The Francescatti Sibelius violin concerto surprised me by its excellence.
The Stokowski 1st symphony was a big letdown, though - Ol' Stokie is not in his element here. :(

The Rossini sound quality is kind of forced, squally and unpleasant, as is some of the solo singing!
But the Verdi Requiem is very nice indeed - including a magnificently recorded bass drum! ... WHOOOM !! :eek:

For a truly great Rossini Stabat Mater, Jerry, you need to get hold of the fabulous Giulini recording on DG with the Philharmonia. The soloists are superb, notably the tenor Dalmacio Gonzalez who sends shivers up my spine.

The organ playing in this from Michael Ras is somthing else - talk about DEEP bass!! :eek: Definitely not a recording to be replayed through 'diddy-sized' speakers ;)

This Dutch production was made in close cooperation with Philips and Marantz Europe, who are headquartered in Holland. Five Schoeps mikes were used for the five-channel Pyramix System DSD recording, using Ed Meitner's convertors. The recording engineer gets two pages in the booklet to talk about his approach to recording these works. The site was the RC Bartholomeus Church in Zevenbergen, which has a rich acoustic. The philosophy of recording was to bring the atmosphere of the venue to the listener by retaining the ambience. This meant micing at more distance from the organ pipes. As a result, in silences between tracks you can hear the sound of the pneumatic pump and at times the action of the organ itself. The idea is for the softer passages to float in the church's ambience but for the climaxes to never blow one away.

Sonically the production is entirely successful, and the listener can concentrate on the realistic feeling of sitting in the church during the performance of this cycle of preludes and fugues inspired by Bach's original. Normally heard on the piano (Keith Jarrett has one of the best versions out), organist Ras decided that not only were the works flexible for different keyboards (as were Bach's) but some even sounded better on the organ than the piano. There were many decisions to be made regarding registrations - which of course are not used with the piano. The process was like orchestrating Shostakovich's piano works - selecting the appropriate timbres for each voice or section. There are more than 300 changes of register on the SACD, and very few edits were made in an effort to preserve the flow of the performances.

Titov seems to conduct a lot of the series, which also aims to showcase less known works. This is one of my favourite discs from the series that I've heard so far.

Perhaps the perfect recording of this heartbreaking piece? - so much better than the emotionless Zinman/Upshaw version, imo. I've read that Gorecki hated that famous Upshaw recording, too!

Thanks to incredible service from Igloo, I collected this from the Post Office today. It's a lovely recording with excellent playing. Hearing Shostakovich like this is enlightening and much of it is quite playful. An interestingly different rendition from the piano.

The atmosphere and sense of space as each track starts, and before the organ enters, is palpable. Good bass, as you say, but doesn't plumb the depths of the giant Ruffattis like the ones in Garden Grove Community Church (below) and Davies Symphony Hall.

Anyway, glad you like the Shossy. What captivates me most about that recording is the natural ambience portrayed and the way that the acoustic of the church is captured so effectively, all adding to the sense of musical occasion. The organ sounds are also uncannily lifelike.

There are many very fine recordings of this symphony, but this one is laugh-out-loud exhilarating. After a very slow and portentous intro to the 1st mvt, the performance explodes into life! :eek:

I very much enjoyed a BBC mag freebie disc with a Vierne organ symphony on ... so I thought I'd have a go with this well-reviewed set of the whole lot. :)

It's a lovely sounding organ (one by the legendary Cavaille Colle), and the sq is vibrant, warm and nicely engulfing. Played numero 1 so far, just once, and quite enjoyed it. The melodies and rhythms are quite subtlely embedded in the wash of sound - I reckon it's gonna be quite hard work getting in to these works.

Hmm. :hmm: An interesting comparison!
The Chung is the more recent and more sophisticated recording - it makes the Giulini sound a little bit 'obvious' and crude.
The tenor soloists couldn't be more different - Gonzales for Giulini is dynamic, focussed and exciting. Gimenez for Chung is softer, warmer more diffuse, more delicate and emotional.
The female soloists in the Chung are superior, imo - gorgeous tone from both Bartoli and Orgonasova, lovely. Ricciarelli is a bit squally at times for Giulini.

Which to have? :scratch: ... I think I'll keep both! :)

Continuing the Gorecki theme from Jerry, I dug this out for another listen. Some gorgeous music here, part gentle and part dynamic (especially in the Kleines Requiem). I'm starting to detect a circularity to Gorecki's music, rather like Glass, which makes him quite recognisable. Perhaps that's why I like Glass so much?

But, yes, rather good - a very different take on the music compared to the piano version. Some of it worked for me better than other parts on first listen. I look forward to getting better acquainted with this. :)

Well well well! I recognise the cover. I gave up my vinyl collection (30 lashes) a long time ago. But I remember this cover. I am now paying for my sins as I have to repurchase many albums. This was dredged up from a dusty corner not having seen the light for decades . . . turned out to be a lovely pressing, and vintage stereo (a bit ping-pongy in places).

