A superb set of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas.
The last 4 - opp 106 & 109-111 - are especially tumultuous, wonderful.
Interesting that the relatively unknown Maria Grinberg was chosen by Russia's state label, Melodiya, as their one and only (as far as I can make out) complete set - when you think of the roster of astonishing Russian pianists they could have called on.
But listen, and you'll hear why!
Staggering performances in clear if slightly steely sound. But the steeliness may well lie in the strength of her fingers!

Not sure if you can get access without a subscription but it was an interesting piece:
https://www.spectator.co.uk/2019/09/why-did-the-soviets-not-want-us-to-know-about-the-pianist-maria-grinberg/
Why did the Soviets not want us to know about the pianist Maria Grinberg?
She was one of only four women to record the complete Beethoven piano sonatas but the state kept her in obscurity
Only four women pianists have recorded complete cycles of the Beethoven piano sonatas: Maria Grinberg, Annie Fischer, H. J. Lim and Mari Kodama. I’ve written before about the chain-smoking ‘Ashtray Annie’ Fischer: she was a true poet of the piano and her Beethoven sonatas are remarkably penetrating — as, alas, is the sound of her beaten-up Bösendorfer. Lim produced her cycle in a hurry when she was just 24; it’s engaging but breathless. Kodama’s set, just completed, is a bit polite.
Which leaves Maria Grinberg (1908–78), whose recordings remain just where the Soviet authorities wanted them. In obscurity. That is shameful — and not because she was the first woman and the first Russian to record all the sonatas. (In those days Jews from Odessa in Ukraine counted as Russians.) This is an unforgettable cycle. Unforgettable, that is, in the unlikely event that you’ve heard it.
Grinberg’s insights linger in the mind even if you don’t particularly like what she’s doing. In the finale of the Moonlight, for example, the chords at the top of the arpeggios would drown out a tractor factory. But elsewhere in the movement the treble melts away to reveal the ingenuity below the stave.
That’s a Grinberg hallmark. She balances voices to shift the listener’s perspective. I kept hearing dotted rhythms and crossed hands that I’d failed to pick up in other performances. The lower octaves ring out with unusual clarity. Perhaps that’s something to do with the fact that, as a young woman, Grinberg lost her state-funded job as a pianist and worked as an orchestral timpanist.
No one communicated better the polyphonic sweetness of late Beethoven. Listen to the mini-motet that precedes the final storm in the fugue of the Hammerklavier. Grinberg plays it with glowing serenity; for a moment we could be in the Sistine Chapel.
Why is she forgotten? Her problem wasn’t just that she was Jewish but, from the point of view of the authorities, that she was the wrong sort of Jew. Her father and husband had been executed by Stalin as enemies of the state. The shadow never lifted.
Admittedly, there was really no such thing as the right sort of Jew in the Soviet Union. If Jews had to be anything, then the authorities were reasonably happy for them to be musicians. Like the Nazis, the Soviets used top-flight orchestras as tools of propaganda. Unlike them, they couldn’t maintain standards of performance without Jews.
Nearly half the professional musicians in Russia were Jewish, as were an even higher proportion of virtuoso soloists, including the violinists David Oistrakh and Leonid Kogan, the pianists Emil Gilels and Lazar Berman and the cellist Daniil Shafran. When they travelled abroad they were watched by the KGB. (Well, maybe not Kogan: as Norman Lebrecht revealed in The Spectator, but his Wiki entry fails to mention, he was a Soviet spook who kept tabs on his brother-in-law Gilels.)
The Kremlin could never forget that it had lost Vladimir Horowitz and Jascha Heifetz, both Russian Jews who dazzled from the United States. When Berman’s international career was at its height, he was suddenly banished to the provinces (but he defected anyway). Even the mighty Gilels was kept at home if the Soviet Union was sulking about what it always called ‘Israeli aggression’.
The model Jewish virtuoso left Russia to win a big international competition, coming straight back after attracting headlines that mentioned his citizenship but not his background. Few things annoyed the Soviets more than references to Russian-Jewish identity; every other ethnic group was expected to parade its musical heritage, but Jews did so at their peril. No klezmer encores, please, and no Hebrew melodies in compositions. The non-Jewish Shostakovich was playing with fire when he ignored Russian folk traditions and returned obsessively to melancholy Jewish ones.
This ridiculous cat-and-mouse game was played at every level, though with varying degrees of cruelty. Sometimes the logic was hard to follow, and especially so in the case of Maria Grinberg.
Her historic Beethoven LPs were produced by the state label Melodiya, yet when they appeared in 1970 the Soviet press wrote not a word abut them. Towards the end of her life she was allowed to give a handful of concerts in the Netherlands, but that was it. When she died, aged 69, the authorities couldn’t decide whether she should be honoured or ignored. They settled for a mixture of both.
Perhaps her mistake was failing to criticise Israel, which several more celebrated Jewish musicians were arm-twisted into doing. On the contrary: in 1967, when ‘aggressive’ Israel humiliated its Soviet-allied neighbours, Maria Israelyevna Grinberg took to introducing herself as ‘Maria Aggressorovna’.
Not until 2012 did Melodiya get round to issuing Grinberg’s Beethoven sonatas as a CD boxed set. It has already disappeared from Amazon. Some things don’t change. Fortunately they found their way on to Spotify, and many other recordings — including an exultant Brahms First Piano Concerto — have surfaced on YouTube. Is it too much to hope that the internet will finally lift her out of the shadows?

