well i switched everytging off except the power amp and 98% of it is still there so pretty sure that proves it. probably the transformers i guess...nothing audible once music is on and a lot less than the fans on the monos

Aye good, however mine is silent from the listening position with 92-94db speakers, so something isn't right..

It's not volume dependent, so whatever it is, is after the volume pot.

its almost like it has excessive gain....

I found another telefunken ecf80 as thats whats in. replaced the left channel one and a fair chunk of the hum has gone now. it was a tad microphonic so it was fortunate that i had a spare.

Due ti my system going funny and sounding poor and the flac side going completely nuts and outputting rubbish a decided to suffer for musics sake and get stuck in :eyebrows:
Decided first to swap out the monster cable with one of Geoffs specials as that was the plan anyways between pre and power.
for the record the hum all but disappeared with cables removed suggesting that problem may be a mismatch with pre(possibly too much gain). new canle in..hum back but sounding better a bit.
pc now fixed. it seems to have taken a pc equ of a brainstorm and dropped info...anyways thats now fixed too. sounds pretty decent again. now although sounded better.

not tried vinyl yet but cds just dont sou!d great...a bit hard in the top end. that cable has improved matters and if cables do burn in then it may improve more or my brain will:eyebrows:

Brigadoon

Hmmm cable burn-in. Or not.... Thats one big can of worms.

Personally, i believe that eveything needs time to...lets call it "settle in" - this principle spplies to everything else, so why not audio. I mean, its acceoted practce that we let a roast "rest" for about 10 mins after taking ut out of the oven - technically that could be called a bit of twaddle, as it's not cooking or being moisturised ir anything, but the simple truth IMHO is that a rested joint will taste better than a non-rested one every time.

I'm really interested to hear your thoughts once the new cable has had a chance to settle.

And WRT the hum - are you sure its not an earth loop?

struth
09-05-2015, 21:10
I will be testing that once I make up an earthing lead. Was out in the shed tidying etc so I can find things....didnt work that well

Brigadoon

Which, the tidying or the making up an earth lead? :)

struth
10-05-2015, 13:40
Tidying!

As i had done some tidying i decided today to put connectors onto the 2 lengths of TALK speaker cable and give them a go...i might need there etra length if i move anyhow.
had full set of Voso plugs and enough shrink.

Conclusion is so far i like the sound. Seems to be a better broader soundstage via cd anyways...all ive tried so far.possibly clearer and more presence.

Pleased with the new speaker cable and rca link between pre and power. sounds fine. Replaced the jj valves for sovtek m and think i have a preferance for the Ruski ones(nice call Ali),

Have tried earthing over various things to see if the hum will decrease but no. I dont think its that but probably gain causing it. Of opinion i need to try a passive pre for comparison.

Brigadoon

he sent a tungsram and a telefunken so i contacted him. swapped out one tele and the microphonics stopped. didnt help the hum tbh..pretty sure as the wad is sensitive there may well be an impedance mismatch causing excesdive gain to over load the system. need to try a passi e to be sure tjough. not overly a problem tbh but it would be nice to be sure...suppose it could be a cap in the pre as well and its only shiwing because of the sensitivity of the wad. might dig out the clone and try it .

Firebottle
13-05-2015, 11:06
Grant, put a short circuit across the input to the WAD, then if you still have the hum on the output it's down to the WAD.

Firebottle
13-05-2015, 11:55
OK, what is the model of amp, WAD ?? Is it the KEL84?

There must be a modification that can fix this.

Just had a thought, might be worth a shot to see which stage is giving the hum. It won't harm any furry creatures in doing so (or the amp ;)).
Remove both ECF80's and power the amp up and see if you have any hum then.

:)

struth
13-05-2015, 12:18
yes its a kel84...tried that and hum disappears with the drivers out

Firebottle

Does it still hum with the volume control on minimum?

An extra RC filter in the HT might be worth trying, feeding the HT to the two input pentode sections. Would cost buttons so nothing lost if no improvement. Ask Ali or Gaz nicely and he might be able to do it for you.

If that doesn't cure it it could be layout possibly.

:) Alan

Its a possible Alan. I am going to try lifting the earth on the pre first.

Ali Tait
14-05-2015, 17:45
I would've investigated further but Grant wanted the amp back. Won't be layout as it's a pcb. I have one and it's very quiet.

It'll be something simple quite likely.

Brigadoon
14-05-2015, 21:10
It sounds like something simple - but thise can be a bugger to trace sometimes. Process of elimination, but tricky when there are various permutations along the chain.

