Hey Grant
Nice but i much preferred the Leak 'Delta 75' Receiver Aesthetics with the round chrome Press buttons, & chrome flip levers..
Yeah the delta 75 was nice.. Had a switch like on the 2300 amp speaker matrix i think. Can only work with what i have though Andre
You've done a nice job on them. A very attractive pair.

Good bit of kit.
Ta Ali. Bookmarked for future.
Decided to outfit the mf x10v3 with the latest RockGrotto upgrade kit kindly delivered to me by Mike Brailsford at the old price.. Very helpful guy..cheers Mike.
Total cost of the kit which consists of 7 diodes and 18 capacitors(if memory serves) was £55 inc postage which i thought excellent value.

So opening up the buffer is a matter of removing 4 screws at front and a plug for the led, then the 4 at rear plus the one holding the rca block and sliding out from rear.

Once in removed the caps on order and replacing with upgraded ones. Simple enough and board is marked for orientation for the polar ones.
Then diodes and the 2 non polar at front beside diodes were done together for ease of access..

Plugged in and left to warm up for 10 mins, and now playing.

Keeping busy, i decided to kill or cure my denon dvd 2900 dvd cd sacd player. Its not been playing cds coming up with the deadly 00.00.00
So, ive had a laser sitting in my box for a long time and decided to fit it. Good players these and would be good to be up and running. They were about 1500$ new i believe.
So opened it up left drawer out and unplugged. You have to remove a number of screws on front crossbar so it will flip up to get the black plate off. Its held by 2 screws.
Pull the ribbin connector out, by way these are a bugger to refit lol..
Remove the steel plate at back holding the laser runners down and extricate the runners and laser unit. Watch out for the springs in the black bit of plastic at back.
Fit in reverse first desoldering the 2 shorts put on for static.
Wahlah a working machine again.

P.S You might want to clean off the 'blood splatters', though, underneath ;)
Cheers yes it is and yes it does sound good. Very good dac on it.
The splatters are there to scare off intruders
Pic of it running a sacd. Not got DVDs audio to try but it runs DVDs so looks to be a success

Pull the ribbon connector out, by way these are a bugger to refit lol..
With some of the ribbon connectors (socket) there is a tension bar across the top of the socket on one side.
This lifts up a fraction, usually about a mm, to open up the ribbon 'slot'.
I will see if I have one and post some pictures of open and shut.
Aye there is a bar Alan. It moves a fraction but very awkward as it is all at back. I inverted it and turned it around so it was at front for fitting.
The box is all put back together and remote tested and working.
Plus the cables for the leak system are made
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/a750db67f6e90fa84c0fe23ee38d63a6.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/c504587ee969e26cfc20e787996d3aa4.jpg
Trouble with this machine is that its silver and doesnt go with my gear  I know thats a bit anal. but bar my buffer everything is black. I have ordered another laser just in case(the last one in stock) and may well sell this lovely machine. As a transport or straight player it is very good, and up there with top gear, doing sacd, dvd A and dvd etc.
at least thats is my current thinking lolhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/3258c6930d51f808766d487e38f63a8f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/1d58af6436e17ee243d0d4a8d439fa92.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/7ea380dc5968c11d4344c5aeeca15181.jpg

Aye i forgot them. Not that im connecting it up at moment anyways... It wont fit in the rack at moment as well as the switchbox so might set it up in spare room. Will need to be another time though. Im buggered doing all that plus the fish pond...and still got to clear the stuff away:doh: cant move at moment :D still breathing though.. These new tablets are helping to stop me from stopping breathing during night. Getting much better sleep too
New tablets good... :)
and the new heat guns a stoater!
Nice surprise by the way come the next board meeting at mine, fancy coming?
(Hint, bring some vinyl...)
Hope to mate .. Missed the one at Tonys due to getting mixed up about dates... You know my memory is lousy at times. Brain is like Swiss cheese ...feet aint much. Better;)

Even without the back and filling it sounds nice and clear, even over PC speakers.
Sounding promising Grant.
Made up a basic back.. Will need work but it will suffice I think.. It is getting hit fairly hard with sound waves so will need strengthening at some point.
Need to consider how to do porting next... Its now got one side port although no depth so really just a hole. I have no idea whats gonna be best, and am struggling to think of a plan lol.

