After soome listening this box of doodaas has improved not only timing but soundstage coming from the pc files. I might go for a buffer as well just to see if i can sweeten it an ounce more....hey you never know till you try :eyebrows:

system is punching way above its weight now across the board:dance::baa::barrel:

Not tried V3. I've got a couple of the first ones. They work very well.

I had one of the little X-Pre's years ago. For the money (£200) it was a nice sounding unit. Not the last word in impact, but sweet.

At great physical expense I bring you my imf s on stands in main system.
Want to see how they perform as the clear out continues.

struth
16-04-2015, 09:38
early days but impressed.. nicer than expected. not as much bass as the kefs but probably a wider soundstage. at least i know they can perform.
They are rather sophisticated actually. really nice with soft jazzy styles. the stands are a bit low but i know know they are worthy contenders. didnt sound good with the t amp.

Thanks Andrew; they are not bad as back ups, and cabs are in super condition too. Just prefer my Kefs though, and as the kefs are taller and narrower, look better and are the right height for the stands.

Yes, it has with me too. The async is not bad jitter wise but every little helps. I'd say it increases to output a tad too; although that may just be the lack of jitter clearing up the mids.

Well, for now, unless a lovely , and better power amp or set of speakers to beat my kefs come along this is me I think. It is sounding fabulous and looks not too bad either. In the 18 months since I started this blog, I have pretty much changed everything, some more than once (hey, you know how it is) but I feel I have improved everything and tbh the overall cost, TT aside didnt do me too much damage apart from selling all the stuff I didnt need.

As soon as you hear those, you'll realise that they don't need a super tweeter. I've not measured it, but the top end on that driver seems very extended when listening to it. It's also one of the cleanest I've heard from a Tannoy.

Not had much chance to listen but the soundstage is huge and clarity is exceptional. (I think) ;)

Lol. Just trying to squeeze out more performance as I know its there. it was good b4, but I believe its better by a length or so now. They seem to be pretty solidly built and i believe you can load the bases with sand bags, there is a flap underneath to slip them in, or so I was informed. It is supposed to improve bass response

These sounds like keepers Grant, well done on your find,
must admit, when i dropped the arm off i had to take a double take on your power amp, never came across that make before.

Don't know if you are looking for a replacement, if you are, check out the Pulse Audio SRA-160 USB i've been having a play with the last two weeks,
did away with my MC2 Audio MC750 as i hurt my knee moving the flicking thing (22kg) dressing cables, getting old you see, :(
anyway, this thing is pretty good and sounds real powerful, built in tuner and USB and headphone jack and only weigh 7kg,
remote control too, really flexible bit of kit for the throwaway once it breaks price of £88.00 from Farnells,
only one draw back is the slight background noise, audible when near the speakers when changing lp/cd,
not volume dependent so it's there but not heard once music starts, there again my speakers are 95db sensitivity or so.

I will run them for a while then put the kefs back and see if i feel any love for the latter. I suspect the kefs may beguile me again...dunno what they have but i do like the noise they make.
really need to try another good power amp first for comparison. the Atoll 80 is very good and well regarded in France. looked at pulse Andy..they do a 120 watt power amp cheaply enough

Good idea, play it for a wee while and backtrack to see if it's a real improvement or just a rash fling.

Jeez !!!..you're quick of the mark, i didn't know they did a power amp version,i just want it simple now, looking at your rig with all those boxes,
while it sounds the biz but i just can't be bothered with all that pallaver again.

dunno why I bother either Andy....guess its the challenge of getting it right within a budget.
Been checking the cart measurments and have found it to have been out as I suspected. Have redone from scratch and it is sounding better. reset vtf too to 1.95 gm. sounding smoother. still a little noise on track one but it may just be there and these more efficient speakers are showing up the warts.
Also, removed the Eichman's from the speakers and feel bass is tighter without em.

You need valves or Class A solid state to suit the Tannoys best Grant. I've tried every other type with them and always end up going back. The only exception I can think of might be an upper range Creek amp, they have the clean, smoothness required.

Yep, that or a couple of monos maybe? Was looking at a couple of rotel powers that can be bridged into monos. would give plenty of power and headroom. dunno about smooth. Class AB might work too. Not convinced about the Atoll's ability to deliver the base freq that these speakers want.

