I was reading an ecstatic review of Felix Weingarner's Brahms symphony recordings in Fanfare, a legendary conductor from early 20thC, but they don't seem to be available streamed.
But I did come across music composed by him - these string quartets are excellent! I shall be exploring his symphonies next.

Ended up playing on DVD player, feeding usb and into Audacity to record digitally and then transfer to NAS drive. I have noticed the odd click, and am beginning to suspect SACD/CD degradation going on, very annoying, especially as this is a great recording.

Sorted the blighter out. I noticed some fine scratches across the disk, so I took my SACD life in my hands and applied some very fine plastic polish and rubbed liberally until I could not see them, and I then polished the whole disc, popped into CD player and hey presto as if like magic it plays, no noise either. So I am enjoying it whilst I transfer it to FLAC. ��

Kind of with you on that, Jerry. Trying to 'do' Hindemith at the moment as I don't feel I've given him a fair go. His lieder are excellent though, at least the ones I've heard. I have some chamber music - piano sonatas and the like - on order & hope I'll make some headway with his smaller stuff.

Here's one of my favourite LPs, Buxtehude this time, played by Lionel Rogg on a pedal harpsichord - in his will it was noted that Bach had two of these instruments which was quite something in those days (v expensive). Basically the pedal harpsichord was a full two manual harpsichord with a pedal board that had plucked bass strings slung underneath, intended as an alternative for organ practice (which pre-electricity required gathering an army of small boys to puff the bellows). In fact some of Bach's music is quite idiomatic for harpsichord + pedalboard, notably some of the 'instructional' organ music written by Bach senior for sons WF and CPE.

Though clearly intended for organ, Buxtehude's music comes across wonderfully on this instrument and there's a Passacaglia here too. Unfortunately not currently available on Cd but some free downloads are available.

There are some wonderfully low bass notes there.

I remember whilst at university we played this on two sets of speakers: my own, a Wharfedale 8" driver in a 1 cu ft distributed port enclosure, and Lowther Acoustas with PM6 drivers.

I fully expected the Lowthers to perform better than my speakers; indeed when the low note was reached my speakers distorted heavily producing a spluttering flatulent noise. However on the Lowthers, when the low note was reached there was complete silence! - the bass frequency was below the cut off of the Lowther horn design.

Yes I listened to this the other day, not nearly so keen on it!

Well AoS member came to listen to my speakers yesterday and brought a bunch of CD's and his amp (very nice valve amp).

I was rather taken by this piece of music, he actually gave me it as he has several versions of it, most kind. tHe is considering whether to have my speakers.

I have rather surprised myself as choral work is not usually my bag, the occasion Gregorian Chant maybe, however this by Carlo Gesualdo I find rather stunning. The Tallis Scholars perform it beautifully in Walpole St Peters, Norfolk. The vocal interplay and tricks are lovely. To me it sounds as if just two microphones were used position just above and in front of the performers, the ambience of the church certainly comes through.

If you like choral works and have not heard this then it is well worth a listen, after all if it did get the attention of an old rocker like me it must be good.

This is a marvellous piece of music and beautifully played, I have this and two of the other Richard Strauss recordings by Fabio Luisi and they are all stunning.

An "event" on 4th Feb this year, where Chinese spy network Huawei (oops, sorry, I mean mobile phone and communications company) collaborated with composer and musicians to complete Schubert's 8th symphony.

From what I can gather, the Huawei AI chip invented some themes based on the 1st 2 completed movements and sketches for the last two and the composer guy orchestrated them into complete movements.

Have a listen to AAM/Hogwood playing CPE Bach string symphonies. Very similar recording quality and some fine brisk playing of very good works.

Yes I think close mic'ing was the order of the day with these l'Oiseau Lyre recordings which helped separation and also caught the timbre of the gut strings nicely. Unlike flour example many King's Consort recordings on Hyperion.

I don't know why but I find this a slightly disappointing recording, from two aspects in places there is some low bass noise as if the microphone is picking up resonance from the floor, this is mainly efficient in piano only parts. Also if sound a little lack lustre, in other words not very engaging.

I keep looking for a good version of the Brandenburg Concertos and came across this yesterday, originally recorded in 1958, it is a rather nice rendition I think, this is the re-released version in stereo .

I got this one yesterday along with the previous record I played(Bach), from 2nd hand shop in Beer, and it is a cracker, Mint and the recording is superb, lovely dynamics and beautifully played. Very uplifting bit of Mozart. If you come across a good copy of this and like Mozart then buy it.

The Pictures at an Exhibition is good, and interestingly orchestrated by Leo Funtek rather than the standard Ravel.

But the standout is the Songs and Dances of Death, sung with amazing power and passion by Martti Talvela.

Quite unusual interpretations - generally laidback and very lucid. The word minimalist comes to mind.

I think you need to consider the context, classical music was effectively the pop music of its day, using instruments of the time, primarily wriiten and performed for the privileged. Folk music was the people’s music. If you consider say Vivaldi concertos or Mozart sometimes they were expressing a feeling or a piece of poetry, or landscape. Other pieces being just wriiten to entertain. Later symphonies came which you can consider expressionist. Beethoven being a great exponent of these.

If you want an easy start try the Four Season by Vivaldi. If you listen carefully you will get it, there are parts of the music representing birds and animals, a good copy will have a synopsis or look it up on line.

Another stunner is Beethoven’s symphony number 5.

Most music if not all is an expression of human condition, feelings or what we see, even pop although sometimes it is purely commercial and trite. There is good and bad in all genres, but I would not discount any of it as you may very well miss out on something that is excellent.

A lot of old-school Vivaldi interpretations with big ensembles struggled to get to the fine lines of the music, relying instead on virtuosity in the 'soloist' or 'soloists' with everyone else vamping along. I think we know a lot more about how to perform it now.

Got this beauty along with three others for £2 each and all NM. This one is a great recording by Ruggiero Ricci with the LSO, I think he must have been one of the best ever violinists, very expressive.

Interesting you say that Jerry, as I am also using YouTube more and more - the sheer range is phenomenal, and even the sound quality is more than acceptable on some of these recent live concerts. Haven't bought a cd in months...