I may have missed this but did you hear the hum when the amp was with you Ali?

struth
14-05-2015, 21:30
Yes it hums when connected to an active pre amp. it did at Ali's as well. as you say there are a few possibles, and I dare say I will find it eventually. Its more a case of I'd like to find it than that it bothers me.....:eyebrows: why did you climb a mountain...coz i was there!!:)

struth

Possible Rich. I could have used a powered hub with the other one and may yet but a bigger psu may well work. The WD my book is a damn fine hdd though and as I was not using it apart from some back up storage it is nice to recycle things and give them a new lease of life. Got a quad of Reflektor 6P14P's today. Sound very nice as well in the Wad. Good price and fast delivery from Ukraine, which made a change. Last lot of valves I got from a supposed good seller from Grmany were the wrong valves and after repeated offers to replace them, he then balked and just refunded me. So all Germans dont have the great service ethic tat I have become accoustomed to....

Further investigations into my hum with the wad power amp have led me to the cd player. its interesting ....with the pre mains plug pulled out i still get hum.if i remove cd player from the pre hum goes away. connect it back up and its back even though cd player is switched off. all interesting stuff and it may be earth related as the cd player having a fig of 8 connector. cant see howit can be anything else really at moment but will give it some thought tonight over a glass of red

Try an earth wire from the CD player casing to the pre-amp casing Grant. Who knows? It may help.

struth
01-06-2015, 16:23
well i have tried various conutations of which the only one that works is to disconnect the cd player. ..so I have currently taken the wad out of service....possibly for good...piece of junk!!:steam:

put the proArts in and no hum and sound truely very good tbh. if it were not for the fans i wouldnt bother changing again tbh. guess they dont bother me too mu h and could be slowed down if ness.

meanwhile the wad will have to be tested with other gear. if the same happens then there must be a problem with the amp and it will have to be traced and fixed. if itcworks with other gear then it may just be a mismatch.

wine for thought and soothe my frayed nerve endings......

yep. gonna reconnect that soon. the later models have the single vol i think and the other being to selector....its sounding nice with the proarts. the 2 vol controls are something to get used to and only having 2 inputs is a bugger but solvable i guess. its a heavy wee thing.not sure about the colour either:eyebrows:

If inputs are awkward, it shouldn't be too hard to add a couple more with a suitable rotary switch I'd have thought. If I recall, there's plenty of space inside and room on the back.

I quite like the way it looks, but painting the case black (or any other colour) shouldn't be hard, then just bung a couple of matching knobs on.

Solidair Audio magnetic levitation feet for hifi (Box of four 6Kg model) are machined by hand from brass and stainless steel to accurate tolerances. Designed to considerably reduce vibration in hifi equipment.

The working range of loads are from 0.5Kg to 5Kg per foot or 2Kg to 20Kg for a set of four feet (1 box), which will cover most equipment except for heavy valve amps.

You should notice an immediate improvement to the sound quality.

Typically, improved soundstage, harshness removed from high notes and more clarity, detail and solidity. On AV equipment a clearer crisper picture should be seen as well.

A quote from Julius Hyde, designer and maker of the legendary Impulse and Aspara horn speakers: "My transistor amp now sounds like a good valve amp, less harsh, the hardness and brittleness have been taken away. They also move much better than the plastic magnetic feet I also have."

Inverted dome tweeters.

The particular advantage of the inverted dome tweeter of our Studio Monitors is the optimization of the mechanical coupling between the voice coil and the dome. The voice coil is fixed at mid-height on the dome and uniformly moves the cone entire surface. The positive dome is only joined at its edge, causing it to be inactive beyond 16kHz for a flexible surface. The inverted dome directly radiates into the air, with maximum efficiency, which is translated by an extremely precise soundstage. The dome’s response curve is clearly more linear than that of any positive dome. It provides better space dispersion and very low directivity, contrary to ribbon tweeters. The inverted dome tweeter offers unequalled dynamics, enabling sound engineers to very precisely control compression.

The image precision (height, width and depth) is outstanding and makes the positioning of each element very easy, as well as allows one to exactly assess the reverb tails.

Looks very like the Focal T90K tweeters as supplied to Impulse for their H6/Lali loudspeakers. From healthy ones I've tested, they have a remarkably good off axis response measured but strangely never sound that way! Nice even on axis response with a bit of a lift higher up but a little prone at this age with the joint to the voice coil de bonding. There's a few good alternative new replacements though should those ever go elbows up. Some attempt in design at reducing edge diffraction too . Tweeter below the woofer was a design arrived at by many manufacturers to minimise audible lobe errors which occur with cancellation. With the normal arrangement of tweeter above woofer, when a listener stands, the lobing affect causes a vertical axis drop in perceived output due to cancellation. When a tweeter is located below the woofer, this lobing effects are more present towards the floor, so better vertical off axis behaviour is the intended result. (unless you enjoy listening to music laying on the floor!).

