No, its the mc25 Geoff. only heard 1 track at fairly low volume so no conclusions made. had to adjust the speed as it dipped slow but as soon as it was set it was bang on.
Seeing as the 160 is dismantled ive given it a giid clean with soap n water and elbow grease.

Lol yes ive been busy. Looking the part the jbe is! It looks tiny in cimparison to the big 160. Gonna take some adjusting too

The JBE is looking very nice.
Those feet look like the Micro Seiki MSB-1 items:
http://i65.tinypic.com/w83xbd.jpg
I had a set. They worked rather well under a few of my TT projects.
Yes thats them. Think they came originally with the deck.. One needs a bit of glue on screw but seem good quality and are very good adjustable isolators.
Honestly Grant I think you're wasting your time with the JBE .........
Oh, did I mention I'm looking for another turntable :eyebrows:

Looks excellent mate . How would you compare this turntable to the Thorens , or is it too early for that question to be answered .
Not a huge difference tbh to me. Slightly different and perhaps more drive with this. Maybe not quite as sweet but has compensations. Not sure which i prefer as i like both but feel safer with this as its as solid as a rock Brian. The speed controller will need done I think but should be fairly straight forward...he says hopefully:eek:
Listening to Frank Sinatra and his voice is different on this deck... Its curious how this can be as the arm and cart are the same.. Shows how different decks alone change things.

Well he aint singin' soprano although he is of Italian extraction:lol: yes speed was right on other records that were easy to tell so its ok. Just an airier presentation.

Ah; looks complicated... I twisted 2 sets of 2 together then the resultant 2 together again. a poor mans braid lol. I never could get the hang of braiding hair over a couple of feet far less 5 metres lol...

Let us know how you get on mate :)
Let us know how you get on mate :)
Will do Brian... Still playing with the new toy at mo! ..... Not being able to see the the strobe effect these days I have to rely on my ears and sense of rhythm for speed setting but the variance seems to have settled for now and its staying where i put it... Its interesting trying to align tone and rhythm to obtain the speed.
As update I seem for now to have got the speed fairly level and constant which has helped in evaluating the deck. I also reset the arm a bit too. still need to have a look see at the innards of the psu when I get a chance though.
The addition of new speaker cables and the painting of non hard hardening glue has also made a difference to the drivers. I also found that turning the was beneficial... worth a try if you are getting a bit of distortion.
Tonight I got the jriver ios app on my new ipad and tried it out; bloody marvellous app it is too.

Seems a shame to put records on it, spoils the look!

Nice colour of vinyl that Jerry.. Deck is working well at moment and looks tge dogs dangly bits too. Spoiled for choice now and both decks give differing presentations. Think the Thorens has it on sound but the jbe is so rock solid that its hard to resist. Think if it keeps behaving its a perm fixture and thorens will be sold if i can bring myself to do it... Perhaps a bit more surface noise with jbe too..
On the speaker front i finally finished painting the other drivers whizzer and outer concertina then turned it about 90 degrees. Its now sounding great.

Decided I think to run a couple of systems via the pc and jriver/ the remote app/ the ipad and some gadgets to what I already have amp/speaker wise. Ive a bluetooth speaker thing coming which will do for casual listening to the radio apps I have plus itunes etc, and am getting a nice looking airplay receiver for the stuff upstairs. it shares at cd quality so should be as good as I need.
Finding this ipad quite engrossing and its got some great features... hey I video called my daughter with it and it aint even a phone; best bit was it cost nowt;)

not a lot of torque on the jbe so adding weight isnt a good idea.. it uses the technics 2000 motor I think
Been getting to know apple products and their needs of late, and experimenting with a bluetooth stereo speaker. The speaker is excellent and its amazing the sound that comes from it for its tiny size. I have been using jriver remote to stream from the upstairs laptop to the ipad and then to the speaker for now and have to say its pretty seamless and stable.(good buy the remote app. I saw Gary .gazjam using it and was intrigued)... lately I have also been using Jriver to make a copy of my flac files in apple lossless(alac) it been a fairly painless job so far although it does take time as Im doing it hands on.(not sure if it can be automated successfully).

