Yes, this sounds promising.

Maybe a French conductor and French orchestra playing French music was just too French for me. :)
Whereas a German conductor with a Swedish orchestra makes French music more palatable for me. :mental:

I have The Blue Notebooks on Vinyl and "On the Nature of Daylight" is an incredibly beautiful piece - almost saccharine?

[I really enjoyed Arrival and am quite a fan of the director. Hairs on the back of my neck stood on end when the film's central idea was made apparent!].

He did! The Gloucester Service at evensong in Gloucester Cathedral is a wonderful thing and something I haven't done in a few years now - I believe I missed it a few weeks ago.

First Howells I heard was the Hymnus Paradisi (on R3 in 1990 - it left quite an impression!). Ever since I'd wanted to hear the piece at the 3 Choirs festival and was lucky enough to see it at Worcester this year (along with some Finzi and RVW I think). For me, it just wasn't the right venue though and the soloists were completely lost. His church services though...

I must have a couple of dozen listens under my belt now and it's become one of my favourite symphonies.

I can't listen to it now as the record is up north, but the Concertino for Harpsichord and Strings by Walter Leigh is a delightful piece. Bumped into Pinnock in the gents' before a concert near Tisbury on the Wilts/Dorset border - about an hour's and a bit's thrash down the M3/303 - back about 18 months ago. Bit of a shock. (He's tiny!).

Was a wonderful gig, he's patron of the local music society there and its related charity that makes sure gifted young musicians can play on decent instruments. Wonderful solo baroque harpsichord concert mainly of stuff from the wonderful 'Journey' CD that he'd just recorded but not sure if it had been released yet.

Was also at his 70th birthday concert at the Wigmore last December (was it really a year ago?). Strange mix of baroque and modern orchestral. To be honest I can't fathom why someone with his talents in the early music area would bother with the modern orchestral stuff - half the concert was given over to a mini chamber orchestra version of Mahler's Symphony No4, with youth orchestra players.

A fair chunk of the audience got up and left at half-time - that seemed rude to me we, stayed and enjoyed it but I must say the baroque stuff was by far the more accomplished in terms of performance - I couldn't help but have the feeling that many of the people who hung about were family members of the young orchestral players.

I'm going to have to listen to more "younger ensembles"!

Gardiner's Fairy Queen was one of my first introductions to Purcell - that and the Tony Palmer film "England, My England" from 1995 that Gardiner did the music for too - so I'm always going to hold a bit of a candle for this recording.

I listened to a lot of Bach cantatas a few years ago (still enjoy them) and compared a lot of the recordings. Though Herreweghe was usually my preference, I often felt that Gardiner's live cycle came out very well - sounded full of life when compared to others (Suzuki for example).

I'm interested to hear suggestions for alternatives if you have them?

Far from it though a little goes a long way ... I think Gould's idiosyncratic approach has its merits and certainly its fans, it's brought a lot of people to this music who might otherwise have never had it come up on their radar, leading them on to explore further.

What I meant was that it's the opposite of Gould's dry, intellectual (though still passionate) presentation, it's a big, bold sound-scapey performance (as indeed is the other one that Jerry found - I hadn't been aware of that) where unlike in Gould's version, it's impossible to be conscious of ever note, just as you can't be in a piece of Chopin or Liszt.

I first heard this in a record, CD and new-agey tat shop in a small town in the Nordheide south of Hamburg. The aria came on and I set myself a task to see if I could figure out whose it was. When the first variation came on I was completely flummoxed by all the extra notes, then captivated, and I just had to come home with a copy (in fact, the CD that had been playing as they only had the one).

Yes, I do know what you mean.
But once past the tediously thumping 1st movement it gets a fair bit more interesting. Not sure I'd wheel it out more than once every year or two.

The best thing about the recording, though, is the conductor Andrey Boreyko - he has done some superb Shostakovich symphony recordings! No. 4 is a bit of a revelation and no. 6 is possibly the best I have heard. A bit wasted on Gorecki, really. :)

Boult also is excellent - but it's an old stereo recording and there is noticeable tape hiss when played at the volume level it deserves.
He seems to dig out and articulate more musical detail and dynamic precision than most anyone else.

Seems that Hoffer mainly does compositions for films and teevee. He should do more concertos and other standard works. Hopefully he is still composing as he is now getting on (b 1934).

Oryx did you say? Bit of a boutique label even back in the day but I've always been a fan .. top quality pressings and a decent recording technique, usually good at capturing the acoustic, though some of the Baroque instrumental stuff hasn't worn that well (mic'd a bit close especially flutes - common at the time) and you can hear a bit of wow sometimes from the tape.

Inspired me to pull out and spin a few old favourites. In each case the instrument is as much a star as the performer.

