I was so pleased to find this Shosty - I had never even heard of the recording.
But sadly I have to agree with the reviewer who has posted ...
"Whatever his prowess in 19th- and 20th-century Romantic music of Eastern European origin, Kertész simply does not connect with Shostakovich’s frenetic, highly strung idiom. He emphasizes the symphony’s classical structure, employing crisp phrasing and rendering the music with a strangely chilly detachment."
And the sq is rather mushy and unfocussed. Ah well, it does have its points of interest.

Ahhh, that's more like it - lovely music previously unknown to me - I was particularly impressed with the Borodin piano quintet.

--- absolutely phenomenal playing - probably the very best Liszt sonata I have heard. Jaw dropping.
But in stereo the sound is 'atmospheric' rather than focussed - I listened in Mono.

Not sure what you mean about mono though in the Houston

The Houstoun (note the 2nd u) recording stretches the piano all the way from the left to the right speaker and is very unfocussed and 'billowy' in stereo. I guess some folks will like it but I find it very distracting.
In mono you get a nicely focussed and precise central image which works well, for me, with piano.
Does that make any more sense?

All amps should have a mono switch
not heard the recording but there can be too much stereo sometimes

OK, I think I get it - you played a stereo record in mono? I guess that was, as David says, via a mono switch on the amp. Another option I suppose it to mute one channel and now you would be listening from the position of the unmuted microphone. Having listed to a piano recital recently I was impressed the way the sound filled the room - so I am rather surprised that listening in mono could be an improvement.
Incidentally although he is a kiwi I have not heard him play live.

Ah sorry - yes, mono button on pre-amp. I was still being obscure!
Yep, Michael Houstoun, he's a Kiwi - Check Him Out ! - superb Beethoven sonata recordings as well. But with the same blown-up wishy washy sound quality - maybe that's what you guys like Down Under?
I hear quite a few recordings - and in my estimation Houstoun is one of the great pianists of our time.
Check out his Shostakovich piano concertos on Naxos as well - that CD was my intro to him and set me investigating other recordings by him. I've been in search of a great recording of the Shosty piano concertos and have tried pretty much all of the 'usual suspects' - some of them very good, but not quite nailing the exquisite slow movements - then for 1p plus postage from Amazon I thought I may as well try the Naxos offering even if the pianist is not a Big Name; Houstoun ... who? F**k me, it's near as damn perfect! Forget the rest, Houstoun's the best! :D

I picked the next CD up at a charity shop for 50p.
Just one of those naff cheapo labels with pseudonymous orchestra and conductor names, I thought.
But, well -- 50p -- charity -- why not? - who knows what it's like?!
http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/ba06a4cc532b8acc876f98906a70f3db/2629144.jpg
Well, blow me down. It is very, very good indeed.
Different performers for each symphony. And you can hear that from both sq and interpretation.
#40 - a measured tread, but superbly held together rhythmically. Somewhat warm sonics with good clarity and wide stereo spread.
#41 - faster, quite incisive. Slight disappointment in that there is no repeat in the fugue finale, it would have been welcomed! Slightly lean recording, but that suits the interpretation. Narrower stereo spread.
I've played this CD 3 times now - You know, I think these may well be my favoured versions of these symphonies!
I've never worked out how to upload pictures of the cover art, so here's the information on what I'm listening to as I type:
Georg Philipp Telleman: Quadros and Trios
Ensemble Senario (recorded in Utrecht June 1998)
Globe GLO 5154
on CD
Fairly recent charity shop acquisition - well recorded, and you can get a real feel for the acoustic in the church where they recorded.

Heifetz is technically sizzling, even in his early 70s, especially the Ravel Tzigane . Astonishing, really. But his playing still sounds robotic to me, emotionless. Others hear it differently, though.

No, not done the HoW thing yet, Marco - my wife is recovering from taking the quick way down a short flight of steps  so can't really hack it round town yet and she'll want to look at the book shops.

Sorry to hear that Jerry. Hope the missus is OK quickly.
No worries, Graeme - I know of lots of interesting pianists!
I find I have the same problem with Clifford Curzon - 'just the notes' doesn't do it for me - can you imagine Beethoven giving an emotionless performance of his own music? ... :nono: :)
Not sure I would agree with you regarding Curzon. He was often criticised for not "just playing the notes". Anyway, just listen to his playing of the Grieg piano concerto on Decca - it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand!

Ah, fair enough, Barry - I guess I'm really going on Curzon's later recordings when he seemed to be ultra-careful.
I have since come across some of his earlier efforts and they are indeed very eventful and (to me) much more enjoyable.

