A nice charity shop vinyl find from a while back that I've only just got round to cleaning and playing.
I'd never heard Vaughan Williams' Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra in F minor before - and very enjoyable it is too; light and playful, but the stand-out is Zukerman's Lark Ascending which is fabulous and is now my favourite version of this piece. Now listening to the Oboe concerto, which is also excellent. 99p well spent :cool:

Attached to this months issue of the BBC Music magazine.
Like Beethoven's Ninth - I'm looking for the definative version of the Shostakovich 5. Sadly this is not it - I find it to be a relatively pedestrian reading: so much so, I prefer Bergland's EMI recording.
You could do much worse than Previn and the LSO, Barry. If you can find a copy, that is.

I'm not always persuaded by Perahia (e.g. his Mozart) but this hits all the right buttons for me. :)
Of course, having members of the Amadeus Quartet to hand does not hurt at all.

I had some of his CDs already, including this one - I think I gushed a bit and encouraged him to write a violin concerto! :lol:

Interesting, this. Performed with a computerised "virtual orchestra".
Fairly laid back music, for the most part, but tuneful and enjoyable.

Also good. The 'brass quintet concerto' is lively and fun, the violin suite is quiet and memorably tuneful and fluid. The other pieces are good, too, melodious rather than tempestuous on the whole.

I have the UK pressing dated 1975. It was one of my favourite recordings musically although, strangely, Bream is not my favourite guitarist for Baroque music (thats Brabec) However, I have yet to manage to clean it properly after the damn Discostat left residue all over the LP. Even after I rinsed it off afterwards. Pretty annoyed.

I picked this up from the tip this morning a long with a load of other classical LP's and a few others just chucked in a skip ready for land fill there no consideration for what the LP's are to collectors so i dig them a a full bag full and more and just went on my merry way. The problem is i DON'T see the point of chucking perfectly good records away but i cannot being to imagine the stuff i have missed due to the inconsideration of IDIOTS oh its a skip i will just put it in there :spank:.

Actually, thats not true any more as he came out here for the first time a little while ago and the sound of the records astonished him. He had only heard CDs since they came out - he dumped all his LPs at once. Told me afterwards - cheers.
He was, before he retired, an electronics engineer who was one of the team leaders on the blue streak rocket. He should know eh?
I'm sure wonderful gems are chucked every day:(. Such is progress?

it used to be a different story years ago when my dad was co owner of a a record shop most of the stuff in the shop was at the time from the tip but that was years & years ago and we are not so lucky no but the odd gems do come up. Maybe i'm stuck in the past but those days were good also the HI-FI we used to pick up was :eek:. Sad no longer allowed to sell electrical gear :(

My goodness, I have never heard such a dynamic and powerful recording of this marvellous symphony.
Dynamic changes (and there are a lot of them in Bruckner) are hairpin sharp and pin-you-to-the-wall abrupt.
Brass is raucous and thrilling.

Popped into my local record shop in Wrexham today (Moonlight Records), and purloined the following... First off, from the 1950s, three rather nice (minty) vintage Decca FFRR 10" records, which I always find sound wonderful, (all £1 each):

Strangely, they brought out an unexpected OCD side to my nature - I got fixated on only buying and listening to SACDs. :mental:
The other 99%+ of my collection wasn't getting played, even though it generally held better musical performances. Totally potty and very, as I said, annoying. :rolleyes:
The only solution was to get rid of the SACD machine. So I did. :)
I tried it a few times - some bloody thing every time! :doh: :lol:

I know what you mean but that didn't last long for me because, as you say, there are so many great CD-only performances. I hardly notice these days except for a few SACDs that show a clean pair of heels to any CD. It never affects my listening selections.

It's just wonderful, Martin - the pacing and articulation are spot on, the vocals are pure magic.
I bought the Alessandrini version that you (I think) previously recommended, but after an initial period of enjoyment due, I suspect, to its sheer individuality and clarity, it began to sound mannered and too minimalist to me ... and is currently up for sale on eBay!
It'll be interesting to see what you think of the Hogwood.

1st time I've listened to an LP in several months, my interest re-kindled by a visit to Jake lordmortlock where I helped him set up his lovely new VPI tt. :thumbsup:
I'm listening thru the phonostage of my vintage Marantz quadraphonic receiver, thence to my Grado 325i headphones.
And very good it sounds as well. I do like Levine's Brahms. :)

Schubert Trout Quintet by the Hungarian Quartet.
Good bass playing which sounds great on the phones. Must listen of the main rig tomorrow. Just doing sort of background listening at the mo. Difficult though, the damn music keep grabbing my attention.