Over the years you have made changes to improve and suit the sound that you like. I suspect that it sounds really good! I have to say that back in 1992 or so, at a high end store that I worked at, I got grief for liking inexpensive speakers that 'grooved'. Everyone compared $2500 speakers to the $300 to $750 speakers that I liked. No surprise that the expensive Proac Response 2 were better, but it was always fun to hear the less expensive speakers!

Money doesn't always mean a great sound. and of course everyone has differing tastes in sound as well Don. Then there is the listening space and furnishings to take into account....then you have to think of the walls and floors; then the neighbours/ wife/ kids ; the list goes on.

I currently have 4 sets of pretty decent speakers... Tannoy d70(637's) , IMF super compacts, Kef Cara,s, and JMLabs prodige's....oh yes and a set of Cantons as well..... of the 4 mains, the Tannoys would be thought of as the best and dearest, but my preference within my situ is the Kef's....at the moment lol. tbh there is not much in it with them all,s the all do some things better, but such is the fihi world we love.

also been checking the grill frames..took the old covering off and both were snapped on both sides doh!
so was humming and hawing about sending them away but cost was perhaps too much for a speaker that may not be worth it so was tidying up in the shed and came across a bit of CA super thin glue and accelerator left over from a job i did a while ago. amazingly it was still ok so gave it a go.

walpurgis
18-06-2015, 22:49
Those main drivers are lovely units.

I know it would entail a fair amount of work, but I'd maybe be inclined to look for a pair of System 800 crossovers or build crossover replicas and house the duals in suitable cabinets.

It's possible the crossover has two separate sections for each driver, which could help if just the section for the upper unit can be used on its own. You'd need to check the crossover spec and crossover point.

If you're experiencing bass 'overload' at the moment maybe similar sized sealed cabs with those drivers in may be the answer. You could possibly utilise the existing ones and remove the panel separating the upper and lower chambers, blanking off the lower driver aperture.

Me personally, I'd build a pair of transmission line boxes for them, but in your environment, I reckon you'd end up with bass overkill again. :)

struth
18-06-2015, 23:05
it appears to be a single xover alas, so its not really feasible without a silly amount of work. looks like an extension in separate box. I have ordered card sheets etc so may just make up a nice pair of bespoke boxes that can take any trouble. Just add it to the price.they are worth a fair bit so have some scope re price......I like making boxes.

Ran these today out in shed with a proart in stereo mode and wasnt overly impressed tbh. highs were fine as expected as its a good tweeter but the rest was a bit vague. dunno if the kef 6.5 inch driver is a good un...think its a B160. maybe the xover or maybe i am just spoiled but my Cantons (mind you these are small but were very expensive in the day),blew them out of the water.. so will keep them fir testing for now and spares in future i think. my Cara's use the same T33 tweeter and they are not silly cheap.

As i am still getting a strange noise from the firebottle when nothing is playing(was almost like a sneaky fart but now more like a bottle type noise lol) i have taken it out of service til i can get to the bottom of it.
Alan kindly sent me 2 of the 3 valves a while ago which i thought had fixed it but although slightly different is still appearing sometimes. only valve not changed is the pcf80. i did try another pcc189 in a brimar which is a nice valve by way and offers a tad more base i think) it did not remove it. the pcc85 i got is faulty..one channel not working doh! so have another mullard on order nos. also have a pcf80 on order. if that doesnt cure it i will send it to Alan or ali for fettling....its not bad tbh but i know its there if you know what i mean.

So in goes the extremely impressive Schiit Mani ....open and detailed with plenty of everything you want and getting better the more i use it tbh. set on mc at moment and plenty gain and no hum. lovely little thing for the money a!d i could live with it i think. More testing will be needed to come to that conclusion though

Popped the Tannoys onto the dollys this afternoon. They are the right size and apart from ease of moving they are just right height for mini stands. How do they sound? I believe they sound more controlled. maybe the glass ones were reacting resonance wise

Yup, It is a good thought. These things have helped I think , but time will tell. certainly look nice on the dollys. I little something round the bottoms will hide the wheels...I have some acoustic foam that will do the trick I think

They are Geoff....these dollys have deffo made a big difference to the bass or at moment it appears that way..more testingcaccross the spectrum will be needed. the foam is great to work with although delicate in its nature and tears easily.

there was a bad bit on the top of one of the covers i did on the focals that kept catching my eye so i have redid it....fortunately my system of using contact adhesive when set then positioning and heating with an iron means that such repairs are possible without too much faff

Going to give them another run Martin. These stands are much better than the last ones; think the glass, even though it was double thickness may have been causing some resonant effects. Was listening today again and it was fine, so, so far so good.