I've been putting the Thorens back together with a view to possibly moving it on, although I am in a quandary re that at moment. Still got a couple of things to do with the mains cable inside as it needs bolted back down but otherwise its pretty much mint.
Now the question should I sell it or keep it??? Obviously it will be without the arm and cover but otherwise intact. I also have a Rega 00/250 mount plate for it in silver

Its all a bit messy at mo but I will get that sorted eventually. actually running through the soundbar at present and sounding good

My tachometer finally arrives so set about measuring platter speed
Alas the pod are reflective so managed to attach 3 bits of tape to the black acrylic under them. Reckoned 3 would let me look to get the nice round 100rpm
Alas the adjusting pot is a bit dodgy at that point. Where it's been typically used but managed to get close. It was a tad high at 102/3 so managed to set it stable for now at 100.6 which is close enough. If I get the psu fettled that pots first to get replaced

Why not make a bigger box Grant and run a pair of them in series in each box. They're efficient enough and that'd provide a more amp friendly load.
was thinking just that... would need a big box though... nearly got some last night that would have done.(they were castle conway on legs mk1's I think) I dont have the equip to make cabs from scratch. a flat pack I could put together or I could convert the right boxes....after saying that, in a bit bigger boxes than the ones I made up I think 1 would still be good.... Will see how it goes... no rush for cabs.

They look rather good Grant.
They look rather good Grant.
Yes they are super Alnico drivers.. Ive got 7 now lol. Should be fetching silly money but for some reason are not at moment. think maybe the 3 ohms puts folk off along with the 8 watt rating but both are misnomers when they are in use.
Think I am going to try and do a double driver. not sure if it will work but worth a go. Going to try and design a baffle to take them; might be easier said than done, and no idea how 2 drivers will effect the reflex design. If there is room I might try 2 ports:eyebrows:
walpurgis
18-01-2016, 21:01
Two drivers will be fine in a reflex box with a bit of breathing space. I prefer larger single ports where possible. Small ports can make noise.
They may have to be fairly close on baffle to be manageable but should be able to give them plenty back space.

You could try them in an isobaric setup Grant, that would be interesting.
:)
Funny Alan i had considered that too.. That is one behind the other if anyone is interested. Double the push and half the compliance . wasnt quite sure on phasing in this setup.
Firebottle

Both cones need to move in the same direction so it depends whether one of the drivers is physically reversed.
I used this technique for a sub with some cheap drivers before eventually replacing them with a better single driver. Worked pretty well and definitely lowered the resonant frequency.
You need to make the air volume between the two drivers leak tight.
:)

I suspect that may push the cones into excursions they may not be suited to.
I would hazard a guess that they were designed for use in a sealed enclosure and are short excursion. If you dont have an idea about the enclosure that they came out of nor any way of testing them, it could be terminal for them to guess a port. Having said that and bearing in mind the limited power handling, something like a 70 litre enclosure tuned to between 45 and 50Hz you could try a 4 inch port, by about 3 1/2 inches long. That'd get them into the ballpark. Impossible really to guess the correct closed volume without testing driver Qes and Qms but I'd go as Geoff suggests with an enclosure of around 70 litres. If they work ok, and you want to add a mid and tweeter, I have plenty of really good mids here.
I have a set in a box already that sound very good. its got a rectangular port of similar size to yours, well a bit bigger
. Not sure what the cab litrage is tbh but its about 22" tall. I believe it would have been better in bigger cab but thats all I had.. this time it will be a bit bigger and stronger. If I can get the 2 on a baffle in series I guess I will lose 5 or 6 db; maybe more but they are very efficient anyways. it will make them up to 6 ohm nominal though and double the wattage, I think lol. if not the it will just be one in the box.. going to be queen anne cases redone to be cabs...might not work but will maybe be fun finding out

