Decided to outfit the mf x10v3 with the latest RockGrotto upgrade kit kindly delivered to me by Mike Brailsford at the old price.. Very helpful guy..cheers Mike.
Total cost of the kit which consists of 7 diodes and 18 capacitors(if memory serves) was £55 inc postage which i thought excellent value.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160528/ceba7ceea5691a6f3617f92c3576bcc5.jpg

So opening up the buffer is a matter of removing 4 screws at front and a plug for the led, then the 4 at rear plus the one holding the rca block and sliding out from rear.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160528/e96cd98005cbbc7116cda72b748ca3af.jpg

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160528/984cb3e99be8a4588423899849daa819.jpg

Once in removed the caps on order and replacing with upgraded ones. Simple enough and board is marked for orientation for the polar ones.

Then diodes and the 2 non polar at front beside diodes were done together for ease of access..

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160528/6625f8bbdbe85106f2cda092d6477a78.jpg

While at it i removed the poor feet that had been fitted after market and fitted some decent ones

Plugged in and left to warm up for 10 mins, and now playing.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160528/522ab9be52825c00a79125fef91da7d8.jpg

Have to say although it will take time for the components to burn in...lol.. It already sounds much better.

Keeping busy, i decided to kill or cure my denon dvd 2900 dvd cd sacd player. Its not been playing cds coming up with the deadly 00.00.00

So, ive had a laser sitting in my box for a long time and decided to fit it. Good players these and would be good to be up and running. They were about 1500$ new i believe.

So opened it up left drawer out and unplugged. You have to remove a number of screws on front crossbar so it will flip up to get the black plate off. Its held by 2 screws.

Pull the ribbin connector out, by way these are a bugger to refit lol..

Remove the steel plate at back holding the laser runners down and extricate the runners and laser unit. Watch out for the springs in the black bit of plastic at back.

Fit in reverse first desoldering the 2 shorts put on for static.
Wahlah a working machine again.

Pull the ribbon connector out, by way these are a bugger to refit lol..

With some of the ribbon connectors (socket) there is a tension bar across the top of the socket on one side.
This lifts up a fraction, usually about a mm, to open up the ribbon 'slot'.

I will see if I have one and post some pictures of open and shut.

struth
29-05-2016, 14:57
Aye there is a bar Alan. It moves a fraction but very awkward as it is all at back. I inverted it and turned it around so it was at front for fitting.

The box is all put back together and remote tested and working.
Plus the cables for the leak system are made

Trouble with this machine is that its silver and doesnt go with my gear  I know thats a bit anal. but bar my buffer everything is black. I have ordered another laser just in case(the last one in stock) and may well sell this lovely machine. As a transport or straight player it is very good, and up there with top gear, doing sacd, dvd A and dvd etc.

at least thats is my current thinking lolhttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/3258c6930d51f808766d487e38f63a8f.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/1d58af6436e17ee243d0d4a8d439fa92.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160529/7ea380dc5968c11d4344c5aeeca15181.jpg

Made up a basic back.. Will need work but it will suffice I think.. It is getting hit fairly hard with sound waves so will need strengthening at some point.
Need to consider how to do porting next... Its now got one side port although no depth so really just a hole. I have no idea whats gonna be best, and am struggling to think of a plan lol.

Looking great, Granty! You've certainly made good use of those cabs :respect:

I'll have a proper listen next time I'm up, but based on what I can hear in that short video [allowing as best as possible for the sonic limitations of the transfer format] they sound pretty decent and certainly worthy as back up for the Teles.

Respect for playing some decent (non-audiophile dross) music, which is a bit more demanding that the 'funeral music', as Macca calls it, most folk use when posting these videos! ;)

Enjoy......

Post Brexit, i thought i better get second speaker under way. Back was cut off using jigsaw and rest of cross members removed. Rubbed down a little for now.

Then 2 drivers put in(one needed a small repair to cable mount) not actually retested them yet but that will come with the wiring section.

Bass port has also been done.

Look ok for now.. Ive got some birch veneer for fronts and tops.
Plenty filling etc.. Still to cut a rear section for back.

So wiring done and stuffed. Tested ok. Well better than that I think

Just got s back to make for now then in for some testing

Its not gonna be TL Martin. Bass reflex..there is still a bit to construct and add to it. Bass is plenty adequate though to me or at least i think it will be.

Yes i was hoping to get it finished enough for testing today. Was ill last night and the morning.. Very dizzy etc so the cold ive still got may be causing it. I have dry eye syndrome now too to add to my ills and that causes more probs lol
Still, i might get at it in afternoon.. Had a very strong coffee and already feel like kicking some ass;)

Good thing about big and thick boxes are if you get it near ok you get nice crisp raps n taps that sound authentic.

Yes these have that i think. Still got the mid range too. Bass is as I wanted I think .. IE. Not overpwering but there. Very good sense of space too. Just initial thoughts from 2 tracks.

Are they just two full rangers connected in parallel ?