I received the Pergolesi yesterday, Jerry, and I have to agree that it's truly wonderful. Kirkby and Bowman make a superb pairing and they have kept it less operatic (than, say, the Bonney / Scholl recording) and better enunciated. Lovely!

I like Grieg's chamber music - less popular than his orchestral works, but still well worth investigating, imo. String quartets, violin sonatas ....

Similarly energetic, but less idiosyncratic. I suspect Standage/Pinnock is closer to Vivaldi's intentions, let's face it Sparf's interpretation is kind of weird! - I like them both.

I found my attention wandering during the first two movements, but things ‘clicked’ and grabbed me for the final three movements. Will be interesting to compare Norrington’s reading with that of John Elliot Gardener on DGG Archiv.

Found this enjoyable enough, but Respighi is not really my thing. Was put off by the Phase 4 Stereo banner as these are usually ‘sooped-up’ ‘gee whizz’ recordings designed to show off your system. But I have to admit I was impressed by the SQ and especially the width and depth of the sound stage.
Not sure if I will play it much though.

I picked up this CD set quite cheaply - have so far listened to the 6th symphony. Very fast but flowing 1st movement, but I adjusted to that. Slow mvt is nicely paced and very beautiful. Superbly rambunctious (is that a word?) storm sequence with the horns blatting away with utmost enthusiasm! Lovely finale with the big theme allowed the space it needs.
The playing is excellent - particularly the solo winds, and the recording superb.
Very nice - looking forward to hearing the other 8. :)

Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave overture is one of my favourite pieces, but it seems to be a difficult piece to bring off and excellent recorded performances are like rocking horse poo - I mean they are very rare, not smelly. ;)
A recent LP purchase has turned up a superb performance by Malcolm Sargent - marvellously articulated and surgingly powerful, yum!

This production is enjoyable and irritating in about equal measure!
It's done as much as a farce as a conventional G&S production, and Jon English's ego has to be seen to be believed. But for a left-field Mikado it's worth an occasional viewing.
David Gould as the Mikado is a pretty amazing bass, not to mention an amazing physique! ....

In a catalogue of outstanding film scores this one from John Williams is my personal favourite and perhaps his most evocative. The film is a powerful and moving masterpiece and JW has captured the emotion perfectly in this score. "LOOK!!! LOOK!!! The Cadillac of the skies....". That line alone almost moves me to tears when thought of in the context of the story...

Marco, you really need a dedicated setup with a mono single coil, 25 micron tip cartridge or. at the very least a Denon DL-102 to get the best out of those mono recordings. The difference it makes is far greater than swapping cables or plugs.;)

My latest listen is Scheherazade (Rimsky) conducted by Gergiev - good tempi, well recorded, great soundstage.
@James: I was not aware of that version of the Sorrowful Songs (I have three). How does it compare with Dawn Upshaw (the defacto standard)?
As an aside what do you think of the Munch as the artwork? They have horror in common but the music is of defeat, with some hope, but The Scream is very raw.

So i changed to the SACD of Paavo Järvi conducting the Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra performing Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique.
This really os a beautiful piece.
For me, who is very, very new in the classical genré it's also very entertaining and not so hard to chew as some work can be... ;)

I have not heard these despite being a Bruch fanboy. Unlike Franz Schreker who is currently invisible in the shadow of Richard Strauss Max has emerged refulgent despite the reputation of Brahms. Are the symphonies of the same standard as this concerto style works?

They aren't as obviously melodic and accessible - "good sturdy mid-European romantic orchestral" probably sums them up for me - well worth an occasional airing, and maybe they'll grow on me more as I hear them more.

Most importantly, I was referring to your own contributions to this section of the forum, on this thread and elsewhere, as after having asked for a classical section, your interest in using the area appears to have tailed off… Perhaps there’s something we could do to make the classical music section more interesting for you? Hahahaha… Welshpool is only about 40 minutes from me! My car was having some work done to it nearby (in Knockin), and my dad and I were killing some time before collecting the car, so we popped into Welshpool, and I had a rummage through the charity shops for some vinyl - well, you know me! :eyebrows:
Btw, have you checked out Retro Media in Welshpool market village? They had quite a bit of vinyl in there, and apparently had just taken in 1000s of records, but hadn’t got them out on display yet. If you don’t know of it, it might be worth checking out next time :)

That maybe true, but the value judgement for me of US$30.00 for a single work on an SACD just doesn't add up. I did enjoy their SACD of Wish You Were Here so I know they do very good work. The RCA issues, though, are extremely fine by any standards.

