Great to see Ahmad Jamal music coming up here a lot recently.
One of my favourites too.

Because of this thread, I’ve been re-visiting his music recently. Loving it.

The vibe is so relaxed, and his use of space is fantastic. Everyone else is cramming as many notes in as possible, and he plays as little as he can.

Check out this version of “Stompin at the Savoy” It an old old tune, which most here will have heard.
It has a kind of main idea which is kind of like question and answer.

On relistening I’ve only just realised how much he uses space.

The question goes ... TAAAAA... DA.

The answer goes ... DE DA- DDY DAH , DA - DAH ( i hope you know what i mean.)

La Vern Baker, once billed as little miss sharecropper, was a great singer and pretty successful in her day. One of her last discs for Atlantic was this tribute to the great Bessie Smith.

My son’s Scottish friend (and housemate) was taken under Joe Bonamassa’s wing after she interviewed him for her school when she was sixteen.

She has played with him a few times in the past (Google “Joe Bonammasa and Eilidh McKellar”) but eventually moved away from the blues genre and into her own indy thing with a band called Babyteeth.

Nothing but good words to say about Joe though, he’s a top guy and uses his greatness to pay forward to upcoming young musicians.

This is very different and is aptly named. I put it here as I think it is so out there that Jazz is more appropriate. It is strangely good, in an almost hypnotic way, several of Burning Star Core's albums have been compared to Soft Machine and have had favourable reviews. The driving force is Chih-Fu Spencer Yeh a violinist and uses it with various electronics to create sounds and also with other musicians and instruments.

Yeah I've the nkc one on cd. It's quite good although I agree the arrangements are a bit drab as is the presentation . Nat would have turned in his grave.

Yes, that sums up GP very well. I think he would be better perhaps singing Blues material. His voice is similar to that of the late Mississsippi John Hurt; not so much in the richness of tone, but in the sweetness and humanity of delivery.

I went to the Cinema last night with my lovely wife to see the Incredible New Aretha Franklin Documentary AMAZING GRACE

I can only say RUN do not Walk to see this film.
It's obviously an art-house film and on for a week or so maximum.
So sleep and you will miss it....

Without doubt he BEST music documentary I've seen. NO talking heads or commentary, just an uncut view into 2 live Gospel performances by The Queen herself with James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir.

An amazing treat into this world. Not a dry eye in the house when the lights came up!!
An utter joys experience.

Here is the recording from those 2 evenings of pure magic.

I went to the Cinema last night with my lovely wife to see the Incredible New Aretha Franklin Documentary AMAZING GRACE

I can only say RUN do not Walk to see this film.
It's obviously an art-house film and on for a week or so maximum.
So sleep and you will miss it....

Without doubt he BEST music documentary I've seen. NO talking heads or commentary, just an uncut view into 2 live Gospel performances by The Queen herself with James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir.

An amazing treat into this world. Not a dry eye in the house when the lights came up!!
An utter joys experience.

The Concert was extremely good, as usual. This was my 4th time seeing this current Tour material and I must give a special mention to the engineer at the desk (i didn't get her name!) who did a quite remarkable job with the sound. Quite exceptional, she controlled the sound in the room with great skill and extracted every drop of detail and atmosphere from the stage and venue. Top marks. Literally she was as important as the Trio, so really a Quartet! Cracking performance all round!

Bought many of his Lps. Etc etc.

Then my tastes kind of changed, into earlier jazz. (50s mainly.)

But I would still hear him from time to time. I enjoyed his stuff with Hilliard ensemble, for example.

Then a few years ago I saw he was playing in Edinburgh, which is where I used to live, and see him, all those years ago. I decided to revisit, bought a not inexpensive ticket, and made the long track to the frozen north ( it was July )

I was so disappointed and actually walked out long before the end. Not exactly sure why, but I couldn’t get in to it at all.

But Ive listened again (3 times ) to “Your Song” this morning, and reminded myself why I loved his playing.

It’s basically the tone he gets on soprano. So emotional. It’s kind of singing but crying at the same time. Loving it.

Brian, I'll come out from behind the sofa now.

Yes I understand the context he plays in and generally it is very interesting.
But my tastes were formed with giants such as 'Long tall' Dexter, Booker Ervin, Hank Mobley etc etc.

Garbarek, to me, most of the time, just puts me on edge.
I have records where it sounds as though he is violating a wild cat...:eek:
I am not sure of any other horn player on record that has this effect on me, well maybe Albert Ayler.

As I say, John Surman could play the most outlandish free solos and he just fits into my ear.
Maybe I'll try again with ol' Jan... as he seemed to be ECM's stable horn player, there is no shortage of material!

And don't get me started on Pat 'The Hair' Metheny's synth guitar ... why did no one say "Pat, NO!!!!"

good album. ive got this too on vinyl. been on order for a while.

its a 3 sided one and you get a wav or mp3 download too, so best of both worlds. just convert to flac and update the metadata.