Connected in series Martin. Gives a nominal 5.6 ohms approx but in real time a bit more i think. Probably nearer 8 for a lot of freq. also improves wattage to a massive 16. with sensitivity of about 96/98 db that would be awful loud.. 2 *10" drivers each side.
Might yet pop a front port in too

I might add they are bloody heavy too. Not sure what to put on bottom. the current feet are pretty basic

Go for a couple of ABRs too Grant. You may as well cover all angles. :)

Thanks but Duncan did most of the build.. I just took it apart and adjusted it. Did some finishing etc... Lots more to be done for final fitnfinish. Will likely veneer some of it, although not sure what yet. Have some nice birch that is extra wide and will do these, or i may use some cherry to the edges and stain main carcass. Going to make front covers for them too. Dont have these in stock so will have to wait a bit. Driver rings will need to be made too, but i have stuff that should do nicely...Still they are nice enough for moment and would cost a fortune from a manufacturer.. The 4 drivers from late 50,s or early 60,s are rare, mint and sound fab... I have a single spare too, plus a set of single drivers made up in boxes too that are my main listen. These just may beat them lol

If by that you mean the sound doesn't appear to come from the speakers (i.e. the speakers 'dissappear), then that is a good thing.

If you mean the sound is un-focussed and 'wanders around', that is not a good thing.

water based polyurethane 'varnish' can be successfully applied with a toothbrush even.. if matte.. Not gloss.
The stuff shrinks down for up to a year... neatly self healing most all application missteps.
Bigger issue I would think is what ? will passably adhere to a previously oiled surface.
But then leaving well enough alone has merit too.

Gazjam
08-07-2016, 18:33
Grant,
Paste wax will bring those sonavaguns up to a subjective "commercial" level of finish.
Personally, I like 'em as they are but if you want that "nth" level of extra razmattaz then paste wax is your friend.

Used Black Bison on my Eddingdales, not let me down yet.

Just caught up with this again - you move too fast Grant! They look really good now. Can't believe it.

I'm thinking the 'surround sound' effect might be related to them being full range drivers - so the top end sweet spot will be very narrow and if you are anywhere else you will get a lot of reflected mid-band.

Or that could be complete bollocks ;)

Doubt they'd have enough bass for your liking, but they sound ok to me. some music, they dont sound so good with but fortunately 95% of what I like is good. Probably is some reflections as there is a fair amount of hard surfaces. Some room treatment may help. Will look better with covers on, and I still have to work something a bit better for the backs, but there is no rush for either.

I think the 'diffuse' effect you seem to have been experiencing may stem from having two full range units vertically arranged, but your ears only being on axis with the top pair (presumably). I can't see that as necessarily being unpleasant though.

Could be Geoff, could be. Not normally unpleasant just on occasion surprises. I am reasonably pleased with them as is, but need time to decide if its novelty factor.

Its not far as the base veneered surface had a pink tone to it. Its actually Yew, or as Marco would wish, ewe its a little darker than i was hoping for but such is life when using stains... you really never know how a big piece is going to come out. I will live with it though.
The cloth is from the US. dunno if I will go for it or possible a heavy black. Other possibles are Tannoy styled Shetland one I like, which is on the Bay from UK

Built from scratch, sounding great and looking REALLY good with the darker finish.
Seems to bring out the grain of the wood more...Looks great in your room.
Best Ive seen in all of your posts here.
Scary...Theres a risk you may ACTUALLY be finished? :eyebrows:

Left field suggestion about the speaker grilles, and something that struck me when I saw that photo...

Think Sonus Faber leather fronted speakers...the leather front looks great on the Flugelhorns too?
Black grained leather on the front panel would look mega with those speakers, and would let you finish off the edges of the drive unit cutouts too?
Black fronted speakers might blend in well with the rest of your black kit too?

Just a random £0.02 worth Grant. :)

Not for me Geoff.. I dont go all that high tbh but they dont sound or feel like they need it. Tried them on the single driver ones and they became a tad bright so did away. These having twin drivers are closer to bright anyways so think it would be wrong. Great believer in keeping it simple, and no electronics in the way seems to work for me. Course you need nice drivers, and think these are nicest. Sensitivity too is a big plus to full range, for me as you dont have to try and force anything. Dont think i will be selling them anyways

Well, today ive knocked up a couple of frames for covers, seeing as the weather was good and i could safely drag all the gear out of shed.

Just a quick update re these. Ive had a few sessions with them now; short but sweet, and believe the covers are fairly transparent, and dont take much if anything from the presentation imv. I think my room in its current shape, is a little lively for these, but nothing I cant accept, and maybe with some diffusing behind and out wide I think will be superb. They are pretty good at moment tbh, and with a fairly low priced amp at that, which shows that if you get the speakers etc(cables too) right, then the jobs likely to be a good un.
I will now retire from the speaker making business a happy fella :)

You can't retire yet - what about matching twin subwoofers and a set of super-tweeters?

If you didn't insist on living out in the wilds of jockland I would be straight round to have a listen to them.

Indeed, it was nice seeing you again. Hope the lenco disc helps with your speed issues.

I'm just about to use it before going up to ma cot Grant , I'll let you know how I get on with it and thanks BTW :)

Your system was looking and sounding rather good mate . I really liked how the speakers were sounding . You've done a fantastic job with them and the photos just don't do them justice .

They are polystyrene corners lol.. to stop the robot hoover bashing against the shelves. Need to do something permanent re that lol

I'd wondered about that too, thought maybe there was some acoustic foo going on.
How about a partially inflated inner tube on the hoover Grant?

Its an idea... I tried some poly but it interfered with the magic eye alas.

Ah, that looks better. Are the two speakers firing forward and parallel to one another, or is there a small amount of 'toe-in'?

No toe in. I tried that but there was too much of everything.. In fact a bit of toe out is fine but currently square on Barry

Must be the way the reflections worked I guess.. They are great square on. All my others liked a bit of toe in. These having 2 drivers each maybe can be vibrant if not careful