Yep, Selections is a bargain hunter's paradise - I've used them for a decade or two!
They also sell on Amazon under various nom de plumes - sometimes even cheaper than on their main site, especially if you want just a single CD, as the Amazon postage rate is less! It's always worth checking for titles in Amazon Market Place. ;)

This is rather excellent :)
Marco.
Emperor was the only classical music in the house as I grew up - a tape of of DG recording. I want to say Karajan but really it's so long ago it would be pure guesswork.
Listening now to Tasmin Little's Chandos recording of Britten's Violin Concerto with Ed Gardner. Wonderful piece which remains under-rated and under-exposed in my view,

Hey, excellent, Keith!
Give them a spin and see what you think.
the Bach disc looks a great introduction to his music. A very varied selection!
The Beethoven set conducted by Kletzki - an old set of recordings but he was a very fine conductor - I just hope they are in decent condition!
Start with the 5th symphony - I think everyone would recognise the beginning of that!

I'm sure it's just me, as Schiff is a world famous pianist, but I find his playing very generic -- whether it's Bach or Beethoven or Schubert or Mozart, it all sounds the same to me! I hear Schiff not the composer. :mental:
Yes, I've heard some of the Mozart / Vegh series .....

Kuerti's Schubert sonatas are world class, imo, but while his Beethoven is good it doesn't quite make it up there with the best.

Ah - now we are cooking with charcoal!
The Op 101 (#28) in Lill's hands is superb.
Oddly, and despite the better known and more illustrious competition from legendary pianists past and present, if I had to pick just one Beethoven piano sonata cycle to take to my desert island I think it would be Lill on ASV.
He has a leonine power and majesty that bowls me over every time - it's how I imagine Beethoven himself would have played them.

A much underrated composer, imo.
Just popped into one of the charity shops in Wrexham and obtained the following, all on minty-mint vinyl [50p each]:
Brahms - Symphony No1, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Rudolf Kempe, on EMI records, from 1959.
Handel/Vivaldi/Gluck - Pachelbel Canon, with The Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Christopher Hogwood, on Decca Records ‘Editions De L’Oiseau-Lyre', from 1981.
Mozart - Symphony No 32/35 and 39, by the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, on ASV Digital Records, from 1985.
Debussy - Nikita Magaloff ‘Piano Works’, on Concert Hall Records, from 1969.
Vaughan Williams - Dona Nobis Pacem 'Toward the Unknown Region’, with Sheila Armstrong (soprano), John Carol Case (baritone) and the London Philharmonic Choir/Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, on EMI ‘His Masters Voice’ Records, from 1973.
Bohuslav Martinů - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra/Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, with Bruno Belcik (violin), Josef Palenicek (piano) and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vaclav Neumann and Karel Ancerl, on Supraphon Records, from 1962.
Martinů - Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra. Strauss - Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra, with Frantisek Hantak (oboe) and the BRNO State Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Martin Turnovsky and Jaroskav Vogel, on Supraphon Records, from 1963.
Tchaikovsky - Sextet ‘Souvenir de Florence’, with Mikhail Kopelman (violin), Andrei Arbamenkov (violin), Dmirti Shebalin (viola), Yuri Bashmet (viola), Valentin Berlinsky (cello) and Nalalia Gutman (piano), on Melodya Records, from 1980.
And lastly, ‘An Anthology of Elizabethan Keyboard Musick’, played by Michael Thomas on the claviorganum, positive organ, chamber organ, double manual harpsichord, single manual harpsichord and clavichord, on Saga Records, from 1966.
Off to clean them now, and then have a listen! Any gems in here, Jerry, or are they just a load of old tat? :D
Marco.
P.S oh, and a CD of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No1/Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, with Kyung Wha-Chung (violin), and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Rudolf Kempe, on Decca, from 1999 [original recording from 1972]: an ‘ADD’ analogue-to-digital remaster, for £1.00.

The 48 violas of: Academy of St Martin in the Fields, The London Philharmonic and Orchestra of the English National Opera.
An interesting mix of tracks:
Gershwin - 'It Ain’t Necessarily So' from Porgy and Bess
Weill – Kiddush
Shostakovich – Galop from Cherymushki
Dvořák – Slavonic Dance in E minor
Granger – Arrival Platform Humlet
Ravel – Pavane pour une infante défunte
Prokofiev - Waltz from War and Peace
Bacharach - 'This Guy’s In Love With You'
Strayhorn – 'Take the “A” Train'
This sort of thing is probably frowned upon by this august forum, but is pleasant nonetheless. Anyway it was a charity shop acquisition so very inexpensive.

Normally I don't like spoken words, eg Beethoven's ninth. Also, if I remember correctly, Stravinsky acknowledged the dialogue in Oedipus was a mistake. In my opinion the music should do the talking. But the War Requiem is a different beast. The poems stand up in their own right and Britten's tones and rhythm enhance the tension. So the way I see it is that it is music, then poetry, then music etc. Still I can see why you needed relief :->

[QUOTE=jandl100;626309]Ah - Deyanova - she recorded a most interesting set of Schubert piano sonatas for Nimbus - clearly (to my ear) emulating the legendary recordings of Sviatoslav Richter - they almost worked! Certainly worth a listen.

