Can't see why not, they seem to meet all the requirements. If the output turns out to be a bit high, an L pad can be used to bring them in line.
I've actually got a pair of the bigger HiVi isodynamic ribbon tweeters and they are very good.
got my decimals in wrong place there.lol aye about 100nf or so :D ordered a pair anyways. should have caps lying about that will do. think they are polyfilms

ordered a pair anyways.
I reckon they'll do the job nicely! :)
OK for the top end on a three way system too I'd think.

Thanks Geoff .
Well speaker 1 is finished for now. Will need some deading to the rear panel as it dies vibrate. Should increase bass a tad as well. Some bracing too. But was keen to hear it so its coming out of a monoblock (valve amp is goosed anyways) as intended for test purposes...

How does it sound?
... lovely mids and top end not too shabby either. Bass not too much but will improve with above additions. Very efficient as well. Amp on thst side is at 4. The kef at 7.5....and its 91db.
Cant wait to finish the other now[emoji3]

Looks very good Grant.
You won't get deep bass, but bigger cabinets would help. So might your supertweeters.
I have added a set of tweeters to try and it has helped a fair bit..back panel needs a bit of dampening. is vibrates a bit. some of that black stuff should solve it.. these tweeters that are coming will be better again i think....after saying that the bass is improving as i type. quite big cabs these..22*15*9 inch..dunno what that is in litres
That's the side that was busted. It fairly well camouflaged

sorry about that pic being sideways..dunno how
Amazing transformation on those things, they look straight out of the showroom.
You might get a beter balance with them closer to the wall, re-inforce the bass a bit?
Thanks Martin..and yes i think your right re wall being closer and it will be. have it back out in wshop for further fettling but am on to cab 2....took me 3/4hr just to get the driver and what he thought were speaker pillars:eek: 2 long star bent screws and 2 threaded bend bolts with overtightened nuts..thread damaged! at least it wadnt gonna fall out. pics later. time to do shopping
some pics of the 2nd case...in some ways its worse.

With everything going on I forgot to show my new toys. Have been discussing supertweeters with geoff and I decided yesterday to order good ones and make a set. But the day before I had ordered a made up set (cheap ones tbh) judt to try in meantime. It was lucky I did as the full ranges liked them reinforcing my need for a set. They added a bit of bass for some reason as well as top end. They are switchable small and quite neat. Work real nice with the kefs.

as for my claims the main system was forever fettled my wad decided to play up so the proart mono are back in as are the kefs with new stweets. have to say it all sounds very good with this tvc pre

it was there only set but sure theyll make more. not bad for money tbh.
alan whats the most likely thing to be causing a little roughness in the wad kel84 on 1 channel.. caps or resistors?
got a little more done on cab 2. its solid but badly chipped and scratched. level of abuse is remarkable and says somethinvvabout the original strength of them as a modern cab would have disintegrated.

shouldnt need an awful lot more tbh and the flash makes them look worse than they currently are as the repairs refract light differently

Unfortunately it's difficult to guess from a verbal description.
Best thing is to get a scope on it, particularly as one channel is good, the two channels can be compared.
Without a scope the respective voltage levels on each channel could be compared from the good channel to the rough, this might give a clue.
You need a techie to give it the once over. I don't think my fluence stretches past Manchester :mental:
:)
once i get the speaks finished i will have look.
ta for response....
These cabs according to my calculations are 48 litres so probably a bit short of the ideal. would have preferred 75, but will have to wait for something to appear on the bay or on here at the right price. I dont have the tools now to start from scratch. still make do and mend was my ma 'n' da's motto:lol:

There's a pair of Tannoy Berkeley cabinets on eBay at the moment Grant, but I guess they may be a bit big for your needs.
they'll be huge...will have a look though...probably 150 litres at a guess.
a bit less at a guess... 130ish ....probably would do but 75 pounds postage is a bit much
saw a set of warfedales unit5 or summat that I could go get at 100 .... crap speakers but the cabs look goo
Enjoying the system change funnily enough. Proart mono's controlled by the tvc, and kefs with super tweeters. listening to some classical styled Sting and sounds fab.

Tankyee Brian... glad someone liked it too :) If the other one sounds like the first then I could have hit the jackpot. They are(the drivers) apparently, highly regarded in Germany.

They look better than they had any right to considering the catastrophic delivery. Nice one Grant!
Being relatively familiar with older drivers like these I can visualise what they may sound like.
How would you describe the sound?
brian2957
21-07-2015, 14:23
Very sweet mid and with the s tweets have added to the highs extention. I know that they dont help the bass response but it does give the lugs that impression. moving them closer in has helped as well bass wise. its a pretty even response right accross as far as i can hear as well. They are probably 45/t0 years old but sound as good as any ive tried..maybe better.

