Over a hundred records done now.. Only just getting to the basis of this ripping business. They get better every time I Learn little bits from trials. It's true my earlier ones arent quite as good but still decent
Some of the new ones are better than the record, if that's possible.
It's a very clever program, but although it's info help is great to tell u how to do things it donsnt tell u what to do, why and where etc. Its like an apprenticeship.
Still it's good fun. One thing I will say if your doing it, get a powerful pc and as quiet a cart as you can. Use clean records etc.
Good to know you’ve worked out the kinks Grant,
Be starting ripping my own records in the new year, might pester you for some tips!

Not wishing to troll your blog, Grant. Does that Quad Vena have enough muscle for those large towers?
S.
They work great with flea powered amps.
The Quad would have no problem.
Vena is just used as a pre currently although as Chris says, the edies don't need a lot
My ripping of my fav records is about done now. Quite pleased with most.
Records can go upstairs in storage, and replay equipment can either be sold or stored too.
My Roon trial is about finished too. Enjoyed it, and will consider if its viable to buy or if I stick with the 2 I have.. Jriver is now just released ver 26 which I had prebought. Not that there seems much difference for me in the audio side.
Audirvana updated to ver 3 recently although I don't see much change in it either tbh, although it starts better.
Year comes to an end as dies my vinyl listening of over 50 years

Enjoy the rest-just you and a remote control now!
Enjoy the rest-just you and a remote control now!
Sadly.
End of an Era...
Only thing that’s absolutely certain is that things will change, and you’ve more than got the digital covered mate.
If it’s about the music...your fav LPs are still playable, in digital format.
If you miss having a turntable, you don’t need to, have it on your rack looking cool!

The turntable will look as cool as the Sputnik weather station... :)
One of these sputniks on the bay for £100. no idea if it will sell. I think its retro cool. I thought it 60's but apparently 50's.
also think many of the lp rips are better than the cd versions. No idea why that is...maybe mastering
Lots of beautiful and good sounding vintage components you have got Sir! We love Vintage! Aren't we? :christmas:
The turntable will look as cool as the Sputnik weather station... :)Decided to move all the tt gear on mate. Going to be more tidy, and would be a shame for such great gear not to be used I think.

How you getting on with it Grant?
How you getting on with it Grant?
Hi Gary, its behaving now with malware bytes off. Not sure why its started causing an issue, or if the issue has anything to do with roon but it looks like an update on mwb has decided certain things roon does it doesnt like(a driver issue or maybe it thinks its malware) but why its bluescreening the pc and causing a reset doesnt really tally...
Anyway its not done since so I will look at mwb and see if I can get them to co exist again
In Malware Bytes,
Can you add "exceptions" (i.e. allowed apps) to its program list?
From what you say its definitely a conflict of some kind.
Unfamiliar with MB, but have used similar programs that let you add these exceptions - basically it sees it as a designated "good" piece of software, and leaves it alone.
Worth a look?

yup, it does somewhere lol.. been a while but will give it a go next week.. its played all day, and half of yesterday ok..
Reckon that would let them play nice together...
I cant actually find where roon is located as a folder... they seem to have hidden it.
Can you search for the *.exe file rather than the folder?
Folder would be where you originally installed it..C:\Program Files (if a y4 bit window s install?)

I reported it to roon, but they just say.. It's not roon. Typically I suppose.

update.. ive disabled web protection in mwb and it is holding up. So something in that and what roon is using kernel wise i think..one causing the other to go too high in memory maybe..
anyway ive reported this to mwb.. they had issues with this and video games a year or so ago but was supposed to be fixed... maybe the roon high graphics?
Mwb say they are aware of it and working to fix... Ive done a log report etc via their tool, so should here back soon. I switched the web part on and its been ok today so far so maybe their tool did something... time will tell
They have now found the issue and are writing a fix which should get applied.
Dunno how long tho. Cut out today so the Web protection is off again

It's now working fine(so far).
The nice chap at roon have given me another month to play with.
Very good of them.
That update seems to have fixed it.
I've been using jriver again to see if I miss roon..
Also although taken 4 days bit by bit I've tidied up the cd rack as there were about twice the amount there should be piled on it. Added a thick glass shelf on top too and popped a few bottles up there as decoration lol

That's the dream eh? Open and enjoy yourself!
the mortlach, nikki and bladnoch ive never tried before. the others, yes but in different years obviously. whisky as you know is usually like wine and variable with vintage:)
by that i mean the smaller batches ... the big turnover ones are more likely to be very similar, and blended stuff pretty much bang the same
Decided to try for a years membership of Roon. I quite like it, even if I actually think jriver is better in cans.
It's a better experience especially when your a bit immobile. Just sorting out how to pay. As I don't do credit cards..
Like to thank roon again for the extra trials. Top marks
Good stuff Grant, glad you like it.
The experience of enjoying your music, especially with Tidal and Qobuz integrated, is the best I’ve seen by far.
Sound quality is moot, but I think because of the need to use a “core” computer running the software, your privvy to computer gremlins somewhat...which may explain peoples different ideas of sound quality.
Stay away from windows, stick to a stripped back version of Linux and you won’t go far wrong imo.
Quality of Roon endpoint matters too.
Softwares awesome.

