Malcolm Arnold - concertos for clarinet, harmonica and guitar.
-- the first two are good, the geetar concerto I can manage without hearing again, I think.
The idea of an harmonica concerto sounds a bit strange, but this is powerful stuff!

All listened to on headphones via portable minidisc player while sloshing on wood preservative to one end of my wood-clad dwelling. :)

As so often with the 7th, it sounds de-Shostied to me. Too romanticised, some of the bite is removed. There's no heartstopping terror in the implacable advance of the Nazi war machine, just pretty la-de-da in that part of the 1st mvt for the most part. Mantovani and his 101 Syrupy Strings.
-- as above, some folks really rate this recording, though, so YMMV, as ever. :D

There are so many 7ths these days! ... but of those I have heard, despite 2nd rate orchestra and somewhat edgy sound, the Nanut remains the performance of choice for me. I can feel the dread and the terror of being trapped in a city in the path of the 3rd Reich's war machine.

But as with his Sibelius recordings, for me Vanska manages to extract the essence of the composer from the performance. It all sounds pointless and uninvolving to me, an academic exercise not a musical one.
Give me Bohm, Karajan, Wand, Tintner etc, anytime. They've got the Bruckner mojo in spades. :)

My boot sale purchases are now flat after a few hours in the sun between glass. So the first on the TT was Karajan and the Berlin Phil and Beethoven's 5th.

I like Karajan. There are times when some of the subtleties seem to vanish into the mix a bit but he, never the less, seems to find the heart and soul of the music. I love his versions of Ravel and Shostakovic jazz inspired pieces and of course, the Blue Danube (2001 has etched his version into my brain - what's left of it) So I sat and listened the the 5th. I reckon he got the closest yet but it still failed to hold my attention enough to stop me reading my book at the same time. If it was Bach, Vivaldi, Handel or Jazz, I couldn't do anything else but listen.

I guess I have to just admit that classical or romantic music just doesn't do it for me. I find no direction or purpose to the music and it becomes wall paper. There are a few exceptions to every rule but Beethoven just evades me as does Mozart which is a blow as the other LP I got this morning was the Requiem. I'll see if that fares any better tomorrow. I bought them both as, if anyone was going to convert me, I thought it might be Karajan.

The stall that I got the LPs from also had some Vivaldi on DG but the guitarist was Yepes so my interest was immediately extinguished. How a professional can make the guitar sound so boring I just don't know.

-- very 'modern' classical - i.e. a bit dissonant and a bit weird - but still quite tuneful and certainly interesting.
Hmm - I'll be investigating some more Kalevi Aho, I think. :)

This is great Bach playing, imo - pacing is just right, no silly phrasing distortions, delicate as well as wonderfully magisterial when required.
I've listened to several volumes in the cycle now and they are all good.

Interesting. I've not heard Szell's cycle before. Precision playing by the Clevelanders. Interpretively cool, definitely not for Bernstein fans who prefer their Brahms on the lush and romantic side! I enjoyed both symphonies. Decent recording.

Not at all familiar with Nielsen (apart from his 5th), so when I saw this in a charity shop for 99p, it was a no-brainer purchase. Will need a couple more listens, but so far I have found it largely 'average': it didn't do much for me. :(

Hmm. I keep trying, but most of his music doesn't do much for me.

Penderecki is a strange composer for me.
Much of his music can be just random noise as far as I am concerned, but now and then I come across a really great piece.
A few days ago I stumbled on his String Trio and was bowled over.
Today it's his piano concerto.

I love piano music and in my opinion Grieg's Concerto is one of the best.
I never get sick of hearing the opening strident bars.
Listening to it on my CD player, through my amp [both in my signature] and recording it onto a TDK tape for my mother.
For the recording I am using the Akai Gixmio.

Dipped into a couple of recent digital recordings of Schubert's Death and The Maiden Quartet (including the Pavel Haas) but reverted to the 1971 John Boyden recording of the Gabrielis on CFP vinyl. Masterly, with a narrow - and hence realistic - soundstage. Wonderful!

Beethoven 9th symphony, Cluytens, Berlin philharmonic... LP .. Quite slow but wonderfully powerful and rhythmic first movement , fast and exciting 2nd, smoothly flowing slow mvt, quite a frisky finale. I really enjoyed this.

Beethoven 6th symphony, Karajan 1977, Berlin philharmonic.... LP... This has fairly poor reputation as a performance but I think it is excellent, quite fast but very exciting!

Wagner - Organ Fireworks - Hansjörg Albrecht

Surround sound SACD. You can surely imagine how this could be quite tasteless, but Albrecht is remarkably restrained in these Wagner lollipop transcriptions. The Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde being marvellously ethereal.

Volta's sound quality is A1 Excellent (as is Barto, imo) - you can seemingly hear every detail, in a slightly reverberant space.
The instrument itself sounds rather more fragile than those typically used by Barto in his recordings; Barto's lutes always sound solid and forthright, Volta's sounds a bit frayed in comparison! Interestingly frayed, though. :)

I would guess the difference in sound is Barto's enormous Baroque lute as opposed to Volta's smaller Renaissance lute. I could be wrong, of course...a lot of it could just be the ambience of the recording space, right hand technique, etc.

-- LP -- a bit of a curiosity. Quite a small scale performance of this mighty work - sounds more like a chamber ensemble - less impact but you can really hear what is going on in the orchestration, more than I ever realised!

I think this is why I tend to like small scale works. Somehow, with a huge orchestra, the sound becomes overwhelming and the details lost. Perhaps this is where the greatest conductors can shine.

