Everything has its time? I came to same conclusion, after the LPs had sat here untouched for (at least) 10 years! They went to a friend withRecord shop (his pension?) followed by my 'Custom' Rock +Merlin. The CDs only get played in the car......I think of them as 'Hard copy/Reserve' in case the HDD fails! Though I haven't ventured into Blu-tooth etc, so need to catch up?

Yes. When I bought it, I thought "Why does all hi-fi have to be boring black boxes?". So I got a spray-painter friend to (literally!) give it some sparkle! He added the decoration himself. Max T liked it when I showed him.

It's still somewhere in our community.
I've only got 3 LPs left. 'The original cover 'Catch a fire' by Bob Marley ('Zippo' cover!)Being left in my will to a friend.
Santana's triple album, 'Lotus' that unfolds and unfolds across the room!
John + Yoko 'Wedding Album' -apparently worth a lot.
And.......a Julio Iglesias picture disc!!

Just been trying out my new tonearm set tool. Works really well with the geodisc. Gets it spot on. The trouble with geo is following the raised line all the way bang on to centre of the tonearm base pivot. This makes it a breeze.

Had a speaker failure today. Managed to get to bottom of it. A crimped wire gave up its grip. So fixed it as also one of feet was loose so did that.

Also did the dac mod to put vc into circuit and fitted one of jerrys valves. The tesla. All sounds rather good and I have better control.
Is it better in? Don't know yet but I have control over 3 Amps and 4 speakers with one vc now so much easier

Tidied the setup and readjusted speaker angles

Quoted specification for the SP1 is 2.0 - 4.0g VTF and 25deg VTA. If it were me, I would add 0.5g to your VTF.

Also, be aware that the effective tip mass for the SP1 is 2.6mg! Anything greater than 1mg will almost certainly damage the inner grooves, so I wouldn't use the cartridge to play your most treasured records.

Used a battery for power. It's a. Imuto 20,000mAh and very good sonically. 5v of course. I have an adaptor on the power lead going it with a rocker switch so I don't have to disconnect when not in use and there is a USB fly lead there for charging in situ.

On my phono stage I also use a battery. 12v Anker

Like your new B&O cartridge, daftee. Like Barry, I've also always rated them. A question for Barry (unless you know): were the cartridges actually made by B&O, or did someone else make them to their spec, such as Ortofon?

I've always wondered that, as whenever I hear one of those B&Os, it rather reminds me of an SPU!:)

Marco
08-06-2018, 09:15
Fair enough, if that's the case. It's just that some of them, such as the one Grant's got, share many sonic traits with SPUs... They both have that 'rich, effortless musicality', which is also found in the DL-103 - cartridges made for music lovers, rather than hi-fi freaks!;)

B&O made all their own cartridges in-house and had no connection with Ortofon (other than being Danish!).

The SP1 pre-dates him but their main turntable engineer in the 1960s and 70s was Subir Pramanik, who invented the stylus profile that bears his name.

There is no connection, apart from both being Danish companies. The fixed-coil generator of the Ortofon cartridges used a principle called "variable magnetic shunt", whereby the motion of the stylus modulates the reluctance of the magnetic 'circuit', and hence the flux threading the fixed coils. B&O cartridges also modulate the magnetic reluctance, but by different mechanical means: best classified as 'moving iron'.

It's been a long time since I gave my B&O SP6 a spin, so cannot really comment on how the sound compares with that of an SPU, or any of the early Ortofon cartridges (such as the SL15E or the S15TE (with integral transformer)).

Moving iron, moving armature, induced magnet..........variations on a theme! :)

Which XLM? I've heard a lot of difference between the XLM III, XLM II and XLM I. The VLM's don't compete.

Barry
20-06-2018, 14:25
There are very few cartridges which are truly 'moving magnet'. Most are either induced magnet (e.g. ADCs), moving iron (e.g. B&O and Decca) or variable reluctance (e.g Ortofon). To be pedantic, such cartridge should be referred to as "fixed coil" in order to distinguish them from "moving coil" designs; but the term MM is a convenient portmanteau term, and one which is now well established in the audio lexicon.

I have one, and it's very sensitive and accurate. Just check that you get the same reading with the spirit level rotated to four positions (north, east, south and west); that way you can be assured the bubble is set accurately within the housing.

Back in the day, my old record player did not have adjustable feet, so I used a deck of old playing cards that was missing a few, and use them for shims to level the ‘table. The floor was fairly uneven in my old house, and I used a lot of cards to level it. And it worked well too! Stayed level for 20 years.

Some of the feet don't adjust so well or not at all now due to age and repairs. They are I think micro seiki ones and they fall apart and need a spot of glue to fix. So I did similar and used thin rubber shims. Feet still isolate well enough tho

I'd expect that F307 to work nicely into the big Celestions Grant. The tweeters in the Ditton 130's look rather similar to those used in Sony branded speakers back then.

they are HF 1001 dome tweeters. the drivers are 205mm long throw woofers.

different sound from 70's Celestion (Ditton 15, 44, etc), more precise, with great imaging.
The crossover was computer optimized.
The original version Celestion 130 are also far harder to find for sale than 15, 33 or 44... why sell something that sounds truly great,
for little money?