Never heard of those Grant, look decently made and if they sound like the electrostatics I've tried they should be very good.
They look good Grant, and from your first impression sound good as well . Not cheap, but it's good to see a new audio manufacturer that is British.
I've not been following your thread Grant, but do remember you were using some headphones that could have their response tailored to suit the wearer. Have you abandoned these?

They de sound great, but I've hopes for this set too. I've got oppo planar too, so these hybrids fill a gap until I can pick up maybe a set of full electrostatics. Not many around tho are a reasonable price.
Also got a new set of the adjustable nura brand ones. Light on ear discs. The should hopefully come in about 2 weeks or so.. Been waiting a year lol.
Another light set of Bluetooth maybe as well. Have my eyes on a few in ear with sound isolation etc
Oooh... new stuff! :D
They look great Grant, hopefully get the sound quality AND the wearability in the one set.
Will probably take some time for them to run in?

anything out of red circle is out of normal. 360o for freq... i was normally out on a couple of places but am wildly out most way round and further out too.. thats the hearing of a 90 yr old:doh:
i was wondering why i was not getting same sound as before. I can only hope its temp... certainly yeaterday i was very lightheaded and a little unsteady.. maybe an inner ear issue

Good advice there. Even if you hearing has deteriorated (and it will do, to greater or lesser extent, for everyone over the age of 50), that is not necessarily a reason to stop you enjoying music.
if it doesnt improve i will, when its safe to do so.

It can affect the ear vessels and nerves with different mechanisms. Ear dysfunctions following cervical spine injuries can be manifested as hearing loss, vertigo, or tinnitus.

Got a few shows on hdd and got them to be scanned.
Downloaded app for system pc and can play from there onto main TV. Works a treat so far and cost me nowt.. [emoji23]

That saves me a lot of issues and cash
Overall the free version seems to do all I need. Works fairly well too. Have quite a library built up now too from old dvds.
Grant,
How do the DVD’s come out quality wise after being ripped?
You ripping to MKV format?

yup its way better, especially when your not very mobile.. got quite a few of my titles on now..
So, after a year of waiting my nura loops have arrived.
Set up in under 5 mins. Had to put the 2nd largest tips on to get the optimum seal.
Being used to the large nuras it's easier to get them set up. And know what to do etc.
Sound is excellent for such a small, and light device. My neck is going to appreciate the lack of weight.
Obviously they don't quite reach their big brothers level but they are fairly close and best of type I've tried.

they are very decent for tinies Brian. adapt to your hearing etc.. answer calls on your phone too. you can flip off the adapted noise isolation with a touch to speak to folk etc too. the mics amplify the sound
Have to say these Nuraloops are excellent with a good recording. Very surprising how good a sound you can get from something so small.

You need to turn it up quite a bit to get a level of sound from it, which is a surprise, considering the speakers are efficient.
Looks good on the slate.
If its a Windows driver, maybe take a look in the driver settings (if any) for anything obvious?
Is Windows audio disabled?
Is the volume issue there with different software playing music...Jriver, Roon etc?

its supposed to have a usb key with drivers on it which isnt in box... im trying a workaround.
The USB 'key fob' thingy was definitely put in the box. It was in it's own little plastic bag and I might have slipped it in with the instructions.
The volume pot works as a pot should do with full output at approx 100 on the scale, so you have lots of control low down, where most controls nowadays go from nothing to clipping in 1/4 rotation. To get ample volume you will probably have it at 60 but there's plenty more to go.
Yeah volume is at 85/90 and that's not especially loud. Needs to go up to 110 or so to get a bit extra beat. It goes all way to 180.
Just with these speakers being uber efficient it seems a long way to go to get sound.. First 50 does very little tbh.
This is on usb digital from pc and coaxial via digione. Both are approx same level. I've not got an analogue source to try that. It's possible it's louder.
As for the key I will search again for it but I got the download off of pathos, a win 7 one which is the only one really bar an xp.. The rest are for mac.
Nice separation and soundstage.
It takes a bit of warming up tbh but bring hybrid its to be expected and fact its really not been used means it will burn I a fair bit yet. Dac sounds good.. Think its wolfson. Think valves are 88's.
Tis quite heavy and not as big as I thought.
I could remove the table and have it in middle I think.. What ya all think, or keep it up tophttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200714/8f0b2d3bff8d11c2c09a5d660912924e.jpg
My £0.02
Table frames the Oppo nicely and makes for a nice "stack" running up to the TV mounted on the wall?
On the table sitting next to the Oppo would be a bit less busy looking maybe?
Pick yer preferred flavour. :)
Very nice Grant - the proper way to do a hybrid amplifier. 70W/channel ought to be quite sufficient.