I had a feeling they'd be pretty decent. It's surprising what a simple speaker can do.
Havent managed to do a freq test yet with my ears but hoping it will be pretty good. Yes these big Telefunkens are very nice sounding speakers indeed. Quite pleased to have got them; fortunately they are not much known over here....my gain;)

That actually applies to a lot of my gear.

I might add you cannot see through them normally, its just the flash giving that see through look. I meant to add dark foam in between and had it cut for first but forgot to put it in:doh:. Didn;t want to remove the cloth as I only had the 2 pieces. Well, you learn from your mistakes

The system looks good in monochrome. It makes the speakers look reminiscent of the monitors the BBC were using in the late sixties.
How do they speeks sound with the grilles removed Grant?

Really enjoyed it mate . I like to try my hand at some simple DIY occasionally and was glad to be of some help . The speakers were very easy to work on and IMHO our work on them did make a big difference to an already fantastic speaker . So much so that I've asked for first dibs on these speakers if you ever decide to sell them . Yes they really are that good . Your system was sounding very good indeed Grant , right down my street . I really think you should settle for a little while and enjoy what you've got , because it's pretty special in this latest incarnation mate.

Good sleuthing Grant. Could be an easy fix.........
The voltage on the right hand side of the caps C8/9 and C10/11 as shown above should be virtually zero.
The voltage on the left hand side can be 10V different between channels, that is just due to the variation of the valves.
If the 9V is only on the right side of C10 then just change C10 and that should cure it.
Have you got a capacitor, I could send you one.
 Alan

It'll be interesting to know what you make of those Grant. I have a feeling they will be rather good. The bigger HiVi units I have are excellent.
I'm losing track here. Which project are the ribbon tweeters for?

ah well is the catch. it was for the telefunkens but may use them elsewhere now. got a couple of boxes that should fit
re the wad amp...had removed board and replaced said cap with a poly film and away she goes sounding great again. cap was out of spec and leaking dc. it was likely that the last time when ali had it but was intermittent. anyways its sounding mighty fine again.

Going to fix those horn tweeter Ive got lying about. Pretty sure they have a high resistance joint. Not sure what to do with them tbh but hey ho sure something will come up . These nice ribbons will be my main prioject now, and am going to either put them in boxes...I have a couple of plastic ones that should just about fit or may fit them into 1 of the boxes I'm getting like the fanes

The spec indicates they will be ideal as supertweeters.
The spec indicates they will be ideal as supertweeters.
Those Chinese ones? they look well made and presented Geoff. I intend putting a 3 way switch i so they can have different settings to suit differing situations and speakers.
They claim 2000hz as the crossover but thats way too low in my opinion...hell that would take a 10uf cap. .... my hearing goes at 11k so ideally I'd bring them oin a bit before that..maybe 8/10k so 2.2uf I think

There may be a bunch of interesting tweeters up for grabs when I get back from hols. Not sure quite what I've got stashed away, but I know there'll be some 'goodies'. I only keep the decent ones. All part of 'The Grand Clearout'! :D

No. I would not use 2kHz. Not even with a steep intro slope. If you're just using a cap, I'd suggest 6kHz or 7kHz as minimium. With a cap you're on a 6db/oct slope, meaning that at say 3kHz you're still only 6db below max.

...as for the Fane speakers I ordered..they arrived today
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/29/b80b7bdbeee3f81ecf708067fa9f6bec.jpg
very well packed but one of the drivers has come adrift .on opening I have found it to be in fine condition fortunately. the other speaker has a small bit of damage to the grill cloth although this may not have been in carriage.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/29/5207e9d45dc6bf592c6dd6a5d1c7e121.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/07/29/67277931cd16f97cdaba216e1f812120.jpg
Not having the best of luck re damage, but they look quite nice drivers, and nominally the one I checked came in at about 12 ohms.

Ah well. fitted and its just the same. sound via hdmi to tv but nothing out of dac and same fail on set up. forgot its name. pissed off but there you go folks... rpi no more...i proclaim ;).
error is ... fail..startpar returned failure
so its alk packed up and put out of my sight...ggrrr.... back to flakey but relyable lappy through the mini sabre and on to monarchy dac for now..glad i left it there now.