Looking great, Granty! You've certainly made good use of those cabs :respect:
I'll have a proper listen next time I'm up, but based on what I can hear in that short video [allowing as best as possible for the sonic limitations of the transfer format] they sound pretty decent and certainly worthy as back up for the Teles.
Respect for playing some decent (non-audiophile dross) music, which is a bit more demanding that the 'funeral music', as Macca calls it, most folk use when posting these videos! ;)
Enjoy......

Seriously though, no major bass overhang or treble sting, sound very balanced Grant.
Great smashing super, as Jim B used to say. :)
new ones up just now mate
Post Brexit, i thought i better get second speaker under way. Back was cut off using jigsaw and rest of cross members removed. Rubbed down a little for now.
Then 2 drivers put in(one needed a small repair to cable mount) not actually retested them yet but that will come with the wiring section.
Bass port has also been done.

Plenty filling etc.. Still to cut a rear section for back.
So wiring done and stuffed. Tested ok. Well better than that I think
Just got s back to make for now then in for some testing

I'll be interested to hear your opinion on they sound Grant. Once you have a pair fully up and running. They should be fun! :)

Its not gonna be TL Martin. Bass reflex..there is still a bit to construct and add to it. Bass is plenty adequate though to me or at least i think it will be.

Yes i was hoping to get it finished enough for testing today. Was ill last night and the morning.. Very dizzy etc so the cold ive still got may be causing it. I have dry eye syndrome now too to add to my ills and that causes more probs lol
Still, i might get at it in afternoon.. Had a very strong coffee and already feel like kicking some ass;)
Bit of wood for back is not a great looking thing but its temp anyways. The small reflex hole is in. Quick test then into house.

Now into house and roughly positioned.

Give them a go, then!

Good thing about big and thick boxes are if you get it near ok you get nice crisp raps n taps that sound authentic.
Yes these have that i think. Still got the mid range too. Bass is as I wanted I think .. IE. Not overpwering but there. Very good sense of space too. Just initial thoughts from 2 tracks.
If your not running for cover they must be okay :)
Are they just two full rangers connected in parallel ?

Connected in series Martin. Gives a nominal 5.6 ohms approx but in real time a bit more i think. Probably nearer 8 for a lot of freq. also improves wattage to a massive 16. with sensitivity of about 96/98 db that would be awful loud.. 2 *10" drivers each side.
Might yet pop a front port in too
I might add they are bloody heavy too. Not sure what to put on bottom. the current feet are pretty basic

Go for a couple of ABRs too Grant. You may as well cover all angles. :)
It'll take you a day or two to accustomise to what they can do I guess. You won't have any trouble driving them, that's for sure.

Yes likewise. They'd also fall apart after a couple of days. Even the blood wouldn't help.
Thanks but Duncan did most of the build.. I just took it apart and adjusted it. Did some finishing etc... Lots more to be done for final fitnfinish. Will likely veneer some of it, although not sure what yet. Have some nice birch that is extra wide and will do these, or i may use some cherry to the edges and stain main carcass. Going to make front covers for them too. Dont have these in stock so will have to wait a bit. Driver rings will need to be made too, but i have stuff that should do nicely...Still they are nice enough for moment and would cost a fortune from a manufacturer.. The 4 drivers from late 50,s or early 60,s are rare, mint and sound fab... I have a single spare too, plus a set of single drivers made up in boxes too that are my main listen. These just may beat them lol

If by that you mean the sound doesn't appear to come from the speakers (i.e. the speakers 'dissappear), then that is a good thing.
If you mean the sound is un-focussed and 'wanders around', that is not a good thing.
Mostly comes from whole wall, and sometimes from the whole room. Its a bit 3d, depending on the recording etc.

Its Yew... I found an unopened bottle of the stuff. Had forgot about it, and funnily I was considering Yew. Got loads so can give it a few coats(water based). Pop some sand sealer on top then if want to can laquer it, or varnish it, or wax it .lol

Think i will go with the Yew. Was considering oiling it but it may be a bad idea. Might cause debonding of the top veneer... Might try a couple of tests first on scrap. Might be better with shellac, or maybe a poly coat

Still to decide on finish but the test piece i did with oil although not dry yet looks good and no debonding so far. Or i can use shellac and wax paste. Dare say i could get some water based varnish, thin it a little and put it on with a pad but am reluctant...was never very good with varnish

Leave them like this for a while..look not too bad in full situ
water based polyurethane 'varnish' can be successfully applied with a toothbrush even.. if matte.. Not gloss.
The stuff shrinks down for up to a year... neatly self healing most all application missteps.
Bigger issue I would think is what ? will passably adhere to a previously oiled surface.
But then leaving well enough alone has merit too.
Grant,
Paste wax will bring those sonavaguns up to a subjective "commercial" level of finish.
Personally, I like 'em as they are but if you want that "nth" level of extra razmattaz then paste wax is your friend.
Used Black Bison on my Eddingdales, not let me down yet.
P.s. Systems looking ace, bravo Sir.