Celestion description:
"An excellent base for a true high fidelity system, but at a low price - The New Review
On both sides of the Atlantic, the critics were not wrong.
Awarding their laurels, they all mentioned the surprising price performance of the Ditton 130.
Designed for owners of medium power (up to 50 watts) amplifiers,
the Ditton 130 is equipped with an HF 1001 tweeter and a long throw 205mm woofer.
Again, laser analysis of the drivers allowed gains in efficiency and definition.
The Ditton 130 is also better sited on the shelves of a library than placed on the ground"

* MADE IN ENGLAND
* 2-way 2-driver loudspeaker system
* 8 Ohms, 87dB sensitivity
* 60Hz to 20kHz, almost flat response (+/-3dB), -6dB at 48 Hz, -12 dB at 35 Hz
* Recommended Amplifier: 10 to 50W
* Normal listening level: 1 Watt output
* All drivers made by Celestion in-house
* 8" woofer with rubber surround
* 1st order x-over, for minimal phase shift, minimal distortion
* Superb 1" HF 1001 soft dome steel net protected tweeter

Reminding me how I got 'into' hi-fi.
My Father made up a stereo by Heathkit - Amp, tuner, turntable, cabinet, plus speakers. (The electronics came as parts, of course.)
At 6th form i put together a stereo in spare time in woodwork shop. With NO idea about sound baffles etc., in speakers!
Used a 13 X 8 concentric unit in a big box (X2) and bought two amp strips from an electronic shop near Mersey tunnel (valves!)
Since then I've made a couple of speakers more recently, including my Polystyrene Zigmahornets (pic) and some PAWO 'horns'.
I owned Klipschorns for 20 years and often fancied making a set myself, but have had no useable corners in our house! (Windows/doors etc..)
My current set-up is partly hand-made, though not by me. Pass F3 amp from Dave Hewitt (RIP this site).
LDR Pre by Richard (Awkward by design).
Ocellia speakers, though 'commercial' use their own-made ply plus hand-crafted PHY units.
Even the PS1 I use for occasional CD play is seriously messed with!

Yep - knew it ;)
Hope you get on with it Grant, I have the original (without Phono input) and have been sorely tempted to upgrade. Great amp and can't really fault the DAC performance, particularly USB with Audirvana. Analogue inputs are the real bonus in the package.

Well curious what your views will be .... and how the (upgraded) headphone input fairs with the Nuraphone cans.

Its the old near flat talk3. Not sure if its the good one or not, but not to my taste.
I bought a load of cable..think its focal, and made a short pair for monos that sit on top of speakers. Ive got plenty left, but not sure when i will be up to making it. Just doing this has near done me in sadly.
Still ive got remote to pc and remote to pre now, plus remote to the power switch.

I can if i wish add back in my dac with the we valve as the amp has 2 analogues plus a mm preamp..
But hoping to reduce clutter and cables.

These blocks are surprisingly good and have seen off all comers inc valves

not moved them Ed; they have been there for quite a while. Quad doesnt have wifi; just bluetooth. so an hd transmitter or usb, coax or tos. Thought it had wifi but i was wrong. not tried bluetooth as of yet, but its just a receiver. cd quality tho; will get to it.lol

early days Gary. its different. will give it time, and also want to get cables made when up to it, so i can hear its power amp section properly. no rush tho, and as a pre its very good. very handy too. Along with the little lappy im using for music it makes for a nice setup(its got little on it bar the music progran). hard to beat my power amps tho, even if im the only one that thinks so:D i believe a couple of valve monos would be ideal tbh. my speakers are very neutral so will like a bit of valve. unlikely to find any in my price range tho.

Great score that; a £200 plus phono stage in the integrated just makes it even better vfm.

Yup, those lovely speaks of yours need some glowing bottles (as it was what they were originally built for), so when your next windfall comes along, that's what to spend it on!;)

Marco.

Too pricey for good one I think. Still to try the vena, s own output stage. Need some good speaker cord first. See if it's better than the monos. It might be the short cable is the success but hard to prove

Have you had a chance to try the Nuraphones with the upgraded HP output yet?

That is another variable that might just swing it for me..

(the Nuraphones are bloody fantastic BTW - thanks again for the code for those [emoji106])I've ordered an extention for the nura cable so I can try the vena, s headphone socket. Will advise. Meantime I might be able to stretch the oppos cable that far to try. That's today's task

The code is still available AFAIK for anyone

New wires plumbed in(fisual); sounding much better through its own power section now the Vena2. MUCH BETTER. just shows that speaker cable makes a big difference.

Trying out the HD bluetooth from my other PC with attached Avantree Leaf dongle. Sounds pretty decent.

My stockpile has reduced a bit but still takes up half a room

First is kefs, celestions and mordant.

Second is my small telefunkens. Cabinets below are fancy backless cases that have a set of fane full range in.

Third is leak amp and tuner. Pioneer dvd, Pioneer amp and variac, a pair of monos and a lappy.

Fourth is a mix including a akai tape deck.

Good to catch up me old China, your system was sounding very good.
Nice wide soundstage...enjoyed hearing my Joe Bonemassa track on it.

In other news...
the AC draw from the socket seems a solid 247 Volts, would never have known that without your regen, cheers!
Take regular readings over the week and set the ‘Big mutha’ BMU input voltage taps accordingly.

Thanks for the coffee too mate, cracked open a bag for my morning cuppa and it was delish. :)

Been listening to the Fisual S-Flex . Deffo an improvement. Their small 1 metre size might also help, but also being 4mm may be too. Different style of insulation as well.
Overall i like these; bass is bigger, tighter and more refined. Soundstage is even wider & deeper too. Raspy electric guitar and bass is more realistic imo.
Imelda May was really sweet, and the Capitol sudios sessions are swinging nicely. That is from PC (audirvana)to RPI to XS with valve section to Quad Vena2 To Proart monos to Speakers. Quad is a really nice pre.(its strongest point)Best ive used.

they have big plastic or metal outers etc so guessing someone ran over box or layed a pallet with tub on top. a ton of parcels will do it.
Shame as they dont come up often, but maybe for best as i find these s-flex hitting the spot
