had a good listen to both CDs. I didn't fall asleep, although being quite knackered with the day's activity, I could have done. Actually I found it soothing and helpful to listen to whilst I was cooking! :D

When my stepdad passed, several boxes of assorted stuff went into my brother's loft. Now he is moving house so having a clearout. Hundreds of books, CDs, records, DVDs. Very little that i would give house room to (never heard of The Kaye Sisters, but a shitload of 7" singles).

All of it is going to the charity shop, but I kept back a few classical CDs on Deutsche Gramophone label. I randomly picked this one first - I actually recognise a lot of what's on it, so may keep it.

Steve - I would encourage you to listen to a few more of the classical CDs. It's a huge genre, and you may find some surprises and likes amongst them.

Like you I was never much interested in classical music, but that changed in my 30s, now it forms the largest part of my music collection.

Thanks Barry, I certainly will be keeping the rest of these CDs - I now have a grand total of eight! But the first two I played I found enjoyable in their quite different ways. And it helped that my set up seemed to like the genre, sounding somehow relaxing and dynamic! I wasn't expecting that...

But I do expect at some point that I will find I prefer some recordings to others, and could then build on those preferences. With your help of course :)

Excuse my ignorance Barry, but is the one you are playing a different piece of music to mine, or the same but from a different composer/orchestra? These are the kind of things that confuse me.

It is the same composition: Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D-major, Opus 61. However in your case the violinist is Shlomo Mintz and the Orchestra is the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Giuseppi Sinopoli.

Same bit of music, but different soloist and different 'band'. :)

Looks interesting - it's the sort of thing I like, but tend to play only one side or another.

Gregorian chant is another genre I find relaxing to listen too, but one side of an LP is enough.