That's what I was getting at basically Grant. The Rotels would be A/B and having used literally dozens of A/B amps through Tannoys, I've never found them quite the right thing to my ears.

I don't know the power output of your Atoll, but my little 25 watt Class A, Monarchy Audio SM-70 Pro power amp sounds just fine with various Tannoys. More than enough power, bags of grip and punch and sooo clean. Similar case with my Classic Tubes EL34 monoblocks and these only have 15 watts per amp. More than enough.

walpurgis
21-04-2015, 17:41
That's true. There seems less in the way of decent amps about lately.

My SS Class A power amps are used in a rack below other gear without problems. I just allow a few inches of 'breathing space' above them and don't put stuff directly on top of them. They do get pretty warm, but you'd not burn yourself on them. Unlike the valves.

After a few days of dual concentric sounds, I am back to Kef black magic :eyebrows: ...Its a different presentation altogether, but,...you know I think I strangely enough prefer it. Odd I know, but the Kefs are so sweet sounding.

problems, problems! ...ah well, new power amp arriving tomorrow hopefully so will give it a try with both, and possibly also with the clone pre over the weekend . Kefs are 90db so should work ok as they are 8 ohm, and although the tannoys are 91db, are 6 ohm. If nothing else it will be fun and interesting; that is if I can get the pain away. Done too much today again.

Will Do Geoff. It will be interesting. My system may deserve to be moved to point down the room rather than across as it may be a tad lacking in depth for the bigger speakers. Something I have been toying with for some time, but it would mean a lot of work and may not achieve the results. Room is a fair bit longer than in breadth

Firing down the room with a bit of space behind the speakers and a bit behind the listening position. Especially with a big speaker. You get that depth of soundstage that some people attribute to the amplifier.... Firing across the width is for the birds ;)

Those Tannoys will need current, not watts I reckon.

Slight overall background hum when nothing is playing but about normal for a valve power and nothing more than others I've used.

I'm sure you know this, but If you've got a bit of low level hum Grant, make sure all signal leads are as far away from the power amp and mains leads as possible and of course use screened leads. Are you using the Nakamichi pre-amp with it? If so it may help to move it further away as it's directly above the power amp mains transformer.

I'm waiting to hear what you make of it once the Tannoys are hooked up. I reckon the whole thing will come to life (not that it hasn't anyway :)).

I recall reading that the 637s benefit from being a few inches off the deck by the way.

Thanks geoff. yep there will be some changes afoot once i can assemble the troops:eyebrows:

...think i will move everything and rewire etc. if you have any of that interconnect cable left i will get you to make me a longish one. 5 foot or so as think i will move the wad over to where the cd player is and visavee ..the optic cable from cd to dip is long enough to handle it. benn rubbing a little high grade oil into the brushed ali facia as there was an annoying rub mark in middle. a very light oil often clears it
sounds very controlled with some difficult Simon stuff as well while keeping guitar and vocals true. obviously imaging and soundstage is reduced with the kefs but i was getting reverb with the tannoys causing ornaments to vibrate ever so slightly as they are in line of fire at moment. they wont be once room fettled. Might add some sound absorbers if needed in any dodgy places. got some lines on stuff.

Any idea of the values of those caps.?

Firebottle
24-04-2015, 18:50
The orange drops usually have the value marked with three numbers.
The last number is a 'multiplier' that gives the decade or x10, x100, x1000 etc.

For example if the cap is marked 104 that means 10(0000) which is the value in picofarad. It is a little confusing if you are not familiar with it. 100000 pF is 100 nano Farad or 0.1 micro Farad.
104 is 100 nano Farad
224 is 220 nano Farad
474 is 470 nano Farad
105 is 1 micro Farad

Hope this helps, Alan

Needing to do likewise with the firebottle as well to change the valves and see it it is that, that's making the noise. was doing it in idle out of the right channel only today. nothing much but you get a little putt every few seconds. The KEL84 is normally a very quiet amp, may be worth checking any smps that are close by, it may be picking that hum up from them, I had a similar issue years back, unplugged the wall wart powering another item and the hum stopped, just a thought.

I'm tempted to start my own walpurgis system thread you know Grant. Trouble is if anybody saw my 'den' at the moment, they'd fall about laughing, 'cos I've got way too much clutter. So much in fact, that I can't reach the Hi-Fi on the other side of the room currently.

