Aye mate . Just this minute I'm making some stands to raise the 637s 22cm which will bring the tweeters ( not really sure what this driver is called . Dual concentric :scratch: ) up to ear height when I'm sitting down .

With the Dovedale cabs, Ive decided to try some multi finishes, as a trial(nothing ventured), so began with a first roeswood (water based dye) coat. this may end up terrible or nice, but I fancied a bit of licence.;)

Hope so Geoff. There was a few parts at top of one side that didnt take the stain correctly so i had to remove a section and then redo it and then recoat the whole panel. Looks better now ..... Tribulations of starting with water dyes.its a nice base colour though that rosewood from Bolgers. Leave it for a while now to make sure its bone dry b4 the next stage

I am going to use the 5 inch slot n tube first with the other hole blocked off. Will just vary how far in i put the tube to get some idea of length. At that diameter with this size of cab i doubt i can get it down more than 45hz.. That would maybe be 8 inch length.....maybe lol
If im not happy then a different port could be made i guess. Due to the cab set out the internal s tweeter is out probably for the good:eyebrows: My hearing doesnt need them anyways but might try my externals at some stage if the driver doesnt pass muster. Will need to make up a couple of blocking panels as ive removed the switch box on back. I have taked off the old speaker socket arrangement and have some white square box units that will fit in the round hole. Should have enough of my stash of white flat cable that is quite good speaker cable.
Also making up a twisted 4some 2m speaker cables to try out. They will likely be orrible but fancied trying

Well pleased with the Tannoys mate . Lifting them up 22cm so the tweetere are in line with me lugs when I'm seated , has made a big difference IMO.

I'd be too impatient and fit the drivers first and test them. If they were good, I'd probably never get round to the cosmetic stuff :lol:
Love the work you do, Grant. When you replace drivers, do you 'tune' them by ear, or have you any measuring kit you use?

Normally its a bit of guesswork Pete looking at similar jobs in similar sized cabs..not very scientific lol.. This one i have done a little checking and math through a site and as the cabs have a limited depth i can probably only get to 8 inch length max and hoping 7 will do. So ears will be used. Ive marked the tubes in inches to guage the effect. As ive said im no pro, just like playing

A trick I use to bring gouges up and out is to put hot damp cotton wool along them for a while. The moisture swells the compressed wood fibres and raises the surface. Often the mark will then sand right out.

Water can be useful, yes. Its good to raise the wood hairs for a final sand or sometimes to stain. Decided to try disguise this time with my graining pens and then sand very lightly till it blends.

Its in the cherry shell and set to 2gm. Very punchy dound from this. Surprisingly good for the money.

If that's the case, you're definitely not getting the best out of the MC25FL. The sound from these 'glows' with musicality in the same way the SPU does. Digital shouldn't come close.

The Pi is sounding bloody good tbh Geoff. not saying the TT doesn't as well, and I have a lot of nice records that don't cross the divide, but I guess the convenience of the Pi plus its superb sound has to be a factor I suppose. For the money it is a no brainer.

Yeah, there is no obvious reason for it, although stress can be a factor sometimes. It misses the occasional beat too.
I remember being in the hospital for tests when it kicked in and the nurse nearly shit a brick thinking I was about to have an attack.... lol . I had to calm HER down:doh: chest gets itchy too for some odd reason :eek:

Twisted and double insulated then overbraided Brian. Sound remarkably good on the upstairs Fane speakers. Must try them downstairs as well... It was 12mm braid and it was a good fit

added another coat of clear shellac, a little less dilute this time. its looking quite good and think if I still think so next time I look I will just finish it with a top coat of wax. I have been toying with popping some satin varnish on instead, but I dunno.....not keen on using the stuff if I can avoid it, but I could cut it a bit making it better to use.. Started to make up the cable now

Dunno yet Brian. Probably need to make new baffles at least, and maybe some internal changes. They are decent cabs build wise(heavy too) so I m hoping for a nice finishing product. they are light drivers but Ive heard some of the 8's before(well a very similar set)....Ive even got a nice set of Philips grille badges that should be just right.

No Geoff. Still to work out how to get it indoors. its heavy and I cant carry it with 1 arm. If its dry tomorrow I will try and rig up a trolley with padding etc... As I have monos I will start with just one and try tuning it with reference to the Telefunken on the other channel and by its self I think. Then will have to unbox the other one and fit driver etc and then do what I did to no 1 and then get it in.
Lifes a pain in the touche when your physically buggered, but there are often ways round things if you apply whats left of the mind :eyebrows: Looking forward, with a touch of trepidation to it;)

Yup Marco.. Elephant roll lol. They are mid driver tubes actually .5" got both now running and very pleased with them. Bass is just right for me.

As i say they are not quite as sensitive but have presence.

Lol. It aint sticking out now Alan. Was just trying various depths..took 3" off it...

Was concerned that the class d amps were not giving these the full welly so connected up the wad 84 ..I was right... Wow. Big improvement ...looks like these speaks like some valve power or some decent ss welly... Got the pre as low as i can and is quite loud.. The Pi puts out the full 2v and wad is sensitive. Just a very full soundstage. Better than the tannoys i think.

If you wanted to lower the sensitivity of your Wad it would only need the addition of a couple of resistors.

I know you have replaced one of the coupling caps so should be easy for you with some guidance, glad to help.

So with proper driving these celestions are fantastic ...very impressed. The class d monos dont quite cut it with these. They have the supposed wattage but no oomph. The wad has only 16watts but all the oomph you need. Its a quandry although a nice one.

Taking the opportunity to do a few things to the Telefunkens while they are out of the system.

Still to try vinyl....

Only got the tvc Geoff now. It was clicked at notch 1 and was loud enough. Ive taken them out for now. I know what they can do and what brings them alive. They are ok on the monos but a bit veiled..you know you can tell that it will explode into life given a better supply. And ive proved that. Stunning speakers played right. Reckon they are possibly the best ive heard that way ..quick too.

The tele's are back in as is the monos and with the adjustments and the new cable are sounding even better...

Seems very decent being driven by the wad. The wizzer cones do a good job. My hearing doesnt go super high these days but you can usualy feel it ifits not there even if you dont hear it.
They are a tad big a!d powerful for my needs tbh so they wont get much use i fear. May sell them and recoup my outlay later on. Not that many folk these days rate fullrange speakers which is a shame as well done they have a lot going for them. Wouldnt be a problem if more was needed as a supertweeter could always be added..

Got the itch quicker than expected and dug out one of the Rogers cabs.
Decent strength in these although not the easiest to work on I think.

Cut out the old tweeter to accommodate a five inch wizzer driver. The eight inch driver fits in the main hole.

If you wanted to lower the sensitivity of your Wad it would only need the addition of a couple of resistors.

I know you have replaced one of the coupling caps so should be easy for you with some guidance, glad to help.

OK Grant, I'd forgotten that the WAD used the feedback resistor R32/33 to generate the bias for the input pentode.

It's still very easy though, increase the value of the 22R resistor R8/9 to 47R or even 68R.
The input sensitivity will then be 855mV for 47R, or 1.14V for 68R.

That looks like a major redesign Duncan including the valve. Might just be too complex for this old yin. What benefits did it bring?

The E88CC is an excellent valve with low distortion and good linearity which is required for the phase splitter.

Input sensitivity is lowered to around 1.5mv for full output.

I did some swapping out of values re resistors to alter input sensitivity to the wad amp re Alan (firebottle)'s recommendations .... initially I had the telefunkens in place and tried the 47 ohms which was not super sucessful so went up to 68 ohm and that was much better. switched one speaker as thats all I could manage to the new celestion monsters. 68 is too much for them:doh: ...so I reckon that 68 is pretty good for the tele's that are super sensitive(over 100) and maybe, although not tried with, 47 with the big celestions. These speakers are really good but need driven, to levels that are probably too loud for my current situation to get them singing which they really do. so I think I will leave for now the 68's in place. might be interesting to set up a switch with differing values that you could dial in as necessary, as it really does make a difference with these sensitive speakers..... there again I would likely find it easier to just sell it

Thats the kind of amp to run these big drivers.. Glad I got it right. Not ideal with the Teles though and the proArts are spot on with them as is the wad with the fettled resistors. Teles are so efficient in action (over100db) that they need delicate but firm handling....lol.. Just thought of an analogy but best not to go there:eyebrows:

More listening done today and it was all positive I think. The combo perhaps doesnt do jazz as nicely as the Tele's with the Pro amps or the Wad, but what it does, it really does lol.

More sure than I was now that the WAD and the Promitheus could go along with most of my speakers . It is quite amazing how good full range speakers can be.
I was listening to Queen today and its possibly the best Ive heard them, for long and weary

Ive been playing about with repositioning my mag lav feet on the tt as i wasnt getting even pressure and felt it was affecting the sound a little. After some experiments i think ive come up with a better configuration. Alas it does make it slightly less stable potentially but hope it will be ok...really could have done with a 5th lol will try and post a pic

They are normally specified by the inner pin diameter plus the outer sleeve diameter of the plug.