A very fine, if slow, performance of one of my favourite piano pieces as well - Bach Partita #2.

Just for you Jerry I dug out the set notes and edited the entry above. I purchased 4 boxes from the set that were at a local Hospiscare, they were published by TIME LIFE and so far I have found all the recordings to be very good. The records are very quiet and it seems care was taken when putting the collection together.

It is a long time since I last listened to this work, probably 3 or 4 years, but each time I find it invigorating. I was introduced to it as a boy of 10 or 11 by my father, along with the 5th, both of which I found very impressive although I didn't really appreciate just how great they are, it was his attempt at trying to get me to stop listening to Jimi Hendrix.
To this day I still think it is hard to beat a Beethoven Symphony, although I do like other composers.
I was lucky enough to find this set in a charity shop and they are all mint.

I came across violinist Zilliacus via a Bach violin search, and was bowled over by her solo Bach playing.
... unfortunately done in collaboration with a singer which rather f*cks up the Chaconne. The rest is great though.

I've been listening to some of these primarily today, in fact Divertimento No. 15 In B Flat Major, K. 287, A1 Allegro & Tema Con Variazioni: Andante Grazioso at least 5 times trying to hear the impact of different mains cable on my amp, I have been lent some from a dealer, quite interesting if somewhat confusing. I think I now know this piece of music backwards, although it always has been a favourite.
Also I decided to try out my Ortofon Rondo Blue cartridge in the Pro-Ject Signature 10, it is some time since I had listened to it. I mated it to a Timepiece ebony head shell and took about 40 minutes setting it up in the arm, not hard just fiddly. So on went the same tracks and I was rather surprised at how good the Rondo performs compared to the Benz Micro LP-S. You would expect a big difference, but not really, its all there and is actually very nicely presented, perhaps using the Timepiece with the Rondo helps it to shine. I would say that certain detail and nuances are lost when compared to the the LP-S, but having said that the Rondo Blue gives a very relaxing and listenable rendition.
I have now put on below as I am quite enjoying my Mozart today.
Divertimento No. 17 In D Major, K. 334
Conductor – Neville Marriner*
Orchestra – The Academy Of St. Martin-in-the-Fields
C1 Allegro 9:36
C2 Tema Con Variazioni: Andante 9:14
C3 Menuetto 4:20
C4 Adagio 6:31
D1 Menuetto 6:26
D2 Rondo: Allegro 9:15
By the way if any of you come across any of these sets at a good price then snap them up if they are in good condition, the recordings are extremely good IMO, I was very lucky and purchased 4 sets for £20, I should have had the other 4 as well.

I have posted this before, but thought I would again and add a few comments, as I put it on quite often.
It is a stunning soundtrack and is interesting being orchestral primarily, some of the music was recorded and then deliberately reversed to create intensity/sharpness, the composer has also recorded sounds from all sorts of items, like a coffee grinder and incorporated it to get a feeling. Parts of it are very deep and dark, but at the same time there are some beautiful orchestrations all creating pictures and intensity with the music. I would recommend a listen even if you don't like or know the film.

