I saw Sol Gabetta play the Elgar in Middlesbrough a few weeks ago, and it was mesmerising. The recording is up there with the Du Pré/Barbirolli for me. Not as tempestuous perhaps, but plenty of bite and life and very touching.

Woo! - it's a good'un.
There's a sense of majesty with Karajan.
And the vocal soloists - mein Gott - Janowitz, Wunderlich, Ludwig, Fischer-Dieskau. :scratch: not bad. :D
So different from my usual Hogwood it could be a different piece.
But that's fine, I can enjoy both.

I went to the concert with my friend Anthony, and we were listening to the Julian Lloyd Webber/Yehudi Menuhin CD a few days later which, although very nice (and winner of many plaudits and awards) felt really rather flat after Ms Gabetta's performance. Her CD captures much of what was special 'live' in my opinion.

I think this was originally the soundtrack to Meeting Venus. It's a shame they didn't record the whole opera, as Kiri Te Kanawa is lovely in Elisabeth's two solos. There is also the briefest glimpse of Waltraud Meier as Venus in the finale. I'm not sure if she recorded the role complete elsewhere.

The 2nd reminds me a lot of Shostakovich's 2nd cello concerto (not a bad thing at all!) but the 1st is a joyous romp with Russian folk tunes. Great fun!

The link either asks me to sign in via Facebook ( which I don't use ) or sign in via my email address Jerry , which is a bit of a faff TBH . I don't need to sign in to Spotify on my server , I just click on the icon on my desktop and up it comes . I then just key in the name(s) of the artist and I can usually easily find the album you are linking to . I find it much easier that way . Anyway , I'm getting a bit more of an education regarding all things classical on this thread , and I've been thoroughly enjoying the process . Keep up the good work :D

I remember , when I was a little boy , sitting on the floor in my grans house listening to Scheherazade by Rimsky Korsakov on her old radiogram . IIRC it was a 78 RPM recording ( showing my age now :) ) . I would sit there for hours playing it over and over . I found this music totally spellbinding and still do today :D

I did a fair-sized comparison of many of the piano versions of this, Pollini-Barenboim-Woodward-Larsen-Gould-Aimard-Jando & others - and Richter won, with Jando 2nd place. Not what I was expecting!

This is a truly stunning recording.
The music is approaching the overall quality of JS Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin.
The sound quality is staggeringly good - a solo violin, superbly captured in a reverberant acoustic. Jaw dropping.
The playing is top rate.
You may have gathered that I quite like this album. :)

Knoxville is a mighty fine work - for soprano and orchestra. Serenely beautiful at the opening and close, kind of jazzy in the middle!

Interesting.
I marginally prefer Bernstein's vocal soloists, the ladies are a bit shrill on the high notes in the Fricsay.
A bit more pep in the 2nd mvt from Bernstein.
But Fricsay marginally preferred for the overall grandeur of the occasion and a more naturally flowing Adagio.
The mvt timings are remarkably similar.
Good to have both, though. :)
Less tape hiss than the Fricsay.

I'm gonna nail this bugger and get to the heart of the music.
Previously I'd quite liked the sound of Bax's symphonies but had never found much to get a hold of in terms of structure and development.
All quite interesting in a moment to moment kind of way, but no real journey as in, for example, a Beethoven or Shostakovich symphony.

Well, I failed. :(
Even after 9 repetitions it still has not given up its musical secrets. Maybe it just doesn't have any.
Actually, progress has been made - I'm even more appreciative now of its moment to moment impressiveness. And am more likely than before to play Bax's music again. So I guess that's a win. :)

And my preference for the 2 recordings used is proportional to the size of the above images. The Chandos is more dynamic and exciting.

Méditations sur le mystère de la Sainte Trinité . All was going well until I hit the buffers of the 4th mvt - and it's the usual Messiaen weird-shit music that puts me off most of his output. But it's only a few minutes long and then we're back to interesting/enjoyable music again.

I do like his interpretations. A bit lightweight, but well paced and brimming with delicate orchestral detail. Far from the only view on these works, and Venzago has come in for some critical stick, but I enjoy it. The 4th doesn't quite work - it really does need a bit more grandeur, imo, and the playing is a bit scrappy, too, but the slow mvt of the 7th is particularly wonderful.

Quite an interesting performance, superbly recorded.
There's an overwhelming sense of gentle melancholy - well, more a lightly whistful sadness - interesting in a way but for me it doesn't sustain itself over the symphony's length. Quite an exciting allegro and end of finale, though.
I prefer the more overt sense of tense brooding grief in the long quiet sections from Neeme Jarvi on Chandos. That's a Desert Island Disc for me.

It's all about colour, mood and incident for me. It makes me feel quite different from, say, Beethoven or Rachmaninov (that seems blindingly obvious as I type it but I guess you know what I mean). I suppose it's the lack of 'melody' in a conventional sense and the unexpected and unsettling shifts that I enjoy/appreciate. Not something I turn to very often, but I do find it rewarding when I take the time to listen. I was 'in the zone' today after listening to the War Requiem.

Writing that little paragraph makes me want to revisit Schoenberg's Erwartung...