First a very young (he's still going!) Lionel Rogg, recording some Bach organ music at his home in Geneva in 1967, on a pedal harpsichord. These were used for practice in the baroque period, when it could be difficult to corral a gang of people to push the bellows while your hammered away. Bach owned two, according to his will though there is some discussion as to exactly what they were - pedal harpsichords, or pedal clavichords. The latter are known also to have existed and both have been recreated (to varying degrees of authenticity) in modern times. (I've read it argued that some of the 'simple' organ music - the stuff all we would-be organists learned on - that we know was written for Bach's eldest son, WF - is idiomatic to the pedal harpsichord rather than organ, and pulling it out the other week and looking at it, that could be correct).

The Wittmayer instrument Rogg plays here is very 'revival' - a hefty modern 'concert' instrument most likely from the 1950s, but reminiscent of the sort of monster Wanda Landowska would have been playing in the 1930s - and likely bears little resemblance to anything Bach would have owned in the 18th century, Nevertheless he plays some really spirited (and colourful - it has all sorts of stop combinations) Buxtehude on it .. it's a really engrossing and engaging record.

Rogg also made another harpsichord record for Oryx, which is a bit of a contrast, this is on an original 1730 Ruckers harpsichord from the Netherlands (interestingly, Trevor Pinnock's most recent recording also uses a surviving Ruckers). The tone is rather different - more subtle, and there's no pedalboard - also there's no pyrotechnics in terms of stop swapping. It therefore requires what we see much more in modern harpsichord playing which is a greater use of timing, phrasing and ornamentation to bring light and shade to the performance. And Rogg - an organist really rather than a harpsichordist - does lift his game and is again very fun and musical though in a modern context he would lose a few marks for dodgy ornamentation! Nice combination of tracks - from Buxtehude, Muffat (a Buxtehude contemporary), George Boehm (organist at Luneburg when Bach was a pupil at the choir school) and older piece by the Dutch master Sweenlinck and German contemporary Froberger.

A third Oryx harpsichord + organ record features James Danby playing pedal harpsichord on one side (a Feldberg - like the Wittmayer, a giant modern concert-type harpsichord, but made in Sevenoaks, Kent in the early 60s (As it happens, my little Spinet is also a Feldberg but it seems to be rather more authentic in its pattern) and organ on the other. Danby's instrument I think sounds less authentic than Rogg's and he's less adventurous with the stops, but the Trio Sonata IV from the Klavierubung (again written for WF, but by which time he was a master performer - this is seriously difficult music to play) sounds wondrous on the pedal harpsichord, and again I wonder whether it wasn't conceived, written, polished and played on that instrument initially.

Have to confess the only Estonian composer I knew of was Arvo Pärt - and I'm not especially keen on his output, despite his numerous change of musical style. So this disc has given me the opportunity to investigate some other Estonian composers of the 20th Century.

OK so I got the 24/192 download of the new Nelsons Bruckner 4.... Hmmm, Jerry I'm going to have to disagree!
The performance is quite good but not great, doesn't come close to Bohm or Abbado IMO. But the sound..... murky and too distant IMO. Decca's recording of the Gewandhaus with Riccardo Chailly were better defined but suffered the same problems in the bass, especially over-reverberant timpani which swamp everything else.

For reference I looked out the live recordings Herbert Blomstedt made of the Bruckner symphonies with Leipzig Gewandhaus that were issued on SACD about 10 years ago, on the orchestra's own label (looks like they are currently unavailable). Had a listen to the 5th from that series.... wow, that's how to record in the Gewandhaus!

Hmm, OK.
I'm having another listen, this time on Audiolab MDAC / Fostex TH600 headphones.

The pacing of the opening horn call, OK, a bit slow, but glorious! (Surely one of the most wonderful openings of any symphony - echoing through the Austrian Alps!).
Then Nelsons picks up the pace nicely.
The ebb and flow of pacing is just spot on for me. I can't fault it.
There are a hundred, a thousand, ways to successfully play this music, but this is one of them imo.

Yes, OK, the bass is a bit thick sounding - the cellos and double basses more of a whoom than a well defined rasp.
The brass, though, is nicely caught.
The acoustic space as recorded is a bit reverberant, but that is just fine & dandy imo for this music with Nelsons' chosen pacing. I don't hear it as murky.
But hell, listen to the music!!

I've fallen in love with the music all over again. I remain enthused. :)

My main issue is with the sound, I can't really hear enough of the performance, only enough to know its quite good. Nelsons is very capable, I really enjoyed his Boston Symphony Brahms set, especially 1st & 4th - and it has fantastic SQ.

Hans Rott's symphony.
An early period work, he wasn't to have a middle period or a late one. He died age 26 in a mental institution.

Brahms can't have helped - he was the leader of the other side of the musical politics of the time and, on seeing the manuscript for the first movement of the symphony, informed Rott that he had no musical talent and should change his career. Bruckner was a great supporter, though.

I would love to know if the Lebeque sisters ever recorded the Goldberg Variations for two pianos.