Think I'd lose the table & have it in pride of place in the middle.

It's a very gentle volume control with many steps so that you can get exactly the volume you want even at very low levels. Far better than most where you can't set your preferred level very low down. I've had amps with just 40 steps, so you can never get exactly the volume you want - it's either too quiet, then one more notch and it's too loud.
Made a slight alteration for now but i might think about losing the table later when ive another set of hands.

just got speaker cable to make up.. stuff im using is a little thin; the older fisual... the sflex i have isnt long enough so ordered more of it.
might be better with something more exotic but funds are at zero lol
With my 8/9 watts valve power amp,
the volume never got past 11 o clock before the Eddingdales started vibrating picture frames on the wall.
Cable might be a good shout actually, 70 watts a side should be plenty I’d have thought?

Yup im quite confident it will eventually be much better than the quad, which is rather good itself. In fact the quads dac does dsd so im missing out on that. Also bluetooth not that i used it.
Also need to get the cd player connected to the amp at some point. Currently only got the pc and the digione on, although i can play cds on the digione.

i like this fisual barry. i already have a short set, about a metre long but to short for current needs so decided to get same again, just longer.
Yes, my speaker cables are only 1 metre long. In theory I could get away with lengths of less than a foot!
What I like about these cables is their very soft and flexible insulation and sheathing. IMO, a lot of audio cables are far too stiff and inflexible, which is why I make mine up using microphone cable.

yes mr floppy :eyebrows: i know what you mean, im not keen on having to bend a cable to my will etc as it ends up causing issues with connection points

lol, yes just going through changes.. thought it interesting to look back and see what i should have kept
Yeah defo.... Always interesting seeing that, and you've had some nice stuff.
Problem for me is that I'm not a box-swapper, so even though I've been in this game for nearly 40 years, I could still count the amount of full systems I've had on both hands!:D I've used and heard tons of kit in that time though, in terms of assessing it, but when something makes it into my system it tends to stay there as it's been *very* carefully chosen...
My current system, for example [have you see the pics I posted yesterday here in the Gallery?] has remained virtually unchanged for 10 years - certainly in terms of main components.I just hate making mistakes or bad choices (although inevitably that has occasionally happened), so minimise the likelihood of that as far as possible, along with any subsequent regrets!

You've sold a few things to me Grant . Denon DVD player , Tannoy speakers , and HRT DAC are the ones which come to mind . All at a very good price I may add :)
How's it going, Brian? Hope life's been treating you well:)
I'm completely out of touch in terms of where you're at with your system these days mate, so what's the score there?

Aye doin fine mate . Hope you and Del are keeping well .
System wise , I'm still using the server which Gary built me nearly 10 years ago ( and you heard when you visited ) with an HRT DAC ( bought from Grant ) and a big old Sony amp . I now use Dali speakers , but use headphones quite a lot now .
Also using a slightly modified GL75 with a Shure M55E / Jico cartridge occasionally .
Be good to see some old friends , like Grant and Gary , but restrictions mean that that's impossible at the moment . Hopefully soon :)
Is that a Promitheus tvc in one of the pictures Grant?

kefs are quite good.. decent all round.. the celestions were a build, and that was before i got the badges changed.. had been wharfedale cabs initially
they looked like this eventually..

Ah, that explains it!:)
I'm a big fan though of Wharfedale from the 60s to early 80s. Proper speakers from a great (then) British brand. Same with Celestion.
Marco.
My first speakers used a Wharfedale RS8 DD driver in a Wharefedale designed distributed port cabinet (volume, from memory 8" x 10" x 24"). Passed them on to my father when they were replaced with Quad 57s.
(My father got all of my 'starter' gear: Garrard SP25/II, Audio Technica AT66, etc. ;) )

I thought the sound quality of the Proart amps was remarkable. Not parting with mine.

Sorry Grant,
I find those heat sinks spelling out "Pathos", quite annoying from an aesthetic point of view. I'm sure it sound great, but I couldn't live with it.

yeah, he drove a vauxhall nova:eyebrows:
As a big fan of Art Deco, and owner of a few original pieces of such (Lalique, Dunhill and Clarice Cliff, among others), I can see exactly where Gaz is coming from, although I'm sure it was completely unintentional by the designers!
Personally I like the look of the amp, as it's 'purposeful', and I dig that... All that matters though is that Grant likes how it SOUNDS - and he appears to be pretty happy in that respect:)
yeah, he drove a vauxhall nova:eyebrows:
Soz, I must be in 'thick mode' again this morning... Did you hear the 'WHOOSH' noise, as it flew over my head, lol? So explain that one to me:hmm:
