Karajan's has always been my fave Tchaik 4.
Superbly paced and played, and just beautiful and bloody exciting by turns!
The orchestral virtuosity in the finale is staggering.

On sunday night, Del and I were watching the last night of the Proms, on BBC2, and I was stunned by his amazing voice! :eek:

However, I know a lot of classical music lovers aren't much into opera (my Italian genes encourage me to enjoy aspects of it), but for me right now Florez is as good as anyone, and unlike some opera singers, can also turn his hand to 'pop music'.

I've just ordered a few of his albums from Amazon :)

Lol - will do. I totally get why it's not your thang, as Tenor Arias are somewhat of an acquired taste. It's probably not most people's thang here.

However, I have it 'in me', as it were, to love this sort of music, as my parents played a lot of Caruso, Mario Lanza, Pavarotti, etc, at home when I was a kid (it's an Italian thing), and some of it stuck, so I occasionally enjoy listening to that stuff, along with the likes of Andrea Bocelli and Katherine Jenkins.

Therefore, because Florez does that type of music so well, and also sings some 'Italian classics', on a separate album, that's what attracted me to it :)

The Fazil Say, however, does look rather interesting!

This is a lovely album of Bach transcriptions for a small chamber ensemble - violin, viola, cello and 1 or 2 pianos.
The first 2 chorale transcriptions, in particular, are heart-tuggingly beautiful and the mighty Passacaglia & Fugue is given a magical performance.

The last day or so has been a rediscovery of the music of contemporary Estonian composer Vasks.

Starting with the ethereal Violin concerto and then the rather more violent 2nd symphony.

Then moving on to the amazingly interesting world of his string quartets. It's interesting to hear him move from the 'traditional' 20th century avantgarde musical world of his 1st quartet, to him fully discovering his own voice by the 3rd quartet.

To follow in from the 'box set' of Swedish string quartets mentioned in post #3026, here's an equally fascinating extended album of Finnish chamber music.
The Kuula piano trio makes an excellent start to a very varied and interesting set of works, over 6 hours long in total.

Many Finnish composers are there, most of them previously unknown to me!
It's going to be fascinating following the Spotify links on the ones that take my fancy to see what other recordings there are of their works. :)

No worries, shame. You should think about getting Sky in at some point, as there are some wonderful classical performances available, which both visually and sonically (through a good system) are stunning! :cool:

For anyone who's into not just classical music, but jazz and all sorts of other stuff (e.g right now there's a classic jazz performance on from Dexter Gordon, Live in '63 and '64), and who plays their Sky box through their system and enjoys watching the artist perform whilst listening to the music, I'd thoroughly recommend Sky Arts HD on Channel 121 :thumbsup:

With an Android TV, even some of the stuff on YouTube can be great!

The string symphony and concerto are good and easily accessible.
The organ concerto is a bit of a harder nut to crack. But I'm getting there, and I think the perseverance is worthwhile. It doesn't have the great tunes of Saint-Saens organ symphony, but hell, tunes aren't everything. :)

I have been playing symphonies 1 & 2 by Robert Hermann quite a bit recently - for some reason they have struck a melodic chord with me.
They are rapidly growing in stature as fas as I am concerned - very fine and enjoyable works indeed.

I really enjoyed Svetlanov in this. Incisive, exciting - exaggerated, jumpy? - yes, sure. A very Soviet Era performance full of incisive modern dance rhythms and squealing trumpets. Not everyone's cuppa, for sure, but I loved it for being different from the normal run of Brahms interpretations.

Yehudi Menuhin - as conductor. *Has blown me away over the last few days.

His Vaughan Williams 5th symphony has long been my favourite recording of that masterwork, but somehow I'd never gotten around to his other recordings as conductor.

His Elgar 1s symphony has gone to the top of my preferences, and by no small margin.

His Beethoven 9th symphony is utterly masterful, as is his 2nd. * The others will be addressed soon.

His Mozart symphonies (38 & 39) are superb. *His 40 and 41 are on my Spotify playlist.

What a shame he wasted so many years fighting technical issues with his violin playing! *He should have just got on with his conducting.

I guess his style can be called pure, clean and lean. *No added schmaltzy sentiment, just the music superbly paced and constructed.

Thierry Lancino's Requiem.

HUGE piece in terms of musical forces.
It gets off to an unfortunate start. 7 interminable minutes of the mezzo soloist declaiming about something or other. Sheesh, get on with it woman. She seems quite upset at times.
Ah, 2nd mvt and we are heavily influenced by Ligeti - this is more like it!

The Dies Irae certainly lets loose.

Those averse to 20thC avantgarde tonalities are hereby warned. :D

20thC French choral, though, folks - Faure - Durufle - I know how much you love it. ;)

For me, it's enjoyable enough taken 2 or 3 mvts at a time. The entire 70 minutes or so is a bit of a stretch at a single sitting.

It really works well for me - astonishingly well played by both viola soloist and orchestra as well.

Pretty good. I think I prefer the Qobuz viewer and Tidal have been quite responsive in a flurry of emails to my complaints about metadata (can no-one really have complained before?) ... I have all three trial subsciptions running at once at the moment. Spotify seems to be pretty good for classical .. frustratingly a couple of the albums I've gone to buy having heard them online seem to be unavailable on CD.

Bruckner's fourth was performed at the very first orchestral concert I went to, when I was about 14 (1975 or so) at the Aberdeen Music Halls. The SNO (as it then was) used to play Aberdeen on a Thursday, Edinburgh on a Friday, and Glasgow on a Saturday. As well as piano and organ, at the time I was a French Horn player (I did my Scottish O Grade on the horn, not piano). I was utterly awestruck by the brass section in the Bruckner. Kurt Sanderling conducting.

Also on the programme was the Mendelssohn violin concerto though I can't remember who the soloist was.

It has its place Jerry but at heart I'm a renaissance/baroque/classical chamber music and vocal junkie. There's not a huge amount after 1850 that floats my boat though an exception would be a good Bruckner or Mahler symphony.

Bream playing Giuliani and Malcolm Arnold ... the Giuliani is lovely. Malcolm Arnold less so. I recall his Clarinet Concerto clearing out a prom concert in Glasgow once - good night for the bar that must have been. They came back after the interval.

I'm not a great fan of most of Benjamin Britten's mature works, but those he composed as a young chap are often brilliant!
This album of his oboe-related works from his youth is pretty damn marvellous imo. Tuneful but incisive and exciting, as well as beautifully soulful when appropriate.

Schoeck - I've heard of him but not come across his music before.

Playing now and on first listen it's not really my kind of thing - he sort of meanders on without seeming to go anywhere. Maybe familiarity would disclose some structure to it all. Reminds me a bit of the music of Reger, which I dislike! An English equivalent would be Moeran or Delius, of whom devotees abound but I am not one of them. :scratch:

Recordings of Hindemith's 'Marienleben' [Op.27] are not so plentiful, the best performance is a rather poor live recording of Erna Berger (sop.) and Gerhard Puchelt (p.) made in Berlin on December the 12th, 1953. The bloke responsible for setting the recording levels ought ought have been put up against a wall and disposed of by firing squad for crimes against culture and my ears.

My TDA 1534 NOS DAC with its rolled off highs is out on loan, but this is just the kind of recording where it earns its keep.

I'm off and on with Hindemith's stuff, Jerry, but I do love this cycle and another by him called 'Sechs Lieder Nach Gedichten von Freidrich Hölderlin'. I have a version sung by Peter Schreier on Eterna records. Hindemith scored six of the Marienleben for orchestra too.
