This is a recommended digital download in Augusts HiFi news, with 95% for SQ, resolution is at 24/96kHz on Qobuz. I am rather enjoying it is my first hearing of Mahler’s 4th Symphony, it feels a bit lighter and more joyful than the later ones. It was recorded during the Covid lockdown in the Concert hall with the orchestra 2m spaced and an additional 2 m added to the stage to do so.
I am also very pleased with how things are sounding with the Audiolab as DAC from the MacBook with the Krell.

T4S new release out with youngest soloist Christian Li, 13 years old. Just listened to it and it is rather good, a bit full blow as full orchestra but gives it force, well worth a listen IMO.

Interesting take on early C20 Viennese school as they are period performers using gut strings and less vibrato. Much more to my taste and makes the works more listenable IMO.

Yesterday before going the Opticians in Honiton I popped into the Hospicecare Charity Warehouse on the off chance they were doing vinyls again. My luck was in and they had a load, mostly classical, quite a few look as if they came from a collection of predominantly early classical, so I selected 2 classical and a couple of others for a £1 each.
Played yesterday after cleaning, musically I think it is very good, I am not usually into choral music but this is a rather lovely recording and nice pieces. the previous owner had noted on the inner sleeve as Very Good recording.

Nice additions there, Adrian. I regularly pick up stuff like that from charity shops, and some of those old recordings and performances are stunning, knocking into a cocked hat the majority of stuff produced today.
The 'golden era', for me, is late 50s to late 70s. Look out for anything on Decca, RCA Living Voice, HMV, Philips (Holland), Mercury Living Presence and Columbia, as not only do the recordings sound stunning, but in good condition, some are highly collectible!:)

The Quartet was formed at South Hampstead High School and has been playing since 2002.
The recording was made by Geoff Foster (there is no recording number, so the recording was made privately and is probably of limited numbers). The sleeve notes are dated London, September 2009.
Like all newly-formed quartets that only have had a few years of playing together, there is an excitement and verve to the playing which I find quite refreshing. I hope they are still playing together and have developed the subtle understanding and interplay between themselves that the established and more famous string quartets display.

Picked up up this Decca recording about a week ago for £3 in the Hospice Care warehouse, it was rather dirty and needed a clean which I have just got round to, turns out it looks minty, occasional crackle so I think another scrub in the ultrasonic bath should should do it.
I already have 2 other recordings of Mahler's Symphony No 5, one by Rafael Kubelik & the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the other Claudio Abbado & Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I think I prefer this recording/rendition, it seems to have more depth and emotion to how it is presented, but maybe I am talking rubbish.

Feeling a bit Bach this morning:lol:....
One that has been waiting to be played, it was one of several freebies from a collection belonging to the Dad of a friend, great condition and as usual for Decca good recordings and pressing.
Sounding great on the Chris Roger's PRO9 Transmission Lines, lots of clarity, detail and oomph in the lower registers(without bloom/boom).

If you come across these Time Life recordings in a charity or 2nd-hand shop do not hesitate if they are in good condition, they are generally very well selected recordings, the vinyls themselves are excellent with virtually no background noise, some of the best classical records I have, and I have 4 of these Mozart boxed sets, all great.

Bach loved them too his concerto for 4 harspichords was based on one and I think he arranged another for organ as well.

Sorry Adrian, I can't help you there - the only bit of Also Sprach Zarathustra I have is the opening track on an LP of the soundtrack to the film '2001 A Space Odessey'. And that was bought, not for the Richard Strauss, but for the Ligeti.

No worries, on TAS I was recommended "the Eugene Ormandy recording with the Philadelphia Orchestra on EMI", I have found a reasonably priced NM copy on Discogs, so when it arrives and I have had a listen I will let you know what I think.
By the way the whole piece is very well worth listening to, there are several parts of it I am sure I have heard in films or TV documentaries/ads, apart from the opening that is used in 2001.

It certainly does count is that's not "classical" then I don't know what is. (Classical in inverted commas as it's not strictly the c.1760-1830 classical period.)

lol.... i like opera even tho its all in italian usually. gilbert and sullivan operettas too, as my brother used to sing all the bass roles with a few biggish companies in places like the usher hall and around country and even abroad. he had a fine voice when younger. all started in school doing often the said operettas etc.

In general I find that a particular conductor will not always provide the best interpretaion of all of a composer's compositions, so in the case of Beethoven and Mozart, I will have separate LPs of their works performed/conducted by those I think the best; but of course it's entirely subjective.

I like Beethoven, I know he’s not everyone’s cuppa tea, but along with Mozart, and Vivaldi probably a master of his art.
I have nearly all his symphonies on two records, I have a good 3rd, 5th and 6th. I am not that keen on the rest of them in terms of the renditions/recordings.
That’s where I find classical tricky, you might find a composition that you like but sometimes get put off by an odd interpretation in how it’s performed. I suppose it’s the one musical performance is everything, but some blues and jazz fans could also seek the perfect performance of a song or piece.
I will see if the version is available at a reasonable price.

I'm sure it's not as bad as Nigel Kennedy's version. (Although to give his due, at the time he did turn a lot of people on to Classical music.)

Yeah and I'm only 2200 rips in, it's taken a year to get that far as I was using exact audio copy, the slow way with test copy and all. I'm not using a slitely faster way as I've decided I'd rather have more music than 100% copies of each one, 80% copies will do :d
I have one backup of it so far but definitely looking into more backups! I've given my other backup to a collector friend with the proviso he gives it back should I need it, that way we both get to enjoy it.

I'm now using a slower way I mean, can't work the edit button.
i just use j river's ripper. very rare it fails. its maybe not super fast but about 5 mins a disc i guess. jriver is good software, although i mostly replay via roon these days.
ive used eac before but tbh i couldn't detect any audible difference from jriver.