IMO this is well worth persevering with Grant . It sounded excellent when I visited :)
Stripped the Fanes down before some work..lol... more than some tbh. baffles are not strong or stiff enough so will double that up. drivers look near mint. someone has had a go at installing a tweeter i think(badly).that will need attention too...Took half an hr just to get the grill cloth off with a hammer and chisel...glued everywhere and it was like bostik lol. it was damaged on one soeaker and tbh was nowhere near transparent..I will pop some strengthening in on sides too.. they seem to be 15 watt jobs.. cabs have a number of screw holes through for some unknown reason so a fair bit of work ahead.
will try to pop some pics in when i can.

I got another set of proarts monos Brian last week but just came the other day(one of the reasons Im skint lol) connected just 1 to the jmlabs speakers upstairs and have to say it sounded bloody lovely. They are really nice speakers, and these amps are excellent(for my tastes anyways)
re the Fanes; I will now have to try and work out what size of base port to put in

Yup, I agree about the JM Labs mate . Excellent speakers , just a bit too powerful for my little room otherwise I would have had them mate.
the new rpi has landed. once i recover from my trip out im gonna give it a whirl with the new dac i think and volumio..its the only one ive used.
The new rpi2b+ and I sabre audiophonics dac is up and running now. sound is definately superior to the rpi2b and iq dac. night n day actually. so think i can say even though ive been dragged down a blind alley and dropped in a barrel of poop i am now smelling like a rose:D
Have tested the old combo and its now decided to work and selected the correct driver ...that is odd but hey ho ive got 2 rpi/dacs now

Removing the rca side of the box allows it to fit. The outside rca hole would need to be elongated. May just get another box and put the old one back in this but it will suffice for now

The other addition was a CAT.6 Ethernet cable. the one I was using was bog standard and not very long. this 3 metre one will allow me to move the pi closer to the system should I desire. As I am not streaming over the cable it wont make any sonic difference (citation needed;) ) but thought, ...hey future proof it
edit; I have just ripped and transferred 4 albums over the network to the pi's hdd successfully so that part of the system works as well thankfully. It saves having to remove the drive and copy the new albums from pc. It now comes up on the upstairs pc as moode rather than volumio as it should. there are some differences as it shows up to 4 usb slots for usb where volumio only shows the one that has a drive in.
anyone wanting to try moode 2.1 should give it a whirl. its a bit more complex on set up but it does have a better graphic interface and lots more adjustable settings, plus upscaling etc.
Some listening to MoOde this morning again and cannot make my mind up as to whether i love it or not. its so different (i think)?.. difficult as it takes a fair bit of time to swap so its not really able to do switch tests.
Some files it sounds really good. others im not sure...im a tad confused at moment but will endevour to persevere:eyebrows:

What difference does zero buffer make to SQ?
looking at the processor it seems to be just ticking over at its defaultcsetting so i may try halving the buffer and see what that dies to the processor value and to sq. wont do any harm
ive halved the buffer from 2048 to 1024 and it seems to have increased cpu usage only slightly. sounds good with no stutters etc . might even be better sounding re timing.

No, that they wont but hoping they will be ok. have ordered a couple of bass ports. should come soon hopefully. as they are not big cabs thought I would just get 50 mm ones. 110 mm long I think. might not work but think I will try them without reflex ports first in case they are fine without.
Finish with these holes soon then a stain and some finishing of choice....doing them in Rosewood. Going to do them in french polish style I think as they aint too big.....maybe ;)
Some more progress made , although not without an error or 2.. a spillage too... doh. anyways some pics.

Thanks for the reply, definaly something on my I want to hear list, especially at the price for both of the seems such a bargain, my coda's are rated at 91db sensitivity so it all looks a good match for each other.
The telefunkens look great with the new badges btw.
first trial if speakers without reflex ports went better than expected. rather nice.

Looks like you're having fun. Hope you're feeling OK today! :)
A bit better thanks. Weathers nice too.... yes i have decided to go with ports after all. need to charge my drills up though.. have done a trial hole and fit will be ok with a touch of shimming.. only hole cutter with enough depth is a 54mm...the port is 51 i think.
I have an electric one somewhere or had but its unfindable at moment.

Looking good Grant . These look quite a bit smaller than the Telefunkens . How do you know the precise size of the ports and where to position them mate .
Glad you're feeling better today .
I dont !! just taking a guesstimate. probably alk wrong but no try no know. I looked at different speakers done on web and adapted to what size i have..if it sounds crap i can always plug it up.

Not got much on this week mate so i will be around.
Lovely job there Grant as ever. The Telefunken in particular are very good looking and I'm sure sound just as good.
Thank you. Yes the teles are super sounding and a fair bit bigger than the fanes. Think im gonna like these too.
Got a new project to start once I get a set of drivers for them but no rush. Will need to get some thick mdf for baffle
I've got too many speakers now. For me anyway. I pick up some Dovedale 3 on Friday and that puts me at three pairs of twelve inch drivers to find room for.

