Yeah, thats the one Roy. Been measuring and think i can use some of it for records too, so a saving on buying a kallax. This one cost me nowt so you were not far off with value lol
Think they were fairly expensive
I've got something that size, colour & shape, but with drawers in the living room. Damn handy for keeping the grand daughters bits in. :)
Think they could be used with drawers too. It will fit ok according to my measuring up. Got an idea to get the tt higher too although that my be pie in the sky
Wall shelf?
A lack table with legs reduced in size and fitted on top f unit. Might be ok.
A lack table with legs reduced in size and fitted on top f unit. Might be ok.
Ive had a few other ideas on this. Think they may turn out better, so am going to wait on my grey cells making a final decision. Got a couple of small things on order and have a few things here so might be able to produce a hybrid unit. May of course end up pretty hideous :D
anyway it will have to await myself feeling up to it:rolleyes:

Doh. They are remarkably strong and stable especially with the shortened legs. Got rubber inserts for feet coming. Just enough gap between legs for a full size thingie
Been adapting the big unit too. Had back panels off cut and replaced eventually as I fell into the damn thing and damaged the central verticals doh. After I recovered I fixed that best I could. Had more outer inserts and only 1 middle one so cut one down. Just awaiting a couple of things and ready to go.
Not sure I'm up to it though so might leave it til Ive got help. Pleased enough bar damage to it and me

Clever idea mate . I have an Ikea TV bench and that would sit perfectly on top . Two questions . Did you cut the legs ans aren't they hollow ?

Yes i cut them with circular saw then a quick sand. They are hollow but the feet slip in really tight. Its so strong i reckon i could stand on it. Put the screws into legs with a drill to get them right in straight n tight. ie fitted the double ended screw into chuck...

Not much further forward but actually am. Its a Belkin pur AV Filter and distro box. Ive cut out the back there so i can slot in all the plugs. Button for powering everything on is higher now with it being there. The black one is the regenerator.
Fitting the tv shelf at moment and removed the glass shelf thats been there since i wallpapered many years ago. Still in decent nick actually. Helps with no smokers now.

Cheers Robin. Sounds decent yes, although one mans decent will be anothers crap, or great I guess. Just getting to grip with the amp really as Ive not used it much and never in this setup. Its probably too powerful for these speakers but not as bad as the Sony was. Quite a nice amp as you'd expect from pioneer's near top of the tree.
Spun some Frankie this morning and have to say he was in good voice. I was a tad concerned that i was feeling a little vibration on the slate plinth which is new, since changing racks to table. I tried some sorbothane under the tt feet but its still there, so not coming from table. But, it seems to be sounding better for it, or in spite of it. Seems to go against general ideas but hey ho, i,m all for results.:)

Quite decent and big transformer
Definately got a fault lthough no idea what. It seems to be mostly under 100 hz..hit the 100hz cut button and it all but goes away... a sort of spitting noise. I cant find any info on it and there are a few small chips in it so assuming its probably one of those.
God knows what it would have cost to make but it must have been more than i paid new.tiawan or no tiawan. I guess its spares now.

In one of the earlier photos did I spot a Bren record weight (in gold finish) ?
I've been considering something like that for a while but never sure if they were adding any value or not. Has anyone experience either good or bad with them ?
I did have one, yes. It was nicely made andworked well on the td160. I'm using a Nagaoka one now which doubles as a stylus cleaner. They are not as heavy but are nice. some records and tables they sound worse on so its a matter of trying really
Looking good Grant. I'm glad to see the Pioneer having a turn in your main system.

Fished out the big Denon cdp and fitted it into main system. Thought the silver was more inkeeping, and it does sacd as well as pretty much anything else.

Hmm :hmm:
~ try swapping out the speakers for something else from your collection - I'm always suspicious of single driver full-range jobbies. Not that I've heard Telefunkens, but I've heard quite a few of the breed.
Blasphemy :D. My twin tellys aint going anywhere lol. Trouble is i only have fullrange speakers now. Well thats not quite true, i do have a nice pair of Kef Cara,s too. The telefunken alnico drivers are very good allrounders actually. Ive a set of singles too that are very nice too, but only 3ohm. These are 6 ohm due to series driving and a bit more gutsy.
Actually the pioneer amp has worked surprisingly well with them; better than i thought. Ive still to work out a way to get my top loading Tandberg cassette in to the mix without looking cluttered. Maybe a little shelf at back and stand it on end.
Tbh i use my headphone rig mostly these days as i dont have to move which is a bonus in my condition:D
jandl100
28-03-2017, 10:29
So - you go off your main rig when you use "full range" haha speakers. Take the hint! - put those cute little Celestions in and see if the system starts to boogie again! ;)
Lol. Only celestions ive got are big celelestions..they are full range too. Just like headphones now i think. Thats the trouble with cans jerry. You get used to them and speakers struggle to give you same impact. Problably a sound pressure thing
jandl100
28-03-2017, 10:44
Get one of your local mates to bring a proper () pair of speakers round.
Just to humour me, and so you can tell me I was wrong. :D
But yes, I do know what you mean about 'phones - you need some exceptional speakers to match a decent pair of cans in some ways.
Next time im fit i will pop the kefs in. They are nice. Not in your face . Oh i do have a small set of celestions.. forgot about them lol. Yes they are ok but not in same league as the telefunkens which you may change your mind on if you heard them
Fitted a pic behind to cover up all the old screw holes. Easier than redecorating

Chaos reigns as I change carts lol
Been so long. And Ive lost all my settings in the system change. We're written down. Anyway the much lower output AT95 shibata is on and playing at 2.0 gm currently. Sound is starting to sound good. I'm so used to the shure it's difficult to go back to the more refined shibata. Still done now and felt the shure deserved a rest. I don't have a replacement
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170403/30b38a9471898637493291434be93415.jpg
Yes its a very good cart now .. shibata tips really do shine up a cart. Think im a philistine but it turns it to more like a mc in style, and tbh i really love the in your face mm shure :D think at £145 plus imports its a bargain tbh considering what some cost.
I will give it a few days but think i might be returning to the shure eventually...

Amp is pretty good, with plenty power fo my needs. It needed a fair bit of attention initially but always wanted one. it has a phono stage but never tried it tbh. Yes the Telefunken are of my own design. Twin drivers per side. dont need a lot of amplification but like to be controlled at same time.
Definitely looking sharp! Very nice rig you've got there!
The under 100 rumble could be Air born. Try pulling your speakers out a foot or two, and see if it doesn't change?

Yup, i hear ya. At moment there isnt room alas to move them further. Think the structure of the Ikea stuff perhaps doesnt help, being partially hollow.

I realize you may not have the space to operate the speakers standing in the middle of the room, I was speaking mainly just as a test. If it proved the cause, they'd still have to go back. I wouldn't blame the IKEA stuff off hand, if it's air born vibrations, it would make little difference what the turntable was setting on. It's just the close proximity.

About 400 pf per foot according to my calcs.
Are the multiple strands individually insulated? And if so, are those of the two conductors interwoven or braided?
Only 4 runs. They are insulated yes. More twist ed than anything ... very similar to the ones im using, its 16 awg
Does each conductor consist of four individually insulated strands, which are twisted up with the four strands of the partnering conductor?
400pF per foot (= 1.3nF/metre) does seem rather high. (For example, QED 79 strand speaker cable has a quoted capacitance of 58pF/metre.)
No they are separate conductors. Totaly separate. I need to see what equiv reading i get with ones im using that are doubles using 12awg., which overall has a bigger x section.