I'm not sure how you'd work it out Grant. But a doubling of impedance should I believe give you a 3db output cut. But thats for a given driver size. As the cone area would be doubled it gets more complicated. I suspect you'd suffer little noticeable drop in output.
My inclination, would be to have the drivers one above the other in a tallish cabinet with only a small gap between them and closer the top of the box than the bottom. Maybe just leaving room above to squeeze a tweeter (supertweeter?) in for experimentation's sake. I know what the mid is like on older continental full rangers. Usually very good, so a mid driver may not be needed. I guess you'd be looking at boxes a bit over a metre tall.
Yes, something like Duncan did I guess would be the idea, size wise. Will have to see; I might do another set of singles first while I think about it.
Drivers have arrived and look new. Been in a church and must have been sealed I guess. Hard to imagine these are about 60 years old.

Nice one Grant , yes I really did like those speakers . What are the plans for these ones mate ?
Think ive decided to make a slightly bigger version of the ones you heard... Just the one driver in each box....then when funds and the right cabs come along make a double driver set...might need to make it myself so would probably have to get someone to cut the board for me...no way i can handle big sheets now.

Ive got one of these in black' mines in better nick though. still getting good prices it seems. Was considering sellin mine so if anyone fancies a good un let me know and I will give a good price... I have another, a bit shabbier but works fine....I really like nail gramophones, and they go surprisingly loud considering there is no power involved.
Used to sit out in garden with the wife playing with it; wearing a boater of course:eek:
Marco, I though you'd appreciate the green.....or is it light blue ;)
I may be open to selling my Telefunken full range speakers as well as I downsize. marvellous things with high sensitivity, although low power and only 3 ohm, I ve not had any probs driving them with both solid state class d and valves. If anyone local is interested let me know

I am going to take the drivers out when I get a chance and coat the suspension and then turn them as I did with the Rola's. Made a big improvement. Just need some impetus tbh... been a strange time of late, but as you say, these are quite special speakers. A lot of work ent in to them; some of it yours mate...:)

Loved these speakers when I heard them at yours Grant , mid range to die for :) Yes I think that a Bantam Gold or an Amptastic Mini-1 would work very well with these speakers .
I'll have to get over for a listen again :D
Love how unfussy those speakers look. Super clean lines.
Trying not to thread jack but as the Amptastic was mentioned...
Anyone tried the amptastic in Poweramp mode with a Little dot 2 as pre? Im curious as to how it would sound.
Yes Gazjam was running Brians one in Power mode if memory serves... worked very well with his Edingdales.... Good little amps with right speakers

27-01-2016, 08:13
Yes mate , Gary used a little Amptastic Mini-i with his Edingdales for a few months . Sounded pretty good too . :)
I'm pretty certain that these speakers would also be a very good match for the Amptastic or a Bantam Gold .
After getting an iPad pressie I was playing with sound improvements. Got a Bluetooth or wire connecting speaker, an inatek which is quite good. Recently I saw Amazon were selling off Belkins thunderstorm handheld home theatres for the iPad 4 at under £40 so took plunge
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160204/c321ed2b3b2484946ed821471332d1bd.jpg
It has a few settings like movie, music etc.
Also it connects via its lightning connector so an included power pack plug charges the pad up from mains. Has external cv and a app you can use although not sure if Belkins still using and servicing it.

Only update of late apart from bagging a shure m55 cart(its rather good), is I was still finding a slight resonance on one of my Celestion drivers on certain frequencies. so remembering Ali's advice a ery lightly packed the gap between the 2 drivers(between the wizzer and main driver) with teazled cotton wool. hey, it seems to have done the trick....it wasnt much and only on certain freq, but these things are annoying when you know they are there:D

My dad suffers power cuts regularly at his house up here in Fife, it's knackered some gadgets from time to time, none of the cuts are weather related, unbelievable really in the day and age.