At moment they can take anything, as the dye was water based.

Just caught up with this again - you move too fast Grant! They look really good now. Can't believe it.
I'm thinking the 'surround sound' effect might be related to them being full range drivers - so the top end sweet spot will be very narrow and if you are anywhere else you will get a lot of reflected mid-band.
Or that could be complete bollocks ;)

 Is that a compliment or an insult ;) They are not narrow, although like all speakers they have better positions Martin. Doubt they'd have enough bass for your liking, but they sound ok to me. some music, they dont sound so good with but fortunately 95% of what I like is good. Probably is some reflections as there is a fair amount of hard surfaces. Some room treatment may help. Will look better with covers on, and I still have to work something a bit better for the backs, but there is no rush for either.

I think the 'diffuse' effect you seem to have been experiencing may stem from having two full range units vertically arranged, but your ears only being on axis with the top pair (presumably). I can't see that as necessarily being unpleasant though.

Its not far as the base veneered surface had a pink tone to it. Its actually Yew, or as Marco would wish, ewe its a little darker than i was hoping for but such is life when using stains... you really never know how a big piece is going to come out. I will live with it though.
The cloth is from the US. dunno if I will go for it or possible a heavy black. Other possibles are Tannoy styled Shetland one I like, which is on the Bay from UK

Left field suggestion about the speaker grilles, and something that struck me when I saw that photo...
Think Sonus Faber leather fronted speakers...the leather front looks great on the Flugelhorns too?
Black grained leather on the front panel would look mega with those speakers, and would let you finish off the edges of the drive unit cutouts too?
Black fronted speakers might blend in well with the rest of your black kit too?
Just a random £0.02 worth Grant. :)

They look the part now Grant. How's the top end, no need for a supertweeter?

Not for me Geoff.. I dont go all that high tbh but they dont sound or feel like they need it. Tried them on the single driver ones and they became a tad bright so did away. These having twin drivers are closer to bright anyways so think it would be wrong. Great believer in keeping it simple, and no electronics in the way seems to work for me. Course you need nice drivers, and think these are nicest. Sensitivity too is a big plus to full range, for me as you dont have to try and force anything. Dont think i will be selling them anyways
Some hi rez photos. Warts n all

Aye I know mate . I'll try and get over before the snow starts
Decided to put the van dame silver boutique cable I found into the system. Needed to switch a couple of cables around so they would all fit. Glad I did now and the pain is worth it. Sounding that bit better with the change.

Van-Damme-Silver-Series-Session-Grade-Instrument-Cable-Low-Cap-55 (i think)
Also as I was doing all this decided to try the pioneer receiver in place of my pro art It was very decent and sweet enough but not as good I know folk think these little monos are crap but they ain't so there lol

So all back to as was now bar cable change and a little tidy

Cables do make a difference lol
You should try your big Sony amp with them, Grant. I've got half a dozen power amps and prefer the most powerful one.even though the speakers are very sensitive.

Tbh they need so little that a 6watt amp couldnt go past 10 oclock martin... That little valve job of yours is all they need to go very loud.
Well, today ive knocked up a couple of frames for covers, seeing as the weather was good and i could safely drag all the gear out of shed.
Should suffice although id have preferred them longer. They are 60x32cm, but could have been doing with another couple of inches in length.. Alas the bit of wood i had wasnt big enough. Still they will do for now anyways. Still nervous when anyone comes in house

Cloth i am using.. Quite nice and thick too. Colour is Shetland and supplied by mainlytannoy
Oh..not sure about that cloth colour Grant...
Given the rest of your system I'd be going for black, a less pink colour to compliment the stain on the wood or even a cream to match your walls.
Sorry to be a bit http://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/10/285x214/42733_1.jpg but theres nothing else in your room that really compliments that colour...
Just my £0..02 worth, personal taste notwithstanding of course!