I think that the idea that as a species we are externally focussed, embracing all that life has to offer in an expansive way is illusory.
We all live I think in little worlds; think of Mrs. May, her world is surely in one of preoccupation with masses of data on economics and public opinion, and I bet she is frenetically pawing over it all every night.
Consider the devotion to cause of Arnie, training 3 times a day, eating six measured meals a day, and devoting himself to the one big challenge in his life, winning.
So I look at myself with my pursuit, as one lady described me 40 years ago, 'Playing with all my bits of wire', and think
'Is this an expanded emancipated life?'
I think it is in the human condition to deal with life in confined ways, focussing on specific things only; you can bet that mountain climbers and skydivers do.
Quite, I think.
Just old and Ill really

The box is records. Ive quite a few but been being hard and got it down to 3 boxes like that plus my Sinatra collection in main unit. Like a bit of decor, and make no appology lol . Im not ocd but i kinda like a bit of neatness. The speakers are not superbly finished but pass muster i guess. Twin fullrange drivers and sound excellent. The ones at back are my single (same driver) versions which are really nice too and only need a trickle really.
I think it looks great, proper man cave 😉 😎
Yes it looks most appealing. There is more to a listening room than just a stereo, it looks like a place one would want to go listen to music!

Looks the biz mate.
So, after buying some planar cans and they are now ensconced in my headrig over with pc, such is their greatness lol, ive put the AT dynamics over in the analogue section.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170513/ce94467c49a463bce2bc06ee9c93424f.jpg
Jerry,(jandel) offered me a loan of his dac/pre/headphone amp and i gratefully accepted.
It arrived promptly today and i eagerly opened it. Initially tried it with my pc rig on usb via jriver and spotify to the oppos... there was a distinct lowering of sound quality in comparison to the smsl m6 i use.switched to the dynamic driver AT phones and it was indeed very good.
So, now to where i intended to use it; in main system. On coax and optical( think i marginally prefer optical) the sound from the cd player is very nice on both headphones yay! Plenty power on tap for my cans. Impressed with it. Think i will get one [emoji3]

got Nina on cd and its very nice indeed. both sets of phones work well out of the optical. no so impressed with the usb though so far. still i dont intend using usb with it. might just be a bad mix with the planar cans. lost the soundstage

I agree the USB is sonically the weakest of the inputs - I used a Halide Bridge USB->RCA converter with it to excellent effect. Sounds fab that way.

maybe a bit rich those.. last one i saw was dearer than the whole unit by a margin. TBh I quite like the 2 other connections, and the usb was quite good with the A Technica cans. Not tried running the main system through it as an analogue signal as of yet. Seems to have choice of ss or valve so thats very flexible

Ah right - I was going to ask about that!
Yes, those Halide Bridge widgets usually sell for around £170 used, so substantially more than one of those DACs new. :D
I'd rate the Xiang Sheng as better than a £grands worth of DAC sonically, so in that context the Halide Bridge is sensible value!

I like its flexability Jerry. can take several inputs so now I have tried it and if I still continue to like it I will get one. they seem to have come down in price a little as I see there is a new one out. Think this model will do me for my needs though. Suits my other gear physically too. The usb on the smsl is very good if your ever looking for one although forgot youve got a fancy French one now.

Yep, Grant has the one with the fancy Cirrus chip in, I think that is the latest one. I might be wrong, though! There are quite a few variants of the Xiang Sheng DAC around - I think grant's is the latest -01A.
There is another, but its not quite the same. (03) yes this is the current model. Believe it will get superceded though soon.. Will do me I think nicely. interesting to hear what its like with analogue too. Get round to that soon. got carried away with headphone listening today

well some alterations to wiring etc and some setting changes and i have usb from a different pc into main system via this dac, and sounding quite good too.
Also switched the chromecast to optical here and into the dac for radio and spotify. this is working well too.

Ah.
It's so new I hadn't gotten around to trying adjusting headphone volume.
Probably an internal switch / jumper to do that?
No instruction leaflet with it but probably info on t'Net.
Lol.. they said the vc was just for headphones. I did read somewhere that you could specify it to work with the normal output cable too. Interesting development if you didnt ask for it. Well ive not tried an analogue source yet but its connected on digital ones.:)

Thanks.. ive had a shot of it in main system. Vol on the unit full open and on valve out. Cd was also going through my buffer.. sounded very nice with wide sstage. Impressed overall by it, and has to be a bargain. Cheers jerry for loan

well, Ive tried a number of positions and prefer full out and use the vc's on my amps Jerry. much better resolution and soundstage for me. and set it about half way for headphones. Prefer the ss version I think although the valve is ok and interesting too. not done enough testing to come to a conclusion there.