Ive noticed that David. they can get tinny in mid and boomy in base if restricted. Out in the open they are very good speakers. only reason i was selling mine was due to space being restricted and i have 7 and about to be 8 sets now lol. trouble is i like most of them very much for different reasons.

rescued the driver with. couple of small puctures but savable id think. they were not secured really in anyway except the threads of the screws against the metal hole edge. the other one that is ok at least has 2 nut and bolts thus it never moved. the speaker has had a severe dunt at some time causing the split although a panel nail has appeared through the side so might have been b4. no way of telling. might have been part of original construction.? the way the front baffle has been crudly fitted has in fact contributed. as much as it was so hard up againt top corner that the sides dont want to go back together.
There is one word for this build.....f..ing shoddy! i know thats 2 words but felt it was needed. the wies on both ends are wrapped on not soldered.

I don't know quite what the inside of your speakers is like, but I'd imagine a diagonal batten down the back panel, with a strut between that batten and the front panel (baffle) may be useful. I would not be inclined to use too much damping material with those drivers. Vintage hard paper cone units seem to like working in a rather 'live' environment. Some people use no damping. Obviously you can experiment. Might pay to tinker with port tuning too.

(now waiting for the 'experts' to get stuck in with some overkill methods )

struth
04-07-2015, 16:34
Turns out to be a fault with one of the +ve sockets on the right speaker. Seem to have fixed it. The Nordost black knight interconnects I got from Jason have been put between pre and power instead of the others. Not used flat cable as springy as that before. seems to be very good, clear and neutral cable and an upgrade i think although not managed much listening due to the fault.

walpurgis
04-07-2015, 17:31
Good cable that Nordost Black Knight. It was always 'below the radar' so to speak, so not many people latched onto it. The sound is quite similar to the Flatline copper, which I like, even though it is regarded as old and bottom of the ladder. No screening, so avoid using it near big transformers & mains cables.

I have avoided mains and tx's as much as is possible, but it plugs into the power amp which has 3 tx'x at the back of the amp so its kinda impossible to avaoid totally. As you say its nice cable; like the plugs too:)

coming on. decided to keep it brown but to darken it a bit ...

Sorry for your hassle. In my view - and this is harsh - if you can't pack audio right, to survive WW3 then frankly you should not be selling audio gear.

However you seem to be bringing them back from the dead - well done you. I am not much good with woodworking.

Hope you get them sorted fully.

Been awaiting some materials, but it came today so should be able to make these things look hideous:lol: This plan may well not work at all so don't hold any breath. if it doesnt I will do it in the traditional way.
Also thinking about playing with super tweeters for this, so it could be interesting.........what have I let myself in for:doh:

Very impressive bit of restoration, Grant. The cab look very nice now.

How does a full range Telefunken driver that big work? - very different from the Tannoy DC, approach I guess?
Any frequency curve graphs around?
-- I see info on this ebay auction has them going up to 15KHz before significant rolloff. Impressive for a 10 inch driver - and good enough for my old ears!

not got any graphs Jerry but they are very well thought of in Germany... heres a pair of 8 inchers on sale there ..inc post they cost 400 dollars give or take.

www.ebay.com/itm/pair-Telefunken-20cm-FieldCoil-Fullrange-Speaker-Tel-Bv-686-T12990-Germany-/381322574750

Ive got a spare driver and mine are 10 inch. 3ohm nominal and about 8 watts but that will be enough as i believe they will go plenty loud due to sensitivity.

Those 8" units have field coil magnets, which always command a premium.

They are direct radiators. i.e., just a cone! Simple drivers like these older hard paper coned units can sound very nice.

depending on the high freq response i may pop a tweeter on. . . weather is nice today so hope to get something done. need to go get a sander or plane to take the edges down though. cant find mine anywheres! doh

not surprised. youve got better stock than most manufacturers:lol:

was having a listen to some music and the right speaker was sounding a little rough. thinking oh hell one of the drivers if faulty in the dcs. doh!
but switched the speaker leads around and it followed the amp..not much but i here it. tbink i have a spare pair of those output valves in stock so will let it cool and replace them

struth
15-07-2015, 12:27
it isnt the valves so its the right channel somewhere...need someone to take a look....been here b4 me thinks...bloody valve amps.
put the monos in for now..they dont drive the tannoys as well as the kefs so they may be making a return.

know i shouldnt have said the main system was fettled...

These look interesting. Supertweeter potential. If they are HiVi clones they will be isodynamic units. Graph shows very extended response and sensitivity is useful. They look well made and the price is very reasonable. I've bought from this seller and had good service (and good stuff).

look good Geoff... what do you think for the xover? 10 uf or thereabouts

walpurgis
15-07-2015, 19:40
No, that would bring them in near level by around 2kHz.

0.5uf or 0.22uf will do the job. That's what I use for supertweeters as a rule. I've even gone as small as 0.1uf. All you want is the barest perceptible output at the very top. Due to the 6db/oct roll in, output will continue rising above audibility, which is just what you want.

Even though you will hear next to nothing from the tweeter, when you switch it out of circuit whilst using the main speakers, the effect is immediately apparent.