Usual sizes are 2.1 and 2.5 mm for the pin for 'standard' sizes. Try comparing to a known size drill bit perhaps.

Those would be inner pin diameters, outer dia is often in the 4 - 5.5mm range. Maplin sell a wide variety of plugs if you need to change a cable to fit. I'd measure using a digital caliper, but as Alan says suitable drill bits could be used.

Best i can come up with is 3.5mm outer and about 1.5mm inner. Probably best to order psu with 5.5 to 2.1mm and get some adaptors it is centre positive fortunately. My calipers are old mechanical and came up with3.2mm outer. But they dont seem to di that size so guess its 3.5... Inner for that size seems to be 1.5 .....dont know why these are not standardised.lol

After returning wad to stock input of 380mv a couple of days ago i decided to try it upstairs on the Fane fullrange speakers I made a while back.
Have to say that it sounded extremely good..a match made in heaven lol.was not expecting that. I like the fanes but they jumped a level with this kit....pics to follow

Well with the phono stage sold and its replacement not due to be used till xmas i have fished out that little bear head amp again and wired it to the mm stage of the sony. Working quite well. Slight bit of induced hum especially on the right but not too bad. Siting is important. This should see me by ok....its quite good actually. Soundstage is a bit narrower and output a tad lower and seems to show up a little more noise on the vinyl if thats possible

Just ss I was about to write it off the double linear psu appears. After allowing it to acclimatise to the temp I have tried via an adaptor the 5v line to a phone. It charges so appears to be a worker. Going to see how it does with the rpi

Satisfied even after a few tracks i know that this psu is a big upgrade on the smp that you normally use on the pi. Lower noise floor and smoother in a good way...Acker is soo dreamy on that clarinet at moment. Much more clarity in the background orchestrations too...

For the record just using bog standard leads for 5v and 240v rails and currently not reduced to 230v through the regenerator. Will need to try and rearra!ge things to accomodate this. But thats for another day. Tbh the whole McCoy needs re doing now...

I am impressed with the new psu. if it improves the phono as much as it has the Pi then I will be happy. I have finally traced the occasional distortion I get with the Rola speakers(at certain freq only). It is the whizzer cone vibrating and distorting the sound mostly on one side(right one). I will have to come up with a plan to perhaps damp the whizzer as just touching it makes a difference... perhaps a coating or mastic or pva..??? dunno

Try a light strip of blu-tak. Easy to do and totally reversible.

That's a sensible suggestion. A ring of fine acoustic foam popped over the tweeter cone and lightly sandwiched against the bass cone may help too. That's a dodge some manufacturers use.

PVA glue sets hard and will not damp, it'll just add mass.

Aleene's Original Tacky Glue is the stuff for speaker damping. It dries clear but tacky and retains a texture similar to the Plastiflex coating that used to be applied to KEF and B&W, etc., Bextrene speaker cones. Best used thinned with about 30% water and a couple of coats brushed on.

Naw.. Improved it a bit... Ive rotated the driver by a out 60 degrees and thats has made a difference too.. Might be a damaged coil. I cant see any damage to the suspension thats obvious.. Its not that bad and more noticable at low volumes i think..only a sort of barratone freq sets it to noticible .... Just annoying

Also decided to get my xmas pressie out and connected to the linear psu....for a check like lol... it is staying out.. might as well use it now... sounding mighty fine... it's an Emotiva xps1 .a very nicely made and sounding bit of kit.

This is to replace my tvc. I didnt really need the control for what its to be used for, just the extra sockets, so thought if I'm to get a switchbox then do it in some degree of style. this is a very nice one:) This will be my alternate system, with either these lovely Fane's or my stunning Telefunkens:eyebrows:

I noticed the Lenco had kinda stopped. Hope you get the bits soon.

Not yet. Might try some in back bottom near cage or in between the whizzer and main cone.. Not had much chance to listen since turning the driver. I will get some light stuff next time i'm in shop.

Ah... Well in a way yes then but still need a tt mate. These 12 inch discs wont go into the cd player.

Well spun it and picks up to speed in under 2 secs and freewheels down in 13 secs. Both speeds seem to be fine although not tested them for accuracy as of yet.

All looking good. Will leave off doing the arm for now. Might need a hand actually.. We shall see.