Those cabs look interesting. Should be easy enough to adapt.
Duncan made them for his 1/4 wave experiment with his tannoy dc,s... Didnt work but with as you say a bit of a change could be bang on for those teles. Give me 6 ohms and 16 watts and as sensitivity is 100 on a single driver they will still be in mid 90's
walpurgis
13-03-2016, 12:17
I think you'll find the sensitivity of the Telefunkens will remain about the same. In theory having them in series will drop output by 3db, but that does not take into account the doubling of cone area.

Awaiting delivery of the jez arklass head amp so have fitted and set up my mc25fl to save time but left phono to mm ...I know the settings so it should work out ok without testing by changing to mc on mine...if not then i will... Had this cart for a while and tried it with several mc stages inluding a firebottle plus that i owned for some time.
I will give a realistic impression of how it performs in my set up in due course.

I will also try it into the Sony's mm stage as a comparison. Will be a good test as its not as good a stage as my emotiva by any means. The Chinese head amp failed to impress into this although was very decent bar a hum i never got to leave me into the emotiva.
So far its very nice in the emotiva.

Its very good Jez. Nice clear sound. Good soundstage. Good output are plusses... On down side well not too much... Its a tad lean with bass on my system and it was difficult to find a place where some rf was not being picked up.. Better shielding would fix that though i guess. My mm stages may not have suited the cart as well on this system.
It was the best ive heard the mm on the amp sound but my main mc stage for me beats it.. Sure others will disagree though.
Conclusion is if i was a looking for a head amp to turn a mm into a mc and didnt have a good mc i would definately give this serious consideration...well done and maybe the dearer head amp your making will address the hum issue if not the leaness which im happy to accept may be my system or me

Glad you liked it :) I did have issues myself with RF pick up but only from my wifi modem when it was 2' from the head amp ("woodpecker" type interference). As you say the more expensive metal cased version will cure this and it's likely not an issue for most.... unless they also have a wifi modem right next to it!
As far as bass leanness goes well it's -3dB @ 0.7Hz ;)
As an aside I reckon that the ubiquity of wifi has become a real issue as regards RF interference since it's universal adoption....

Shame the Leak tuner got busted by some dimwit who likely wouldn't give a toss. I've received a couple of damaged items in the last year. Each time, I've contacted the seller and sent photos and suggested a part refund or they can have it back and you want all your postage back too. Both times I got a substantial part refund as requested. It's worth a try, they certainly won't want it back after seeing pictures and being asked to repay two lots of postage.

I had an amp and PSU in for some work a month or so ago and the sender merely put the PSU on top of the amp and put them in a cardboard box and sent them... no other packing  It arrived with the box wet and falling apart with only the packing tape holding it all together! How it survived with only a small scratch god only knows. It went back properly packed.
Grim, I'd be requesting refund from seller on eBay.
Funnily enough Parcelforce managed to damage my Claymore 2 last week too.
I think they do it on purpose with anything they think is fragile.
A few sackings wouldn't go amiss.

Also had my watches out for an airing. Again. Lovely things but think I need to sell them soon alas

I reckon I could reproduce that Grant.
Probably got a suitable bit of steel plate somewhere, or brass maybe. I'll need the dimensions or even better, the broken one to work from, including the broken off bit if you have it. Best check the tuner actually works first though. :)
Not found the broken bit yet. Gonna keep looking the other one could be used as a templat i guess.. Thanks. I will get it tested in near future.
Had the system up and running properly this afternoon, playing some jazz... have to say it was sounding rather good to me anyways... and I guess thats the main thing. I was having, again a little trouble with the same recording that I always seem to get.. some low level distortion, with The Nostalgia album. I re ripped it and its sounding much better(must be the placebo effect ;) ) ... I even tidied the cables a bit at the back....not that most would notice
Changed 2 cables for now thanks to Brian's stash of such things. Soundi!g even better now and tidier too as they were much shorter. Also noticed the switchbox was emitting a bit of something tickly when the rca's from amp were not connected. Must be coming from cd or tt. Probably cd... So ive made up an extra earth link for linking both together permenently as a backup. I had this ince b4 with one of these dvd players. Anyways its safe now.
Just goes to show you should check these things...wasnt dangerous as suc h but unwanted in extreme..
Happy days may be returning.