Looks OK to me. Should compliment the wood colour just fine.
Fancied something different, and it will look less when on tbh. Natural Scottish colours i do like.... But if its not gonna work a set of blacks can easily be made for Sunday best :D
No offence taken by way:)
The colour certainly suits Grant but you say its thick, isn't that likely to restrict treble that is already quite limited?
Back in the day I used an old t-shirt to re cover some grilles cheap and plain but I guess you could go crazy and use a couple of your Bay City Rollers ones.
Supposed to be 100% transparent Andrew. Ive steam ironed it under a cotton cloth to remove any big creases. Looks ok but only once on will i know. They light up a bit when under heavy lights like a flash but no so much in normal light. Im awaiting the fasteners so cant go ahead til they arrive really.

He's got them framed and up on the walls.....
The wife was a teeny roller. They had a house just up road from us actually.. Think she got nicked once when a group of them were trespassing looking for autographs lol.

Great job with those old cabs of mine.
I've just recovered the grills on my Tannoys, used the same eBay supplier.
Sounds better than the original material, does speaker cloth clog up over the years?

Good to hear Duncan... That was one of the colours i liked. I saw one from the states but with the £ taking a dive, it was a bit expensive.. Another time maybe. The speaks are sounding very good.
Finally got my knob from China. Took a while but it was free post any the 2 knobs were pretty cheap.
The variac Looks a fair bit better now

'Bull' and 'China shop' spring to mind. :lolsign:
Shame overload. I'm away to put my head in the blender
Pile of magnets arrived. Neo type and boy are they strong for their size
May use them for the grills although I also have proper ones on order. Originally wasn't sure these little magnets would be strong enough but they will be

Got mine covered too now Duncan. Think it does sound slightly different to without, although i could just be imagining it...for the better too i think. As for clogging up, i would think its bound to. Just look at all the dust and moisture etc in air thats bound to stick to material over the years

sorry about that. Cock-up on the privacy setting front
What are the white things under the racks? Looks like you cut the feet off of some snowmen. But that can't be right as they would have melted all over the carpet by now.

They are polystyrene corners lol.. to stop the robot hoover bashing against the shelves. Need to do something permanent re that lol

Put buffers on the hoover? :D
Yes the robot hoover. I forget that you are actually a character from The Jetsons.
Must work though as I had noticed how clean your carpets are in the recent photos.
I have a big cylinder hoover too, but I now dont have to do it all the time. the carpet shows off dust etc badly and I dont like that lol.
Geoff, thats cool idea... it has a buffer but I think I will add something to it making it both softer and slightly taller

Taller? When you've got it looking like a young Brigit Bardot PM me.
lol... it can get under the setee I sit on as its on risers so I can sit on it. it gets stuck under there. Will add a bit to fix it, but will have to be careful of the magic eye

cheers Gary. Thought I'd try and do one as they sounded decent and I'd learned a bit about doing it. ot easy for us auld yins this utube;)

Just a quick update re these. Ive had a few sessions with them now; short but sweet, and believe the covers are fairly transparent, and dont take much if anything from the presentation imv. I think my room in its current shape, is a little lively for these, but nothing I cant accept, and maybe with some diffusing behind and out wide I think will be superb. They are pretty good at moment tbh, and with a fairly low priced amp at that, which shows that if you get the speakers etc(cables too) right, then the jobs likely to be a good un.
I will now retire from the speaker making business a happy fella :)
You can't retire yet - what about matching twin subwoofers and a set of super-tweeters?
If you didn't insist on living out in the wilds of jockland I would be straight round to have a listen to them.

I'm just about to use it before going up to ma cot Grant , I'll let you know how I get on with it and thanks BTW :)
Your system was looking and sounding rather good mate . I really liked how the speakers were sounding . You've done a fantastic job with them and the photos just don't do them justice .

I'd wondered about that too, thought maybe there was some acoustic foo going on.
How about a partially inflated inner tube on the hoover Grant?
Its an idea... I tried some poly but it interfered with the magic eye alas.

Ah, that looks better. Are the two speakers firing forward and parallel to one another, or is there a small amount of 'toe-in'?
No toe in. I tried that but there was too much of everything.. In fact a bit of toe out is fine but currently square on Barry

?
Must be the way the reflections worked I guess.. They are great square on. All my others liked a bit of toe in. These having 2 drivers each maybe can be vibrant if not careful