Looking good Grant. A couple of bricks side by side under each may do as good a job as crates although not providing the height.
The Tannoy will definitely benefit from the proposed axis shift in your room. I'd say a good two feet away from walls.

I would agree Andrew. 2 foot per side if possible would be great... not sure my wall is long enough :eyebrows: might be if I move the gear over to the window wall though. Problem there is a radiator.

After getting some roughness in the bass on my vinyl set up that ive not heard before (today only)and a number of times over the last few weeks(alan of firebottle sent me 2 valves to do this) i have open the phono up and changed 2 of the 3 valves. didnt have a replacement for the 3rd one which looks like an ecf80.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/27/6fcfcd3e3f1234366a9a307e2ef63056.jpg

So reconnected hood of for now and so far the light farting noise for a better description seems to have gone ...

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/27/dd1b55e35e18d42269837af44adb455a.jpg

Also tried a different cart. A mm one and roughness is still there on the recording of Louis and Ella.
So this must be the wad power amp revealing a poor mastering of the recording that my S's power amp didn't. Got diana krall on and it's clear although not as deep a recording.
Need to get the hood on agin as it's picking up some strays.
Cart back to mc reset etc sounding lovely.
Think the 2 valves were not at their best as it sounds to have better articulation now

Grant,

After being through some listening tests with Alan, it's well worth changing the caps in the phono for something better, like the Zn's..

Grant, your system is looking great. I bet it sounding much improved as well. Look forward to hearing your impression of how it sounds firing down the length of the room. Let the guys help move it though! Shame I'm 5000 miles away...I would happily chip in and help if I was nearby.

Grant,
Brian's off on holibags for a week, when he's back him and I will pop over and do the shifting if you want to switch things around.

Reckon firing down the long length of the room will suit the Tannoys better.
Another thought might be to put the system on the opposite wall, no doors n such, so can spread the speakers out a bit further?

*edit*
Can't remember if you have a gas fire on that wall though!

aye fire and a huge chimney breast.. no rush on this Gary. its sounding very good for me now that they are off the ground as i dont like lots of bass frequency hitting me now. going to put some deadning foam between the 2 sheets of glass on each stand. that will improve things again I reckon. felt a single sheet might be chancing things a bit as they are fairly heavy.

ok, ive been trying out the monoblocks that i got for a project now deceased[emoji38] I used my tannoy e11 speakers connected via Van Damme UP LCOFC. 6mm full defination cable.
First i tried a single proart in stereo mode. powered up and a few adjustments to the tone controls and i was getting a reasonable sound out of it tbh. Fan is a little noisy when close and no music playing.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/29/326195e26d85493c247eafda0c386a44.jpg

Heartened by this I did the 2 of them in mono mode. ea h has a button to set this on back. Interconnect from cd player straight into the amps both using the red socket. Same with speakers ..both speaker cables using the 2 red sockets allowing the opposite phase to produce double output.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/29/d950c81a354e4e6d4931fbfb6f8d7fa2.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/29/4e968210e3b22d11e4d2622a359fbe4a.jpg

Boy it sounds rather good. lots of definition and bass and goes fairly loud before distortion happens in the small shed.could feel bass waves through the floor actually:eyebrows:

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/29/227e5c42328dc84d29817fbf19a9c65e.jpg

Fan noise is alas doubled and would be a problem for some. I dare say a quieter fan system could be obtained and may look into this. surly these have to be a bit of a bargain though for the outlay. I reckon the cases would probably cost what i paid if bought seperately.

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/29/7b7507bf9e0fbd6a3a1cd7528b1729f5.jpg

Not opened one yet but assuming they are class d chip amps. will be interesting to try with a preamp. if successful it would allow for each block to be placed behind a speaker thus negating much of the fan noise...an extra bit of fun to look forward to:eyebrows:
All in i am quite impressed with them. musical definately...queen and lynyard skynyard both sounded excellent through the tannoys.

struth
30-04-2015, 16:14
Not bad Geoff.... I have added a couple of lengths of acoustic foam down the sides of the racks closest to the speakers to reduce resonances further. it seems to have had an effect too. also 2 pieces between the speakers and the stands, and they have had a big effect. they just lie in the gap between the speaker and glass stand as they are on very small feet. Opera have screwed with the browser again so have been migrating to Maxthon. I am nearly there now and have to say its the fastest I have ever used.

struth
30-04-2015, 16:26
I also need to move the valve power as the shelf above is too close and getting too hot for my liking I will swap it out with the cd player on the other, glass rack. its a bit taller slot and being glass wont burn. Just have to get a 2 m interconnect do suffice it properly, but in mean time I might just get away with a 1 m one. I will get on to it over weekend pain allowing..

walpurgis
30-04-2015, 16:39
Yeah. It's always best to give valve amps a bit of breathing space.