Small scale works best on my favourite genre anyway. Things like The Water Music with only one instrument per part, really show you what is going on.

I have found the same with both live and recorded work so it's not just a hi-fi thing.

Yes, it's fascinating to hear Ansermet's 9th, so much going on in the different musical parts that (not being a score reader) I hadn't realised before!
But I wouldn't want to be without large scale performances that raise the roof and sweep the listener away! :)
Based on recent listening, if I had to restrain myself to two 9ths they would probably be Ansermet and Abbado.

Agh......score reading!!! As we have just got a piano, trying to remember all those lessons from my childhood is straining the old brain. I used to be able to sight read and happily follow a score. Now it's all just a jumble of notes again. Back to scales and slomo for a while:(

I find his stereo works cold, aloof, emotionless, bored.
But this Elgar from 1941 is just brimming with emotion and obvious affection for the work. Stunning. Not a bad recording, either, mine is on LP -- also available remastered on Naxos.

I don't know why it is, but for the last 45 years I have been under the misapprehension that Ansermet and his Suisse Romande Orchestra were 2nd or 3rd rate and I have ignored them accordingly.
Bloody hell, how wrong I was!
A week or so back I was blown away by their Beethoven 9th symphony, last night the same happened with the 4th.

-- after learning the piece from Andrew Penny's Naxos recording this is a bit of a revelation.
It doesn't have the raw energy of Penny, but has a romantic sweep and passion that he rather misses.
Takes the works from excellent 2nd tier to very definitely knocking on the door of greatness. :)
The recording quality, too, is very different. The Naxos coolly transparent and incisive, compared to the luxuriant glow and huge surging power of the Chandos.
I look forward to exploring the rest of Hickox's cycle.

Gli Orazi e I Curiazi by Domenico Curazi. Fairly unknown opera from the end of the 18th Century. Performed by the orchestra sinfonica e coro della RAI de Milano conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini. Recorded in Milan in April 1952. Sounds a little thin, as you might expect of such a historic performance, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Love this one. I have to say I enjoy the finale, and a persuasive quartet like this one helps. I like the Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt from the 60s as well with the famous Sutherland-Horne-King-Talvela lineup.

To my surprise, it was the Jando I stayed with.
He has a lightness of touch and a carefree sense of impetuous power that makes the music the fun I think it should be, and that seems to elude the others to a greater or lesser extent.

I really like this. Although Venzago's Bruckner gets thrashed in reviews! :lol:
OK - he does do little tempo tweakeroos which seem to irritate some folk. And he is light and vigorous, which goes against the heavy portentous massiveness of the Bruckner tradition. But I find it a bracing alternative to Karajan and Jochum etc. I'm happy to have both approaches available. :)

Ah, Bruno Walter - a wonderful conductor. His stereo Bruckner 9th with the Columbia SO is one of the best ever recorded, imo.

The only one I own is by Karl Richter, so I would have to say that's my favorite. However, I have a Lionel Rogg cd on the way where he performs that piece, and I like his playing quite a lot, so who knows? Could be Rogg, could be Richter. I'm in the very early stages of this project, and so far my favorite organists for Bach are Richter, Rogg, Kevin Bowyer, and Marie-Claire Alain (not necessarily in order of preference).

I heard one movement from Batiz's Sheherazade on a sampler CD and was impressed. Even more impressed by all of it! Mackerras on Telarc had previously been my fave, and it is a bit better recorded than the Naxos, but I suspect the Batiz trumps it as a performance.

This set has my favorite Toccata & Fugue in D Minor BWV 565; IMO one of the most over-recorded pieces of music, but I still like it. I would love to hear Walcha do something more sedate (like the Trio Sonata no. 1), and perhaps there is something like that on this set, but I haven't run into it yet. Though a few of the pieces do tend that way; perhaps Walcha is just not a sedate player.

Actually, the situation is a bit more complicated than that for me.

Spotify's music catalogue is a lot bigger than Tidal's, but I am coming across music I want that is on Tidal but not on Spotify! :doh:

So I may well keep a lower rez (same as Spot Premium's) subscription to Tidal and see if they can sort themselves out.

... I have also learned that Tidal is now owned by JayZ :rolleyes: ... which does not endear them to me. Silly of me, but there you go.

Probably my favourite version of SS3. I am an admirer of Fremaux's conducting; straight forward and disciplined, but lets the emotional strength of the music through as well.
Played on LP, then repeated the finale on Spotify Premium.

I have to confess that I usually find Giulini's interpretations to be slow and ponderous to the point of tedium, if not lacking in grandeur when appropriate.
But his approach certainly pays dividends here. And he is almost frisky in the scherzo!
But overall, monumental might be my 1-word-review.

I am a fan of the Montreal Symphony / Charles Dutoit recording of the Organ Symphony - the sound is one of Decca's best and it is a compelling performance. The organ is a physical as you could wish. I bet that Fremaux is pretty tasty though so I shall give it a whirl on Spotify. :D

Harbach is a superb harpsichord player and searching for more of her performances on Amazon a couple of years ago I came across some of her own compositions.
Really nice - OK, so they aren't Mahler 3 or Bruckner 8, or even Shostakovich 10. But for middle-to-light weight, well crafted music with some nice melodies and always interesting textures they are a very pleasant listen. Excellent sq, too. :thumbsup:

A lovely album. The opening quintet is quite magical.
The concluding sextet is just too busy-busy for me, but then most sextets strike me that way.

An amazingly diverse album - orchestral overture to top & tail the album. Mass with choir and vocal soloists. A couple of short pieces for violin and piano. All of it good! :)