Got to ask why most of the posts on this thread seem to be about charity shop vinyl? There is a vastly bigger repertoire available out there in digital recordings on disc, downloads or streaming. Yes there are some fantastic recordings available on vinyl if you are lucky enough to get a copy free of defects - I've got a lot of it myself - but what's available really is pretty much limited to select "great performers" of the past in a very narrow core repertoire. There is so much more available in classical music. And vinyl is such a hit-or-miss format for classical - mostly miss as surface noise is such a bummer.
Currently listening to:

The piano conccerto is a rather more serious and dramatic affair. The symphony starts the same way for its 1st and 2nd mvts, but then starts to lighten up ending in a glorious 4th mvt peroration full of orchestral splendour.
The slow movements throughout are beautiful and heartfelt.
This is one of my favourite albums.
I wish Ronald Corp would write a violin concerto, I'd imagine that would be quite something.

Some of those Brilliant classics are high quality reissues while others are more variable. This one looks like a potential gem.
It was. Great music (true classics) Brilliantly recorded [no pun intended]. ADD on the disc, so shows an analogue source:)

This reminded me of the music used in Space Odyssey 2001 when they are at the Obolisque on the moon, is it from the same composer?

Recomposed by Max Richter - The Four Seasons
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/81OSuHzIsiL._AC_SL1500_.jpg
DGG/Decca (2012)
Antonio Vivaldi wrote the four violin concertos known as Le quattro stagioni. Today The Four Seasons may be the most widely heard piece of classical music ever composed. Max Richter, the award-winning British composer who has written concert music, film scores, and a series of acclaimed solo albums, has rewritten The Four Seasons with stunning results. Richter’s co-conspirators on Vivaldi Recomposed are Daniel Hope, the British violinist; the German conductor André de Ridder; and the Konzerthaus Kammerorchester Berlin.
This is a wonderful 'recomposition' of Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'. It stands up there with the Drottingholm Consort's version (a straight reading but using original instruments), as well as the version on Decca Argo, by Neville Marriner and The Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

So having listened to Deep Purple in Concert with the Royal Philharmonic earlier today I realised that having tweaked and my cartridge and arm set up over the past 2 weeks my system is sounding rather wonderful. I seem to have hit that absolute sweet spot, it all sounds so natural and alive.
So encouraged I have gone back to listening to some classical, and this sounds gorgeous, I might just have to re-listen to my favourite pieces, which could take some time. :)
By the way I am no expert, but if you like Mozart and happen across these boxed sets in a charity shop and they are in good condition, just buy them, the quality of the recordings and vinyl is excellent IMO. I think there are 10 to the full Mozart set I have 5 of them. I should have purchased all of them a the time:doh:

Currently watching (and listening) to The Proms, live on the BBC, which is superb [through my AV system]. So glad that they managed it in some form this year!:)

Yes, the few I have seen have been good - Sony 4K TV with the audio via a Quad 520 135W amplifier into B&W DM2Aa speakers.
Usually I listen to the Proms via Radio 3 on my downstairs system: Quad FM4 tuner into a Mark Levinson preamp thence into either a pair of ML-2 or a pair of Quad 510 monoblocks feeding Quad 57s. The sound balance is impeccable, but fails to capture the sheer 'live' presence of being there; despite the appalling acoustics of the RAH.

So I am having a bit of a classical/CD fest. I thought I would start with some challenging music.
Both these pieces are challenging not only in composition but also in the context of what they are trying to express, Il Canto Sospeso literally means 'The Suspended Song', the notes state " the title is intentionally ambiguous, referring as it does to , to a song that is 'suspended' (in every sense) - in a way entirely commensurate with the situation depicted. The music is interspersed with readings from letters from resistance fighters to love ones who are about to be executed for standing up against tyranny and oppression they opposed. Musically "Nono and for other composers of his generation, serialism represented an attempt to replace traditional structural principles such as melody. harmony and rhythm with and abstract, retional organisation of pitches, note-vales and tone colours." Don't let this put you of, on my first listen I found the piece very hard to fathom, but after each listen I get more from it, the key I believe is to think of the feelings those oppressed as they go to their final fate. It is very moving in my opinion and sobering.
Mahler's - Kindertotenliedener (Songs on the Death of Children) is possibly a better known piece, this based on poems by Friedrich Rückert reflecting on the death of two of his children. I personally struggle with choral and opera but in this instance find the presentation and the vocal aspect extremely expressive and moving conveying the agony and despair of such loss very moving and expressive. maybe personal experience leads to this sense of loss.
I know these are rather sombre and sobering pieces but at the same time very moving, they certainly make you think, and if you have not experienced them I would give them a go. IMO the Live recordings, musical presentation and choral singing are exemplary. by the way I am not sure Romantic is the right style!

