullsize to large? Hoever, you've got the colours spot on now:cool:
Marco.

Pretty awesome 'coffee station', mate... However, the main reason why you get such consistently good results, is because of the attention to detail you put into the preparation, and also the discerning nature of your palate, in terms of bean selection/mixture, etc...
Despite having access to the finest materials, many painters fail to make great artists ;)

Still trying to find a decent dark. They don't exist to my taste buds I think. This is pretty decent but not that dark a roast which is cheating.

I was in similar situ in finding a single origin or even a blend that ticked all my boxes. Hence why i blend my own. Using magnesium enriched filtered water was the biggest upgrade tho.

That's your best one so far dude, but still not quite up to Grant's standards;)
Why do your coffees always looks so 'orangey, and almost 'lava-like'? Is it a lighting thing, or setting on your camera? Granty made a few adjustments recently, in that respect, and his pics have been significantly better since. Maybe you could benefit similarly?:)

Marco.Reflection from kitchen spotlights. You can see the camera doing it as it gets close to the coffee.
They are still the best coffee photos on the thread, IMHO.
Before you comment, bro, I would go have a look at your food photos and compare to the quality of the pics I post.:D
Biggoted but true post LOL.
Lol - well, we'll have to agree to disagree, and I'm not trying to take good pics of food, simply provide an illustration of what I'm eating or drinking (quick snaps)... If you want to me *actually try* I will!:ner:

Yeah up your game:)
TBH you need a better camera. We all do. Without that we're all doomed. But even with the shite we are undoubtedly using, it is probably still possible to do better.
Your pics lack resolution and focus IMHO. Though the subject material is usually good to very good.
I shove the coffee under the spotlights deliberately BTW to get the best result. The cost is colouration in the colour:D And glare.
Ok, fair enough... However, remember I'm only using a cheap £90 Canon digital camera, which is now about 8 years old, so I'm not surprised there's a "lack of resolution and focus"!:D
Don't think it would hurt though, to try photographing your coffee under alternative light conditions, perhaps somewhere different from the norm, and then let us see the results?:)
Marco.
I just use my phone. Can't be bothered pulling the Canon out for one shot. Lazy I know but it's not a bad camera on phone and does 19m pixels. Downside is it needs good light to get best out of it

Grant - yeah plus the mobile has Tapatalk on it which makes it easy to post.
Marco - outside in natural light should produce something significantly better. The natural light in my kitchen isn't great. Not through a lack of windows - the house is far brighter than most and it has a lot of window to wall ratio. You'd need to see the plot to understand it.
As Grant says, there is a certain "can we be arsed" factor.

It's just toast, dude... Btw, for reference, the jams are all handmade, from Thursday Cottage. One is Strawberry with Champagne, and the other is Apricot. Out with of homemade, I've not tasted better jam! Juice was fresh peach, the Compal stuff from our local Portuguese deli, which is fab - like sucking the juice out of fresh peaches:)

Yet no measure taken to make it less orangey. Still under a spotlight as it's dark and gloomy here.
Interesting.
It is a new coffee, though.
No worries, anyway it looks good:)

Ok the first shot is OnePlus 6 camera software.
The second shot is Google Pixel camera software that has been ported to the OnePlus, widely touted to be seriously good software.
Google pic looks more colour accurate holding the phone right next to the coffee.
The difference is huge really. The Pixel shot shows the granite needs a clean. And it is a lot less orange.

more light in secondThe lighting was the same, though. Cup in same position and camera nearly the same.
I actually prefer the OnePlus 6 shot but it just isn't accurate.
Well by light I meant exposure. Probably the software.

The Pixel camera only has a 12MP sensor. The OnePlus has a 20MP. Consequently although ported I am not sure what resolution to Pixel software is shooting at. Will check the file sizes.

The bottom one is MUCH more preferable for me, and simply more appealing/real looking, which just makes me want to drink it:)
No idea how you can prefer the other one, sponsored by Jaffa!:D
Anyway, I knew there were differences/improvements to be had with some experimenting:)
Marco.
Surprise - the Pixel pic is 4.98 MB whereas the OnePlus shot is 3.67 MB.
Not sure what is going on there. Will double check settings in both apps.
mine is capturing around 4.2mb, and 19 mil pixels. 4000 by 3000 or so it says. If i take it outwith tapatalk i have to reduce its size as the site software and tapatalk get in a tizz... so i usually reduce by 50%, although it still looks ok

Marco.I am expecting you to up your game now. I hope you realise that.
Otherwise your photos are in for some critique.
That means better picture framing, and defo higher resolution and focus.
:);)
Haha, aye you've got two hopes: no hope and Bob Hope!:D

Marco.Repeat after me.
"My name is Marco and I am a total loser".
:D
:lolsign:
Repeat after me: 'My name is Justers, and the girth of my wide-angle lens vastly outweighs the size of my penis'
Anyway, remember that you're the one with the fancy camera, and I'm the one with the toy-town effort, which fell out of a Christmas cracker!
Marco.
Buy a better phone or camera, by selling your sub-optimal, inadequate body for not very much multiple times.
I will pay your STD bill. Honest;):)
You know it makes sense.

That's pure perfection, mate! I'd have gone a size or two smaller on the pic, though... Can we see it again, a little smaller?:)

The second one is perfect... Wouldn't you agree the coffee looks much better now, not so overexposed?:)
In terms of your coffee though, it really doesn't get any better than that. I also like the 'shadowing' effect... You could put that picture on the website of a specialist coffee shop, to advertise their business, no problem!
It's just something I've found with my limited experience/knowledge of photography, is that bigger isn't always necessarily better!;)

Haven't posted on this thread for a while. Sadly,as I've run out of ground coffee at work for my Aeropress, today's best effort is truly feeble, being the free Nescafe they provide for us. :(
The Minions mug is obviously a highlight, though.

just the sizes you get with a mobile are less adjustable. i put that through imageshack which helps a lot
Well, as they say a little bit of time and effort spent doing something pays dividends!;)

Just a little something I obtained on Record Store day... The postie delivered it when I was sitting there. Thought it would look quite cool on the wall of my listening room!
Marco.
P.S I like my daily Actimel, lol... Helps keep the doctor at bay!;)

Nothing wore than a dribbling spout, dude:eyebrows:
Granty, that coffee did look good. Just the right colour, with a nice white swirley....:)
Marco.
wand seal is gone. easy enough to replace usually. pennies hopefully for the washer. may even have got a bit of grit etc under the seal and its not now sitting flush. Lots of crap in our water supplies these days
Oddly it happened after I ran some descaling solution through it. Seems like it screwed the washer, which seems hard to believe.
a bit of scale maybe. washer is either cracked or just unseated; either way replacing is the answer. a bummer tho. maybe get a big magnesium filter jug and use that for water. it should stop need for descaling.
Water up here is pretty soft so no need to descale here, but i filter it anyway as the magnesium inproves the coffee by a huge margin