Giacomo Puccini: La Boheme
The Sir Thomas Beecham, Victoria de los Angeles version from the 1950's
2 CDs on EMI Classics.
My wife's choice, but I have to agree that this is a great version. The sleeve notes say that Beecham actually met Puccini and did not really like him. He seems to like the music well enough.
On another note, Puccini's old car still exists, and we saw it finish the London to Brighton run a couple of years back, though it did have to get a push over the finish line. I don't remember seeing it on last years run! Maybe it was there, but the weather was so wet last year that we had to take regular refreshment breaks in a bar to get dry :-)

Extremely beautiful Bach transcriptions by Wilhelm Kempff, played by his star pupil Idil Biret. There is a gentle luminosity here, and throughout much of the disc, which is entrancing.
Kempff's own compositions (a suite and a piano sonata) are good - the Italian suite seems very much influenced by the 20thC French manner to me! - think Ravel, Debussy in their gentler moods.
The sonata is a bit more percussive, but still tuneful.
A lovely CD for chilling out to.

Its unlike any RVW I have heard before unfortunately the sound quality isnt the best I think they sound great all from radio braodcasts recorded 1988-9 ADD
They really are good performances deffienately sound like they must of had a reasonalbe amount of rehearsal or not the first time they have performed them Sometimes the tempos seem a bit odd but that might just be because its just different a real refreshing change from the other RVW CDs I have
I thought I might be taking a bit of a gamble buying this set but I am a big Rozhdestvensky fan and am so glad I did

No problem, but the values of a lot of the early classical records seem to have reached such crazy levels in recent years that you may have to sell all your hifi to afford it.
Fortunately there are still bargains to be found. Take the two L'Arlesienne suites above. Cluytens conducting the PCO on the full price SAX label now sells for silly money whereas Wallberg conducting the Philharmonia (IMHO the best orchestra of the late 50's to mid sixties) released in the UK of the bargain label series (only full price in Italy AFAIK) can be found for a few pounds. Both are excellent recordings by the way.
The Guardian did a good obit on Wallberg and his MSND they mention can still be found for a few pounds

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in c minor Op. 67
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Furtwangler
EMI CDC 7 47120 2
Classic mono recording from the 1950's
Furtwangler and Beethoven what's not to like?
Not spinning but streaming!
More Furtwangler with the Vienna Philharmonic - this time the Schubert Symphony No. 8 the "Unfinished" so only two movements. Sounding pretty good via FLAC files, not bad for an old mono recording from January 1950...
Files are loaded on a Synology NAS drive, and streaming over wifi to my Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6, if anyone is interested.

Totally baffling!
I'm very careful to use the stock images of the actual LP I have, and I suspect that others here are, too - for the life of me I cannot see a problem with that. It will look almost identical!
And I often am playing recent purchases and all records are from my own collection, and I often provide brief comments on them, thus seemingly fulfilling your other requirements. You only have to express an interest (as some have done) and I am sure I would be happy to expand my prose. ;)
Or am I missing something?
There seems to be a total disconnect here.

That misplaced insert appears to be the Wellington Town Hall. Built in the early eighties it includes a wonderful auditorium for symphony concerts. Not only that, but you can feel safe at it is built on 'seismic plates'. At an underground level the steel base rests on steel foundations. The idea is that in an earthquake it will rock a lot but there is nothing to snap.

My interest is more in the recordings than someone declaring that they are playing them today and I much prefer to see a pic of the actual record someone has because, particuarly with classical music, there are often quite a number of versions of the same recording and also differences in sleeves. So I decided to stop posting on the spinning today thread. Quite why do you have a problem with that I don't know but in future I'll post on classical recordings elsewhere.
I don't have a problem with it at all, Andy. You do whatever you like. However, up until your last post I couldn't quite understand why you no longer wished to post on this thread.
Now that you've provided a proper explanation, I do. It makes perfect sense now. Essentially, it's about being clear, rather than somewhat vague (as you were when you first announced your intentions)... ;)
Anyway, not to worry!

Gymnopédie No. 1 (4 variations) and Gnossienne Nos. 1 – 5.
No doubt the purists will turn their noses up at this – well that’s their problem!

Mikael Helasvuo - flute, with the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, cond. Jukka-Pekka Saraste.
BIS CD 268 (1984 and 1986)
These two 18th-century composers are new to me, but I’m always interested in something new and I’m a bit of a sucker for flute concertos. Very enjoyable.
Vivaldi – ‘6 Bassoon Concertos’
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/91mlJaMRLEL._SX355_.jpg
Klaus Thunemann - bassoon, with I Musici
Concertos for bassoon, strings and continuo:

Concerto in A minor, RY 497
Concerto in C, RY 473
Concerto in G, RV 492
Philips 416 355-2 (1985)
Again new to me; some of concertos remind me of the works of Michael Nyman that would accompany the films of Peter Greenway. Again very enjoyable.

The Glazunov VC is a bore from beginning to end as far as I am concerned, the music not the interpretation.
According to the CD booklet notes, Stokowski was quite taken with the young Rumanian violinist, Silvia Marcovici ....