I probably didn't even try any but the 12 o'clock position on the new one as that was defo preferred on my older version that Martin tried.
Quite looking forward to getting "your" one back now and having a try with it at full whack! :D

.. I was getting vibration on cd player and had put a slate between cd and speaker to deflect it which it did a bit but then later wondered if it was getting affected and thus the tt too from the front so stuck a slate in front and boy it sounded better. Granite is a great material for table tops and under turntables. I just had a piece 180cm x 64cm x 2cm fitted - the downside was it took 3 guys to bring it and put it into place. So my HiFi's staying put - forever!

There are quite a few variants of the dac around, I've only heard an old and new 1A. Both are excellent but the newer one (as in the link above) is even more transparent and detailed. It's a great Dac, imo.

its a pre amp/ dac and also a headphone amp. This one seems to me to be better volume wise than the loan one for some reason or Ive just go lucky with a position. Got it set at about 10 oclock and its working fine for both headphones and system. Still using the ss output rather than the valve one for now. Controls didnt have markings on though so I marked them myself with a blue paintpen. Quite pleased with it... nice of our Jerry to have loaned me his. Tremendous value.

I can have an all in system with it. Vinyl goes through it as does tape plus dig sources, all to my amp but can also get analogue and digital outputs for headphones without altering anything. even the chromecast goes through it:eyebrows:

A little bass shy as you'd expect Geoff. only 4" drivers so a sub will assist that. but clarity is superb and they are quick too. surprised how good the aptx 4.1 Bluetooth is. bordering on redbook

It's about scale and dynamics and imaging as well as bass.
Another really good pairing is LS3/5a with a decent small sub. Whoa! indeed. :)
Plenty power from its amp and control too Could also use it with main speakers as it has high speakers in. I take it you would just attach them over the speaker ones
playing the Africa soundtrack, it was extremely good though the Chinese dac/amp and into the small speakers with the Sub in. you would have thought the big speakers were playing, such was the scale.:)

So set up was painless in this case as it prett much fitted same criteria as my wooden head and shure cart so minimal adjustments.
Set the tracking to just below max at 1.85gm.
Yes a mk1 goes that high.

Started with billy holliday, and even though its old recordings, it came through very clearly.
Followed by duke ellington and a 200gm (yup, getting confidence) and sounded again very good. Very assured tracking too.

cheers Oli.. Sounding ok again, as are the little ones which I can run from same dac/pre without changing anything. can actually play both at same time as it has 2 outputs simultaneously

That little DAC is on my "try" list. There's a 2nd hand one on eBay but it's too near the price for a new one. I'll pick one up at some point.
One the Alphason is in and tried, and I've picked a winner, I'll be focusing on the Digital side.
Good thread Grant.

What sub would you suggest to go with the LS3/5a - I use a pair of the new Falcons on my desk and would like to try a sub with them.

I believe the Avant Garde Basshorn can be obtained for around £20,000. :D

I had a BK200 sub, it kept the lovely mids of the LS3/5a but added a sense of scale and dynamics to the presentation that was quite startling.
Oh, and deeper bass, too!

What? - photos can be loaded directly on to AOS?
How does that work? - got a linky?
Method to upload photos to site...
Click on your username at top. On next page down left hand side there is a section called albums. Click on more, then on create album. Give it a title and description, leave it public and save.
Then click upload pictures, the add files. Add files which should show in a row below. Once you have the ones you want in that row, click done at bottom right. Then save changes button.
Now when you click on that pic, you willl receive a bb code at bottom.. post that directly into your post( no brackets are needed at they have been added).
Done...