Having had Marco and Snapper up and a sesh, and another 2 of late myself, I think I am going to stick with what I have, bar the odd cable( I know Ive kinda said that before lol) on the main system. I dont see how I can better it on my budget. Ive still got a new set of speakers to make, but doubt they will change much. The ProArt amp is good enough for me I think.
Speaker cable seems sorted too as it equalled some top stuff, again for my system. RPI, is, for a streamer, as good as I need too. cd's through the buffer as good to, and the TT finally sounds damned good now, with the shure and the cable change.

I really enjoyed listening to your system, Grant. It's very musical sounding and communicative, and not lacking in any major areas. Loved the Telefunkens! Now *those* are what I'd call speakers that are properly voiced to play music, as opposed to reproducing 'hi-fi pyrotechnics' for geeky-arsed audiophiles... They don't make 'em like they used to ;)
I was very impressed with your JBE turntable. The combination of the SME 3009 and Shure M55E is spot on, and marries very well with your phono stage. If I were you, I'd leave well alone, as it just 'works'! :)
Whilst I enjoyed the steaming side of your set up, I did feel that your T/T was considerably ahead of it sonically and musically, but in my experience that's what happens when you've got a well-sorted vinyl set-up. Therefore, if you were going to effect any upgrades to your system, then that's the area I'd be concentrating on.
Oh, and at some point I think you owe it to yourself to try a nice little valve amp with those Telefunkens, perhaps something EL84-based, as I think that would work superbly well, and after all, glowing bottles are what the Teles would've been designed to be used with!
Anyway, enjoy yer choons , mate - you've got a nice little system there

Alternatively, a little Monarchy Audio SM-70 would be rather nice. They thrive with full range drivers. The SM-70 is about as lucid as it gets. No valve amp I've used has been any more musical.
Sure, Geoff. It was just if Grant fancied a change and wanted to try some thermionic action... ;)

It sounds extremely good. What a bargain it was if I can use it for other tasks too. Will be able to watch stuff when out without my phone packing up as well

Anyway, enjoy yer choons , mate - you've got a nice little system there
Marco.
Missed this post somehow. Lol.
Anyways, yes i,d agree... The streaming has gone downhill since just after i installed moode 2.5
Couldnt put my finger on anything but it just didnt sound right. Then a few days ago the linear psu packed in... Ive since got a very big battery pack and well waoh, it is sounding more like itself...maybe even better.
So, i am thinking the linear has had something wrong for some time and finally packed in... Didnt last long. Bassas lol
Anyway even though i didnt actually get the battery for the rpi it is gonna get used for it i think... It was cheap enough that i can get another for travel if needed.best 20 quid ive spent actually..
Anyhoo, ive been tidying a bit so took a few pics as was in ra mood...
Made enough room for a chromecast2 and the psu for tt is now on same table.. Battery pack too i there and can run both chromecast and rpi as it has a 2a and a 1a usb socket. Holds 20000mAh so lasts for quite some time. I also have a smps connection for both if im not being anal lol

How's it sounding Grant, Is the MC25FL getting an airing soon?
Sticking with the pro amp then Grant? (I still can't decide between my Quads and the Crowns?) What happened to the Sony?

All sounding rather good Geoff. Just little tweaks now i think thather than surgery. Just took the ortofon off a few weeks ago and have to say that as odd as it may sound, I prefer the shure. Might just be a mood thing but it seems to like this deck. The ortofon sounded much more at home on the Thorens.

Certainly with these speakers i like the monoblock proart in stereo mode. They dont need the current the Sony produces. So its sat upstairs feeling unloved lol

Can't say this about many cable plugs, but those are pretty!
Been testing the Leak duo that came to me in bits a few months ago. Apart from crackly pots and a bulb out(stereo) they seem to work well.. sound very good actually considering the crappy speakers. Will service them and try and rebuilt the cabs etc.