I have two pressings of the Triple Concerto with that quartet of talent, and many other versions besides. Although it requires three soloists I have seen a few versions - and heard one live, the Trio de Milano - where an established Piano Trio take on the soloists roles. This is probably the go-to version, but I enjoyed others as well.

Cant quite read that but vivaldi's concertos for Mandolin are without exception simply fabulous. Even the modern interpretations on guitar are at least as good.

That's a strange recording, actually, Andrei - a 25p charity shop bargain - a German LP of various Vivaldi concertos including mandolin, but the orchestra is called a zupforchester - a whole orchestra made up of mandolins - a huge strumming sound - amazing!
Btw, Jerry, don’t know how far you are from Hay-on-Wye, but if you’re ever down that way, I thoroughly recommend you visit the Broad Street Book Centre, as they have a superb selection of classical music on CD - and rather well priced it is, too! :)

It was Del’s birthday yesterday, so after having stayed overnight in Brecon, at one of our favourite haunts there, we decided to tour around the area, so headed to Hay and then into Herefordshire, which is a stunningly beautiful part of the country, especially on a sunny day like yesterday.
We found a lovely quaint little 12th Century inn too, in Dorstone, just outside of Hay. Thoroughly recommended for lunch if you’re in the area :http://www.pandyinn.co.uk/
Honestly, you’d love that book shop. There must’ve been at least 1500-2000 classical CDs (from all the major composers), with prices ranging from £3, second-hand, to £30 new. For vinyl lovers, there were a couple of shops selling records, too - oh, and also some weird and wonderful antique/bric-a-brac shops, where we picked up a few interesting bits, such as some antique baubles for our Christmas tree.
Anyway, I digress!

Was giving this a spin earlier. I love a bit of Ms Norman, but she is the icing on a very lovely cake with Julia Varady all impassioned intensity as the composer, and Edita Gruberova all sparkle as Zerbinetta and the (originally Philips) recording a lovely blend of chamber intimacy and warm ambience. Delicious.

That's a strange recording, actually, Andrei - a 25p charity shop bargain - a German LP of various Vivaldi concertos including mandolin, but the orchestra is called a zupforchester - a whole orchestra made up of mandolins - a huge strumming sound - amazing!
:stalks: Hmmmmm. Some how it is difficult to imagine massed. The closest I can come is some USSR balalaika orchestras.

Strangely, on a covered table outside a closed shop - "please drop money through letter box in envelope provided." So I did. :)
Includes the wonderful Arpeggione Sonata - here transcribed for flute. It takes a few seconds to adjust to the sound of the flute in this music (usually played on cello or viola, with piano) but after that the superb musicianship comes through. A wonderful disc! :thumbsup:

The music really flows along in this recording, and I just love the drive behind their version of "Wonderous Machine" it's so powerful, and it's hard to believe that it was written in the late seventeenth century.
For a more purist version, you could also try the Alfred Deller/Sir Michael Tippett recording from 1956, I have that one too and it's pretty good. There was a recent Radio 3 programme on the various recorded versions of the Ode to St Cecilia. I think they went for the Taverner/Parrott version as their favourite, but each to their own!

It's not often that I listen to 'historical' recordings but this 1932 effort has been remastered by Mark Obert-Thorn and sounds quite acceptable - and the performance of the Elgar violin concerto by a teenage Menuhin is justifiably famous.

Wilhelm Furtwängler (cond.) Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra , with Tilla Briem, Elisabeth Höngen, Peter Anders, Tudolf Watzke and the Bruno Kittel Choir.
This is a remastering of the original 1942 recording. Naturally it is a monophonic recording, which in places seems a little worse for ware (probably understandable given the tape technology of the time). In fact I found the sound was distorted on many of the orchestral tuttis, but I also appreciated the very large dynamics captured: the low-level opening is especially good, but when the orchestra comes in fully, the sound is definitely distorted.
Also being monophonic and played over a pair of speakers, all the instruments appear on top of one another spatially, an effect I dislike. However this is ameliorated if played over a single speaker: as it would have been if listening to the concert (performed in Berlin 22-24 March 1942) on the radio. For me, listening to monophonic recordings always ‘sounds’ better when played via a single channel system. The capture of the venue’s acoustic (the Berlin Opera House?) is especially pleasing.
As to the performance itself, well I have numerous versions of the 9th and have always been fascinated with Furtwängler’s reading of Beethoven works. This is no exception: not my favourite version but an interesting capture of a live and superb performance made at the time when Furtwängler was probably at his peak. At 73.02 this is a fairly leisurely version; typical of Furtwängler.