Yet another pair arrived here today. At least they're tiny. A pair of cheapo little (Chinese) Philips FWB-MCM11 speakers with ribbon tweeters. I was just wandering past a charity shop with the grand daughter and they had clearance items in the window, including these. Seemed rude not to buy them at a fiver. Not tried them yet, but word has it they sound decent! :)

Stock piccie!
Well at least they are small, and a fiver is pretty cheap. Is that the ones with the alloy driver?

Should be just about the right size to fit the Dovedale cabinet openings. Will definitely need tuned ports in a box that size though.
Yes your right. Infavt i could get away with the current hole and probanly the port hole too.would have to play about with leangth id say. Its a 12" driver..thought they were 10,s originally. Cabs on this on look good and just needing a surface redo. Pics to add

it could alsi be fitted with a supertweeter and use the switches on back for on. Off. And a different freq. Might be interesting and would fill the hole nicely. Even got a set that would probably do. Or i could fill the hole and use them upside down with port at bottom as in the teles

That's what I'd do. I've never fitted supertweeters into cabinets. I have them on their own small baffle on top of whichever speaker they're being used with. Sometimes facing upwards (gives interesting effects).

Ha Ha. I was watching these and wondered if that was your bid Grant. Can't be bad at that price! :)
Yep, that was mine. someone bid agin me late on and pushed the price up a tad, but hey ho, its a set of 12" full-range drivers for £40 so cant say fairer. good spot mate. They are natural back loaders and the cabs are front loading so I might have to alter things a bit, which wont be as easy as usual as the backs are sealed. never agreed with sealed backs.
Rola Celestion, there's a name from the past.

Yes Alan, I would think they will be pretty sensitive and easy to drive. If I get the port right they may sound darn good.
Thats the tidiest Ive had the shed for some time lol.
As my tannoy dc's have not sold, I think I will pull the main drivers and fit them into the Rogers cabs I have and make Ronnoy Dc's out of them ;) ( lets hope they dont become Todgers) they should be a fair bit like system 800's me thinks. Shame to split the floorstanders but as they are they are not likely to be used by me..... I do have an eye on an exceptional pair of lovelies which at 8" are just right, so if I can find the readies I may swoop very slowly for them:scratch:
I also am looking forward to the Rola's coming(going into the Dovedale cabs), although it will be another week yet as the guy is going to deliver them in person(he will be up this way apparently). I think these projects will take me the rest of the year.
Badged up the Fanes now.. Quite pleased with them

Yes it was juha i think. Not sure if the current xovers would be able to be adapted or not. It must have a section that crosses over to the bass driver but would think it may be altered. Maybe one for Paul or someone with more knowlege than me...like anyone:eyebrows:

I'll take a stab at it for you Grant, then anyone else chip in if you think they are wrong.
From the top: 220nF, guess 1.5uF (15 would be too much for the tweeter feed I think).
Guessing 1mH, 4.7uF, then for LF 1.2mH (again 12 would seem too much), 30uF, 10 ohms, 10uF.
:)
Thanks Alan. I could only decipher a resister and 1 cap for sure. lol. that helps...cheers g

With the aid of a washer and a stablising nut it will work fine. Some mordite etc will help round any gaps although there looks to be none.

Think your right. adds a fair bit to the weight too. Might fit tweeters through the rear switches for the hell of it, with the ability to switch them off/ on etc. I do have a set doing nowt and it will fill the hole; otherwise I will just block it off but leave wiring in place just in case:lol:
as for bass port, well there is a nice big hole where it will go but length is going to be interesting. I have something that I can vary the length to test I think.

You can buy variable length ports for just such situations. Haven't seen any recently but they exist. Just a sliding tube arrangement.

Diameter may be a bit small for a cabinet that size. You could probably double up to good effect.
Ive got a huge diameter hole at top left and a tube that fits it and goes right to back. Guess a driver was maybe housed in it. If it was the bass port I think it would have been too close to rear.

That's the mid chamber. If the tube is still secure, try (if you can reach) cutting a couple of inches off to get it clear of the back and make sure there's no damping around it. It may make a suitable port.
Thought that geoff. Yes it comes out no bother. Tjought I might try a little tuning with end removing a bit at time. Its quite solid but might benefit from a coating
These 5 inch Philips drivers have came. Look nice and will get 3 a csb no bother if I want.