I'm a great believer in the use of period instruments as would have been used when the composition was made. So I can confirm that the Academy of Ancient Music, cond. Christopher Hogwood is another of my favourites (which I have, and should have cited it).
My love of period instruments extends to the works of Mozart, Hyden and Beethoven.
(At least you didn't cite the abysmal recording by Nigel Kennedy (though to be fair, it was his recording that re-awakened an appreciation in classical music amongst some of collegues at work.)
If you want to try something a bit different - have a listen to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recomposed_by_Max_Richter:_Vivaldi_%E2%80%93_The_F our_Seasons

Hmmm - "They do not merely play the score, they live it. Some may regard the performances as ‘theatrical’ and so they are, but they are acted with total commitment and in good style and taste – and why not?"
Not sure if I would like it; and at £25 I'm not going to try it anytime soon.

I have just listened to this rendition on QOBUZ and personally found it a very interesting one, I thought it might be worth describing what I felt even if not done that well. I was quite taken aback at times as if I was hearing parts of the music completely differently than before.
For example in the RV 269 "Spring": I Allegro the energy at times in the play is palpable, with huge contrasts
RV 269 "Spring": II. Largo the tonality of the instruments and how they are played to compliment each other is quite stunning.
RV 269 "Spring": III. Danza opening is quite stunning, and then it explodes with the dance.
RV 315 "Summer": I. Allegro non molto, there is a great feeling in the slower/quieter passages and great interplay, then the fast passages are just explosive.
RV 315 "Summer": II. Adagio e piano - Presto e forte - this takes on a very melancholic and nearly harsh feel, and then vibrato sections just take you by surprise, even though you know the piece.
RV 315 "Summer": III. Presto - the apparent and speed a ferocity of the playing generates the feeling of a race against time before the end of summer, there were sections interpreted in ways I had not heard before.
F Major, RV 293 "Autumn": I. Allegro had a great feeling of celebration at the start and then a feeling of finality which was conveyed by the rise and fall of instruments volumes and intensity of playing.
RV 297 "Winter": II. Largo: the paling of violin lines here seemed to hang in the air, extremely atmospheric and it just drew you in.
F Major, RV 293 "Autumn": II. Adagio molto: the playing conveyed a sense of foreboding and decay, a very sombre and ominous feeling at the beginning, you were just waiting for what came next, quite haunting
RV 293 "Autumn": III. Allegro: the contrast between lightness of playing and the heavier sounding sections was huge, at time the dance felling felt like it would stall and trip over itself, quite different to what I have heard before.
RV 297 "Winter": I. Allegro non molto: from the first few bars edge of the seats stuff, full of menace and intensity, stunning virtuoso playing and all together compliment each other beautifully.
RV 297 "Winter": II. Largo: Beautiful playing here conveying the relentless fall of rain drops, with wind whistling.
RV 297 "Winter": III. Allegro: an very immersive representation, it conjures the feeling of skating across ice at breakneck speed and teetering on the edge of catastrophe.
To sum up I rather enjoyed it, it is very well recorded and the players have obviously taken great pains to understand each aspect of the piece and conjure up as expressive representation as they can. Well worth a listen IMO, I certainly will be re-playing it.

Originally written for the lyra organizzatta, two of them, a bulky violin-like instrument, played by turning a crank, it was none other than a hurdy-hurdy with added features. the one Haydn wrote for in addition to its strings had a small set of minuture organ pipes/whistles blown by bellow actuated by the crank. Flute and Oboe replace the hardy-gurdys here. It seems the only reason Haydn wrote for this instrument was his patron Ferdinand IV os Naples played one and it was for him. The write up on the record sleeve about the instrument is quite interesting.
It rather good music whatever it was originally written for.

Good find BTW Adrian. :)No I love period instruments I can't bear hearing baroque music on modern instruments, especially with overuse of vibrato (which is almost any [emoji38]). Or classical for that matter, probably up to Haydn quartets or even Beethoven.
I'm not sure if it was the Four Seasons but I've got a couple of their recordings on BIS and they just don't sound right to me. Definitely at least one Vivaldi. I'll have a look when I'm up north next time.

I would imagine that like most here, I heard Beethoven played by 20th century orchestras using modern instruments; and very enjoyable they are. I particularly like Furtwangler's readings who was not 'hide bound' when it came to following the time markings. But they too use 'modern' instruments.
Orchestras were evolving in Beethoven's time with some instruments being little changed from the baroque style, but others starting to change to the modern style we have today. So I wondered what Beethoven's symphonies would sound like if played on 'period' instruments, and was delighted to find that John Eliot Gardiner had done such with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique.