I much prefer Bernstein the composer to Bernstein the conductor. I saw a broadcast (from the Proms maybe?) of him conducting Elgar's Enigma variations. Lots of Bernstein, not a lot of Elgar. By the time we came to "Nimrod" I was ready to chuck something through the telly. :donk:

Inspired by Bob's post, I finally got around to playing this CD (it arrived a few weeks ago!).
Ummm. I have to confess I gave up half way thru the 2nd mvt. It's a very highly rated recording, though. :scratch: It just seemed too wayward and manipulative to me. Ah well, on to the eBay-pending shelf with it! :eyebrows:

The violin concerto with Zino Francescatti, once again. This really is very fine. -- Bernstein as conductor. ;) And he is very good here - but a fair bit younger. Maybe Lennie got more self-obsessed as he got older? I'll have to get hold of his much earlier New York Phil Mahler 5 recording and see if my theory holds water. :) Edit: now ordered.

Much more interesting - I like Tuur's music anyway, and the 2 pieces here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tuur-Sibelius-Rachmaninov-Orchestral-Works/dp/B00074CBII/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1366868180&sr=1-1&keywords=anu+tali) are good. The Rachmaninov choral songs are great, too, and superbly recorded. Not sure about the rare Sibelius piece, The Wood Nymph; the music's fine but there is a very closely recorded narrator .... :scratch:.

Hard on the heels of RVW/Britten/Elgar from the Oregon Symphony is this stunning disc from the Kansas Symphony:

Michael Stern easily has the measure of this music, and IMO the performances can hold their own against the usual suspects of Boult, Barbirolli, Handley and Mehta (his LAPO Decca Enigma is one of my favourite recordings of all time). Not only that but the Kansas orchestra is on top form.

My only other Reference Recordings issue is the Malcolm Arnold Overtures one (as a hi-res download), and I was expecting a similarly open, deep and detailed sound, with plenty of bite to it. Playing my rip of the new disc (I never play CDs these days) via headphones (HD650s initially) I was initially both under- and overwhelmed. The incredible bass depth was matched with a really subdued treble - the brass had no "edge", percussion was laid back, the flutes didn't pierce the sound like they do in real life, and the violins were smooth to the point of anonymity. Switching to Denon 7000s was better, and then through my PMCs it was better still.

But Boult's 1970s VW Wasps recording was still much better. Normally I store the CD immediately after ripping, but this one was left out and I happened to notice the HDCD logo on the back of the case. Having recently bought a new Cambridge Audio Blu-ray player which can play virtually everything I checked up and it plays HDCDs - not that I know what the difference is TBH over "normal" CDs.

Well - NOW I got it! Full range sound to die for. Instruments with some character. Fantastic bass. Ok - it's still a "smooth" and warm orchestral sound, more analogue than digital - but it just draws you into the music.

One other thing - maybe not important to a lot of people - but Michael Stern divides his violins left/right. Praise Be! Composers don't write antiphonally for the 1st and 2nd violins only to have the 2nds appear as a pale echo from behind the firsts.

Hmm :hmm: I quickly decided this was dire but gave it a chance. I got into the Gubaidulina a bit more, mainly after I decided it would probably go quite well as the soundtrack to a Lithuanian stop motion noir animation about the story of a Mongolian goat herder boy who enters a protracted existential crisis after losing his favourite goat.

After pondering this for some time I realised we were well into the Chin etudes. My concentration wondered again and we into the Ligeti. I didn't really notice much difference between them all :scratch:

I liked the lego people on the cover though :) and I'm keen to try out some others from the Odradek label...

Mika, if you like this then Jordi Savall on Alia Vox provides an interesting contrast. http://www.alia-vox.com/cataleg.php?id=95. I would agree with this review http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jun/19/rameau-lorchestre-louis-xv-savall in that he doesn't do the subtle stuff quite as well as the more up tempo work.

More Pfitzner - are you looking for symphonies that are a riot of exuberance and excitement? Then look elsewhere. :eyebrows: That can be great fun, but these are more subtle and nuanced and, well, quieter and more thoughtful. I've a nice feeling that these works will amply repay further listening.

Recently oiked out a much-neglected Music For Pleasure LP of Tchaikovsky (Nutcracker suite) and Mendelssohn (Midsummer Nights Dream suite). I was surprised to find it played by the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra conducted by Felix Slatkin as that fact had never registered with me.

Doing a bit of digging I found it was from a 1957 US-only Capitol disc. The MFP disc (undated) hails from the days when it was a Paul Hamlyn company, and the pressing quality would put many modern-day releases to shame.

With sparkling performances in Capitol's "Full-dimensional sound" this was a happy find. The recording is wide rather than deep, and more like a "pit orchestra" sound than the typical concert-hall.

Wyn Morris is a much underrated conductor, imo.

His Beethoven cycle -including the 10th! - is excellent.

The 5th here is quite fast and very energetic and propulsive. And he gets a massive sound out of the LSO.

Listening as I type, on LP via my luvvly Shure V15iii, for the 2nd time on the trot - the symphony is superb. Walton's 1st doesn't have it all its own way by any means!

A superb Tchaik piano trio, probably the best I have heard.