This Tonbux battery pack is rather good, and along with the switch is very handy. Has a decent capacity and can be charged with 2 psu's at same time. Lovely leather styled case with gold trim as well.

These have arrived and been installed. Nice sellwr and quick delivery. They are well made and have solid switches. Not cheap crap either... Working nicely for charging batteries as i can leave them connected when system is on without charging battery if not needed. Just what i needed
Had a cd player connected to the leak amp(2200) today. It sounded very good. The amp needs some work on it after opening and testing... Main Electrolytics in psu are in bad need of replacing. 1 swollen and other leaking. dunno what they are are moment but added to list. All the buttons and pots need removing and cleaning too.
A big thanks to Firebottle(alan) for the bulb that arrived today as well. cheers, and will get that tried in near future too
Sometimes it's interesting going back to a CD player after months (or longer) of your ears being attuned to the sound of streaming... There are definitely differences in the presentation, and IMO it's mainly down to the PSU, if the CD player in question has a nice big, well-implemented one, of the linear variety ;)
Marco.
I have just come to conclusion that these battery power banks sound different. Markedly at that.... They are different makes but have very similar specs...size and output etc...i wonder if it has something to do with their protection circuits...
The other battery switches came and have been fitted. This allows the disconnecting of battery to unit without unplugging. Very handy as getting to them, and pulling plugs is a bit awkward when mobility is a problem. Now I can use and charge via short switches which gives me best of both worlds.

Was not intending updating this so soon but plans oot windae

Aye, weather was ok so did a few things mate... Caps are 6800uf 40volt jobs... dated at 1974 so 42 years young. one is leaking slightly, and other looks to be not far behind.. Any ideas on best replacements? I saw some vishey ones that looked similar size... about 35mm dia. or thereabouts.
Might add it sounds quite good considering where it is at. may well be a nice amp

For replacement caps these sound pretty good, you will need to remove the screw thread on the base.

Quad 21 L i think Geoff. not a bad speaker the mk1's. they did something to the mk2's that spoilt the presentation somewhat .... Yes the SRM is a nice deck, and seriously underrated tbh... Mike Greenwood has it still I think.

You've changed about a bit since mate. I'm still using largely what I had five years ago. Don't see any need to change much. I'd need a lot of convincing that anything would be a major improvement. (mind you I do have an awful lot of gear to play about with and make 'better' permutations)

I did have a spell of change didnt I :D still, all in I think what I have now, having tried and heard many things, and plenty of other folks systems, I am probably more than sure where Ive ended up is right sound wise. It is also handy I cant afford to do it again lol.
Gonna try to make one last pair of speakers; just for the hell of it, and fix up the leak stuff to working condition, as a vintage set, just for fun, and the fact that is looks great as well. Speakers may turn out to be not worth it but I want to find out and do ONE LAST SET ;)

As I said elsewhere I finally got round to inspecting the Chinese double psu.
Turned out to be a poor joint on switch so after repairing I added an earth wire to iec socket and reset the voltages. It's now running nicely although not back in system as of yet. I may well stay with the batteries for time being

Hi Grant
I hope your not using that ps to power the Pi2/Pi3 and Dac, just look at the VA rating of the transformers.
Marginal with no headroom :)
Manufacturer says 5v 2.5amp
Not had any problems with it bar the dodgy connection
tubehunter
14-05-2016, 10:06
I dare say you could draw 2.5a but you are going to get heat issues etc...
7.5va divided by 7.5v = 1a X 2 windings = 2a at best
My hdd is self powered so guess i might not draw 2.5.. I ran it with a 1.8 amp smps for a while without issues Duncan. Not actually tested it though.. It doesnt get overly hot although i dont leave it one as a rule..i have done so by accident and it was not silly hot although warm. Fairly mute now as i intend running itvoff the battery.. It just sounds righter if thats a word. I admit i was surprised it didnt have an earth wire though.
Being a lovely day and having too many CDs I recycled an old scrappy unit into a smaller neater scrappy unit for living room. Lol.