This version is the Pan Classics release with the Czech Philharmonic under Mario Venzago. Yvonne Naef as Penthesilea. A great performance with a less than stellar capture.

and his Phos Hilarion done by the Gesualdo Six, conducted by composer.
Listening to this young composer's work. I like his writing but am underwhelmed by the execution of it on Choral Works. The use of female singers does not work for me here. The G6 are much better on his Phos Hilarion, but atrocious elsewhere on the CD Fading, also by Hyperion. It is difficult not feel that there has been a change in the way of choral work is approached. The G6 version of When David heard That Absalom Was Dead is the worst I've come across - they can't even enunciate properly and hang on to syllables in a slovenly manner, each singer also appears to be vying with his peers for preminence. It isn't all bad but enough of it is sufficiently distressing to elicit foul language and the use of the eject button.

It's a Decca ffrr (full frequency range recording), so is mono. All Decca stereo recordings are marked ffss (full frequency stereo sound).
Having 10" LPs in your collection makes you look like you are a serious record collector, but are a bit of a bugger to file away as they get lost between their bigger 12" neighbours. (;))

Ah, I see... Cool.
Doesn't bother me really, as I have around 200 mono albums in my collection, of various musical genres, and the best recorded ones sound superior, musically, than many stereo recordings. Among other examples, the early Beatles albums are a case in point - sonically they're much more dynamic and 'alive' than their later stereo counterparts.
As far as 10" records go, I've got around 50 (mostly classical), as apart from anything else, I think they're dinky and kinda cool:)

I have no idea of the racial composition of the Choir of Salisbury Cathedral. Looking at the names of the choristers it is not obvious if any of them are "people of colour" - but I don't buy my records on the basis of the race, colour, gender, or sexual orientation of the performers.
As to the 'Missa Luba', this is part of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria and Credo) performed in the style of a kasala, a song framework of the Ngandanajika (Kasai) of Congo. The Sanctus and Gloria are fashioned after 'The Song of Farewell' of the Kiluba, and the Agnus Dei is based on a song of the Bena Luba (Luluabourg).
The whole is performed by Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin, a choir with a percussion section, consisting of about 45 boys from 9 to 14 years old, and 15 teachers from the Kamina School in the Congo.
Perhaps I should destroy this too for the lack of inclusivity: no female performers, no white performers? Or as an exploitative expropriation of African culture?

Haydn: The Nelson Mass
A work originally composed in the paroxysm of fear felt at the dismal ascendancy of Napeoleon Bonaparte, the Missa in Angustiis (The Mass in Anguish), but one that would come to be forever associated with the noble life and exploits of the one of the greatest Englishmen ever to have lived, Horatio Lord Nelson.
As Haydn began to compose the mass he was unaware that Nelson, in excellent company, had dealt a decisive blow against the French at the Battle of the Nile [1798]. In the words of the popular ditty: '...sending French dreams of a realm in the East to the bottom of the salty sea...' Nelson would later go on to destroy the numerically superior combined fleets of France and her proxy state Spain at the Battle of Trafalgar [1805].

Quite right, not what I would have expected. Is this "jazzed up" in anyway or is it a legitimate performance of the work(s)? I realize Heir Mozart took liberties; but...

I've been listening to this on Qobuz for the past hour or so (and last night). Extremely good I think. SQ is excellent as is the music. Very open, clear and airy, allowing the "space" of the venue to shine through.
Highly recommended if you like Classical music.

Rather dark and sombre, in the Shosty tradition, but also very powerful and dramatic, and beautifully recorded, as usual on Decca:)
Marco.
Stunning imho this recording:

Interesting take on some early French music. Kind of like Jan Garbarek with the Hilliard Ensemble.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210601/d6b8647a23a81cbd5b3e77fe1a9af5c5.jpg

Not that it has anything to do with this album in particular, but I'm amazed at what these Klipsch RP-8000F's do for piano. Very convincing with proper body and dynamics.

IMO one of the best performances of the Four Seasons. :)

When I am not sure what to listen to classically then I seem to always pop this on, some lovely pieces and a beautiful performance in Salisbury Cathedral, well worth looking out, there a few CD copies on Discogs for not too much, I found it available to stream.

Looks interesting. I've seen Iona Brown perform a few times, but never conduct. Sadly I never will. :(