Spinning one of my favourite Christmas confections. A mostly quiet affair, with Jessye and a variety of choirs with minimal accompaniment. Beautifully recorded, so it's a double treat to bring it out. One track, with mixed choir 'Puer natus in Bethlehem' has a kind of chant-like feeling and expands thrillingly at the climaxes. (I do like religious music for an old heathen!)

I've had to run an ethernet cable to the Oppo to tackle the glitches and freezes. Our rural broadband just about coped. It glitched a few times towards the end. We managed an hour in HD with no problems, then the freezes started. I switched to SD and you could see the picture blocking up every so often. The internet's not been good here all day, though, so maybe not a fair trial.

Although this is available as an MP3 Download,interested purchasers will have to resort to amazon marketplace to locate a copy of the CD. This is nothing short of criminal, as it is the best recording of this work bar none! It crept under the radar so to speak, as it was released just when the CD market was going into decline, and catalogue shelf life became short lived. I was one of the lucky purchasers on its initial release, but I only found it by accident!
Ashkenazy's transition from pianist to conductor has not been an outright success-I did not like his Cleveland Strauss series at all, and similarly much of his RPO output was frankly dull. However, his earlier recordings with the Concertgebouw and the Philharmonia were often superb, and I aprroached this CD with optimism-which proved to be totally justified. For this recording, Decca used the same tactic as they did with the Concertgebouw-they removed the seating and recorded the orchestra in the body of the hall. The St.Petersburg Philharmonie, being a wood-lined hall, was notorious for its acoustic difficulties during recordings-the resultant sound was usually very dry, as typified by the series of recordings RCA made there with Temirkanov. There has been millions spent on improving acoustics in the last couple of years, but Decca solved the problem perfectly.
There is simply no other recording of this work that has the weight of tone, strings AND brass, power of percussion and plangency of woodwind-it is stunning! They used to advertises discs as "Sonic Spectaculars"-and this is certainly one. Not even the Gergiev or The RCO Jansons can match it for sheer visceral impact. Conversely, the SPPO strings have never sounded so radiant, shining beautifully in the upper register and deeply resonant in the lower. The Dynamic range is very wide, with stunning contrast between pp and ff.
Of course, none of this would matter if the performance were not persuasive, and I am happy to report that I prefer as a performance only the recent Temirkanov live recording with this same orchestra in Geneva, but by a hairs's breadth, and it far exceeds the likes of Bernstein and Gergiev.
Ashenkazy finds the perfect tempo for the first movement, takes a strict classical approach for the second, a touch slower than some with quite a staccato rhythm, the third is searing and he really gives the orchestra its head at the tempo increase, and the fourth is as triumphant and uplifting as it needs to be, with cataclysmic percussion at the raucous climax. An absolute triumph as a performance and a recording-just stunning (a word I use too often but fully justified in this case!)
There is a fascinating vignette as an extra-the first track features a 40-odd second extract of the broadcast made by Shostakovich before the first performance-it doesn't illuminate the work , but gives this St.Petersburg recording an extra poignancy!
All admirers-nay LOVERS-of this great work should make every attempt to obtain this recording, and there should be a concerted campaign to have it reissued, even if at full price. It is without doubt the finest recording, and the performance is superb and ranks with best. Totally and unreservedly recommended!10 Stars

Fancied a Dvorak violin concerto yesterday, not something that gets played chez-Jerry very much. Loads of modern versions! - sampled a few, then settled on Vengerov. He makes much more of it than most, imo.

Weird avantgarde shit is happily absent, Hillborg seems comfortable with tonality, just it's of the 21stC kind - lots of interesting things going on, very varied. Long lines - he has an attention span longer than many composers seem to have these days.
Consider me a bit of a Hillborg fanboy. :)

The opening track is remarkably like the start of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. It must be intentional.
... the problem is that it lasts for nearly half an hour. IgorS knew that he had to move on after a few minutes. OK, to be fair, there is some development and variety, and things do hot up after 20 minutes. Some tonalities and glissandi are very like Gloria Coates' music (which is a good thing!).

Franz Clement wrote his violin concerto a year before Beethoven wrote his own, and he commissioned and was the soloist in the 1st performance of the Beethoven concerto.
I've listened to the Clement concerto 3 times now, and each time it sounds increasingly like Beethoven just copied it and extended the ideas / emboldened it to create his own concerto! Astonishingly alike in places. Yup, plagiarism was alive and well back then, and Beethoven was not above a bit of borrowing. :eek:

Beethoven piano sonatas - I had a yearning for a great Waldstein.
I sampled quite a few - Brendel (x2), Kempff, Guy, Pollini, Barenboim ... nah, they all messed it about. Smoothing over the notes and distorting the rhythms. :(
Then I tried Jando on Naxos.

He nails it for me - an almost staccato-like precision of playing and a steady hand on the pacing and, bingo - somehow the precise playing turns into a fluidity of line that eludes other, 'greater' players. Soulful and exciting by turns.
I then played the sonatas 1 to 5 in Jando's set as well. :thumbsup: Superb.

Arthur Rubinstein may have had the sexual morality (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Rubinstein#Marriage_and_family) of an alley cat on heat, but he was certainly a fine pianist.

Maybe it's nostalgia, as this double LP album was one of my very first LP purchases over 40 years ago, but I haven't heard the Brahms concertos played as well as this before or since.

Very light on its feet and superbly articulated.
Very transparent, detailed and dynamic recording, too.