I tried Opera a couple of times and didn't get on with it. Maxthon is good, so is Avant. Both are I.E. derived I believe. I've been using Comodo Dragon for the last year or two. It's Chrome based and works nicely. Had no issues.

I keep a few sets of good RCA cable joiners handy for experimenting with longer cable runs, joining pairs as a temporary fix. It works OK.

struth

Yes the monos look quite good, and sound not bad either. gonna tinker about with them when opportunity arises. sure a quieter fan could be found, but if not there are other ways round it I guess. TBH they were pretty cheap so nothing much lost and I have heard worse costing a fair bit more; these are pretty flexible and might well improve with a pre on the end.

But as long as I can lift a glass of Scotland's finest to my lips, I'm smiling :)

I once played a gig that called for lots of headroom on the amps so I ran a dual mono system. Waiting for things to get going, and to warm the amps up i was playing some Linda Ronstadt & Nelson Riddle. I came into the hall, walking toward the stage, and was gobsmacked at the naturalness, detail and musical presence of this disco rig... It was good kit playing, but still - i almost burst into Audiophilanese . Id be keen to exhibit at Scalford using all pro audio kit for a laugh...

Well all the test voltages check out. Had it hooked up to some cheap speakers for the test, so played some music from my phone into the amp. Sounded fine with no distortion on the right channel.

Will sort the RCA socket, fit the Mundorfs and run over the solder joints with my iron, then put it in the system for a couple of hours and see what's what.

Did the distortion only come in after a while Grant?

Possible culprit, someone fitted this cap and didn't trim the leads -

sorry ali was at shop. it just appeared from nowhere matte and stayed. that long leg looks like it may have been shorting against something right enough...not sure how that was missed by the fitter.is it on the right channel?

No it's the cap on the heater supply to the ECF80's.

Anyhow, have now fitted the caps, will let it run for a bit and see what happens.

it happened straight after i moved it from one rack to the other. initially i just tested to make sure both channels were working but switched off. then later i intended to have a listen and they started that way. so maybe the movement etc caused one of thise legs to touch something. it was fairly noticable when you got up to reasonabke listening levels Ali.

How was hum when you first got it?

There was a bit, yes. not overpowering but there. I put it down to being close to the pre and phono stage. but if your getting it then perhaps not.

Had this before with power amp n my active system, so may be ok.

It wasn't overpowering, just a bit. you couldn't hear it once music was playing. It seems to be quite sensitive. will maybe change that bridge rect at some stage too.
I was listening to the pro monos to same music that was on yesterday through the Kefs and that bass boom was pretty much gone, so the DC's may not like that amp. never heard it as bad as that tbh..still its all about the learning curve

Thanks for casting your eye over the WAD mate

So whats the final prognosis then? Think it was the cap legs?

Its the only thing he has found so far Barry. the distortion never happend with him but f the wire moved a fraction then it wouldnt I suppose. All I can do is run it and see. Got the other wee jobs done though so thats a bonus.

Got the Wad back from Ali this evening. It was very good of him to take a look at it, and also fit the caps I had to upgrade. Not had a chance to fit it in yet but when listening with the monos today using my flac system I have to say they sounded really fine with the Kefs.
So many options these days still it does add some spice to life :eyebrows:

Thanks again Ali T

..Just got it up and running(had to wait for the drugs to work :eyebrows:) no distortion now so reckon that cap was culprit. only some soaktesting will answer that for sure though. The hum Ali was on about was andcstill is there. not dramatic and maybe an earth strap would work betweem pre and power.
Nice amp with a clean and revealing sound. surprisingly powerful for 16 watts. Still like my ProArts though so they aint going anywhere at moment.
will pop a pic in shortly

Aye no worries, it'll prove the amp is the source of the hum.