The Shosty is a painfully intense piece, wracked with angst.
But not in this recording! -- it could have been written by Dvorak. Pretty, but pointless, imo.

This afternoon: the first Bliss LP I bought, back in the day - Music for Strings/Meditations on a theme by John Blow - CBSO/Rignold on Lyrita.

Great string playing from the pre-Rattle CBSO. The Meditations always made a big impact on me. You only get to hear Blow's stately theme at the end, and by the time it arrives it seems like an old friend, as the "variations" had thoroughly turned it inside-out in the preceding 25 minutes.

The other Variations are much later, and IMO not as "good" - but I may not have persevered enough with them. I was at the first performance of these, at the Fairfield Hall in Croydon. Odd concert: a very old Stokowski murdering a Tchaikovsky symphony, IIRC, and Tod Handley conducting the Bliss.

Hey, this is good.
Previously I'd heard Schiff in Bach, Beethoven and Schubert and thought his style was kind of generic - he played all the music the same, regardless.
Having heard this disc, though, I realise that he plays everything as if it were Mozart.
That works well when it's Mozart he is actually playing. :lol:

That's true - at first listen I couldn't detect any structure to it - it just kind of rambled along chaotically (and not very interestingly after a good start) to my ear.
Late romantic English music can do that, for me. Elgar and Delius being as guilty as anyone else, on occasion.
The one notable exception being RVW, for me.

But I will give it another go and will happily eat my words if I change my mind. :)

I snaffled a carrier bag full of classical stuff on vinyl that tickled my fancy in a charity shop in Falmouth last week. I could have easily walked out with 40 or 50 records but I was actually there to get rid of stuff rather than to collect more!

I kind of dislike playing "audiophile" recordings on principle ;) -- but this disc is very fine musically as well as sonically. And it happily doesn't share the hyped up treble of all too many Living Presence recordings.
Interesting, too - baroque harpsichord playing from the early 1960s, before all the HIP malarkey got going and became the norm. A fairly steady pulse to it, but full of life and energy. I'll be seeking more of Puyana's work out. :)

Seriously into the Mozart piano concertos at the moment at Jerry Towers.

Despite the rave reviews as well as a quick sample download, the 22nd concerto here was a big disappointment. My attention rapidly drifted off, all very generic really.

Out came Barenboim / Berlin for the 22nd concerto ....

Ah, that's more like it. Some emotional involvement from the pianist! The orchestral accompaniment is a little heavy and sonic textures a bit thick - but still very enjoyable overall.

I like this - not quite the involvement as from Barenboim, but still good and the orchestra is lighter, more appropriate for the music than the Berlin Phil. The recording is clearer, too.

One of the best Mono versions of Bruckner's 9th.

I have the original DGG issue but my Heliodor copy has less vinyl roar. I've found that Heliodor reissues (electronically transcribed for stereo) sound best listened to in mono. In my experience a Denon DL102 gives the best results with these transcriptions, but a stereo cart wired up as mono or a good old mono button on the pre amp are almost as good. This equally applies to Decca ECS transcriptions and transcribed RCA's.

Good, very good, but not great. Nice to have it in my G&S DVD collection, though.
The version live from Central Park with the same cast except for Lansbury, in very poor sonics and visuals, was a lot better, imo.

Two 40 minute-ish symphonies.
The 3rd (placed 1st on the CD) is quite light-hearted and easy going, the 2nd is more serious and powerful.
Nicely recorded, both are well worthwhile. :)

Not that I imagine anyone cares, but vivaldis l'estro armonico and then, having a seriuosly baroque spell, to my total joy and anazement my dads copy of david oistrach playing the bach double violin concerto has succunbed to the Marco moth rcm treatment and is sublime beyond belief.
This awesome bloody amplifier, like a valve giant, is making the sweetest music at levels nearly too quiet to here. Lost for words

An interesting CD in several ways ....
1) I'd not come across this Naxos CD before - in fact, this is a release by "Naxos Canada" of Canadian musicians with a Chinese soloist. It's not listed on Amazon UK, I'd not realised Naxos released CDs by country.
2) the recording features a different "star" violin for each of the 6 concertos - 3strads, 1 Amati and 2 by Guarneri
3) it's an excellent performance and recording!

Hmm. There's no doubt about it, in my mind; Kovacevich has lost it a bit since his youth. Very fine playing, technically, but somehow the musical 'spark' eludes him in these 1990's recordings.
I played the Pathetique, Pastoral and op. 110 from the set.

Oh yes, that is in many ways my definitive version of the second. Both the LP and CD are good and convey the hugeness of the playing extremely well. I saw Tennstedt conducting it with the LPO at the Festival Hall and it remains (together with Rattle some years later) a high point of my concert going experiences.

I played this again in an attempt to get more from it, and I did manage to. Despite it not reaching the heights of Jarvi's Allegro, it is exciting to listen to and does convey some emotion (more than a couple of my recordings manage) without falling into performance-by-numbers. I just wish he didn't keep pulling back the brass just when they need to blare out over the orchestra. Of course, this could be a limitation of the RLPO's brass section. Not bad, but the Jarvi remains the best.
